Touching the lives of 1 in 8, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women. This year, during National Breast Cancer Awareness month, breast surgical oncologist

Arthy Yoga, M.D., wants women to be more than just aware; she wants them to be empowered.

“By understanding her individual risk, a woman and her doctor can make decisions to lower her risk of developing breast cancer,” explains Dr. Yoga.

Many risk factors for breast cancer cannot be changed, such as gender, age, ethnicity, density of breast tissue, personal history, family history and genetic muta-tions. The good news is that there are other factors and lifestyle choices that can be controlled:

` Maintain a healthy weight ` Be physically active ` Limit alcohol use ` Use birth control options that don’t use hormones ` Avoid using hormone therapy to deal with the symptoms of menopause

Dr. Yoga adds, “When it comes to breast cancer prevention, I advise women to follow these lifestyle guidelines, and have your annual screening mammogram and clinical breast exam. And if you are concerned about any changes in your breasts, don’t delay—get checked by a healthcare professional.”

Dr. Yoga also recommends that women who have undergone a breast biopsy should be regularly followed by a breast health specialist such as a surgeon or nurse practitio-ner trained in breast care.

“Even if the result was benign and showed no cancer, the need for a biopsy indicates that something is changing in the breast and it should be monitored,” Dr. Yoga says. “I also encourage women to talk to family members about their family history of breast cancer in both men and women. Genetic screening and counseling can also give insight into your risk.”

For women who have a higher than average risk, additional screenings such as breast MRI or breast ultrasound may be necessary. There are also medica-tions that can help lower the risk, and for certain women meeting the established criteria, preventive surgery may be an option.

“Some women who are very high risk choose pre-ventive surgery,” says Yoga. “When done before cancer is present, the surgeon has the most options available for performing a nipple-sparing procedure.”

Breast cancer awareness is more than a pink ribbon; it is a reminder that women should be proactive with their breast health. Knowledge is power. Talk with your doctor about your individual risk of breast cancer and schedule your annual mammogram—and remind friends and family to do the same.

New devices improve quality of life

Delray Beach resident Barbara Clark remem-bers when doctors told her she only had three

years to live due to a weakened heart condition. She had a weak mitral valve, which caused her heart to work inefficiently, leaving her feeling tired and lethargic all the time.

Doctors this past summer determined that Clark was not a candidate for surgery but that she would be an ideal patient for a new non-surgical procedure with a device known as the MitraClip. Using a catheter through the groin, interventional cardiologist George Daniel, M.D., inserted the MitraClip and implanted it into Clark’s mitral valve. This clip works to keep the blood flowing properly through the mitral valve, ensuring that oxygenated blood can be pumped successfully through the body.

Now, at age 90, Clark says she feels like she has a “new lease on life.” The former New York hair model enjoys dining out with her husband, Ted, spending time with her new great grandson and going to get her hair done. “Five years ago, they didn’t have this medical technology, and now look at me with a new heart that works as good as ever,” said Clark. “I’m really glad I could make it to see this wonderful advancement in my lifetime.”

New Implantable Device for Arrythmia PatientsBethesda Heart Hospital now offers a new procedure for patients with arrythmia. Under the direction of cardiac electrophysiologist Yoel Vivas, M.D., patients who suffer from irregular heart beat may be candidates for implantation of the INTICA–CRT device, for cardiac resynchronization therapy.

A PACER THE SIZE OF A PILLPacemakers are getting smaller and smaller. Now,

Luis F. Mora, M.D., cardiac electrophysiologist, has

successfully implanted the first non-surgical,

leadless pacemaker at Bethesda. Measuring 25.9

mm (or just over 1 inch, the size of a large vitamin

pill) and 6.7 mm in diameter, the MICRA pacemaker

from Medtronic is inserted via a cathether in the

patient’s groin and can be placed in the heart

without any surgical incisions. The procedure takes

less than an hour, and patients go home either the

same day or after one night of observation. Because

there are no surgical incisions, patients do not have

any scars on their chests, experience minimal

complications (including less risk of serious

infections than with conventional pacemakers) and

can return to their active lifestyles after one week.

There are no age limits for the procedure, making it

a very attractive new option for anyone requiring a

single-chamber pacemaker.

Using a non-surgical procedure, interventional cardiologist George Daniel, M.D., implanted a new device that improved the blood flow through Barbara Clark’s heart valve. Now she and her husband, Ted, feel she has a “new lease on life.”

CRT is used to treat the symptoms and complica-tions associated with certain types of heart failure. It helps the pumping chambers to beat in a coordinated manner so that the heart works properly. By improv-ing blood flow, CRT may reduce heart failure symptoms, improving patients’ quality of life and reducing mortality.

This new INTICA device only has two leads, result-ing in the procedure being performed in less time with less risk of infection. As a result, the patient can go home by the following day.

Dr. Mueller earned his medical

Bethesda Hospital Foundation

This is a historic time for the Bethesda

Hospital Foundation. The culmination of

this new partnership between Bethesda

Health and Baptist Health South Florida

is an unprecedented milestone for not-for-

profit healthcare in Palm Beach County.

A testament to the work done so far, it

brings new and exciting opportunities to

build on the hallmarks that have made

Bethesda the hospital that this commu-

nity has trusted since 1959.

Seventy years ago, a group of commu-

nity leaders had a vision to form the

Gulfstream Hospital Association. From

those humble beginnings, their foresight

and perseverance led the way to what is

now Bethesda Health and the Bethesda

Hospital Foundation. A partnership built

on philanthropy with a mission to serve

our community, the Foundation has been

an integral part of all of Bethesda’s

accomplishments. Today, Bethesda

serves communities from Wellington to

Boca Raton through Bethesda Hospital

East, Bethesda Hospital West, Bethesda

Heart Hospital, Cornell Institute for Reha-

bilitation Medicine, as well as other

outpatient services. Bethesda is also a

teaching hospital, training medical stu-

dents and resident physicians as well as

nursing and radiography students.

We will continue to work hard for you

and for our Bethesda Hospitals. We look

forward to seeing you at this season’s

events, including the 18th Annual

Women of Grace Luncheon next month

supporting the vital services of the

Bethesda Center for Women and Chil-
