GOVERNMENT TO INTRODUCE MOTION CALLING FOR SENATE TO BE ABOLISHED
gov.ca - Yesterday in the Legislature, Premier Brad Wall introduced a government motion calling for the Senate of Canada to be abolished. Wall said he believes most Sas-katchewan people think that the Senate no longer serves any useful purpose and is not worth the near-ly 100 million taxpayers’ dollars it costs each year. “Long before the current scandals which have further marginalized the Senate as a useful institution, many
were questioning the relevance of an appointed group of men and wom-en, unelected and unaccountable, potentially standing in the way of an elected House of Commons,” Wall said. “As it has become clear that reform is not possible, abolition has become the preference of Saskatche-wan people.” The government motion simply reads: “That this Assembly supports the abolition of the Senate of Cana-da.” Wall said the motion is not a con-stitutional amendment, but simply a statement of Saskatchewan’s official position on the Senate.

“The Supreme Court will be ruling on what exactly is required constitutionally to abolish the Senate,” Wall said. “We want to wait until that ruling before considering whether to go ahead with introducing a constitutional amend-ment that would, of course, need the support of other provinces and the federal government.” Wall said while he had long been a proponent of Senate reform, he no longer believes meaningful reform is possible and instead, the Senate should be abolished. “That is also the official position of the Saskatchewan Party, it is the official position of the NDP and as a result, I would expect today’s motion to pass with support from both sides of the House,” Wall said.

This Day in History : Nov 7, 1885: Transcontinental railway completed
Previous DayNovember 7CalendarNext DayAt a remote spot called Craigellachie in the mountains of British Columbia, the last spike is driven into Canada’s first transcontinental railway.
In 1880, the Canadian government contract-ed the Canadian Pacific Railroad to construct the first all-Canadian line to the West Coast. During the next five years, the company laid 4,600 kilometers of single track, uniting var-ious smaller lines across Canada. Despite the logistical difficulties posed by areas such as the muskeg (bogs) region of northwestern Ontario and the high rugged mountains of British Columbia, the railway was completed six years ahead of schedule.
The transcontinental railway was instrumen-tal in populating the vast western lands of Canada, providing supplies and commerce to new settlers. Many of western Canada’s great cities and towns grew up around Canadian Pacific Railway stations.

It was Grandpa Jones 100th birthday and he was still in perfect health. At his birthday party he was asked how he managed to live so long and
stay so fit.He explained “I put my long life down to spending so much time out of doors. Ive been in the open air, day after day, rain or shine,
for the last 75 years.””How do you manage to keep up such a rigorous fitness regime?” we asked.”Its simple” he said. “When I married my wife
75 years ago, we both made solemn pledge on our wedding night. We agreed that whenever we ever had a fight, whoever was proved wrong
would go outside and take long walk.”

ONE DEAD, THREE INJURED IN COLLISION NEAR SWIFT CURRENT
ctv.ca - One person is dead and three others injured after a collision be-tween two pickup trucks on a gravel road near Swift Current. RCMP say a pickup lost control and slid into the path of an oncom-ing truck on Lac Pelletier Trail, about 10 kilometres southwest of the city, Tuesday morning. A 19-year-old man from Ponteix died at the scene. His name hasn’t been released. Two other people in the pickup and the male driver of the other truck were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Mounties say visibility was re-duced at the time of the collision due to fog.Alcohol is not believed to be a factor and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
