• Nightly - full service – from $26 to $35• Nightly - non-electric – remains un-changed at $17• Seasonal - electric – from $1,500 to $1,900• Seasonal – non electric – from $760 to $950• Swimming lessons – from $25 to $35 Costs to operate the provincial parks have increased 42 per cent since 2007 and this represents the first fee adjustment since the 2009 camping season. Park user fees cover less than 60 per cent of operating costs. Sas-katchewan’s nightly camping fee re-mains lower than Alberta and British Columbia and equal to Manitoba. The 2014 summer camping season will mark the third year that nightly campers will be able to book sites on-line, using SaskParks’ Reserve-A-Site system or through the reservation call centre. The system has been very suc-cessful, with more than 60,000 book-ings in each of the last two camping seasons. The online system will open March 3, 2014, with specific park reservation opening dates staggered

throughout the week. Check out www.saskparks.net for details. Applications for seasonal camping are now available online at www.sask-parks.net. Seasonal camping offers the opportunity to secure a campsite from May to September. This very popular program is avail-able at 21 provincial parks. Sites are allocated by a lottery system. The deadline for applications for a season-al site is Thursday, January 30, 2014. Seasonal sites will be awarded on Monday, February 3, 2014. Government has invested $44 mil-lion over the last five years to improve Saskatchewan’s provincial parks, in-cluding more than $7 million on elec-trification of nearly 1,400 campsites since 2007. The government is ded-icated to improving Saskatchewan’s provincial parks by investing an ad-ditional $10 million over four years, over and above the previously-en-hanced provincial parks capital bud-get to develop two new campgrounds, enhance shower and bathroom facili-ties, create more electrified sites and other infrastructure improvements.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - Jan 8, 1877: Crazy Horse fights last battle

On this day in 1877, Crazy Horse and his warriors--outnumbered, low on ammunition and forced to use outdated weapons to defend themselves--fight their final losing battle against the U.S. Cavalry in Montana.

Six months earlier, in the Battle of Little Bighorn, Crazy Horse and his ally, Chief Sitting Bull, led their combined forces of Sioux and Cheyenne to a stunning victory over Lieutenant Colonel George Custer (1839-76) and his men. The Indians were resisting the U.S. government’s efforts to force them back to their reservations. After Custer and over 200 of his soldiers were killed in the conflict, later dubbed “Custer’s Last Stand,” the American public wanted revenge. As a result, the U.S. Army launched a winter campaign in 1876-77, led by General Nelson Miles (1839-1925), against the remaining hostile Indians on the Northern Plains.

Combining military force with diplomatic overtures, Nelson con-vinced many Indians to surrender and return to their reservations. Much to Nelson’s frustration, though, Sitting Bull refused to give in and fled across the border to Canada, where he and his people re-mained for four years before finally returning to the U.S. to surren-der in 1881. Sitting Bull died in 1890. Meanwhile, Crazy Horse and his band also refused to surrender, even though they were suffering from illness and starvation.

On January 8, 1877, General Miles found Crazy Horse’s camp along Montana’s Tongue River. U.S. soldiers opened fire with their big wagon-mounted guns, driving the Indians from their warm tents out into a raging blizzard. Crazy Horse and his warriors managed to regroup on a ridge and return fire, but most of their ammunition was gone, and they were reduced to fighting with bows and arrows. They managed to hold off the soldiers long enough for the women and children to escape under cover of the blinding blizzard before they turned to follow them.

Though he had escaped decisive defeat, Crazy Horse realized that Miles and his well-equipped cavalry troops would eventually hunt down and destroy his cold, hungry followers. On May 6, 1877, Crazy Horse led approximately 1,100 Indians to the Red Cloud reservation near Ne-braska’s Fort Robinson and surrendered. Five months later, a guard fatally stabbed him after he allegedly resisted imprisonment by Indian policemen.

In 1948, American sculptor Korczak Ziolkow-ski began work on the Crazy Horse Memorial, a massive monument carved into a mountain in South Dakota. Still a work in progress, the monument will stand 641 feet high and 563 feet long when completed.

A Spanish teacher was explaining to her class that in Spanish, unlike English, nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine.“House” for instance, is feminine: “la casa.”“Pencil,” however, is masculine: “el lapiz.”A student asked, “What gender is ‘computer’?”Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups, male and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether “computer” should be a masculine or a feminine noun. Each group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation. The men’s group decided that “computer” should definitely be of the feminine gender (“la computadora”) because:1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic.2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is in-comprehensible to everyone else.3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible later retrieval; and4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your paycheck on accessories for it.

(THIS GETS BETTER!)The women’s group, however, concluded that computers should be masculine (“el computador”) because:1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on.2. They have a lot of data but still can’t think for themselves.3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time, they ARE the problem; and4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited a little longer, you could have gotten a better model. The women won.

WIND CHILL EXPLAINEDcbc.ca - When it’s cold out, we lose body heat. This heat is absorbed by the air that surrounds us. On calm days, the heat lost from our bodies forms a thin layer of warm air along the surface of our bodies. This warm layer of air acts as an insu-lator against the colder air around us. As the wind starts to blow, our lay-er of warm insulating air gets swept away and our skin is exposed directly to the cold air. Any new heat we give off is carried away with the wind. The more wind there is, the quick-er we lose heat.Wind does not change the tempera-ture of the air. If a thermometer is placed outside, it will read the same temperature regardless of whether it’s a windy day or a calm day. It simply “feels” colder because the heat that we give off is immediately blown away.

A dentist, after completing work on a patient, came to him and asked; “could you

help me? Could you give out a few of your loudest, most

painful screams?”The surprised patient said; “why doctor, it wasn’t all

that bad this time!”The dentist said; “there are so many people in the wait-ing room right now, and I don’t want to miss the four

o’clock train.”
