DADDY’S TEN RULES OF DATING For GuysRULE ONE: If you pull into my driveway and honk you’d better be delivering a package, because you’re sure not picking anything up. RULE TWO: You do not touch my daughter in front of me. You may glance at her, so long as you do not peer at anything below her neck. If you cannot keep your eyes or hands off of my daughter’s body, I will remove them.

RULE THREE: I am aware that it is considered fashionable for boys of your age to wear their trousers so loosely that they appear to be falling off their hips. Please don’t take this as an insult, but you and all of your friends are complete idiots. Still, I want to be fair and open minded about this issue, so I propose this compromise: You may come to the door with your underwear showing and your pants ten sizes to big, and I will not object. However, in order to ensure that your clothes do not, in fact come off during the course of your date with my daughter, I will take my electric nail gun and fasten your trousers securely in place to your waist.

RULE FOUR: I’m sure you’ve been told that in today’s world, sex without utilising a “Barrier method” of some kind can kill you. Let me elaborate, when it comes to sex, I am the barrier, and I will kill you.

RULE FIVE: It is usually understood that in order for us to get to know each other, we should talk about sports, politics, and other issues of the day. Please do not do this. The only information I require from you is an indication of when you expect to have my daughter safely back at my house, and the only word I need from you on this subject is: “early”

RULE SIX: I have no doubt you are a popular fellow, with many opportunities to date other girls. This is fine with me as long as it is okay with my daughter. Otherwise, once you have gone out with my little girl, you will continue to date no one but her until she is finished with you. If you make her cry, I will make you cry.

RULE SEVEN: As you stand in my front hallway, waiting for my daughter to appear, and more than an hour goes by, do not sigh and fidget. If you want to be on time for the movie, you should not be dating. My daughter is putting on her makeup, a process than can take longer than painting the Golden Gate Bridge. Instead of just standing there, why don’t you do something useful, like changing the oil in my car?

RULE EIGHT: The following places are not appropriate for a date with my daughter: Places where there are beds, sofas, or anything softer than a wooden stool. Places where there is darkness. Places where there is dancing, holding hands, or happiness. Places where the ambient temperature is warm enough to introduce my daughter to wear shorts, tank tops, midriff T-shirts, or anything other than overalls, a sweater, and a goose down parka -- zipped up to her throat. Movies with a strong romantic or sexual theme are to be avoided; movies which features chain saws are okay. Hockey games are okay. Old folks homes are better.

RULE NINE: Do not lie to me. I may appear to be a pot-bellied, balding, middle-aged, dim-witted has-been. But on issues relating to my daughter, I am the all-knowing, merciless God of your universe. If I ask you where you are going and with whom, you have one chance to tell me the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. I have a shotgun, a shovel, and five acres behind the house. Do not trifle with me.

RULE TEN: Be afraid. Be very afraid. It takes very little for me to mistake the sound of your car in the driveway for a chopper coming in over a rice paddy near Hanoi. When my Agent Orange starts acting up, the voices in my head frequently tell me to clean the guns as I wait for you to bring my daughter home. As soon as you pull into the driveways you should exit the car with both hands in plain sight. Speak the perimeter password, announce in a clear voice that you have brought my daughter home safely and early, then return to your car -- there is no need for you to come inside. The camouflaged face at the window is mine.

For Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014ARIES(March 21 to April 19)You know that sometimes you have a

short fuse. (Moi?) Today, this will betested. The Moon is in your sign, oppos-ing your ruler, Mars. Bite your tongue ifyou feel annoyed by someone.

TAURUS(April 20 to May 20)An undercurrent of resentment or

anger might run through your day. Justlet this go. Holding on to anger is likedrinking poison and expecting the otherperson to die.

GEMINI(May 21 to June 20)Be patient with children today.

Similarly, be patient with friends andromantic partners. These are areas whereyou are likely to lose it in a New Yorkminute.

CANCER(June 21 to July 22)Be diplomatic when talking to bosses,

parents, teachers and VIPs, because youare high-viz today whether you like it ornot. An angry comment that slips outwill be noticed by others, especially peo-ple in power.

... Your Daily Fix ...

Karen Carpenter, a singer who long suffered under the burden of the expectations that came with pop star-dom, died on this day in 1983, succumbing to heart fail-ure brought on by her long, unpublicized struggle with anorexia.Carpenter had a fixation with her weight from her ear-liest days performing with her brother, Richard, in and around their hometown of Downey, California. As a teenager, she dropped at least 25 pounds on a popular and severe weight-loss program known as “the Water Diet,” so that by the time she and Richard burst on the pop scene with their smash hit “Close To You” in the summer of 1970, she was a thin but healthy 20-year-old carrying 120 lbs. on a 5’ 5” frame. She maintained that weight through the early years of the Carpenters’ suc-cess, yet it appears that Karen’s insecurities about her ap-pearance only grew, even as she was becoming one of the biggest pop stars of her era. In pictures printed in Rolling Stone magazine in late 1974, when the Carpenters were one of the most success-ful acts in all of pop music, Karen looks fit and healthy. Yet by mid-1975, the Carpenters were forced to cancel tours of Japan and Europe after Karen collapsed on stage in Las Vegas. Her weight had plummeted to only 90 lbs., and though it would rebound somewhat after a brief hospitalization, the next seven years were a repeating cycle of dramatic weight loss, collapse and then hospi-talization. The name of Karen’s condition was virtually unknown to the public at this time, but all that was about to change. Ear-ly on the morning of February 4, 1983, while staying in her parents home in Downey, Karen suffered a deadly heart attack, brought on by the physiological stresses placed on her system by the disease whose name soon entered the public consciousness: anorexia nervo-sa. She was only 32 years old.

HOME MADE TOP TARTS!

“I didn’t think anything could be better than a toasted store bought pastry tart in the morning--until I made these. Very, very easy to make! Kids (and adults) love them!”

Original recipe makes 8 tarts 1 (15 ounce) package refrigerated pie crusts 1/4 cup strawberry jam, divided 2 cups confectioners’ sugar 2 tablespoons milk 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 tablespoon colored decorating sugar, or as needed Directions:

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper. Unroll the pie crusts, place on a lightly floured work sur-face, and roll the crusts slightly with a rolling pin to square the edges. Cut each crust into 8 equal-sized rectangles. Place about 2 teaspoons of strawberry jam in the center of 8 squares, and spread the jam out to within 1/4 inch of the edge of the pastry square. Top each with another pastry square, and use a fork to crimp the squares together, sealing in the jam. Use a knife to trim the pastries, if desired. Move the filled pastries to the prepared baking sheets. Bake in the preheated oven until the edges are lightly golden brown, about 7 minutes. Allow to cool on the baking sheets. Meanwhile, stir together the confectioners’ sugar, milk, and vanilla extract in a bowl to make a spreadable frosting. Spread the cooled tarts with frosting and sprinkle with colored sugar.

A second grader came home from school and said to her mother, “Mom, guess what!

We learned how to make babies today”

The mother, more than a little surprised, tried to keep her cool.

“That’s interesting,” she said. “How do you make babies?”

It’s simple, replied the girl. “You just change y to i and add es.”

20TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

A woman wakes up at night to find her husband not in bed.

She finds him sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee, tears in his eyes.

‘’What’s the matter, dear?’’ she whispers. The husband looks up.

‘’Do you remember 20 years ago when we were dating, and you were only 16?’’ he asks.

The wife is touched to tears thinking that her husband is so caring and sensitive. ‘’Yes, I do,’’

she replies. The husband pauses. The words are not

coming easily: ‘’Do you remember when your father caught us in the back seat of my car

making love?’’‘’Yes, I remember,’’ says the wife.

The husband continues: ‘’Do you remember when he shoved a shotgun in my face and said, ‘Either you marry my daughter, or I will send

you to jail for 20 years?’ ‘’‘’I remember that too,’’ she replies softly.

He wipes another tear from his cheek and says: ‘’I would have gotten out today.’’
