PRINCE GEORGE CHRISTENED IN SMALL, INTIMATE CEREMONYctv.ca -Marking his admission into the Church of England, Prince George has been christened in a small, intimate cer-emony that experts say broke from royal tradition. The prince emerged from the Chap-el Royal at St. James’s Palace Wednes-day after the ceremony with his parents, Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. The prince wore a replica christen-ing gown during the ceremony that was fashioned after the one made for Queen Victoria and first used in 1841. The orig-inal gown, which was worn by other members of the royal family, was retired
in 2004. The christening will be followed with a tea at Clarence House, the official res-idence of Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla. Queen Elizabeth II, her husband Prince Philip, Prince Charles, his wife Camilla and Prince Harry were among the royals who attended the ceremony. Also in attendance were Kate’s father, mother, brother and sister. Katie Nicholl, author of the book “Kate: The Future Queen,” told CTV’s Canada AM that the ceremony broke from tra-dition in the fact that it was “small” and “low-key.”Unlike past royal christenings, which were held in Buckingham Palace,

Wednesday’s ceremony took place at the Chapel Royal at St. James’s Palace. The chapel is the same location where Kate was confirmed into the Church of England in 2011, prior to her marriage to Prince William. It is also the same loca-tion where Prince William paid his final respects to his mother, Princess Diana, while she was lying in state in 1997, Nich-oll said. Palace officials said water from the Riv-er Jordan was used during the ceremony that lasted roughly 45 minutes. Nicholl said that the audience for the christening was decidedly small, with only 23 people -- mostly immediate fami-ly members -- on the guest list. “This is going to be a very small, very intimate and ultimately a family christen-ing,” Nicholl said. According to royal tradition, six god-parents are typically chosen, she said. But ahead of Prince George’s christening Prince William and Kate named seven:• Oliver Baker, a friend from St. Andrews University• Emilia Jardine-Paterson, a friend of Kate’s who is said to have introduced the couple when they were 17• Earl Grosvenor, son of the Duke of Westminster• Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, a past private secretary for the couple• Julia Samuel, a close friend of the late Princess Diana
• William van Cutsem, a friend of Prince William• Zara Philips, cousin to Prince William Nicholl noted there were not many “traditional names” on the list of godpar-ents, noting that the couple chose only one family member and selected friends to round out the list instead. Prince George was born on July 22. He is third in line to the British throne, after Prince Charles and Prince William. The ceremony, which was performed by Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canter-bury, will be marked with a photo of the Queen and the three heirs to the throne. The photo is set to be released on Thurs-day.

SNACK-O-LANTERNSWhat you’ll need
Navel orangeCanned or fresh fruit salad
How to make it
To make one lantern, use a small knife to slice the top off a navel orange and cut around its interi-or to hollow it out. Scoop out the orange segments, chop them, and mix them with canned or fresh fruit salad. Carve small facial features in one side of the orange, then cut a slit in the lid to accommodate the handle of a green plastic spoon. Fill the lantern with fruit salad. Insert the spoon and set the lid in place.

On this day in 1901, a 63-year-old schoolteacher named Annie Edson Taylor becomes the first person to take the plunge over Ni-agara Falls in a barrel. After her husband died in the Civil War, the New York-born Taylor moved all over the U. S. before settling in Bay City, Michi-gan, around 1898. In July 1901, while reading an article about the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, she learned of the growing popularity of two enormous waterfalls located on the border of up-state New York and Canada. Strapped for cash and seeking fame, Taylor came up with the perfect attention-getting stunt: She would go over Niagara Falls in a barrel. Taylor was not the first person to attempt the plunge over the famous falls. In October 1829, Sam Patch, known as the Yankee Leaper, survived jumping down the 175-foot Horseshoe Falls of the Niagara River, on the Canadian side of the border. More than 70 years later, Taylor chose to take the ride on her birthday, October 24. (She claimed she was in her 40s, but genealogical records later showed she was 63.) With the help of two assistants, Taylor strapped herself into a leather harness inside an old wooden pickle barrel five feet high and three feet in diameter. With cushions lining the barrel to break her fall, Taylor was towed by a small boat into the middle of the fast-flowing Niagara River and cut loose. Knocked violently from side to side by the rapids and then pro-pelled over the edge of Horseshoe Falls, Taylor reached the shore alive, if a bit battered, around 20 minutes after her journey began. After a brief flurry of photo-ops and speaking engagements, Tay-lor’s fame cooled, and she was unable to make the fortune for which she had hoped. She did, however, inspire a number of copy-cat daredevils. Between 1901 and 1995, 15 people went over the falls; 10 of them survived. Among those who died were Jesse Sharp, who took the plunge in a kayak in 1990, and Robert Overcracker, who used a jet ski in 1995. No matter the method, going over Niagara Falls is illegal, and survivors face charges and stiff fines on either side of the border.
Two drunks are walking along. One drunk says to the other, “What a beautiful night, look at the moon.”
The other drunk stops and looks at his drunken friend, “You are wrong. That’s not the moon, that’s
the sun.”Both started arguing for a while when they came
upon another drunk walking, so they stopped him. “Sir, could you please help settle our argument? Tell us what that thing is up in the sky that’s shining. Is it
the moon or the sun?”The third drunk looked at the sky and then looked at
them and said, “Sorry, I don’t live around here.”

CREWS FIND ANCIENT ABORIGINAL BONES ALONG PIPELINE ROUTEcbc.ca - The discovery of ancient aboriginal remains has led to a tempo-rary shut down in the construction of a gas pipeline near Moose Jaw. TransGas, a SaskEnergy company, is building a new natural gas con-nection for the K+S potash mine in the area. A contracted trackhoe operator who was digging a trench spotted the bones one week ago. Archaeologists have since examined the bones and determined they are human remains which predate European contact. RCMP said analysis indicated the bones date back more than 1000 years. The discovery has SaskEnergy putting the work on hold while the situation is assessed. “When we have previously found things like the buffalo ribs and teepee circles, we leave them undisturbed and we re-route our pipeline around them,” SaskEnergy’s Casey MacLeod said Tuesday. “It’s too ear-ly to say what exactly our approach is going to be, but work will remain halted until everything is completed.” The provincial Crown corporation’s aboriginal relations department has asked First Nations elders to visit the site and supervise the dig-ging. The bones were found near a location known as the Nicole Flats, which is east of the mine site. “We have reached out to First Nations elders in the area, as is proto-col, and we’re just working now to get them involved,” MacLeod said. According to officials from the contractor, the heavy equipment op-erator first thought he had come upon the bones of a large animal, but closer inspection led him to suspect they may be human remains.

A teacher sees a lad entering the class-room – his hands were dirty.
She stopped him and said, “John, please wash your hands. My goodness, what would you say if I came into the room
with hands like that?”
Smiling the boy replied, “I think I’d be too polite to mention it.”
