Students of the Future: the Anonobots (Room P0808A)Meet members of the "Anonobots"! They’re part of a Bloomington robotics team of 5th-9th graders in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Lego League (FLL).  In this breakout, they and their coaches will show off their robot! They will also tell you about the FIRST opportunities available to K-12 students and share their experiences in the league.

Moving toward Equity (Room A2564) Many of us have been involved with diversity training that focuses on cultural difference and respecting all perspectives.  While this is a good start, we cannot move toward true equity in our workplaces, organizations, and personal relationships until we address historical and institutional inequality.  In order to address the myriad ways that certain people are marginalized based on social identities such as race, gender, disability, religion, class, sexual orientation, etc. every one of us needs to understand our own identities, how we all demonstrate bias that is often unconscious, and how we are all capable of moving toward equity.

Presented by Dr. Anne Phibbs, President of Strategic Diversity Initiatives

Breakout sessions, continued:

Your Role in Internationalizing Normandale (Room A2562)How are we, through our work both in and outside the classroom, preparing our students to thrive in international communities both at home and abroad? Join your colleagues and the award-winning internationalization team from the University of Minnesota as we embark on a journey to initiate, coordinate and synthesize ongoing internationalization efforts across campus.

Presented by Gayle Woodruff and Kate Martin, Global Programs & Strategy (GPS) Alliance at the University of Minnesota

What the Heck is Office 365? (Room A2556)Discover what Office 365 is, how to access it, and why you may want to use it. Office 365 allows you to store files, collaborate on documents, and much more. Bring your questions! There will be time for Q&A.

Presented by Theresa Reyes, Director, User Services, Information Technology; Adam Gillard, Education Technology Generalist; Dylan Hummel, Education Technology Generalist

Charge! Let’s Fight the Good Fight! (Room P2844)What do water bottles, dances, and windows have in common? Conflict, of course! Get a charge out of discovering how these connections to conflict can actually make your conflict experience positive.              Presented by Jim Frankenfeld, Communication Instructor

Love Language (Room P2840)Do you speak flowers, encouragement or dinner preparation? Depending on the receiver, each one of these may tell someone how much you care – or don’t. Learn the impact your own type of love “currency” and the currencies of others have on the quality of your relationships. Chocolate may be provided.

Presented by Jennifer Isaac, Communication Instructor

Smartphones in the Classroom (Room A2552)As a teacher, it's very frustrating to look out at your class, only to see everyone absorbed in their smartphone.  But what do you do about it?  This session will look at various ways of managing student cell phone use the classroom, from policies limiting their use to creative ways of incorporating them into lessons.  Come hear what other faculty are doing, and share your own ideas with your colleagues!

Facilitated by Jen Miller, English Instructor and CTL Campus Leader

Recharge Your Rhythm (Room A1560)…and learn basic steps of swing and salsa from our own Torrion Amie.  This easy and fun lesson will have you dancing in the halls (ok, maybe not), but it will be a great way to relieve some stress.  If you’ve always wanted to learn, this is a great non-threatening way to do so.   (And there’s no special equipment needed.)

Taught by Torrion Amie, Dean of Outreach and Enrollment

1:30 – 2:30 Breakout Sessions EncoreDid you have a hard time picking between breakouts at 12:15? Was there one that you were really sorry to have missed? Don’t despair. We’re doing each breakout session twice, so go now to that other one! (Please see the 12:15 breakouts for details and locations.)

Remembering Ben (Room A2554)Ben Maegi’s death has touched many of us on campus in many different ways. If you are looking for a space to grieve, reflect, or connect with others who miss Ben, stop in A2554 during this second breakout period. A book will be available in which you can write memories or messages, which will then be given to Ben’s family.
