In the late 70's Erdman's in Kasson started a program forchurches and other non-profit organizations that has resulted inthe business disbursing $586,000 to date back to the DodgeCounty area.
Church organizations and non-profits receive one half of 1%of the Erdman's cash register receipts submitted. A matchingamount of one half of 1% is placed in the Erdman's CountyMarket Charitable Board fund. Local people with a need cansubmit applications to the eight member board administeringthe fund. The board is made up of representatives from severalof the participating non-profit groups and criteria is set to qual-ify for funds for those applying and qualifying for funds.
With the Erdman's cash register receipt program non-profitorganizations benefit as well as individuals and families. MikeLangan, Erdman's County Market general manager, said moneypaid out in the last 34-plus years has been made possible by somany loyal shoppers at the store.
There are over two dozen churches and non-profits involvedin the Erdman's cash register receipt program. Distributions aremade twice a year. For the last distribution non-profits received$2,862. An additional $2,862 went into the charitable fund to bedistributed by the board.
Churches from Dodge Center, West Concord, Kasson,Mantorville, Byron and Hayfield continue to participate. Forexample, at the last disbursement, the South Zumbro LutheranChurch received $164.88 and the Holy Family Catholic Church$340.97. "The funds can add up over the course of a year," saidLangan.
A few of the non-profits that have benefitted from the chari-table board funds include K-M Care & Share, Faith In Action,SEMCAC Food Shelf and K-M Lions Club.
The Erdman's County Market general manager said the pro-gram is still growing and is an opportunity for churches andnon-profits to pick up additional funds for their special projects.Anyone interested or with questions should inquire at the store.
This is another way of how shopping locally strengthensour community.

Brought to you by:
Looking for Love andCompanionship Online
Dear Savvy Senior,What can you tell me about online dating for older
people? My daughter has been urging me to give it atry, but at age 62, I’m a little hesitant.
Lonely SeniorDear Lonely,Dating sites have become enormously popular among
the older generation in recent years. In fact, boomers andseniors make up about 20 percent of online daters today, and the numbers keeps growing. Here’s what you shouldknow.
Meeting OnlineIf you’re interested in dating again or are just looking for
a friend to spend time with, dating websites are an easyway to meet hundreds of new single people without everhaving to leave home.
If you’re feeling hesitant, a good way to ease into it is tovisit a few dating sites and look around. Most servicesallow you to check out their members at no cost or obliga-tion. Then, if you like what you see, you can sign up (feestypically range between $15 and $60 per month, howeversome sites are free) and start emailing members you’reinterested in or they can email you. Here are some othertips to help you get started.
• Choose a site: With over 1,000 matchmaking sites onthe Internet today, choosing can be a bit overwhelming.Depending on your preferences here are some popularoptions to look into.
If you don’t want to spend any money, free sites likePlentyofFish.com and OKCupid.com are good places tostart, but beware that these sites have a lot of ads.
If you’re interested lot’s of choices, consider mainstreamsites like Match.com and eHarmony.com which have hugememberships in all demographics.
Or, if you are looking to find a specific type of person, there are hundreds of niche sites like OurTime.com andSeniorPeopleMeet.com for those 50 and older,Alikewise.com for book lovers, DateMyPet.com for animallovers, VeggieDate.org for vegetarians, JDate.com forJewish singles, BlackPeopleMeet.com for AfricanAmericans, and ChristianMingle.com whose slogan is “FindGod’s Match for You.” Or, check out AARP’s new datingwebsite partner HowAboutWe.com.
• Create a profile: When you join a dating site you’ll needto create a personality profile that reflects who you areincluding recent photos, hobbies, interests, favorite activi-ties and more. If you need some help, sites likeeFlirtExpert.com or VirtualDatingAssistants.com can writeone for you for a fee.
• Use caution: When you register with a dating site youremain anonymous. No one gets access to your full name, address, phone number or email until you decide to give itout. So be very prudent who you give your information to,and before meeting, chat on the phone a few times orvideo chat online, and when you do meet in person for thefirst time, meet in a public place or bring a friend along. Ifyou want to be extra cautious, you can do a quick back-ground check on your date for a few dollars at sites likevalimate.com and mymatchchecker.com.
• Don’t be naive: In an effort to get more responses, many people will exaggerate or flat out lie in their profiles,or post pictures that are 10 years old or 20 pounds lighter. So don’t believe everything you see or read.
• Make an effort: A lot of times, people – especiallywomen – sit back and let others come to them. Don’t beafraid to make the first move. When you find someone youlike, send a short note that says, “I really enjoyed your pro-file. I think we have some things in common.” Keep it sim-ple.
Don’t get discouraged: If you don’t get a response fromsomeone, don’t let it bother you. Just move on. There aremany others that will be interested in you and it only takesone person to make Internet dating worthwhile.
