Simplified Computer Software ThatCan Help Seniors Get Online
Dear Savvy Senior,Do you know of any computer software that’s
designed for seniors that I can download on an oldcomputer that I have? I would like to set my grand-mother up with a senior-friendly system for email andInternet access, but I don’t want to spend a lot ofmoney.
Searching GrandsonDear Searching,There are actually a number of companies and services
today that offer simplified computer software that’sdesigned specifically for seniors who have little or no com-puter experience.
These software packages can transform most MicrosoftWindows personal computers (PCs) – some work withMacs and tablets too – into a much simpler computerexperience that provides seniors easy access to most func-tions like sending and receiving email, browsing theInternet, making video calls, looking at photos, playinggames and more. Here are some top options to check out.
Free SoftwareSince it’s completely free, a good place to start is at
Eldy, an Italian nonprofit organization that provides simpli-fied computer software in 25 different languages includingEnglish. Available to download at www.eldy.eu, this soft-ware works on PCs that use Windows and Linux systems,Macs and Android tablets.
Once installed, Eldy converts the computer’s desktopinto a simple six-button menu that has large text, colorcontrasts and simplified instructions (no confusing icons)that makes it easy to see, understand and operate.
The six-button menu puts seniors literally one-click-of-the-mouse away from simplified versions of email, the Web,Skype for video calls, chat groups, a simple word process-ing program and more.
It’s also worth noting that Eldy software works ontouch-screen computers too, and they also offer onlinetech-support.
Fee-Based ServicesIf, however, you don’t mind spending a little money,
there are also a number of companies that offer softwaresimilar to Eldy, but provide a few extra enticing features. One of the best deals is offered through SeeYouLink (seey-oulink.com) which has a three-month free trial and chargesonly $4.95 per month after that.
SeeYouLink’s web-based software will transform anymouse-operated or touch-screen Windows-based PC, intoa simplified big-button operating system with large fontsand color contrasts. This will give your grandmother easyaccess to a host of functions that she can select from likeemail, Web browsing, video calling, brain-fitness games, movies, Facebook, a calendar that sends reminders andmuch more.
In addition, this service also provides a “remote access”feature that will give you and other family members theability to access your grandmother’s computer system fromliterally any computer anywhere in the world, so you canhelp her set things up, show her websites, scheduledappointments, or guide her through any other questions orproblems she might have. And, when you or your grand-mother needs help, SeeYouLink offers free tech-supportboth online and over the phone.
In addition to SeeYouLink, some other companies wortha look that offer similar services include InTouchLink(intouchlink.com), which can be used on a PC, Mac or iPadand costs $13.75 per month or $150 per year. Pointer Ware(pointerware.com), which works on Windows PCs andcosts a one-time fee of $149, or you can subscribe monthlyfor $8 per month. And BigScreenLive (bigscreenlive.com),that operates on Windows PCs and runs $9.95 per monthfor an annual membership.
Senior-Friendly ComputersIf you find that you would rather purchase your grand-
mother a new computer that’s designed for seniors and isready to go right out of the box, you have options here too.
Two of the most popular are the Telikin (telikin.com,800-230-3881) which costs between $699 and $999 – thissame computer is also sold as the “WOW” computerthrough firstSTREET. And MyGait (mygait.com, 866-469-4248), which runs $799 or $899 plus a $20 monthly servicefee.Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman,OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. Jim Miller is a contributor to the NBCToday show and author of “The Savvy Senior” book.
Fun By The NumbersLike puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bendingpuzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off,so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test!
Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken downinto nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each numbercan appear only once in each row, column and box. You canfigure out the order in which the numbers will appear by usingthe numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The morenumbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

STAYING SAFE ON AND OFF THE SCHOOL BUS
DODGE COUNTY INDEPENDENT SHOPPING NEWS DIRECTORY ADVERTISERS URGE STUDENTS AND STAFF TO HAVE AN EXCELLENT SCHOOL YEAR!
The start of the 2012-13school year means therewill be additional foot andvehicle traffic before andafter school hours. Be sureto drive cautiously andstay off cell phones.
School Resource OfficerJason Peck will be back onthe beat in the K-M SchoolDistrict for the 2012-13 year.Jason is on the KassonPolice Department and willbe interacting with studentsand staff in all three build-ings.
When parents of younger children send theirkids off to school each morning, it’s often notwithout worry. What mischief will they get intooutside of the watchful eyes of adults?
Parents are never prepared for school bus acci-dents. Each year an estimated 33 children acrossthe country are killed in school bus related acci-dents. Such accidents are almost always pre-ventable and require just a few moments ofinstruction with kids to help save their lives.
• Don’t walk directly in front of the bus: Whenmost children get off the bus, they cross the streetdirectly in front of the bus. This makes it difficultfor the bus driver to see if any children are still infront. In general, parents should instruct theirchildren to take five long paces in front of thebus. This will leave enough room for the bus dri-ver to see, especially if kids drop anything whilecrossing the street.
• Look both ways before getting off the bus:Before stepping off the bus, kids should alwayslook both ways. While buses should always be inthe right hand lane, bikes or even cars in a hurrycould attempt to get around the bus in the shoul-der. Most kids hit in bus accidents are getting onor off the bus or waiting at the bus stop. Manymotorists disobey the laws pertaining to stoppingwhen a bus stops, so kids should be extra carefuland always keep their eyes peeled for movingtraffic.
• Listen to crossing guards: Busy intersections
often have crossing guards to help keep childrensafe. Kids should be instructed to wait for cross-ing guards before venturing across the street. Atstops where no crossing guards are present, encourage children to act with extreme cautionwhen crossing the street.
Should any books or supplies be dropped inthe middle of the road, finish crossing the streetfirst. Once a child has made it across the street, check to see if it’s safe to go back and pick up thebook. If worse comes to worse, let kids know thebooks or supplies can always be replaced.
The K-M Middle School is now three years oldand there is increased activity between the highschool, elementary and middle schools. Be espe-cially cautious when traveling in these areas andrespect the flashing yellow lights near the schoolswhen students are waiting to use the crosswalk.
There will once again be a crossing guard atHighway 57 where the swimming pool crossingguard is located during summer pool hours. There are also pedestrian markers to indicatewhen someone is in the crosswalk motoristsshould stop and let them cross the highway. Oncestudents cross the intersection at Highway 57there are walking paths to the three school build-ings.
Please note that alternate routes will berequired on 16th Street due to the bridge replace-ment project. The road is expected to be openedup again around Thanksgiving.
