We want to say ‘thank you’ to everyone in thebluff area for supporting the brewery and helping tospread the word about our hand-crafted Stagecoachbeers,” said Tod Fyten, owner of the MantorvilleBrewing Company since 2002. The MantorvilleBrewing Company was established in 1996 andreleased its first brew in 1997. In 1999 Tod Fytenbought out three of the original six partners, and theremaining owners in 2002.

Visitors can sample the full line of brews includ-ing the Stagecoach Amber and Golden Ales, alongwith their famed Stagecoach Smoked Porter. Theywill also be serving Teddy’s Root Beer, named afterhis great, great, great-grandfather Theodore and hisson, Ted. “You get the full experience when youtour the brewery,” said Tod. “Visitors can see theprocess from the mash tank through fermentationand conditioning, all while enjoying the aromas ofthe hops and unique esters from the European yeaststrains we use. And then you get to taste some real-ly good beers, like our 15th Anniversary SmokedRye Whiskey Ale.”

The Mantorville hand-crafted beer takes its namefrom the stagecoaches that used to stop at thefamous Stagecoach Saloon at Mantorville’s HistoricHubbell House. Today, the public can still order iton tap at the Hubbell House as well as buy it in bot-tled six-packs at many local liquor stores.

A bit of history about the Mantorville BrewingCompany: The location is a stone¹s throw awayfrom the Hubbell House and very near to the DodgeCounty’s original brewery, aptly named the Dodge

County Brewery. The county breweryoperated from 1857 to 1939, closingat the onset of World War II, when itscopper kettle was scrapped for thewar effort.

In 1999, Pioneer Craft Brewer TodFyten, who created the BoundaryWaters line of beers, the world’s firstwild rice beer for the James PageBrewery in 1988, became a partner inthe brewery. In 2002, Fyten boughtout his partners to become the soleproprietor. As demand for the beergrew, Fyten began bottling theStagecoach line of beers in six-packsto great success.

Today, the Mantorville Brewery isrepresented by10 Budweiser distribu-tors throughout the state ofMinnesota. Capitol Beverage, a TwinCities wholesaler, recently became adistributor of Stagecoach forMinneapolis and St Paul, joiningSchott Distributing of Rochester, whohelped Fyten launch the brand beyondMantorville nearly a decade ago.“Seeing the brewery develop overthese past 15 years has been a realjoy,” said Fyten. “Getting to workwith my distributors from my earlydays of pioneering the craft beer busi-ness here in Minnesota has beensomething you cannot put a dollaramount on. The Craft beer businesshas not always been as hot as is itnow. Much of it was built on thebacks of those who have gone beforeus. Like Tom Schott of SchottDistributing, who passed last year orJim Page who sold out his brewery inthe mid 90’s to pursue other profes-sional interests. All and all, it hasbeen a great ride and am I am lookingforward to the next 15 years.”

Attention lead foots: accelerated speed patrols in JulyDodge County provides tips when encountering aggressive drivers

The Dodge County Safe Roads Coalition has heard everyexcuse from motorists for speeding, but now motorists shouldhear this: There will be enhanced speed enforcement patrolsin July as part of a statewide campaign coordinated by theMinnesota Department of Public Safety Office of TrafficSafety.

Unsafe and illegal speed is the most commonly reportedcontributing factor in fatal crashes. Motorists stopped at 20mph over the speed limit face double the fine, and those tick-eted traveling more than 100 mph can lose their license for sixmonths.

“As drivers, we can’t put our schedules ahead of othermotorists’ safety,” says Dodge County Deputy Scott Prins“ Running late or being in a hurry are not excuses to speedand put other drivers at risk.”

Consequences of SpeedingDodge County Safe Roads Coalition cites these dangers of

speeding:•Greater potential for loss of vehicle control.•Increased stopping distance.•Less time available for driver response for crash avoid-

ance.•Increased crash severity leading to more numerous and

severe injuries. The Dodge County Safe Roads Coalition reports that a

motorist traveling at 65 miles per hour compared to 55 mphwill save only 1 minute and 41 seconds on a 10 mile trip.

More than twice as many speed-related fatal crashes occuron rural roads than major urban roads.

Are You an Aggressive Driver?Aggressive driving traits such as tailgating, unsafe passing,

running lights and weaving in and out of traffic, are anothersafety concern of Dodge County during the campaign. DeputyPrins says motorists confronted by aggressive drivers should:Get out of their way, stay calm, do not challenge them andavoid eye contact. Motorists may also report aggressive dri-ving and should be prepared to provide vehicle description, license number and location.

Three Seconds Is the Safe Following DistanceDeputy Prins says motorists should keep a three-second

following distance to allow for safe stopping and reaction toother vehicles. It takes more than the length of a football fieldto stop when traveling at 60 miles per hour.

Look Twice for MotorcyclistsAnother safety concern in July is the record-high number

of motorcyclists on the road. Deputy Prins says a major fac-tor in rider deaths are unsafe speeds - more than half of allmotorcycle crashes are single-vehicle events in which therider loses control of the bike and runs off the road or crash-es. He stresses for motorists to look twice for riders, especial-ly at intersections, because motorcycles are smaller, theirspeeds and distance can be harder to gauge.

The speed enforcement and education effort is coordinatedby the Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety. The campaign is a component of the state’s Toward ZeroDeath program (TZD). A primary vision of the TZD programis to create a safe driving culture in Minnesota in whichmotorists support a goal of zero road fatalities by practicingand promoting safe and smart driving behavior. TZD focuseson the application of four strategic areas to reduce crashes -education, enforcement, engineering and emergency traumaresponse.
