When Kent and CaroleKeller took over ownershipof the former Mantorvilleschool in the summer of2011 Kent said they neverreally had a marketing planfor attracting tenants. Ayear-and-a-half later theyhave five businesses and achurch leasing space. "Ididn't have the time," saidKent referring to a market-ing plan. He placed twosigns along Highway #57adjacent to the school andplaced information onCraig's List. You could saysome of the marketing andpromotion was in the formof sweat equity. Kent andCarole did a great dealcleaning. Work had to bedone on the boiler and awall was added to separatethe kitchen from the church(located in the former lunch-room). Paint, carpet andvinyl helped to make thebuilding marketable. The45,000 square foot buildingwas built in three sections. The original building wasconstructed in 1921. A two-story addition was added in1978. In 1985 a single-story addition was added tothe south (it runs parallelwith the highway). "Icould not imagine the build-ing facing the wreckingball," said Kent. The tax-payers put a lot of moneyinto this building over theyears. I did not want to seeit go to waste." The firsttenants were Adam andYvonne VanOort who ownDataNab. They do all theirmarketing on the internetand sell electronics on-line.Adam said he could not findanything in the area that fit

Former Mantorville School gaining more tenants

Kent and Carole Keller saved the former Mantorvilleschool from the wrecking ball. The county consideredusing the space, but they would have knocked the build-ing down.

Adam VanOort and his business DataNab were the firsttenants of the former school. Adam and his wife Yvonnedo all their marketing on the internet, selling electronicson-line.

The Wooden NickelFudge Company has madegood use of the formerschool kitchen. The kitchenhas been ideal for makingfudge. They package andprepare to ship in two otherareas of the former school. Also pictured is a sample ofthe one-fourth pound piecesof fudge they shipped overthe holiday for HickoryFarms.

Students from Train A Child Center (TACC) practicetaekwondo during gym class. TACC occupies threeclassrooms on the upper floor of the 1921 building.

Kent Keller stands byone of the backdrops ina room where four inde-pendent photographersshare equipment.

their needs. Kent put thesigns up, Adam saw thesigns, called Kent and 15minutes later they met atthe school. "This hasworked out perfectly forour business," said Adamwho occupies space in thenewest area of the school, which is the 1985 single-story addition. A pianorepair/restoration businessowned by Truman Soggeoccupies a room in theoriginal building. Thespace he occupies is theformer teachers’ lounge. The third business is theTrain A Child Center start-ed by the Church of theNazarene , formerly ofByron. Johann Marsland, said it made sense for theirchurch to also move to theMantorville site since theywould be spending somuch time at the Train AChild Center. Johann isthe Train A Child Center(TACC) administrator andboard chairman. Hedescribes the center as acombination of homeschool support and private

school. TACC staff help par-ents facilitate developmentof their children with amoral and spiritual founda-tion as well as educationaldiscipline. Jennifer Beyst isthe owner/director ofLearningRX Brain TrainingCenter of Rochester, and sheworks in cooperation withTACC. She works with stu-dents at TACC to help thembecome better learners by"training the brain". In the1921 section of the building

four independent photogra-phers share space andequipment. There is a vari-ety of lighting and back-grounds. By sharing theequipment, they save manycosts, including rent. Thenewest tenant is theWooden Nickel FudgeCompany. They manufac-ture, store, package andship from the rooms in the1978 section of the build-ing. According to Kent, theschool kitchen has becomea perfect setup for makingfudge. The WoodenNickel Fudge Company, formerly located inRochester, does not doretail sales. They producefor companies like HickoryFarms. Over the Christmasholiday one order forHickory Farms was 33,000one pound boxes of fudge. Each package containedfour varieties of fudge, weighing one-fourth poundeach. "Their lease was upand they were scramblingto find a place," said Kent.As it turned out theMantorville location hasproved to be ideal and thereis room for them to expand.During the peak time of theyear the two principal own-ers can have up to 12 staffworking with them. “I

enjoy seeing the tremendous interest people within the com-munity have for seeing “their” school building “alive andwell.” The Mantorville City Council, Mantorville City Halland the Mantorville EDA have been very helpful in bringingthese new businesses to Mantorville,” said Keller "I thinkwe are going in the right direction with the building. I amgetting to the point where I might start to get a return on theinvestment," said Keller. The building has come a long wayfrom the when there was talk of taking the wrecking ball tothe building. "This building is a resource for the community.I’ve driven by it for 30 years on my way to work. I didn’twant to see the building destroyed," added Keller.

Made

by Randy CarlsenThere are a number of different ways for

singles to meet. Shirley Huff and JeromePermann decided to give e-Harmony a try.Jerome had been single nine years and said itwas the “free offer” that grabbed his atten-tion. Shirley said that as a single for sevenyears it was lonely and she wanted compan-ionship.

Jerome described himself as alone, work-ing and taking care of his bills. Shirley point-ed out many people say if they divorced ortheir spouse died they would never get mar-ried again. Until that has happened to some-one they can’t relate. “I have friends, but itstill gets lonely,” said Shirley.

With e-Harmony they had to answer ques-tions for an on-line survey that took about 45minutes. Both wanted to find someone local,Christian, with integrity and had children.Shirley has five children and seven grand-children and Jerome four kids and two grand-children. “I did not want someone who didnot have any kids. That wouldn’t haveworked,” said Shirley.

Forcing a grin, Jerome said he was a littleapprehensive because Shirley was older. “Idon’t think he was real comfortable withthat,” smiled Shirley. Jerome adds, “My firstwife was 10 years younger than me so Iguess I needed a more mature women,” saidJerome.

As part of the e-Harmony process of find-ing a match, Shirley sent Jerome five ques-tions. A month and then two months went by-no response. “I didn’t know if I wanted to

start dating,” said Jerome. “Iwas still communicating with acouple of other women.”

e-Harmony had asked ifthey should give Jerome a“nudge” so he might respondto her five questions. Then ithappened. Both were sittinghome alone on New Year’sEve and Jerome responded tothe questions. That was fol-lowed by a guided communi-cation that was advised

through the service. They met for two hours(was to be limited to an hour) at Panera inRochester. “He walked in and had this hugesmile on his face,” said Shirley. “After talk-ing for two hours we were very comfortablewith each other,” added Jerome.

“The kids liked him,” which Shirleythought was important too. Jerome’s childrenfelt the same way.

The dating became serious. Jerome andShirley and his sister and brother-in law(Jerome is from a family of 10) took a trip toDoor County, Wisconsin. Jerome proposed toShirley on Washington Island. They met inJanuary and married November 28, 2008 atChrist Community Church in Rochester. They also took time for pre-marriage coun-seling.

From the time she started with e-HarmonyShirley Huff was looking for companionship. She found love and a husband. “I think Ichanged her mind,” smiled Jerome.

Jerome and Shirley Permann live inByron. Shirley has been driving school busfor 30 years at Kasson-Mantorville. Jeromedrives a semi truck three/four days a week. They had different hours with Jerome drivingtruck at night and Shirley working during theday and sometimes driving school bus atnight and on the weekend. The schedulesapparently did not stop them from growingtogether.

“It might not be for everybody, but e-Harmony worked for us,” said Shirley.“We’ve been married four-and-a-half yearsand it’s been good for us,” added Jerome.

On-line dating service worked for Jerome and Shirley PermannShirley (Huff) and

Jerome’s story-said at their wedding

In thinking of something that might be amusing to our guests on this special night, I think Iwill have to go back on our verge of meeting each other. Unknown to me, my time was actual-ly running out. As we were introduced through the internet on e-Harmony, I was initially pro-crastinating with being matched with Shirley. I, one might say, had put Shirley on the backburner of the stove to simmer on low heat. My interests was pointing me in different directions,to perhaps, different matches of potential mates. Try to understand, my guests, I did have awide variety of good choices. While Shirley was simmering on the back burner for a period oftime, I think like something of two months, I was taking advantage of exercising the field ofchoices. As I noted, Shirley was about to delete me and move on. There must have been some-thing inside her heart that told her that the burner that she was sitting for two months wasabout to be turned up. New Year's Eve last year was a very good night to stay home and reviewand re-evaluate my situation. I decided to check the heat on this particular burner and decid-ed it was requiring some attention. Although I was also being pulled in another direction, Ithought, what will it hurt if I attend to Shirley simmering on low heat. WOW! I am so delight-ed that Shirley has the patience that she has, A very wonderful attribute that signifies a verywonderful woman! And I am very thankful to God how everything turned out. Shirley immedi-ately responded to my communication through e-Harmony website and we were well on ourway finding out about each other and our interests. A week later after intense internet dialogue,we met in person at Panera Bread. According to e-Harmony, we were to only visit the first timeabout an hour. That hour went by so fast with our enthusiasm for each other that we broke therule and visited for approximately two hours over cups of tea and coffee. I think we liked eachother, you think? Shirley was my answer to prayer, and when we wait on our Lord, no matterhow long it may take, he can deliver the prize. Shirley and I scheduled for ourselves anotherdate and the rest becomes a history of many beautiful memories that led us to this wonderfulevening to be shared with our families and guests.

Shirley’s story-said at their wedding

Jerome and I were first matched on e-Harmony in August of 2007. I saw his picture and hishuge smile! His profile was of a man with faith and integrity, which are great qualities I wasdrawn to. He didn't choose to communicate with me so later on, I chose some questions/romtheir guided material to send to him, but he didn't answer for a long time! Well, a few monthslater, e-Harmony asked me if I wanted to "nudge" him to let him know I was still waiting foranswers so I did! On December 30, he did answer and we started communication on NewYear's Eve. After awhile, he did tell me later that he wasn't quite sure about an "older" woman!!We went through the guided communication that they advised us to do and when we do meet,it should be no more than an hour. We planned to meet at Panera Bread on Jan 7th, 2008. Iarrived about one minute before he did and when he walked through the door with that hugesmile and looked at me, I just knew there was something good happening! He had a coffee, Ihad tea and we talked for two hours!! We decided then we wanted this to continue and so itdid! We had answered guided questions and told each other many things about our lives beforewe met. We knew each of us had a lot of family and he still had one son in high school. He wasa night truck driver with crazy hours and I worked during the day and sometimes evenings andweekends with my driving, so it wasn't a normal dating routine. He would always say "it iswhat it is" so it has become our cliche. Eventually we found time to meet some of each other'sfamily with positive results. My Wendy found a way to have fun with him and nicknamed himJeromski! He wasn't sure about that at first. When he met and got to know her, he laughed andreturned it with calling her Wenski!

Jerome has been a member of this church for many years and I had moved from mine, so Iwent with him and have come to feel very welcome here. He had been alone for a long time andI think there were many second lookers wondering who this woman was with him. As time wenton, I was greeted by my first name too, and also found some people here that I knew. I feel Ihave found the right person to share my life with and we both feel that we were guided andblessed to have found each other at this time of our lives. We thank our Holy Father for that.

Sea salt popular ingredient at theLast Tuesday Lynette Nash,

owner of The ChocolateShoppe, and her staff werebusy placing an order for a cus-tomer consisting of 200 one-fourth pound bags of sea saltcaramels. Sea salt is the currentrage for chocolate and othersweets.

"Sea salt on chocolatealmost makes the chocolateexplode," said Lynette. Sea saltis used for cooking and in cos-metics. It is salt produced fromthe evaporation of sea water, quite different from the tablesalt mined out of the ground.

What's going to be a hotitem for Valentine's Day?Lynette does not hesitate insaying sea salt caramels."Caramels have always been

popular," said Nash. "Sea saltenhances the flavor."

Sea salt on top of a carameldipped in chocolate could becompared to licking salt on theside of a glass before taking adrink of a margarita.

The Chocolate Shoppe alsohas sea salt toffee squares, tur-tles and fudge. Sea salt is acondiment that puts the finish-ing touch on an already excel-lent piece of chocolate orcaramel.

Lynette Nash has been mak-ing chocolate for 23 years soshe should know what the pub-lic likes when it comes tochocolate. Throwing in a dashof sea salt gives the finishedproduct a little extra kick!

Lynette Nash dips the caramels in chocolate and daughterAlexa tops each one off with a dash of sea salt.

Elyse Davis, employed at The Chocolate Shoppe13 years, is putting together an order of sea saltcaramels.

Erin (Houston) and RickWardrope were what youmight consider experiencedon-line daters. Both admit tobeing shy so communicatingon-line was easier for bothto express themselves.

Erin and Rick previouslyhad met boyfriends and girl-friends on-line when theymet on-line in August of2008. “I sent him a messageout of the blue. I didn’t thinkat first we would have any-thing in common,” said Erin.

The first night they actu-ally talked on the phone theconversation lasted threehours. “I don’t think wetalked on the phone threetimes during our entire rela-tionship,” said Erin.

Rick grew up inMinneapolis and was livingin Coon Rapids when theyfirst met. Two weeks afterthe phone conversation theydecided to meet halfway, inCannon Falls at a restaurant. The first impression waspositive for both and theyended up going to a park inCannon Falls. The firstmeeting lasted six hours. Infact Erin’s father BruceHouston even called to see ifshe was all right.

“He really showed inter-est in my work and otherthings about me,” said Erin.Rick admitted to being a lit-tle nervous and recalledspilling his pop in the backof her car when they weregoing to the park. “It was alittle embarrassing,” saidRick.

The couple had manycommon interests, includingmusic, movies, animals andboth consider themselvesshy and “homebodies”.Rick, who is a mechanic,

The Earned Income Tax Credit has madethe lives of working people a little easiersince 1975. EITC can be a boost for workerswho earned $50,270 or less in 2012. Yet theIRS estimates that one out of five eligible tax-payers fails to claim their EITC each year. The IRS wants everyone who is eligible forthe credit to get the credit that they’ve earned.

Here are the top five things the IRS wantsyou to know about this credit.

• EITC is valuable. The EITC not onlyreduces the federal tax you owe, but couldresult in a refund. You base the amount ofEITC on your earned income and the numberof qualifying children in your household. Theaverage credit was around $2,200 last year. Ifyou qualify, the credit could be worth up to$5,891.

• Review your eligibility. If your finan-cial, marital or parental situations changefrom year to year, you should review theEITC eligibility rules. Just because you didn’tqualify last year doesn’t mean you won’t thisyear.

• File your return. If you are eligible forthe EITC, you must file a federal income taxreturn to claim the credit – even if you are nototherwise required to file. Remember toinclude Schedule EIC, Earned Income Credit,

when you file your Form 1040. If you fileForm 1040A, use the EIC worksheet andkeep it for your records.

• Know the qualifications. You shouldunderstand the qualifications for EITC beforeclaiming it, including:

• You do not qualify for EITC if your taxfiling status is Married Filing Separately.

• You must have a valid Social Securitynumber for yourself, your spouse – if filinga joint tax return – and any qualifying childlisted on Schedule EIC.

• You must have earned income. Youhave earned income if you are paid wages, you are self-employed, you have incomefrom farming or you receive disabilityincome.

• Married couples and single peoplewithout children may qualify. If you do nothave qualifying children, you must also meetage and residency requirements as well asdependency rules.

• Special rules apply to members of theU.S. Armed Forces in combat zones.Members of the military can elect to includetheir nontaxable combat pay as earnedincome for the purpose of computing theEITC. Even if you make this choice, yourcombat pay will remain nontaxable.
