How did it get to be summer sofast? Nice warm days tending toHOT so lots of opportunity to enjoyour club and the Napa River. Quitea number of our members are al-ready in the cruising mode. Marchat Loch Lomond was a kick andApril offers Opening Day On TheBay. So far about a dozen boats areheaded to Berkeley for a great time.May takes a number of members tothe Delta Cruise starting with theSacramento Jazz Festival to be joined by others at Driftwood andbeyond. Think about joining us byland even as most of the clubs havefacilities for recreational vehicles ifboating is not your way to Nirvanathese days.

Even at the club a lot is happen-ing. Cinco de Mayo s in a coupleweeks to start some nice summeractivities. Mark and Nancy Lessleralong with Vice Commodore LarryWolfe with a lot of help from Lindahave been working hard to get agreat event going. Clyde and Kath-leen Smith are working closely withthe others to make sure everythingcomes together. We are blessed tohave such involved members.

There will be a cruise-in, blessing of

the fleet, a flag ceremony, games, music and dinner. Whew!

Plan on bidding on the wonderfulbaskets Karen Agnew and her teamare putting together for the SeniorProject. This is the major fund-raiser for the project. Especially tothe male members.Mothers Dayis coming on fast..super gifts andyou may be able to write off part ofany purchase? Or maybe not.but

it doesnt matter when we can showour clubs generosity to the commu-nity.

Our club belongs to P.I.C.Y.A.,the Pacific Inter-Club Yacht Asso-ciation, where we pay dues everyyear to keep up with regional thingsgoing on in the boating community. At the last meeting we were re-minded there are 4 annual scholar-ships worth $2500 each to anymember or family member includ-ing grandchildren. Last year therewere only 2 applications received,so anyone with college aged rela-tions are encouraged to apply.Shame on us if there is such a niceopportunity available and we donot take advantage of it. Get yourkiddos involved now for next schoolyear! Maxine Mass, Larry Wolfeand I are delegates to P.I.C.Y.A.You can contact any of us for de-tails.

Have a fun and safe time on thewater and join us at the club!

At the Oakland boat Showlast week, I asked if the CoastGuard was monitoring DSC(Digital Select Calling). New on thewest coast for recreational boaters, this is a feature of some VHF radiosthat provides, upon activation, adigital distress signal. In an emer-

gency you hold the button down for5 seconds. During a distress alertDSC provides identification, natureof distress, and if your VHF radio isconnected to a GPS, the exact posi-tion of the boat.

It is also an excellent means ofmaking a routine individual call on

CH70 to another DSC equippedboater using their 9-digit MaritimeMobile Service Identity (MMSI).Consult your owners manual. Avalid MMSI can be obtained fromthe FCC, Boat US, Sea Tow and theU.S. Power Squadron. The CoastGuard can track your exact loca-tion. If you are a member of BoatUS, you can apply on line for yourMMSI number. The website isboatus.com. I easily got my MMSInumber but the hard part for mewas to program the number intomy VHF radio.

If you receive a DSC distressalert, do not answer immediately.Allow a USCG station to contactthe distress vessel. If no contact is

heard, call the distress vessel onVHF16. Once you have made con-tact, call the USCG on VHF CH16or by any available means and tellthem you are relaying a distress.Give them the vessels positionidentification, nature of distressand vessel description.

Cellular phones are not rec-ommended for ship-to-ship safetycommunications or communica-tions with rescue vessels. If youmake a distress call on a cellularphone, only the one party that youare calling will be able to hear youand none of the boats in your im-mediate vicinity will know you arein trouble. Locating a cellularcaller is hard to do. If you dontknow precisely where you are, thecoast Guard will have difficultyfinding your location on the water.Use your DSC VHF radio.

Lets make this a safe, fun-filled boating season. See you onthe water and at the club.

    Larry Wolfe, Vice Commodore

It is official; The 2009 boatingseason is upon us effectiveApril 26th. I was not able to at-tend the Berkley cruise thisyear, however I had my sonsand their friends out on the bayon Sunday for opening day. Iremember when I moved herefrom the east coast about 30years ago 'Opening Day" was a

    big event; this year was a littledisappointing. 30 years agoabout 1 in every 5 boats in themarina were out on the bay;

everyone was in a celebratorymood, refreshments were flow-ing on all the boats, many boatswere displaying their toplesscrew members, water balloonswere abundant, and unfortu-nately collisions were frequent.I am not sure if it was theweather, the economy, or thedoom and gloom we get bom-barded with every day by thenews media; but it is safe to say

it was not as big a deal as thepast. Even in the past all thenews stations were covering theOpening Day events on the Bay;this year not much was said.

Now on to more pleasantsubjects--WE NOW HAVE RE-CIPROCITY with THE SAINT PE-TERSBURG YACHT CLUB lo-cated in down town St Peters-burg, Florida as well as an addi-tional facility on St Petersburg

Beach. The clubhouse is openTuesday thru Sunday and haslive music every night (exceptSunday) in the Heritage Lounge.

The club offers lunch and din-ner every day and breakfast onmost days. There is an outdoor'TIKI' bar on the second floornext to the swimming pool, thatis a must place to visit. If youare in the Florida area a trip toSPYC should be on your thingsto do list. You can access theclub activities on their websitewww.spyc.org. Our first mem-bers to take advantage of this

wonderful experience are Sallyand Phil Craig who are there asthis column is being written.Angel & Art Lewis have also en-joyed time there as Seeta's andmy guest. We hope more of ourclub members will join us as weare there several times a year.

    City Manager's Message:Trying Something New

This is a special time ofthe year. Its a timethat brings out the kidin all of us, particularlyat our signature

Christmas at the Wa-terfront event one ofmy personal all-timefavorites!Given the stressfuleconomic climate, ourCity Council and staff

have gone beyond the norm to make this a spe-cial holiday season for the community. We con-tinue our tradition of Santas arrival by boat, thetree lighting, bonfire, street crafts and food, andfireworks, while adding some new treasures tothe mix. Consider hybrid-ice skating, Christmasgift-making for the kids, a designer tree auctionsponsored by the business community to supportarea charities, and more lights than you everimagined!

To honor the season, we are sharing a few ofCity Halls human stories in the following pages, along with tips to make this a special sea-son. Those that choose the public sector as acareer tend to embrace the concepts of serviceabove self and building community. And that isparticularly true for your Suisun City employeesand volunteers.

Inside, we have stories honoring the goodworks of our firefighters, police department per-sonnel, and housing authority staff, as well as thevolunteer efforts of our business community. Its

comforting to see the collaboration and team-work that makes things happen.

We also recognize the challenging times we areall facing. Weve included an article outliningwhat Council and staff are doing to help youaddress the impacts of foreclosures. Despitethese challenges, we hope you take pride in whatyou have in your own backyard. Come to theWaterfront District, walk around for a while andinteract with nature. Or, if you prefer, connectwith a bowl of avgolemono soup, sushi, pad Thaior the best dang lemon meringue tart in theworld.

In stressful times, it can help to try something

    new!

Nine NVYC boats arrived at the

Berkeley Yacht Club on Friday morningjust in time to beat the wind. StrangeTrip, Why Knot II, Stahr Ship,CKing Fun, Dancing Wolfe, Lazy

Daze, Betty D., Lady Di andOmega sterned into the dock with alittle help from their friends.

BYC members warned us about theproliferation of the raccoon populationand their propensity to climb aboardboats at the dock. (Several years agothis actually happened - ask GarySchager about the time he grabbed oneby the tail as it climbed on his boat.) The

wily animals have again taken up resi-dence beneath the clubhouse and havebecome more aggressive - apparentlyanimal control had to be called when awhole family of them could not berousted from a boat. Many raccoontracks on swim platforms in the morn-ing.

Nineteen cruisers squeezed into thesalon aboard Strange Trip where the

Steve and Ellen Vartan hosted eveningcocktails before heading up the club-house for a barbecue. It was a greatview watching BYC racers cross the fin-ish line and battle the wind to lower theirspinnakers.

Since it was Opening Day on SanFrancisco Bay weekend Berkeley sailorswere out in force. One race director triedto shanghai Scott and Diane Browns

Lady Di to act as a race boat becausethe one scheduled to help hadnt ar-rived. Being the end tie boat isnt alwaysthe best place to be. The BYC boat fi-nally arrived just in time. Lady Distayed put.

It was the maiden voyage for Boband Joyce Cravens Omega, a 40 Ti-ara. Lots of teasing about Bobs changefrom sail to power but all who toured

her declared her a winner. Joyce tellsthe story that Bob promised her jewelryfor Christmas and fulfilled his pledgeby buying her a Tiara.

Chris Fultz and Alan Mueller rodedown alone in Lazy Daze. Lori andNancy drove down on Saturday...butwhat happens in Berkeley stays inBerkeley. Lots of fishing gear onboard.

Our reputation as the Napa ValleyYacht and Kennel Club has been tar-nished a bit because the number ofcruising dogs has dwindled but Mandy,Roxanne and Pete all did their best tomake sure that dog-petting was ashared and required task. The Ma-goons 8 1/2 year old granddaughter,Courtney Callaghan, proved more thanwilling to walk Roxanne.

Saturday was glorious and a break-fast buffet on the dock, arranged bySteve V., was a great start to the day.Merrilee and Joy both made the samecoffee cake recipe; a tie was declaredand they graciously agreed to share therecipe. (Please see next page.)

Since windy conditions were fore-cast on San Pablo Bay, we headedhome early Sunday morning. The wa-ter was smooth as silk and we were allat our docks before noon.

See you on the next cruise.
