CommodoreAs I write this, it is amazing

to see there are only 2 monthsremaining in our current year toaccomplish a number of thingswe have been working on forquite some time. Those are in

addition to all the things ourclub normally does during ayear, such as special events,cruise-outs, hosting other clubsand creating a place memberscan enjoy.

Probably the most important job is to get a new lease inplace with extended terms toallow our club to do some of

the physical improvementsplanned in my theme ofBuilding Today Toward ABright Tomorrow. With a lotof help from our negotiatingteam and some additional helpfrom resources outside the clubwe believe we are now actuallymaking progress in getting the

job done. My goal has alwaysbeen to have a lease in placeprior to new officers takingover so they are not faced withanother year of uncertainty indealing with our landlord, theCity of Napa. I now believethe lease can be completedprior to the end of the year ifwe keep up the positive ap-

proach we have developed indealing with the issue.

Another project is to extendour dock to provide better ac-cess to our club, especially byvisiting boaters. Getting ap-proval from the Flood ControlDistrict has required hiring anengineering firm to do certainhydrology and debris loading

analysis. A firm, Winzler &Kelly, is in the process of beingretained to do a design model. The analysis should be done inthe near term to allow us tohave a waiver from the Dis-trict. Once that is done, the ac-tual work should not take long. The cost to the club will not betoo great since the docks came

    at no fee.The Membership Annual

Meeting and Change Of Watchis on November 21st at theNapa Valley Country Club. Anotice has been sent to you viae-mail and in the club newslet-ter flyer as well as here now tomeet the at least 20 day notifi-

cation period stated in our by-laws.. An agenda for the meet-ing will be issued shortly. Please plan to attend to honorand support the incoming vol-unteer officers and CommitteeChairs that will serve our clubin 2010. They willingly givetheir time and effort to makeyour club successful and they

deserve our appreciation bycoming to the meeting andChange of Watch.

We welcome new members,Judy and Dave Winckler thismonth. They are a fun couplefrom S. California I know youwill welcome into our midst! They are sail boaters living inthe Napa Yacht Club that you

will surely enjoy meeting.October has been a great

month at the club for dinnersand entertainment! The GreatZappo entertained us on the23rd with some magic. Evensome skeptics (me) were enter-tained. The 30th is a Halloweenparty with a cruise-in to boot.See the flyer sent earlier for de-

tails. You dont know what youmiss if you skip for even aweek!

Have a fun and safe time onthe water and join us at theclub!

Taco Tuesday on October 6th was a lotof fun and easy to pull off thanks toNancy & Bob Weeks, Tom Nunen andLinda. At $1.00 a taco we didnt getrich, but didnt lose money either. Nexttime might be an all you can eat for$5.00. Watch for more hotdog or ham-burger nights.

Many thanks to Diane and Scott Brown

for the Fleet Week cruise out. Our firststop was Pier 39 in San Francisco. Wehad a cocktail party Friday evening onthe Lady Di. The next day people werepacked into every available space aroundPier 39 and in boats waiting for the airshow to begin. It began with a BANGbut fizzled as the fog rolled in and theBlue Angels made just one pass. Sundaythey had better weather and they put onan abbreviated show. The Dancing Wolfscooted for homeport on Monday to beatthe storm coming in. The rest of the

cruise headed for Paradise Cay and therest of the ports.

If you missed Zappo, you missed a funevening. He played to a full house andgot many of our members involved in hismagic. Thanks to Nancy and MarkLessler. Our dinner was by Sharon Phil-lips & Don Buresh and Art and AngelaLewis.

Thank you Al Mueller and Chris Fultzfor the air conditioner in the kitchen. Itmakes cooking so much nicer and cooler. After parties or Friday night dinners,

please be sure to use the expense/receiptform and envelopes located on the righthand side of the bar. After completiondrop it in the mail slot behind the bar forreimbursement. Also a reminder---try tokeep the dinners affordable, $10 or un-der. Keep in mind that the 4 hosts andthe 2 bartenders eat for free. A smallprofit margin of 20% should be added in.

If you choose to have part or all of itcatered, it is really difficult to show aprofit.

The Fall Management Conference forPICYA (Pacific Inter-Club Yacht Asso-ciation) was held Saturday, October 24,2009 at the Aeolian Yacht Club in Ala-meda. Don Buresh, Bill Newton, BobWeeks and I attended. We heard of thehard work of the RBOC (RecreationalBoats of California), a nonprofit govern-mental advocacy organization that worksto protect and enhance boaters interest.

RBOC is advocating to protect boaterrights and to assure access for continuednavigation where any control structure(such as gates or barriers) is planned forplacement across a navigable Delta waterway. This has become especially impor-tant as state and federal officials moveforward with the 2 Gates Project withbarriers to be placed across two Deltawaterways. Please see the attached letterin the newsletter. Before November 17th

mail a copy to address on the letter orFAX a copy to the number given. Do

your part! If Southern California siphonsour Delta water South, our beautiful

Delta waterways could become a saltymarsh.

Reminder----Send your money in toLinda 2297 First Ave. 94558 for theChange of Watch, November 21st. Therewill be NO Friday night dinner on the20th.

    Live Your Dream----Larry Wolfe, ViceCommodore

It is approaching the end of the of theyear and The Change Of Watch is uponus; followed by Thanksgiving and the

December holidays. This means I can relinquish my status

of Rear and next year focus on Vice;an activity where my personal inclina-tions are more compatible---of course Ihave yet to read the job description.

    As rear commodore, I do not havemuch to report for this month;

so I would like to talk a little aboutthe efforts of Clay Parker this year. Hehas worked very hard on the lease nego-

tiations with the City of Napa and as faras I can tell has put more efforts on be-half of the club then most Commodoresin the past. He has the help of a fewregular club members; however, he hasalways attended every meeting andbeen on point with all the issues thathave come up. The club owes Clay agreat deal of gratitude.

    Now on another note; last week theboard had a vote on placing a flatscreen tv to replace the existing tv,which has outlived most expectations;

this vote was narrowly defeated. Theproponents were Larry Wolfe and my-self.

The thoughts were that it would leadto greater use of the club when sporting

events were on and would lead to ahotdog Monday or a taco Thursday. If we have greater activities surround-ing the use of the club, it may lead to alarger more diverse membership. Thereason that I am mentioning this in the

column is that it was a close vote and ifyou as members have any feelings onthe subject please make them known tothe board.

Hope to see you at The Change ofWatch

SENIOR XMAS PROGRAMMany years ago Jackie Finnegan and Kathy Nord began our Senior Xmas Program. The idea was to give gift certifi-cates to needy seniors. At that time Vallergas matched whatever the Napa Valley Yacht Club raised for this program. So, if we had $1, with Vallergas donation, we were able to give $2 . Now we raise somewhere around $5,000 each

year and Vallergas matches our $2 with $1 which enables us to give away $7,000 to $8,000.We collect this money all year long with different types of fund raisers, and all the money comes from our club mem-bers.The names for these gifts come from the Volunteer Center. They are nice enough to let us use their banking depart-ment, which enables us to take the gifts off of our taxes because it is a charitable donation. We now make gift bags and try to include some little extras to go along with the certificates, and then our club membershand deliver them to the recipients. If you would like to help with any of these different steps, please give me a call.Thanx, Karen Agnew 255-8115

Senior Xmas Program.Sorry to say, we have not had as many fund raisers as in the past, so needless to say, we are behind in our funds forthe Senior Program. As always, the biggest fund raiser is in the cash donations that are made from now until December 6th. Remember, all

donations made by check or cash are really handy come tax time next year.Once again, due to the many thankful letters we received, we will also ask that you bring all those little soaps, sham-poos, lotions, etc., that we all bring home from our trips. We had so many last year, that we filled the bags full and do-nated the rest to the Women's Shelter. Charlie and I just made a trip to Florida, and due to all those "little" items Ipicked up, we were able to pay for extra luggage on the return trip home.Last year, we gave out 81 gift bags, and included sparkling cider, gloves donated by Earle and Shirley Deits, and ofcourse the $100 dollar gift certificates, Beaney Babies, and a little hand made mouse. If anyone has more ideas aboutwhat to include, let me know. Just remember, we will need at least 81 of them.Soooooooooo, please dig deep and send in as much as you can, and hopefully we will be able to do at least as muchas last year. Here is to your first wished Merry Xmas of the year,Karen .

I wanted to be the first thereand the last to leave, I did notwant to miss a thing. This was awonderful opportunity to see the

traditions of Fleet Week fromon board the U.S. Coast GuardCutter Buoy Tender GeorgeCobb . George Cobb was anAmerican lighthouse keeper whoserved at the Point Bonita Lightnear San Francisco. On Decem-ber 26, 1896 he saved threeyoung men from drowning nearthe lighthouse, for which he wasawarded a Silver LifesavingMedal.

A United States Coast GuardBuoy Tender (WLM 564) basedin San Pedro, California wasnamed for Cobb. The UnitedStates Coast Guard commis-sioned a new Keeper-class of

coastal buoy tenders in the 1990'sthat are 175 feet (53 m) in lengthand named after Lighthouse keep-ers. We were honored to be on

board with several members of theGeorge Cobb family.

Fleet Week is a spectacular week-end family event .

Fleet Week is a United StatesNavy, United States Marine Corpsand United States Coast Guard tra-

dition in which active militaryships recently deployed in overseas

operations dockin a variety ofhomeland major cities for one

week. At certain hours, the public

can take a guided tour of the ships.Often, Fleet Week isaccompanied by military demon-

strations and air shows such as pro-vided by the Blue Angels.

NOTE: The Blue Angels performancewas cancelled Saturday due to fog andclouds. They are scheduled to fly Sundayat 3p.m., weather permitting.
