M arch is full of events.March 12 will be a MardiGras Night so work onyour samba. In my past life I haveattended the actual events in both

New Orleans and Rio. We may beable to pull off some New Orleansactivities in Napa; however, anythingclosely related to Rio may find ourmembers incarcerated! There have been some requests forinformation on the Americas Cup.Heres the first update: For 2013there will two new classes of boats: anAC-45 and the AC-72. The AC-45 willbe raced in 2011 & 2012; these aredesigned as training boats to teach thesailing teams how to train and racewinged-sail multi-hulls. The actualAmericas Cup boats will be the AC-72s. Both boats will be more demand-ing and faster than any boats seen inprior Cup races. Through 2011 andearly 2012, the AC-45 will be raced ina number of regattas. After March 30,2012, all races will be with the AC-72sand continue up to the Cup. BetweenJuly 13 and September 1, 2013, theLouis Vuitton Cup and the DefenderSeries will take place in San FranciscoBay. The tentative schedule for the34th defense of the Americas Cupwill be between Sept 7 and 22. Therace committee is still working onrace courses and those will be re-leased at a later date. A friend of mine, Kevin Weinberg, owner/chef of the Walnut Creek Yacht Club, gaveme these updates. If you are in Wal-nut Creek, the food is excellent andthe NVYC burgee proudly displayed.

T he Super Bowl partywas successful withthe Parkers comingoff the big winners. The

chili cook-off had five cooksparticipating this year. ClayParker was the big winnerwith myself running a closesecond and Linda Wolfelanding third place.

Our Friday Night Dinnersand Sunday Brunches justget better and better.Thank you to all the hostsand cooks. Joyce Craven isdoing a super job of gettingthe word out on meals andkeeping reservation lists.

The bar is having a goodyear under the leadership of Donald Buresh and SharonPhillips. Some terrific vol-unteer bartenders are givingthem some nights off includ-ing Bill & Elizabeth Moore,Lynn Pritchett, LynneChamplin, Judy Garcia, Art

Lewis, Mark Lessler andTom Lupori and LindaWolfe.

Social Chairs Lindsay andMisty did an outstandingdecorating job for the Val-entines party. We even hadwhile tablecloths with redroses and truffles. Thankyou, ladies.

F ebruary brought the returnof rain and cold weather;not the best for boating.

    The Safety Workshop was held

on February 16 and attended by tenmembers and two guests. We had adetailed rundown of VHF radioprocedures which included distressprocedures and the new DSC sys-tem. The next Safety Workshopwill be in May. It is planned tohave CPR training given by a li-censed instructor. Stay tuned fordetails.

The annual Vessel Safety Checkswere given on February 26. CurtisHan and his team from USCGA didtheir usual fine job. The weatherwas worrisome and COLD but weprevailed. I didnt see any snow butthere was sure a lot of ice on thedock and boats the morning of in-spection. We had fair attendancecompared to last year; I guess theominous weather predictions keptquite a few at home in their nicewarm beds. CKING FUN, LADYDI, STAHR SHIP, GRAND CRU,PELICAN, MYSTIQUE, GENTLYDOWN THE STREAM and ourVice Commodores pontoon boatwere present. No one failed inspec-tion. The fleet was blessed by ourown Rev. Tom Nunan

Our March cruise-out is our an-nual St. Patricks Day cruise toLoch Lomond YC led by KurtStahr. It is scheduled for FridayMarch 18, returning home on Sun-day. Lots of fun things are plannedand this is always a popular desti-nation. Five boats are signed up andthere is room for more. Call Kurt.

Super Bowl XLV: Great game, Great Chili, 2 big screen TVs and money changing hands...who could ask for more? Phil Champlin reports: The super bowl party was great fun. The photo of Dirk and Seeta captured her getting her prize for one of the football pool bets ($25) which Dirk presented to her as his Valentine. Seetas daughter helped out by selling squares on the raffle. Chili prize winners were 1st: Clay Parker, 2nd: Bill Newton and 3rd: Linda Wolfe. The judges confessed that choosing a winner was a tough job. Bartender was Lynne Champlin and Misty Kaltreider made the cornbread and coleslaw.
