    NVYC December, 2009 News-letter

    Commodore

With my year as Commodoreof our wonderful club coming toa close there are so many peopleto thank I will likely have todouble the size of the article thismonth.just kidding! BUT it

has been a privilege to serve andto see the officers and commit-tees for 2010 stepping up to theopportunities waiting to be cap-tured.

Our Change Of Watch was aspectacular success thankslargely to Vice CommodoreLarry and Linda Wolfe. Goodcompany, good food, good music

and a chance to recognize every-one that has made our club whatit is. From Charter members toPast Commodores and all theCommittee Chairs for 2009 andincoming for 2010 we are trulyblessed for all they contribute. Our members have all made thisyear a special time and one wewill remember for a long time.

A huge thanks and gratitude goto Mary Parker for hanging inthere this year to keep me ontrack. with all the issues and onoccasion to tell me to chillwhen I got too excited aboutsome things.

With a lot of help our club wasable to accomplish some majorgoals this year. Building the new

deck was a challenge, but doneon time and under budget. Get-ting our ABC permit expandedto include the deck and patio/bocce area was a big deal sincethe landlord wanted to call ourleased area a city park. Thanksto VC Larry, especially, withhelp from Elisabeth Frater forguiding that issue to completion.

We are told a new lease can becompleted prior to the end of theyear with the City staff recom-mending approval by City Coun-cil in December. After years ofwork by many of our memberswe can now finally have anagreement in place rather thanface a possibility of having tomove the club in 2010. . It is notwhat we originally conceived,

but much better than the Citysprevious offers. The term willbe for twelve years with a negoti-ated extension of five years. Wedo not have a requirement toadd approximately $250,000 to$350,000 of improvements theCity wanted at the site if wefailed to enhance the property totheir expectations. The rental

rate will be fixed for the first sixyears and raised the last six. Wewill continue to be able to parkwith the City not deciding toturn the property outside ourleased area into something thatwould take parking away. Fur-ther, the City will help our at-tempt to get the fenced area bythe storage shed straightened outfor better parking. We will make

our clubhouse, patio/bocce areaavailable to outside organiza-tions up to fifteen days per year, but we do that anyway. We canmanage those days through ourPort Captain and can chargesubstantial rent for the use. Ourdocks do not have to be madeavailable for other than our ownuse. As always, the Devil is inthe details and there are a few

clarifications needing to be doneprior to a final document, butwith Staff proactive to our ideasit will be as good a lease as couldbe negotiated with the conditionsthat prevail.

Again my thanks to all of youfor the myriad of things you didto make our club a success in2009!

Have a fun and safe time on thewater and join us at the club!

Is the Napa Valley Yacht Cluba park? Was Napa ValleyYacht Club a park? Thanks toLightning Rod Clay Parkerspersistence and ElisabethFraters expertise, Napa ValleyYacht Club is NOT a park andnever was a park. This now al-lows us to apply for the expan-sion of our ABC license to thenew deck and the Bocci Ballcourt.

Change of Watch ----What anevening it was. If you missed it,you missed a great time, dinner, and music. We had ninety inattendance all decked out in ourfinest and we even made a profit

of $50. One of the high lightswas a surprise announcement byCommodore Clay Parker thatwe have a verbal commitment toour lease with the City of Napa.It was an evening to recognize

and appreciate the many dedi-cated volunteers that keep ourclub running smoothly. And, wewere introduced to next yearsvolunteer committees.

The galley project is off andrunning thanks to Bob Weeks,Don Burish, Mark Lessler andDana Robbers. Bill Newton hasa bid for the tile installation.Dana, Bob Weeks and I went totwo restaurant supply stores inOakland and with thrifty shop-ping received great buys on steelracks, shelving and stainlesssteel tables.

Its not too late to sign-up for

Dec. 28th South Beach, NewYears Eve cruise and party.Give me a call, 253-9158.

    Happy Holidays,

    Vice Commodore,

    Larry Wolfe

This is the last column as 'rearand next year I will be perform-ing the duties for the club as 'vice ' and I am excited. When

you perform as ' rear' ;well, everyone has one and they knowwhat yours looks like; with 'vice' there is a certain amount of

mysticism and subversion. Forexample. one of the first vices isthe dispensing of alcohol whichElizabeth Frater and Bill Kisliuk

have agreed to do it this year.Nancy Weeks is taking over thegalley this year and is currentlyworking on new recipe of lacedbrownies, which she promisesto be very illusionary. Now Imay have a problem with thesocial co-chairs consisting ofMary Parker & Seeta Kruiden-ier who have already scheduleda ladies night with the Chippen-

dale dancers and a men's nightwith a home 'do it yourself ex-pert' and the subject is home re-pair. The OD coordinator is be-ing handled by Mark & NancyLessler; there has been someFriday dinner hold outs in thepast and Mark was selected be-cause he is known to carry agun. Bill Newton is multitaskingthis year as 'rear' and port cap-

tain; he will be assisted by DonBuresh. Don will be on the lookout for any counter band comingthru our port---I believe he

wants a percentage. I read mycolumn over the phone to LarryWolfe and he thought I maywant to review the VC's job de-scription.

I want to thank Philip andSally for there great job with thenews letter over the last fewyears and congratulate them onreceiving Honorable Mention

    from PICYA for their work.

    Happy Holidays,'the rear'

SENIOR XMAS PROGRAMMany years ago Jackie Finnegan and Kathy Nord began our Senior Xmas Program. The idea was to give giftcertificates to needy seniors. At that time Vallergas matched whatever the Napa Valley Yacht Club raised forthis program. So, if we had $1, with Vallergas donation, we were able to give $2 . Now we raise somewherearound $5,000 each year and Vallergas matches our $2 with $1 which enables us to give away $7,000 to$8,000.We collect this money all year long with different types of fund raisers, and all the money comes from our club

members. The names for these gifts come from the Volunteer Center. They are nice enough to let us use their bankingdepartment, which enables us to take the gifts off of our taxes because it is a charitable donation. We now make gift bags and try to include some little extras to go along with the certificates, and then our clubmembers hand deliver them to the recipients. If you would like to help with any of these different steps, please give me a call.Thanx, Karen Agnew 255-8115

Senior Xmas ProgramSorry to say, we have not had as many fund raisers as in the past, so needless to say, we are behind in ourfunds for the Senior Program. As always, the biggest fund raiser is in the cash donations that are made from now until December 6th. Re-

member, all donations made by check or cash are really handy come tax time next year.Once again, due to the many thankful letters we received, we will also ask that you bring all those little soaps, shampoos, lotions, etc., that we all bring home from our trips. We had so many last year, that we filled thebags full and donated the rest to the Women's Shelter. Charlie and I just made a trip to Florida, and due to allthose "little" items I picked up, we were able to pay for extra luggage on the return trip home.Last year, we gave out 81 gift bags, and included sparkling cider, gloves donated by Earle and Shirley Deits, and of course the $100 dollar gift certificates, Beaney Babies, and a little hand made mouse. If anyone hasmore ideas about what to include, let me know. Just remember, we will need at least 81 of them.Soooooooooo, please dig deep and send in as much as you can, and hopefully we will be able to do at least asmuch as last year. Here is to your first wished Merry Xmas of the year,Karen .

Monday, December 7th, at 9:30 A.M.Santas helpers are meeting at theNVYC to write cards and get the

Gift certificates and little Beanie BabiesReady for delivery to the Senior's.Join in the fun for a great cause!
