K
risten and I left South Beach harbor in San Fran-cisco October 14, 2007, after spending FleetWeek in San Francisco Bay with our NVYCfriends, and headed out the Golden Gate. Our
first destination was San Diego to join the Baja Ha Harally to Cabo San Lucas. Until then, we had never done anovernight passage together. Now, 11 countr ies, morethan 80 islands and innumerable fish (and fish stories) wehave spent 130 nights at sea. Along the way, we contin-ued to learn how much we didnt know about ocean sail-ing. We had adventures with the autopilot, watermaker, refrigeration, battery charging, inverters, downwind polesand sails all of which made life aboard challenging. Itonly took time, effort and money to solve most problems.
After 5 months in Mexico, we sailed for 26 days fromPuerto Vallarta to Hiva Oa in the Marquesas, then through
French Polynesia, the Cook Islands, Niue, Tonga to NewZealand. Our original plan was to return home afterspending the cyclone season in New Zealand, but decidedthat returning home after 2 years would be cheating our-selves. News about the economy at home wasnt toocheery either. We spent the next year in Fiji and Vanuatuwhich turn ed out to be a good decision. Of all the amaz-ing places we visited, these island nations, populated withMelanesian peoples (and Indo-Fijians in Fiji), turned out t obe our favorites. These people had the least and gave themost.
Charisma comeshome after 3 year
adventureBy Alan SpenceWe spent the next cyclone season in Savusavu, Fiji, on the Is-
land of Vanua Levu in the cyclone zone. As it turned out, twocyclones hit Fiji th is last season: one on the west side (Mick) andone on the east side (Tomas). Mick had little impact on usthough it destroyed one of our fellow cruisers boats(Moonduster), but Tomas was much closer to being a direct hitat Savusavu; at least two yachts were destroyed and lots ofcrops and homes were damaged. It turned out that we had cho-sen a good shelter and fared well, with only minor damage whenwe were hit by another boat that broke loose from its mooring.
We left Fiji in April this year and headed for home, with stops inSamoa, Christmas Island and Hawaii. Samoa provided manyamazing adventures, one of which unfortunately included thewreck of our good friends Mike & Cindy Millers boat Airwegoas they were following us through the narrow and poorly markedreef pass into Asau Bay on the Island of Savaii. We had left Mex-ico with them and traveled together for most of our journey so itwas devastating for all of us.
Arriving in Hawaii, on the Big Island, was really different fromanywhere else we had traveled. We immediately felt at home, especially with Costco within walking distance and Sierra Ne-
vada Pale Ale on tap at the marina restaurant. We visited all 5 ofthe main Hawaiian islands with some very boisterous sailingacross the renowned channels between islands. We ended upspending a month at the Ala Wai Marina at the end of WaikikiBeach which was a very nice wrap up to our i sland adventures.
The day after our 30th wedding anniversary, Kristen flew homeand I sailed 20 days with friends Scott Brown of the NVYC andMike Wirth of Benicia. It was a great trip with lot s of fish caughtand pleasant seas. Charisma arrived back in Napa on August 24.
Things that made the adventure particul arly great included visit-ing churches wherever we went. This gave us a good connectionwith the local people and it was a blessing to worship the same
God that we do at home with people from very different cultures. Our policy of saying yes whenever we were invited to do any-thing led to some great experiences including cooking and eat-ing a fruit bat (or flying fox as they are called in the islands).
Will we do this again? Well, not before we get our finances inorder and then away well go. Kristen is already planning to flymore of the long passages while I sail with a volunteer crew.Meanwhile, we love being home in the Napa Valley. We expect tobe here working and doing that regular life stuff for at least acouple of years before we embark again.
Charisma is a 53 Amel - 66 mast, 6.5 draft,built in La Rochelle, France in 1987.
