The 2011 Lady Bulldogs look to contend for a conference championship with four-year head coach Ali Alamdari at the helm. In 2010, Adrian had an 11-6-3 overall record and was 4-4 in the MIAA, while making it to the conference semifinals.

“Last year we lost a lot of starters to graduation from the year before and we decided now’s the time to transition from being a defensive minded team to being one who’s going to go out and score goals,” said Alamdari. “We knew we were going to take our lumps because we were very young, but we reached our goal, we wanted to be the top scoring team in the league and we did that. Now we’re hoping that this fall we can really put it all together and be a comprehensive team on both sides of the field.”

Adrian led the MIAA with 121 points, averaging 6.05 a contest and in goals with 43 (2.15 per game). The Lady Bulldogs were also second in the league in assists with 35, averaging 1.75 an outing.

All three players who were selected on the All-MIAA team a year ago are returning. Sam Barker earned First Team honors, while Patti Vaassen and Lauren Cozzi were selected on the Second Team.

Barker had a record-breaking season as a rookie as she set Adrian College’s single-season records for points (44), goals (17) and shots (84). In addition, she already ranks eighth in AC history in points and goals.

“When you find those individual players that are a step above everybody you always have to look a little bit deeper and see what kind of person are they and what kind of leader are they,” Alamdari

said. “Sam really takes that to the next level. She’s a very humble kid and a very hardworking player. And yeah she does score a lot of goals, but it’s

not about her. She’s got that team mentality completely down and you saw that when she got injured.”

Barker was hurt midway through the season last year, but continued to play at a high level. Her actions last year exemplify what the Adrian Bulldogs are all about. Digging deep within themselves and getting the job done.

On the defense, co-captain Kellie Irwin and Patti Vaassen look to anchor the back line. “We expect big things out of defense again,” Alamdari said. In the

net, junior goalie Chayna Wallace led the team with 73 saves in 1,320 minutes played. Wallace’s 1.02 goals allowed per game stood third in the conference. As a team, the defense accumulated

eight shutouts, third-best in the MIAA.

Junior trio midfielders Sam Greene and Lauren Cozzi and forward Courtney Pomeroy also look to make an impact as they provide leadership, while bringing experience to the field.

“Lauren’s one of the best ball handers in the league and we are going to free her up a little bit, so she’s not tracking back defensively and let her showcase her skills,” said Alamdari. “She’s one of the best technical players in the league.”

“Obviously, our first goal is to win the league and there’s no question about that. But a good secondary goal for us that we absolutely expect is that we are going to be in that final four so we can play for a spot to get into the NCAA Tournament this year.”

Joining the Adrian coaching staff is first-year assistant Jacquelyn Donovan. Donovan looks to set new heights for the Lady Bulldogs and make as much or more impact as she did as a student-athlete and a coach at her previous positions.

Prior to Adrian, Donovan spent two years as a graduate assistant coach for her Alma Mater Frostburg State University.

Last season, the Bobcats advanced to the conference final for the second year in a row. In 2009, Donovan helped the Bobcats post a school record 18 wins (18-4 overall record) and advance to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005.

During her four years as a player for Frostburg, she started all 83 games and helped the Bobcats post an incredible 55-20-8 overall record and a 33-2-1 mark in the AMCC. Donovan garnered All-Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference honors as both a sophomore and junior. She helped the Bobcats to an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2005 and three straight ECAC Tournaments in her final three years.

Donovan, who earned an NSCAA National Diploma coaching license in the summer of 2009, has worked Montgomery County day camps as well as Frostburg Soccer Camps for the last five years.

She earned her MBA from Frostburg State and resides in Adrian.

Ali Alamdari will enter his fourth season as the head coach of the Adrian College women’s soccer team in 2011.

2010 Season ReviewThe Lady Bulldogs had an 11-6-3 overall record and went

4-4 in the MIAA. Three players were selected for All-MIAA. Sam Barker earned First Team Honors, while Patti Vaassen and Lauren Cozzi were selected on the Second Team. Barker had a record-breaking season as a rookie as she set Adrian College single-season records for points, goals and shots. In addition, she already ranks eighth in AC history in points and goals. Adrian made it to the MIAA Semifinals.

2009 Season ReviewCoach Alamdari led the 2009 Bulldogs to a record of 11-6-

2, ending the season ranked #10 in the NSCAA DIII Central Region. Adrian finished the year as the MIAA Runner-Up, and saw four players honored with All-MIAA nominations, including NSCAA All-Central Region nominee Lindsay Chitwood who led the MIAA in scoring.

The 2009 Bulldogs were nationally ranked in several NCAA statistical categories. Out of over 425 DIII teams, Adrian ranked 10th in Team Save Percentage (0.889), 37th in Goals Against Average (0.662), and 54th in Shutout Percentage (0.526). The season saw several school records broken including Fewest Goals Against, Highest Win Percentage, and Highest MIAA Finish.

2008 Season ReviewIn his first season at Adrian in 2008, Alamdari took

the program to a new level as he coached the Bulldogs to a 10-6-3 overall record including the school’s first-ever berth in the MIAA Tournament Semifinals. The 10-win season was only the second double-digit win season in the last twenty years at AC.

Under the direction of Alamdari, Adrian placed two players on the All-MIAA Team in 2008.

The Bulldogs were also recognized as the 12th Most Improved Program nationally out of over 425 NCAA Division III women’s soccer programs.

Adrian Soccer HistoryAlamdari’s teams over the past three seasons have

compiled a record of 32-18-8 including a MIAA record of 14-10-2. When you place those numbers against the history of the program, it is truly a success story. From the beginning of the program in 1989 through 2007, the Bulldog women’s soccer program had just one winning season (12-7-1 in 2002) and had never finished above .500 in the MIAA standings. Alamdari is currently 2nd in career wins at AC, behind former head coach Rick Gutierrez who earned 32 wins with the Bulldogs from 1998 through 2005.

Away from AdrianBefore taking over as the head coach at Adrian, Alamdari

served as the assistant coach for the Albion College women’s soccer program and helped the team to a 25-7-6 record in two seasons. The team made a turnaround upon his arrival going 19-17-2 in the previous two campaigns.

Albion captured the 2007 MIAA Tournament and Alamdari mentored all goalkeepers including MIAA Player of the Year Caitlin Bowman.

During the summer, Alamdari has served on the camp staff at the University of Michigan since 2008. He also serves as the founder and director of the Adrian Soccer Academy which formed in the summer of 2009.

ADRIAN COLLEGE INFORMATIONADRIAN COLLEGE

Adrian College evolved from a theological institute founded by the Wesleyan Methodist denomination at Leoni, Michigan, a small town east of Jackson, in 1845. In 1855 this institute united with the Leoni Seminary, a Methodist Protestant institution, to establish Michigan Union College.

Legend states that members of the College became concerned about the environment at Leoni, which was nicknamed “Whiskey Town.” In 1859, this concern and other circumstances made it advisable to relocate or close. In the same year, Dr. Asa Mahan, pastor of the Plymouth Congregational Church in Adrian and a well-known educator, was encouraged by citizens of the community to establish a college. Mahan had served as the first president of Oberlin College and, before that, as an officer of Lane Theological Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Dr. Mahan and his colleagues invited the officials and supporters of the closing Michigan Union College to join in establishing the new college at Adrian. After the invitation was accepted, the story says, the library holdings were loaded on an ox-cart in March 1859, and transported 60 miles to the new campus site on the west side of Adrian.

On March 28, 1859, Adrian College was chartered by the Michigan legislature as a degree-granting institution with Dr. Mahan as its first president. Through a series of consolidations and denomination unifications, the College has maintained its relationship with The United Methodist Church.

For almost 100 years, the campus consisted of several brick buildings stretching along Madison Street. Most of today’s campus was woods and fields. In the mid-1950s, the College, encouraged by the generosity of Ray W. Herrick, embarked in a building program that established the basis for the current campus.

Today, when students walk in the area bounded on the east by Madison Street and edged by Downs Hall, Valade Hall, Cornelius House and Herrick Tower, they tread on the same ground that students hurried across in 1859 as they rushed to classes, meals and social events. Now, however, the campus consists of 100 acres, over 20 academic and service buildings and 10 residence halls, plus apartments and themed housing.

In its 2011 edition of America’s “Best Colleges,” U.S. News & World Report ranks Adrian College as one of the top five schools in the Midwest of Regional Colleges to have the least student debt load upon graduation.

This is the third consecutive year that Adrian College has been featured and singled out by U.S. News and World Report. In its 2009 edition of America’s “Best Colleges” and again in 2010, Adrian College received top billing as a school to watch and as the #1 Up-and-Coming School in the Midwest.

“Affordability is the top parental concern that parents express with respect to their child’s education,” said Adrian College President Jeffrey R. Docking. “We’re extremely pleased that U.S. News and World Report ranked us in the top five Midwest colleges that have students graduating with a lower debt.”
