Five Seniors Look to Lead Women’s Soccer in 2011

The 2011 Lindsey Wilson College women’s soccer season is all about the program showing that it has kept its place amont the na-tion’s elite in the NAIA. Last season, head coach Drew Burwash led the ladies to a 16-7 record and loss in the second round of the national championship. In 2011, Burwash sees this team much more prepared and capable to make a deeper run into the post-season. Included in the mix of re-turners are fi ve seniors who will all be called upon to lead the Blue Raiders on the fi eld. The group includes mid-fi elder Diana Da Rocha, midfi elder Elisha Fry, midfi elder Ida Gre-gersen, defender Heini Metsola and goalkeeper Jordan Morrison. Gregersen is the returning MSC Player of the Year and Fry is an all-conference selection. Mor-

rison is in her second year with the Blue Raiders after a transfer and Da Rocha logged time in 20 games last season, making nine starts.

Midfi elders/Forwards

The veteran leaders on the frontline for Lindsey Wilson will be Gregersen and junior Mia Persson. Gregersen fi nished 2010 with 10 goals and 10 assists, while Persson fi nished with eight goals and four assists. Another player poised for a breakout season is sophomore Elizabet Madjarac who never fully got into the offense as a freshman with just two goals scored, but looks to be a scoring leader for the Blue Raiders this season. Junior Saeda Sueki also re-turns on the attack for Lindsey Wil-son as a capable goal scorer, who like Madjarac, had a tough season in 2010 after a breakout year as a freshman. Newcomers Michelle Madsen and Laerke Lillelund Michaelsen are expected to contribute right away and challenge for time in the start-ing 11.

Defenders

Fry returns as the backbone of the defense, but will also be an

option on the attack as the senior fi nished with a team-high 12 goals last season. Adding to the experienced backline is Metsola, who has been a constant in the Blue Raider lineup

the past three seasons. Helping Fry and Metsola will be a trio of newcomers in Ayaki Shinada, Katarina Simic and Malin Sjoback. All three, like the new for-wards, will be called upon early in their careers and make some starts for Lindsey Wilson.

Goalkeepers

Morrison will start for the Blue Raiders in goal this season, coming off a junior campaign with fi ve shutouts and a .807 goals-against average. Adding depth will be fresh-man Esther Dam Simonsen.

Head CoachDrew Burwash

•Education Bishop Verot High ‘88 Lindsey Wilson College ‘94

Drew Burwash begins his ninth season as the Lindsey Wilson College women’s soccer head coach in 2011. Burwash has led Lindsey Wilson to the NAIA National Tournament in each of his eight seasons, including three of the last fi ve NAIA Final Fours. In those eight tournaments, the Blue Raiders have failed to reach the national semifi nals just three times. Burwash has led the Blue Raiders to three na-tional championship matches and to the program’s two NAIA National Championships. He is a two-time NAIA National Coach of the Year (2004 and 2006). In 2004, Burwash led the Blue Raiders to a 19-0-6 record -- the program’s only unbeaten sea-son -- and the program’s fi rst national champion-ship. He again led the Blue Raiders to a national championship in 2006 with a four overtime 2-1 win over Azusa Pacifi c University. Lindsey Wilson fi nished that season with a 24-2-0 record. Under Burwash’s direction, Lindsey Wilson women’s soccer has amassed a 157-24-12 record, including a 43-0-1 conference regular season re-cord. Burwash has coached 24 NAIA All-Americans, including one NAIA National Player of the Year. Six-ty-fi ve student-athletes have earned All Mid-South Conference honors during Burwash’s tenure, includ-ing seven MSC Players of the Year. In addition to the two national champion-ships, Burwash has led the Blue Raiders to eight Mid-South regular season and tournament champi-onships and three NAIA Region XI Championships. In his fi rst season at the helm of the women’s soccer program, the Blue Raiders scored a NAIA re-cord 162 goals during the season and won a pro-gram-best 20 consecutive games during the season while compiling a 25-2-0 record. Prior to taking over the women’s program,

Burwash served as an assistant coach for the wom-en’s team for one season and for the men’s program for fi ve seasons, where he helped the Blue Raider men win four NAIA National Championships. Prior to becoming a coach, Burwash was a standout goalkeeper at Lindsey Wilson, where he was a two-time NAIA All-American (1992-93). Burwash was a member of the 1992 Blue Raider squad that became the fi rst team in school history to qualify for the NAIA Men’s Soccer National Tournament. For his efforts during his playing days, Bur-wash was elected to the NAIA Hall of Fame in 2000 and the Lindsey Wilson College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004. Burwash graduated from Lindsey Wilson in 1994. He and his wife, Laura, has two sons, Eli and Ty.

Assistant CoachDebbie McGuinness

Debbie McGuinness begins her fi fth season in 2011 at Lindsey Wilson College as the head assistant women’s soccer coach and head junior varsity coach.

In her fi rst four seasons, McGuinness has helped lead the Blue Raiders to four Mid-South Conference regular season and tournament titles. Nationally, Lindsey Wilson has reached a pair of national semifi nals in four trips to the NAIA National Tournament.

McGuinness joined the Blue Raider women’s soccer staff following a stellar four-year career and a stint as the head girl’s soccer coach at Elizabethtown High School. While at Elizabethtown, McGuinness led her squad to the district title.

As a student-athlete, McGuinness helped Lindsey Wilson to the 2004 national championship where she was named the tournament’s most valuable player. McGuinness did not allow a goal during the 2004 postseason run, helping the Blue Raiders to the program’s fi rst national title.

McGuinness graduated from Lindsey Wilson in 2004.

The heartbreak of a loss in the NAIA National Tournament can make you forget the accomplishments of a regular season. But even though the Lindsey Wilson College women’s soccer team’s season ended earlier than it wanted, there was plenty of excitement throughout the year. For starters, there was the overall record of 16-7 that included winning the Mid-South Conference regular season and tournament championships. The Blue Raiders were a perfect 8-0 in conference play. There were also personal accolades such as Ida Gregersen, Patricia Nielsen, Mia Persson and Elisha Fry being named NAIA All-Americans at various levels.Gregersen was also named the MSC Women’s Soccer Player of the Year at the annual awards banquet held before the conference tournament. Eleven Lindsey Wil-son College student-athletes in all were honored at the event. Gregersen, Persson, Fry and Samantha Gutier-rez all earned fi rst-team all-conference honors, while Caitlin Burke, Hanna Jonsson and Heini Metsola were honorable-mention selections. Forty-six student-athletes were recognized as Academic All Mid-South Conference. The distinction is reserved for those with a sophomore or higher class standing and a 3.25 and above grade-point average on a 4.0 scale. Earning the academic honor from Lindsey Wilson were Rebecca Bjorkvall, Gregersen, Jonsson, Metsola, Jordan Morrison, Nielsen, Persson, Saeda Sueki and

Jennifer Tom. With all of those accomplishments throughout regular-season play, there were good moments in the postseason as well. The Blue Raiders cruised through the MSC Tournament with three straight shutout wins. Lindsey Wilson topped West Virginia Tech, Campbellsville (Ky.) University and Georgetown (Ky.) College by a combined score of 13-0 to win the championship. After bypassing Cornerstone University 3-0 in the fi rst round of the NAIA National Championship at Walter S. Reuling Stadium, the Blue Raiders couldn’t keep the momentum rolling in Decatur, Ala. Robert Morris (Ill.) College scored in the 16th minute and Lindsey Wilson never recovered, eventually losing the second-round match 2-0. Seventh-seeded Lindsey Wilson dominated the possession in the second half but could never fi nd the back of the net. The Blue Raiders out-shot the Eagles 12-0 after the break, but the Robert Morris keeper proved up to the task, stopping each of Lindsey Wilson’s shots on goal. Fry and Gregersen paced the team in scoring with 12 and 10 goals, respectively. Gregersen led the team in total points with 30 on 10 goals and 10 assists. The loss to Robert Morris also marked the end of four Blue Raider careers as seniors Burke, Katy Gilmour and Gutierrez and junior Tom all played their fi nal game for Lindsey Wilson.

On April 24, 1995, the presidents of member schools, meeting in Nashville, Tenn., formed the Mid-South Confer-ence to serve as the competitive base for their entire sports programs. The move effectively merged the athletic pursuits of similar institutions. The conference is unique in its broad based athletic competition for men and wom-en, offering championships in 18 sports.

The presidents of each school serves on the Board of Directors which directly oversees the conference and the of-fi ce of the commissioner. This administrative "hands on" role of each school's president is unique among athletic conferences and ensures a proper balance in the academic pursuits of student athletes.

True to its commitment to broad based athletic competition, the Mid-South Conference recognizes the value of extensive campus based sports programs that maximize the opportunities for athletic competition among their students.

Championships are awarded in the following sports:
