Theres unfinished business for the Park University womens soccer program in 2011. Penalty kicks, just 12 yards, separated Park from the 2010 NAIA Womens Soccer National Championship Opening Round, falling to McKendree University in PKs in the championship game of the AMC tour-nament after earning a draw in the game, finishing the year on a 10-game unbeaten streak (8-0-2) from Oct. 2 to Nov. 11. Parks 2011 returners say this season will be different. It was a horrible way to end the year, to be honest, Ashley Maxwell said. Max-well was the AMC Womens Soccer Player of the Year and an NAIA Honorable Men-tion All-American, but the end of her junior season has Maxwell, now a senior, moti-vated for 2011. You never want it to go to (penalty kicks) and you especially dont want to lose (on penalty kicks). The Pirates return 10 from last years American Midwest Conference regular-season co-championship squad, including three seniors Maxwell, Nori Gedei and Chelsie Shepard and nine of 11 starters from last years team.

Five juniors also return, including twins in the midfield, Dana and Nichole Hem-mingsen, a defensive anchor in Melanie Brewer, and a pair of juniors from Jamaica JVonelle Simpson and Juneille Wat-kins. Maxwell will anchor the teams offense, bringing 51 career goals and another 13 assists, playing on 64 of Parks 171 goals in the past three seasons. Maxwell led Park with 22 goals in 2011, followed by Watkins and Dana Hemmingsen, who each found the back of the net 13 times. Our returners have to be leaders, head coach Ken Hefner said. I have a lot of expectations of them. We have put a lot on their plate and we need to get results from it. We are strong. We have nine of our 11 starters returning from last year. We have a good group coming in, so we expect to excel at a high level and we have to make that happen from day one. The Pirates will have one key spot to fill right away in 2010, replacing Monika Stoiber, who was an on-and-off starter for Park in four seasons, from 2007 to 2010. Ellen Ghirardi, a returning letterwinner from 2010, will be the early on favorite for

time between the posts, and the Pirates signed a keeper, Alisha Hoskins, who comes to Parkville as a freshman from nearby Platte City and Platte County High School. We lost some really valuable players, including a goalkeeper, but our defense is still going to be really strong and our midfield is strong, said Shepard, who was named 2010 AMC Newcomer of the Year. Shepard is in her second year with the program, transferring from Johnson County Community College. I think we have really good chemistry on this team and everybody fits in really well. We have a real opportunity to be very good this year and Im ready for that challenge. Its excit-ing and Im looking forward to it a whole lot. Cara Lightle, a defender, joins Ghi-rardi to round out the sophomore class, and eight newcomers, including Hoskins, will join the program when camp breaks in early August for an 18-player roster. Every newcomer adds quality, Hef-ner said. Every one of them and at each position. We balanced this team with the newcomers, and theyre going to push the
