Design Services

Basic design services are included in the cost of the ad. In cases where advertisement requires excessive work, we charge a $35/hour fee for creative services. You will be notified before charges are applied.

Term Glossary

Active Area The area of the actual sheet of paper that can be used for printing content, both editorial and advertising. This area excludes a 0.5” margin and a 0.5” folio.

Campus Rate A rate for Santa Barbara City College departments, programs and clubs.

Column Inch A column inch is one inch in height by the width of one column. The Channels column inch is exactly 1.8677” wide by 1” high.

Insertion A space reserved for a specific advertisement.

National / Agency Rate A rate used by national advertising companies or agencies.

Open Rate A rate for personal, business, nonprofit or outside educational clients (non-agency).

Page Impression The exact number of times a specific Web page has been accessed or viewed by a single user.

Process Color (4-color) Process colors are reproduced by printing overlapping dots of cyan, magenta, yellow and black inks to simulate a large number of different colors. The use of process color (4-color) is determined by editorial content.

Reservation A verbal or emailed agreement to hold a space in The Channels for an advertisement.

Spot color A spot color is color used in addition to black. You can choose from among hundreds of spot-color inks to enhance a design. These colors are not a part of process colors (4-color).

Advertising InformationAD PLACEMENT

Advertising may be placed at The Channels newsroom, located at Campus Center-Room 123, Santa Barbara City College, Santa Barbara, CA 93109. Ads may be placed by mail by forwarding the ad and proper payment to this address. Advertising materials may be sent by fax to (805) 730-3079 (instructions, text or rough layouts only; fax quality does not allow logos, photos or layouts to be used in an ad). Ad information may be emailed to [email protected].

No advertising materials will be returned unless accompanied by specific instructions.

All advertising is subject to acceptance by The Channels, which reserves the right to reject copy at its sole discretion at any time prior to publication. The Channels will not knowingly publish advertisements that discriminate on the basis of race, color, sex, sexual orientation, religion, national origin, ancestry or physical or mental handicap.

The Channels will make all reasonable efforts to see that advertising is published as accepted. However, The Channels will not be responsible for any consequential damages resulting from failure to do so.

The advertiser and/or agency agrees to assume full and complete responsibility and liability for the content (including text representations, illustrations and copyrights) of any advertisements placed in The Channels.

Specific placement may be requested but is neither sold nor guaranteed.

RATES & CONTRACTSAdvertisers without contract will be charged

the open rate. A contract must be signed with The Channels to receive frequency or other special discounts. A frequency contract shall become effective only upon the approval of the Advertising Representative. If an advertiser fails to order instructions and furnish copy for space as agreed in the contract, the advertiser will be back-billed a “short rate” equal to the difference between the contract rate and the appropriate earned rate for the ads actually run.

ERRORS & ADJUSTMENTSThe advertiser must notify the Advertising

Representative of any error or omission within seven working days of the advertiser’s ad publication to be eligible for a makegood. The Channels’s

liability, if any, will not exceed the original cost of the incorrect advertisement. Credit will be given for the first incorrect insertion only. The original copy and instructions must be clear and legible. The Channels is not responsible for incorrect copy submitted by the client. Adjustments will be based on the percentage the error detracts from the effectiveness of the total advertising message, as determined by the Advertising Representative. Our liability does not extend to advertisements, which do not appear, or for errors in ads submitted after deadline or after proof has been approved.

DEADLINES AND CANCELLATIONSPrint & Online Advertisements: Ad insertion

and prepayment must be completed by 11 a.m. Wednesday, one week prior to the publication date. All advertising cancelled after deadline for publication is subject to a service charge up to 2/3 the cost of the ad.

Classified/Text Advertisements: Ad text, insertion and payment must be completed by 11 a.m. Wednesday, one week prior to publication. All ad changes and cancellations must be made before the advertising deadlines. No refunds will be offered after the first insertion deadline.

The Channels is responsible for the first incorrect ad insertion only. It is the advertiser’s responsibility to proofread the ad on the first day of publication. If an error should appear in the ad, the advertiser must notify The Channels by 11 a.m. Wednesday one week before the next publication in order to have the correction made. Minor typographical errors do not qualify for a refund.

PAYMENT TERMSAll advertising rates for the The Channels quoted

herein are net 30 days. New advertisers must PREPAY for the first two issues. All return print and online advertisers will be invoiced upon publication. Classified/Text advertisers will not be invoiced.

A current issue will act as proof of publication and will be sent with the invoice for payment. Payment is due upon receipt of the invoice. A monthly 1.5% service charge will be added to accounts 30 days delinquent. Accepted forms of payment are cash, check and Visa and MasterCard credit cards. A $10 fee will be charged for a returned check.

Classified ads placed through the mail should be addressed to “Classified.” Please include ad copy and payment in check or money order.

DESIGN SERVICESThe Channels production department provides

basic ad typesetting, layout and design at no extra charge.

In cases where advertisements require excessive work, the client will be charged creative charges. Proofs will be furnished upon request. Please allow two working days for receipt of your proof.

MECHANICS

• The Channels is a standard (tabloid) newspaper

and is printed by the offset process.

• For screens and halftones, a 70-line screen is

preferred. 85-line screen is acceptable.

• Reproduction proofs must be unmounted.

• Any extra cost incurred in the reproduction

or re-creation of advertising materials will be

charged to the client.

• Negatives must be right reading, emulsion side

down.

• Column width is 1.8677” (11p2.4 picas).

• Column height is 15.5” (plus 1/2” for folio).

• Full page: 5 columns x 15.5” equivalent to

80 column inches. 1/2 page: 40 column inches.

1/4 page: 20 column inches.

Ads must be supplied through one of the following formats:

• PDF files are preferred (no changes can be

made)

• EPS, TIFF files are acceptable

• Adobe Illustrator (All versions)

• Adobe InDesign (All versions)

• Adobe Photoshop (All versions)

ALL fonts, artwork and related items MUST be included.

We do not accept Microsoft Publisher formats. Any other Microsoft format will need to be converted and the client may be charged creative charges.

Ads submitted by email must be compressed as a StuffIt (any version), or Zip (any version).
