the athletic department mission at graceThe grace college athletic department exists for the purpose of glorifying god by helping make disciples of Jesus christ, devel-

oping competent athletic teams, and sharing the gospel message with the sport culture. The athletics program is an integral part of the educational mission of Grace College. Competition in athletics makes a significant contribution in the development of the total person and can be used effectively as part of the training program that prepares a person for service and leadership.

The Department of athletics endorses and supports the grace college “mission Statement” which states “grace college is an evangelical christian community of higher education which applies biblical values in strengthening character, sharpening competence, and preparing for service.”

2013 preView: grace spikers ready to take on the 2013 season

After amassing 56 wins and two national tournament appearances in the last two years, grace’s volleyball team is ready to continue their suc-cess in 2013. Grace may have just five upper-classmen on the roster, but the team’s returners boast a wealth of court ex-perience. The crossroads league will bring its usual competitive grind to the year, but sixth-year head coach andria Harshman believes grace can be in the mix for the league title. The lady lancers’ blend of return-ing talent, exciting newcomers and team unity should put grace in con-tention for the league’s top spot. “our goal is to be in the mix for the top of the conference in the regular season and tournament. We’ll vie for a position at the top, but we’ll have to battle daily to get there,” Harshman said. The team forged a close connection over grace’s preseason mission trip to costa rica in early august. according to Harshman the team will reap benefits both on and off the court from the trip. “Starting off the year in costa rica was a great way for the team to bond. We definitely meshed into a group that cares about each other off the court which will carry into the year,” Harsh-man said. “I’m really excited be-cause we have a bond that will be hard to break. They’re quieter off the court but very powerful and exciting on the court.” leading the lady lancers on the court in 2013 is senior mid-dle hitter Dana Johnston. The three-time all-league performer earned Second Team Nccaa all-american accolades in 2012

for her dominance at the net. She will be joined by sophomore alix Underwood (1.96 kills/set) and outside hitters calah Kruse and Han-nah clemmons. Kruse (honorable mention all-league) and clemmons (158 kills, 384 digs) have started since their freshman seasons. grace’s freshman class is promis-ing as well. megan Johnson and grace Woolsey provide athletic, 6-foot pres-ences at the net for the lady lanc-ers, and 6-foot setter Taylor baird and outside hitter Kaitlin Kerrigan hope to make an immediate contribution to the squad. Harshman anticipates a quicker version of the team this year on the court, and incoming setter ellie Harp is a major reason why. Harp, a junior transfer, is “poised, confident and knowledgeable,” according to Harsh-man. “our tempo is a little quicker now. We go at a pretty fast tempo. We are

very fast in the middle and outsides,” Harshman said. “If we can expose the middle on the other end, it will open up our offense.” The team’s increased speed will be evident on the defensive side of the net this year. annie Salazar leads a quick, experienced backline after she tallied 261 digs and 28 service aces last fall. but above all grace is hoping to continue its mission the team started in costa rica. “This team values com-munity service and mission service,” Harshman explained. “The girls have taken money out of their wallets in the midst of their college experiences, which says a lot about them. It’s excit-ing to see what they’ve learned and how they’ve grown already.” The lady lancers begin their sea-son at the michigan-Dearborn Tourna-ment on Aug. 23-24. Their first home match of the season is on Sept. 4 against crossroads league foe Taylor.

andria Harshman is set to begin her sixth season at the helm of the grace volleyball program.

Harshman has built Grace’s program into a national contender over the past five years. She took over a program that finished 3-15 in 2008 and has transformed the Lady Lanc-ers into a formidable opponent on the league and the national landscape.

Over the past two seasons, the Lady Lancers have amassed 56 wins and qualified for the Nccaa National championships in consecutive years.

During the course of grace’s 2011 season, Harshman navigated the team to a 12-match winning streak, the longest for the team since 1996. The lady lancers capped off their 2011 campaign with their first trip to the NCCAA National Championships in over a decade (2001). at the Nccaa Nationals, Harshman directed grace to the national semifinals where they fell in five sets.

Three seasons ago, the Lady Lancers enjoyed a breakout season with a 16-14 (9-7 CL) record, finishing third in the Cross-roads League and advancing to the semifinals of the league tournament. Their league finish was the program’s highest since 2001 and first above-.500 league record in four years.

During her collegiate career at Grace, Harshman was a member of both the volleyball and track and field teams. Through her four years as a player, the volleyball team won three crossroads league tournaments and three regular season champion-ships. In the 2001-02 season, the team was named NaIa region vIII champions and participated in the NaIa championships at Palm beach atlantic University.

Harshman also excelled on the track team and broke the school record in the hammer throw. She placed fourth at Nccaa Nationals in the hammer throw while placing third in the javelin. In 2002, she was named Female athlete of the year.

after graduation, Harshman was named the head volleyball coach at blackhawk christian High School in Fort Wayne, Ind. She coached at blackhawk from 2002-06, compiling a 71-40 record and winning three sectional titles. Harshman’s coaching journey would continue as she moved to orlando, Fla., where she took on the lyman High School greyhounds head coach-ing position. During her only season, the Greyhounds picked up their first victory at a tournament in Gainesville against some of the top ranked teams in the state.

after one year at lyman, the volunteer assistant coaching posi-tion opened up at Notre Dame with coach Debbie brown. While at Notre Dame, Harshman helped the program to a record of 15-13, finishing in the top of the big east in tournament play.

Harshman and her husband brian have two sons, gaige and Titus.

the facility: manahan orthopaedic capital center, est. 2007 The manahan orthopaedic capital center (mocc) is one of the new-est athletic facilities in the state of Indiana. It seats 2,200 spectators and is the home for grace volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball games.

The pristine facility was finished in 2007 in conjunction with biomet, DePuy, and Zimmer orthopaedic companies. It is highlighted by an im-maculate alumni suite overlooking Kessler court.

In 2009 the athletic department raised funds for a state-of-the-art volleyball team room in the mocc. In this room, the lady lancers watch game film, study their opponents, spend time in the Word and grow to-gether in christ.

Allyssa, We are so proud of you and all you have accomplished. You have grown so much spiritually at Grace and become a wonderful young woman! We can’t be-lieve it is your senior year and final year of volleyball! You never hit the 6 foot mark but became an amazing player and leader on the court and off. You have endured a lot of challenges in college trying to come back from 2 ACL surger-ies, but always remember that God has a plan for you whatever situation you are in and He will give you strength. Re-member why you love volleyball and en-joy this season!! Make memories and let God shine through you! Be the amazing player we know you are and use the tal-ents God has blessed you with! We love you so very much and are so proud of the beautiful person you are!!

Love, Mom and Dad

P. S. We may have to video more games this year so Mom doesn’t go into volleyball withdrawal next year!

Dana, We couldn’t be more proud of you. Four years have flown by too fast --- from First Team All-State in high school to First Team All-American at Grace. It’s been great fun traveling around the states to watch you play, but more importantly it’s been great to see God direct your path as you follow Him. We know He has great things in store for you. Enjoy your senior year and “Ball it up for our Lord!” Love ya, Mom and Dad XO P.S. BREAK IT!!!

The newly named crossroads league (cl), formerly the mid-central college conference, underwent a name and logo change in the summer of 2012, but its values remain the same. It is the purpose and function of the cl to promote inter-collegiate athletics in a well-rounded athletic program. The cl seeks to maintain high ideals and to promote sportsmanship and a friendly understanding among member colleges.

The manahan orthopaedic capital center is a marvelous facility. This state-of-the-art athletic venue is unrivaled in the conference. It is a clear example of local companies and higher education working in harmony to create a place for campus and the community at large. This is a great

example of the future for grace college and Kosciusko county.
