Finishing WellFor those who have grade school kids at home every fall brings an exciting restart

of sorts; new teachers, new classes, new school clothes, a new chance to learn, change, and grow. Over the last weeks, As kids and parents have looked toward the school year ahead, the new opportunities found in this restart also brings with it new fears. Will I like my new teacher? Will my friends be in my class? Can I do the work?

New, in the end, is always a mixed bag. New challenges. New fears. For most of us, grade school is in the rear-view mirror. Its challenges and fears

seem small in hindsight. But in third grade or sixth or tenth they seemed anything but small. However, we faced them and we grew, becoming something new in the process. In fact, I think one of the greatest lessons we learned in our many new restarts of grade school is how to take the mixed bag of challenges and fears and recognize the incredible opportunity that is found there.

This fall there will be a new restart for Shepherd of the Hills and for the Coulters. As Kim and I say good bye to this place we love, we have many new opportunities and challenges ahead, and with it comes many new fears, a mixed bag. And Shepherd of the Hills will face the same mixed bag.

We don’t face it alone. You see, Jesus taught his disciples a lot about restarts. New life, new hope and new opportunities were the stuff of Jesus’ teaching. But he didn’t forget about the fear. He taught about that also. In boats and on dry land, in large crowds and alone, Jesus acknowledged his followers’ fear...then turned it into an opportunity for faith. How? By teaching them not to focus on their fear but instead focusing on Him, the author and perfecter of our faith.

It is a lesson I need to take to heart this fall and I hope you will also. We can trust that God will take the restart before us, including the fears and challenges, and turn it into an incredible opportunity for growth. That’s what God does. I trust that’s what God will do.

A World Apart, Bound by the Love of Christby Madi Lee

Dear Shepherd of the Hills, Thank you so much for

sending me to Guatemala this summer. It was an incredible, life-changing trip that not only shifted my world-view, but grew and shaped my faith.

I spent nine days total in Guatemala, but the four days I spent in the small rural village of El Tizate was by far the most fun and most transformative experience of the trip. The Installation team, which I was a part of, traveled up an insanely high mountain to reach El Tizate install a water purification system for the people there. I was on the education side of the Installation team, teaching leaders of the community and later children how the system works, and how and when to use the clean water it will provide.

Mornings were spent with the community leaders. We first taught them the information, so that in the afternoon, when other community members came (largely children and adolescents) the information would be coming from people they trusted. I loved watching their faces animate as the community

leaders led activities and taught lessons pertaining to the water. Before I arrived, I was not sure what to expect from the villagers. Would the young girls be literate? Would the people have to work instead of attending the lessons? Would there be any female community leaders?

I was amazed by the resourcefulness and the brightness of not only the community leaders, but of the young people there. Although their native language of Mam had been heavily oppressed over the years, the people of El Tizate spoke it proudly, and easily translated from Spanish to Mam, two very different languages. The young girls and boys were shy, but incredibly kind, and curious about English, America, pure water, germs, any information we could give them. They were even more exited when we showed an interest in learning Mam.

I tried to see from their perspective: privileged Americans expressing desire to learn a language and culture oppressed for centuries, all in an effort to grow in friendship. I wished to show the people there what was just beginning to learn: the

purpose of these mission trips is not simply to help the less fortunate, but to answer God’s call to do his work, and to develop real relationships with his beloved children.

Throughout the trip, Pastor Mike reminded us to try not to see everything through “Guilty American Eyes” and instead just see the people as people. This was very difficult in the beginning, because the poverty is so omnipresent it seems to overwhelm you. But as I began to learn with the people of El Tizate, began to praise God with them, I realized these people had experienced and were experiencing God’s love, just like I do each day. They love the same God I do, and we truly are all His children, we truly are hermanoes and hermanas in Christ.

I will never forget my time in Guatemala, it was and is the most amazing time in my life. Thank you, to all the members of Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church, for your continued support of mission. I now understand how important it truly is, and cannot wait until I get to go again.

Lessons from Guatemalaby Courtney Wilkinson

First, I would like to thank Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church for allowing me to go on the 2014 Guatemala mission trip. I feel so blessed to know that I was able to go on my very first mission trip with such great people with strong faiths.

Arriving in Guatemala, I was very nervous. I had never been out of the country, and as we approached the airport for landing, I could already see the poverty from the window of the airplane. I began to feel a little nervous about this because I didn’t know what to think about it. I worried about what I would eat and if I would be okay here, and in those first moments in Guatemala, I felt the homesickness I had worried I would feel. I started to feel uncomfortable, and I thought that the trip was going to be a hard experience for me.

Boy, did I have little faith. Didn’t Jesus say to Peter, “Why

is your faith so little?” as he was making his way onto the water, moving toward Jesus, at first walking, then almost sinking? I didn’t have enough faith in Jesus the moment I came to Guatemala, just like Peter as he worried he would sink.

So, to my amazement, this trip helped me really connect with my faith and truly learn that I must be

patient. God is patient. God was always with me, and when I put my faith in him, anything was possible. In Guatemala, I learned that even if you think that your morning is starting out hard, I could ask God and pray for the patience he needed me to have.

Through this prayer, I saw some of the most beautiful moments throughout the trip. I got to see the church in El Tizate partner with SHPC to begin bringing sanitized water to their community. We came to stand beside them and help them when they needed us. We helped guide them and teach them. I got to see people from the church watch us cut a piece of PVC pipe, then eagerly want to learn how to do it and finish the job themselves. They have so many beautiful goals for their people, just like we would here at the church for ours.

I also got to see children in Guatemala that were so grateful for a bottle of bubbles. They all surrounded us so that they could jump up and pop them. The atmosphere of the church with the education team, install team, the Guatemalan kids, the church, and the enormous amounts of bubbles in the air was absolutely a God-sight. In that moment, I felt God so strongly. I felt his love.

I cannot thank God enough for guiding me to be a part of the install team in El Tizate. I got to be a part of building the clean water system, and I got to see all of the workers from SHPC and the church in El Tizate work together, learning both Spanish and English, to make this system work.

By the end of the trip, I did not see Guatemala as a poor country that could make me really sick if I ate something I shouldn’t have. Instead, I saw it as one of the most beautiful countries I have ever been in with some of the most caring and curious people I have ever met—some of the hardest working people I have ever met. I realized that Guatemala was a home to me, a place where I got to serve like Jesus did.

Again, I would like to thank God and the church for this amazing experience. I made so many new friends who share a strong faith, and who I would love to be friends with forever. It’s strange for me to think that I was so homesick the first day leaving the U.S., and as I left Guatemala, I had tears in my eyes. I am thankful for that, and I hope and pray that this trip stays with me forever and that the power of God I felt in those moments will help me keep growing in my faith.

One Kid, One Church, One HourHow much time does it take to change the course

of a child’s life? If you are in a mentoring relationship with an at-risk child, it can be as little as one hour a week. Through Kids Hope International, SHPC is entering its third year of partnership with Williams Elementary, a school in south Austin with a high number of at-risk children. These are children who need a loving, faithful adult to spend one hour a week letting them know that they matter. This hour is spent reading, playing games, talking, or playing outside. These children can be forever impacted by the knowledge that an adult cares enough to spend time with them each week, and the reading level improvement can have a significant effect on dropout rates in high school.

We require more mentors to meet the needs of the children, and we’d love to have you! Please call Karen Johnson at 512-698-9183 or email kljaustin@

gmail.com for more information about mentoring. Mentor training is scheduled for Saturday, September 6 from 9am-noon and additional training dates will be added as needed. We are also seeking volunteers for gardening, coordinating a couple of parties at the school, and helping with the Easter Egg Adoption.

In a recent sermon, Larry spoke of the importance of moving outside our normally-traveled geographic and socioeconomic boundaries. Perhaps, as for him, this could be accomplished by mentoring a child through our Kids Hope program.

THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS!On behalf of Manos de

Cristo and those we serve, THANK YOU SO MUCH for all of your hard work today! We could not have had such a smooth program today

if it wasn’t for your take charge attitudes, team work and positivity! 200 children are now ready for school and you helped make that happen.

CHILDREN & FAMILIESPlaying for Keeps in Children’s Ministry

In our Children’s Ministry (also known as @shpckids), we believe that parents are the greatest influence in their children’s lives. However, we recognize that parenting is hard work…and parenting a child as he/she develops a forever faith can be daunting. That’s why we do what we do: because we don’t think parents should have to go it alone!

We build teams of committed leaders who speak into the lives of the children in their small groups. We celebrate the WINS of parenthood as parents and caregivers share success stories with us. We believe that a LEGACY is not what you leave FOR someone, but what you leave WITHIN someone.

That’s why this year, we’re exploring the 6 things every kid needs over time, and what it takes to make what really matters matter more. What does that mean?

FUN over TIME makes a FRIENDSHIP go deeper.WORDS over TIME provide DIRECTION in someone’s lifeSTORIES over TIME build an IMAGINATIONTIME over TIME creates a HISTORY worth repeatingTRIBES over TIME show us how we BELONGLOVE over TIME is WHAT MATTERS MOSTThis year, we’re Playing for Keeps. Want to join this dynamic team?

We are currently looking for:• Room Hosts—these folks give us

40 minutes/Sunday to support our small group leaders, welcome families, and place new children in the appropriate small groups

• Environmental Engineers—these folks dream, design and build our

sets for our Large Group and Big Story LIVE! stage productions. They also help organize our kid spaces.

• Box Elves—these very “behind-the-scenes” individuals give us one hour a week to build our supply boxes for our Sunday morning small group leaders. This can be done over coffee with a friend, or by yourself with your favorite music playing!

Contact Chris ([email protected]) to share your gifts!

Pastoral Sabbatical UpdateWhen Session offered last year to grant me a 3-month sabbatical

in 2014, I never dreamed what an amazing gift it would be to me and my family! But, oh, how it has been!

My instructions were to use one month doing something that would benefit the church, one month doing something that would benefit my family, and one month doing something that would benefit me (i.e., something I’ve always wanted to do but just haven’t managed to check off the list quite yet).

So…. I put together the following agenda:

First month /for church Attend the Festival of Homiletics in Minneapolis, Minnesota (a

week-long preaching event where approximately 1800 pastors and church leaders gather to hear and discuss sermons and lectures from dawn to dusk each day). Afterwards, I spent time reading, reading, reading... and focusing on the meaning and importance of Sabbath, especially in today’s non-stop culture. And… I slept. (You may not think this benefits the church, but believe me, it does!) 😄

Second month / for family Honestly, to be given an entire month to play with my family,

make unforgettable memories together and have absolutely no schedule of have-to-do’s is more than this gal could ever imagine! So, Glenn and I worked some magic with our timeshare points and took the kids to Hawaii for four weeks. We spent the first two in Princeville, Kauai, where we enjoyed lots of hiking, biking and beautiful beaches. We then moved to Maui for two more weeks of fun and hammock time. There, a few of our favorite things included sunset sails, sand between our toes and our first submarine ride. Truly it was one of the best times of my entire life. My heart is full just thinking about it!

Third month/ for meMany of you know that before I began ministry, my first career

was in fashion journalism and advertising. One of my favorite designers from those long-ago years is no longer designing clothing, but now leads art retreats instead. Her next one takes place in Provence, France, in mid-September, and my mom and I are scheduled to attend! Basically, we will awake each day to a schedule of walking in lavender fields, enjoying petit dejeuner, painting with Sigrid for a few hours, then exploring the surrounding countryside and villages together! We’ll also have a couple of days when traveling to and from Marseille airport to explore the Cote d’Azur. In all, I’ll be gone about 12 days. Since this is during the final weeks of Pastor Larry’s time with us, I do not plan to be away for the entire month. I prefer instead to spend as much time as possible working with him, staff and session to ensure a smooth transition after his departure. Just know that I’ll return on Sunday, September 28th, which is when I’ll be back to my regular hours and schedule for the long-term!

I cannot thank this congregation enough for taking seriously the importance of sabbaticals for its pastors— I have love-love-loved every single minute!

Blessings,Britta

NEW STUDY FOR WOMEN“Lord Change My Attitude”

What does God think about attitudes? This study uses examples from the Israelites' journey out of Egypt to show how attitudes can affect whether someone stays in the wilderness or enjoys the blessings of the Promised Land. Take a look at examples of good and bad attitudes from both Testaments and how those apply to today's world. From complaining to thankfulness, from being critical to being loving, from coveting to contentment – there is hope for the attitudinally challenged.

The class will be Tuesday mornings from 9:30-11:30 in Portable B. It will begin on Sept. 2 and finish on Nov. 18, skipping Nov. 4 for IHN week. Contact Nancy Herlin at [email protected] to sign up.

Austin City Council District 8 Public Candidate Forum

Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church will host an Austin City Council District 8 candidate forum on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Wm Cannon campus sanctuary, 5226 West Wm Cannon Drive, which is only a few blocks from the population and geographic centers of the district. The event is open to the public.

The city council election on November 4, 2014 will be historic for several reasons: Most importantly, ten council members will be elected from single-member districts rather than at-large. Thus, each council member will represent a geographic district rather than the whole city, which increases fairness in representation and accountability of the elected representatives. The mayor will continue to be elected at-large. Second, the elections will be in November rather than in May, coinciding with numerous statewide executive and judicial contests, as well as judicial district, legislative and county electoral contests. Consequently, higher voter turnout rates are expected. Third, council members will serve staggered four-year terms rather than three-year terms. Since this is the first election using single-member districts, all ten council members will be elected. Finally, under the new system, the council members will be more dispersed geographically. In the past, most council members resided in a relatively small geographic area of the city, primarily west of MOPAC and north of Lady Bird Lake.

The candidates vying to represent District 8 are Rebecca Bray, Eliza May, Darrell Pierce, Ed Scruggs, and Ellen Troxclair. Covering most of Southwest Austin, District 8 contains more than 77,600 residents.

Attend the forum to meet the candidates, to hear about their visions for Southwest Austin, and to ask them about the municipal issues that concern you and your neighbors.

Interested in joining? There are no quotas, no deadlines; the only requirement is that as you work on your project, you pray for comfort and peace for the person who will eventually receive your finished project.

All skill levels are welcome and if you’d like to learn to knit or crochet and be part of this ministry we’ll be happy to teach you the skills you need.

Mary Martha Circle Returns!

Join your Circle friends for our first meeting of the fall September 4th at 10 a.m. in room 9 on the William Cannon campus.

Association of Retired Christian MenThe Association of Retired Christian Men (ARCM) meets each Thursday

morning at 10:00 a.m. in the William Cannon church library for coffee, fellowship, and a Biblically based devotional. Our meetings adjourn at 11:30 a.m.

While this is primarily a men’s group, all are invited. We are fortunate to have more than Presbyterians at some of our meetings. They bring a broadening experience as we discuss our Christianity, focused on the risen Lord.

At present, we are working our way through the book of Acts and plan to continue this study until we reach the holiday season. Acts is a great book in the Holy Bible, enabling us to trace Christianity as it blossomed from the Resurrection of Jesus Christ through the early years of church formation. Hardship and peril were overcome by apostles and disciples going forth into the world as commanded by Jesus. Matthew 28:19 is always a good place to be reminded of the direction Christ gave us.

Come and join us! We are an easy-going group. Jesus said, “My yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:30

You may contact our facilitator, Ron Miller, at 512-892-1862 or [email protected] for additional information.
