From the EditorWELCOME TO THE NEW SHEPHERD’S WATCHChanges, changes, changes. I know it seems like we’ve had a never-

ending string of changes, but I genuinely think you’ll like this one.

Has it seemed to you that The Shepherd’s Watch has become simply a longer version of the month’s Yellow Pages blurbs? For some time now, it’s felt like that to me; with the monthly newsletter deadline an absolute grind for staff and ministry leads who have time to submit few articles of interest while they scramble to make sure they have each event covered, that the newsletter version of their event blurb is actually different than the Yellow Pages blurb, and that they don’t altogether miss the monthly deadline for newsletter articles while they’re actually doing things (gasp!) like planning and executing events, leading groups, facilitating classes and doing ministry.

The result has been more stress for those submitting articles and ads, and less depth in what we read in The Shepherd’s Watch.

After considering the purpose we’d really like our newsletter to serve, we made the decision to switch formats, offer the newsletter quarterly rather than monthly, and ask ministry leads for more articles of interest and short, simple announcements of upcoming events.

The new format will challenge us to produce a publication that reflects the spiritual depth we’re seeing together as a congregation. I hope you

will find articles that inspire you and information that gets you moving to serve, join, learn and grow in new ways at SHPC.

One additional feature we’ve gained by publishing less often is one I’m sure you’ve already noticed—color! It’s a small change, but breathes a little new life into our beloved Shepherd’s Watch.

So what about the event announcements? You’ll still find important information about what’s happening at SHPC; the presentation of this information will simply be a little different. Look for “ad pages” and side-columns with lists of dates, times and organizers’ contact information. Weekly Yellow Pages annoucements will continue to be a great source of information on all church activity.

I’d love to hear what you think about the new format of The Shepherd’s Watch. If you have feedback, please send it to [email protected].

Blessings,

Mary AversaSHPC Business Manager & Communications Director

Life In The FlockA NEW CHAPTERby Rev. Jim Capps

The Psalmist writes in Psalm 98:1- “Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things; his right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him.”

While not wanting to mix metaphors, it is with the same kind of worshipful awe that we at Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church, led by the Holy Spirit, are writing a new chapter in the life and history of this church.

The last chapter has included the difficult “good-byes” to faithful servants in leadership like Larry Coulter, Belva Koerth, Zach Uzzle and Ted Thulin. Our Session, seeking to be faithful to our awesome Creator God, has made the difficult decisions of beginning the process of selling our 67-acre property on 290 and to not renew the lease for our Brodie campus. They are committed to a balanced financial budget for 2016.

This new chapter has the title of, “Going Deeper Together.” As we move into a future filled with unknowns, it is crucial for us to join together in what we know is God’s purpose for us—to go deeper spiritually in our relationship with God. As that spiritual growth takes place, we cannot help but become more fruitful disciples as we serve one another and the world outside of our walls.

That new chapter includes a new format for this newsletter which will come out quarterly hoping to be more impactful as we share stories of what God is doing in and through us in our world.

Early in this new chapter a Mission Study Report will be completed. It will chronicle our rich history; speak of the demographics of our church family and the community in which we live, share our present ministry as well as our vision for

the future, and give a snapshot of what we are looking for in our next pastor.

This exciting new chapter will include the election of a Pastoral Nominating Committee which will search for the next Senior Pastor for SHPC. What a great day that will be when God leads the PNC as well as the Pastor to be nominated as your next shepherd of the flock. Start praying right now for those who will serve on the PNC as well as the pastor whom God will call.

Even though SHPC offers some very real challenges, if we are faithful in going deeper together, I believe that we will have several pastors who want to be alongside of us in ministry in this new chapter of our life together.

May God bless you and make you a blessing.

Dear Ted, Tara, Kyle, Peyton, and Holly,

You took a risk. You heard God’s call, you knew the journey would be risky, and you came anyway. Perhaps 3 years ago, you thought (like so many of us so often do) that if you followed the call, God would make the path an easy one for you?

No. I don’t suppose so. I suppose you simply know in your hearts that the worthwhile—the life-changing—journeys always include some measure of struggle.

We did a little bit of that...struggle. There were adjustments, surprises, “settling” periods. There were long days and long weeks and a lot of hard work.

The gifts of this journey, however...well...where do we even begin? We’ve become more than a worshiping community at Brodie, we’ve become a family. We had a baby boom right out of the starting gates. Nine babies born and baptized! We handed out first Bibles in UpStreet, sniffled as graduates waved goodbye. We’ve seen some of our “All In” families take their own leaps of faith as they moved on to other cities.

And we’ve been present as God has moved in the hearts of some who never considered a relationship with Christ before. Is there any gift greater than witnessing our Heavenly Father expand our family in such a way?

And just three years later Thulins, you’ve leapt again, following God’s call to the next leg of your journey. Such courage! None of us knows what the struggles will be—not for you as you discern God’s next step for your family or for us as we make an unexpected transition—we only know that they will come.

Just know this: we’ll pray for you together and lift you up every step of the way. We’re family, after all. It’s what we do.

Life In The FlockMarried People: Get Your WITH Back!by Britta Dukes

Here’s a question for all you couples. How’s your WITH right now?

Is it healthy and happy…or has your WITH gotten a little wonky?

A good way to gauge the state of your WITH is to think back to the days when you first met your honey and knew you wanted to woo (and be wooed by) them.

Remember those days before you first got married, when you were always WITH each other…on campus, on a date, on the phone?! Everything you did, you did WITH each other. In fact, you loved being WITH each other sooooo much that you decided to get married so you could be WITH each other forever.

However, if you’re like most couples, it probably wasn’t too long after you returned from your honeymoon that your WITH time got shorter and shorter and shorter, because life got more and more and more busy.

If we’re being honest, it’s really easy for our WITH to get wonky, but the good news is, it doesn’t have to stay wonky! As a couple, all you have to do is stand up and refuse to let your WITH wither by declaring: “Oh no, not us—we’re taking back our WITH!”

We’re going to learn to have fun WITH, feel WITH, switch WITH and be a great WITH, even when we’re not WITH our spouse. And perhaps the weirdest and most unexpected thing about getting our WITH back is that it’s the church that's going to help us do it!

SHPC is excited to announce the launching of a brand new ministry called MarriedPeople, which is a strategy to help couples enjoy thriving marriages. MarriedPeople is the newest addition to Orange, which is the strategy we’ve been implementing in our children’s and youth ministry for about the last decade.

The Orange strategy strives to help church and family work together to combine the influences each has on a child’s faith life, and in doing so, to make a greater, more lasting impact. One of the basic principles of the Orange strategy is to imagine the end. In other words, if we’re impacting the next generation, then part of what these future adults need modeled for them is examples of what healthy relationships look like. And one of the ways we can ensure they have these examples is by creating a culture of healthy, connected couples in our SHPC community.

One of the goals of the MarriedPeople strategy is to be a proactive resource, rather than a reactive one, so during a one-year cycle, the

following is offered:

• 4 large group experiences (quarterly one-night events centered around having fun and connecting with other couples): October 2, November 20, February 12 & May 21

• 4 date nights (for individual couples to have alone time, with child care offered at the church): October 15, December 17, April 1 & June 11

• 1 five-session small group study (an opportunity for those not already involved in small groups to give it a try): mid-January start

• 12 MarriedPeople EZINEs (a monthly email that couples may subscribe to at no charge)

A total of 25 touchpoints are available throughout the year, but a couple doesn’t have to opt in to everything being offered. You can pick and choose as you see fit, and hopefully, in the process, your WITH will get stronger and you’ll have a really good time in the process!

If you have questions about the strategy, want to learn more, or are interested in being a part of leadership for this ministry, please contact Pastor Britta at: [email protected].

We All Have a Responseby Mike Killeen

I’ve been watching Jesus a lot closer than I ever have before. I do not know why I am suddenly re-facinated with my Savior but I am taking a second look and learning a lot. One of the things that I have noticed is that wherever Jesus went, he drew a crowd. But the crowd that gathered around him were not always supporters. Often when Jesus taught, people were moved, lives changed. Some might even be healed. Others were awed that he spoke with power and authority. As a preacher and teacher, I have spent years speaking on how people have responded to the messages and mere presence of Jesus the Christ.

What I have learned by reading scripture and living life is that everyone has a response to Jesus and not everyone’s response is positive. In fact, in almost every crowd, when Jesus spoke there were always people who responded in the negative. Some religious types were even offended at the messages that Jesus brought and the sinless life he lived. So offended and disagreeable was his message that the temple of his day openly plotted and successfully had Jesus put to death.

So as a fellow follower of Jesus I want you to be encouraged to know that even Jesus did not reach everyone with a message they all could agree on. There will always be people who say that Jesus is not for them. As I continue to read about Jesus, I am encouraged that he affected people deeply in some way. Their response was to either write him off or to follow him, to be offended by his presence or to allow his presence to shape and save.

I am reminded of Zaccheaus, another character in scripture that the crowd had problems with. Zaccheaus. The short, cheating, tree-climbing Jew who was also in bed with the Roman government as a chief tax collector. He probably had a whole team of tax collectors working for him and others under him. He was the president of a major tax collecting firm. If he was alive today he would have his own reality tax collecting show. The problem was, he was a dirty tax collector. (Is there any other kind?) He was so dirty that people who were following Jesus called Zaccheaus a “sinner,” which, at the time, was like cursing at someone. The crowd wanted Jesus to become a religious cop in the face of this sinner. The people wanted Jesus to bring justice on this cheating, disloyal tax collector but Jesus does something entirely different and he makes his followers and the people of the town upset. Jesus’ actions even offend the most religious people in the town.

He calls Zaccheaus down from the tree by name and invites himself over for dinner. We do not know what happened or what was said during the four hour dinner, but we do know it invoked in Zaccheaus a real response to Jesus. After simply being in the presence of Jesus, his life was changed forever. He repented and repaid all those he cheated up to 4x the amount he had stolen.

I want to encourage you to bring people into the presence of Jesus while you are at work, while you are walking in your neighborhood and while you are in your school. I believe that you bring people not the presence of Jesus by being aware that wherever you go Jesus is with you. Start letting people know that you follow Jesus. Some will respond by being offended like the religious officials, and others will respond just like Zaccheaus. I think it is worth the risk. Do not forget that he commanded you to go out and make disciples. So if you responded positively to Jesus your job is pretty simple. 1. Love and follow him. 2. Help others to love and follow him by bring them into his presence.

Life In The FlockService as a Pathway to Spiritual Growthby Mary Aversa

When you think about growing deeper in your faith, you likely consider some sort of action you can take to pursue spiritual depth. Read more scripture. Join a study...and a LifeGroup. Share your faith story with friends and family. Pray every day.

These are absolutely actions that move you in the right direction. But have you considered service as a pathway to growing deeper in your faith? If you haven’t, here’s a maybe-surprising fact. Service, both within the church and in mission as an agent of the church, are very important catalysts for spiritual growth. In fact, studies show that one of the most important thing a church can do to foster spiritual growth in its members is offer opportunities for members to serve in and through the church.

In the Mission section of this newsletter, you will read about mission opportunities this fall. Below are a number of areas where we currently need volunteers in the church. Please prayerfully consider serving in one of the areas below, and contact the lead person listed here if you have questions about what is involved.

Onto the Next Adventure...By now, you all know of Pastor Ted Thulin’s leaving, but many of you have also

been asking about Josh Coulter—what’s next for him and Natalie?

What you may not know is that this fall, we were going to be saying good-bye to Josh, regardless of the status of the Brodie campus. Josh had originally committed to being our Worship Leader until last May, then a little sweet-talking and arm-twisting convinced him to stay on until fall. (Or maybe he and Natalie were just having such a wonderful time, they didn’t need any convincing to stay a few more months!)

Josh and Natalie are making a few changes with Josh’s day job and Natalie’s flourishing business (the fabulous Mint & Maple Designs). They also have a new little one at home. (...of the four-legged variety, that is.) This is an exciting time for them!

We have been tremendously blessed by their music and ministry at both campuses, but our Brodie family has been especially fortunate to have worshiped with them for the past two years.

We know that their next adventure will be an exciting one, and we wish them all the best.

Josh and Natalie, thank you for sharing your talents with us. It has been an honor growing in faith with you!

One Child, One Hour, One Church, One SchoolKids Hope changes lives, one child, one hour at a time.by Karen Johnson

How much time does it take to change the course of a child’s life? If you are in a mentoring relationship with an at-risk child, it can be as little as one hour a week.

Through Kids Hope USA, SHPC is entering its fourth year of partnership with Williams Elementary, a school in south Austin with a high number of at-risk children. These are children who need a loving, faithful adult to spend one hour a week letting them know that they matter. This hour is spent reading, playing games, talking, or playing outside. These children can be forever impacted by the knowledge that an adult cares enough to spend time with them each week, and the reading level improvement can have a significant effect on dropout rates in high school.

Read more about Kids Hope from a current mentor and the principal of Williams Elementary:

“This was our first year working together. Through studying and playing games (lots of games!) we laughed and learned to trust each other. Lunch was a special time to talk and read books about silly animals. There was nothing more rewarding this year than being able to help my child have small successes and celebrate her achievements!” Lisa Crawford, Kids Hope mentor

“The Kid’s Hope Mentors…are making a difference in our students’ lives. Their involvement has social, emotional, and intellectual benefits which impact our students.” Joan Bertino, principal of Williams Elementary

MISSION

Kids Hope needs more mentors to meet the needs of the children, and we’d love to have you! We provide the training; you bring a desire to have fun, be a friend and make a difference. We are also seeking volunteers for gardening, coordinating a couple of parties at the school, and helping with the Easter Egg Adoption. Join us!

Please call Karen Johnson at 512-698-9183 or email [email protected] for more information about mentoring.

MissionGuatemala Missions 2015By Carlen & Beaman Floyd

From the southern coast of Guatemala to more remote mountainous jungle villages, SHPC missioners served in a variety of projects during one week at the end of July. A team of 21 arrived in Guatemala City before dividing into three teams that went out to perform different services. Guided by Christ’s admonition that serving “the least of these” is service to Christ himself, the teams aimed to provide for the health and well-being of several diverse populations throughout the country.

Our Living Waters installation team visited the medical clinic of Dr. Erik Estrada, who has previously visited SHPC. The Team installed a new water purification system and provided education to clinic staff on the technical/medical aspects of clean water, as well as the uses of the purified water. One highlight of the week was their celebration of Sunday services. The Team continued on to Hogar Miguel Magone to perform maintenance on the existing water system and evaluate a nearby school as a potential site for a water system. The final visit was at the San Bartolome School in San Andres Itzapa where additional maintenance was performed. One of our team members discussed the use and availability of computer-guided educational material at each of our three stops, with an emphasis on Spanish to English and Spanish computer training.

Another Living Waters team continued our three-year covenants with previous installation sites, as well as researching potential sites for new installations. They visited with local leaders to discuss problems that may have developed since the initial installation of the

water systems, and subsequently worked to address any complications.

The final group returned to Hogar Miguel Magone to work with the children at the home and to do various construction projects. During the days, some members were tasked with demolishing the old boys’ bathroom & showers – and removing the subsequent rubble. Another group, assisted by two local foremen, built a stone pavement outside the music building – which entailed

manual cement mixing and skilled rock selection and placement. Other group members achieved something that has been sorely needed for years. Using w o o d w o r k i n g skills, they stabilized more than 20 benches

in the chapel and tables in the dining room (which allows for quieter worship and gatherings!). Every evening, the group led 75-90 kids in Bible stories, arts and crafts, and singing.

At the end of the week, the groups reunited in Antigua for a thoughtful debriefing of our experiences. We learned much about ourselves, and about our Guatemalan brothers and sisters. We celebrated our similarities as well as our differences—spiritually, emotionally, physically. Once again, SHPC has been the hands and feet of Christ, working to fulfill Christ’s commission to love our neighbors as ourselves, and to carry the Good News into the world. As always, this was a full-church effort, supported by the full congregation and the mission budget. We look forward to keeping covenant with Guatemala.

Social Actionby Rabbi Jack Riemer

We cannot merely pray to You, O God, to end war:For we know that you made the world in a way

That we must find our own path of peaceWithin ourselves and with our neighbor.

We cannot merely pray to you, O God, to root out prejudice:

For You have already given us eyesWith which to see the good in all people

If we would only use them rightly.

We cannot merely pray to you, O God, to end starvation:For you have already given us the resources

With which to feed the entire worldIf we would only use them wisely.

We cannot merely pray to you, O God, to end despair:For you have already given us the power

To clear away slums and to give hopeIf we would only use our power justly.

We cannot merely pray to you, O God, to end disease:For you have already given us great minds

With which to research our cures and healingIf we would only use them constructively.

Therefore, we pray to you, O God,For strength, determination, and will power,

To do instead of just to prayTo become instead of merely to wish.

Children & FamiliesIt’s Just a Phase…So Don’t Miss It!by Chris Gordon

On an airplane recently, I was sitting across the aisle from a young Momma with her 2 year-old in the seat next to her. We were scheduled for a 3-hour flight, and I could tell she was anxious about traveling with her young one for such a long stretch. The looks from the overly annoyed businessman behind me weren’t helping much, so I tried to smile across the aisle to show solidarity with her and to let her know that “we” weren’t so bad on the left side of the plane.

Take off and the first 30 minutes of the flight were delightful. Beverages were doled out, seats were leaned back and tray tables were full. All was well with our little man across the aisle: he was content with a ‘”sippy” cup and Daniel Tiger on the tablet in Mom’s lap. However, once the episode was over, he was ready to MOVE!

He was climbing over his mother to get out in the aisle, squealing with every attempt. The man sitting behind me began ‘harrumphing’ loudly in protest, and the folks in front of us turned around to seek out the source of their pre-descent wake up calls.

Momma was noticing the sharp looks and rolled eyes of those near us as she pulled out every goodie in the backpack in the search for a solid distraction. Unfortunately, nothing seemed to be working.

Until…

…the sweet teenage girl in the seat behind Little Man stuck her face up over the top of Momma’s seat.

“Peekaboo! I see you!” she said in an excited yet appropriately leveled voice. Then she put her hand around Momma’s seat and asked for a High Five. Before you knew it, High Fives were being doled out all around…I was High-Fiving, Momma was High-Fiving, flight attendants passing by High-Fived. It was a High Five Fest of epic proportions.

(It would be too magical if I told you that Mr. Grumpy Pants behind me gave a High Five, so we’ll just keep it real and confirm that he, in fact, did not participate.)

Before we knew it, Little Man was struggling to keep his eyes open through all of the action, and after Momma offered a warm hug and snuggle he was out. We were all off duty. Momma turned to say thanks to the bold girl behind her with the quick thinking skills.

Sweet Teen casually said, “Oh, no worries. It’s just a phase. I remember when my little brother went through that one. We did a LOT of High Fives.”

Just a Phase…We hear this phrase all the time; usually in

an attempt to look ahead or look past the phase we’re currently experiencing.

But, here’s the deal…

A parent has 936 weeks between a child’s birth and graduation.

You don’t want to miss what’s happening during the critical phases of

growing up.

However, if we define a PHASE as a time frame in a kid’s life when we can leverage distinctive opportunities to influence their future…

…then we’ve got a shot at getting this right.

Every Phase Is CrucialEvery phase has its own…

Significant Relationships Present Realities

Distinctive Opportunities

So we have to pay attention.

We have to do our homework.

We have to show up consistently.

We have to rally as a church to show that kids matter at every phase.

Children & FamiliesWant to be Part of The Next Phase?Join us @shpckids this year as we navigate phases with children and families.

If you have a heart for kids, we’ve got team member roles in every shape and size.

ROOM HOSTS – these folks give us 40 minutes a Sunday (20 mins. before worship/20 mins. into worship) to support our Small Group Leaders, welcome families and place new children in the appropriate Small Groups.

ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERS – these folks dream, design and build our sets for our Large Group and Big Story LIVE! stage productions. They also help us keep our kid spaces organized.

This commitment is usually 1-2 afternoons a month.

BOX ELVES - these very “behind-the-scenes” individuals give us one hour a week to build our supply boxes for our Sunday morning Small Group Leaders. This gig can be done over coffee with a friend, or on your own with your favorite music playing!

WORSHIP LEADERS – these dynamic individuals inspire our kids in Large Group worship each week by singing our favorite worship songs and sharing our weekly Bible verses. This is a rotating schedule and can be done a few times a month or a month at a time.

A Fierce Flourishingby Erin Johnson

Do you know a mom who is interested in getting together with neighboring moms to enjoy an uninterrupted meal, laugh, make friends, try some creative activities and hear inspiring speakers while their children are lovingly cared for? If so, the

answer is MOPS, a ministry whose purpose is to nurture MOMS!

underway – and our students have really adjusted well! This will be our 30th year of the weekday ministry, which we are very proud of !! We hope to have a spring celebration in honor of the great achievement!

We are thrilled to have some new families to SHPC, as well as returning families. While most of our staff are seasoned teachers, we do have a few new faces gracing our teaching staff this year.

We ministered to over 50 students this summer during our summer camps for preschool and early elementary students, and we look forward to our school year. We are thankful for this opportunity, and will continue the fun camps next summer!

True Student MinistriesWhat Does Going Deeper In Discipleship Mean to Our Youth?by Mary Aversa

As a congregation, we’ll be actively pursuing spiritual depth this fall. It will permeate our sermon series, Life Group discussions, Covenant Bible Study and your personal reading, if you’re following along with Glenn McDonald’s The Disciple Making Church.

I’ve been wondering, though, how a younger generation thinks about spiritual depth. Curious, I interviewed three students. What I found is that these particular students are highly aware of the changes in their faith in recent months, and they are fully at ease discussing their current journey and imagining changes God may have in store for them.

Joey Killeen, 9th Grade, Bowie HS

As a PK (Preacher’s Kid), Joey spent a fair amount of time trying not to be defined by his dad’s role in the church. His turning point came last summer at The Great Escape, when he realized that a life of faith is a decision, not something one inherits from family or mentors.

Joey sees his spiritual growth as a result of his willingness to go public with his faith. He does this through his talent for filmaking, but also as a cross-country runner, where he and his teammates sometimes find themselves at a moment of struggle together. Joey sees this as an opportunity to encourage others with a message of faith.

How does Joey think God will continue to shape and mold his faith? “Talk about change! I’ve changed so much in the last year because I’ve put away my limitations of what God can do. Continuing to do that…allowing God to be the author of my life, anything can happen.”

Kendall Adams, 11th Grade, Bowie HS

I thought I’d thrown Kendall with my first question, “What does growing deeper in discipleship mean to you?”; however, she was quick to answer. “Discipleship means “making more,” so growing deeper means constantly putting your faith out there, discussing it with people and making more disciples.”

Kendall’s spiritual growth has come in part through her leadership role with younger students. She says that when working with her True Tween group, she understands that she’s not just answering their questions, she’s walking in faith with them.

Kendall believes that she can only lead another person to Christ by showing them God’s love and demonstrating that faith can be lived out in a variety of ways—through worship, discussion and even music.

Keep your eye on Kendall; she believes that as a student ministry and a congregation, we’ll be growing together when we experience the Spirit together through worship, prayer and

service. I think she’ll be one member of the SHPC family leading the way.

Morgan Reeves, 2015 Austin HS Graduate

Leadership with younger students was also a catalyst to spiritual growth for Morgan, but the real defining moment in her faith story (so far) was serving on the Guatemala mission trip one year ago.

Morgan says that before Guatemala, she didn’t interpret the tugging at her heart as a “call,” but she nevertheless felt drawn to the mission trip. Once there, she could see that God’s love and grace knows no boundaries. She experienced that on a much broader global scale than ever before, and, awed, she began to surrender and listen for God’s voice.

“He was saying, ‘I’M here, and you BELONG here,’” Morgan told me. That clarity of purpose in Guatemala led to Morgan’s reponse to God’s call to serve in mission for the next nine months, deferring her college acceptance for a “gap year” with The World Race mission organization.

Morgan, like Kendall and Joey, simply desires to fulfill Christ’s Great Commision, to make disciples of others.

All three of these students are patiently, willingly, joyfully seeking the unique path God is preparing, just for them.

Welcome to True!by Rev. Mike Killeen

Welcome to True Student Ministries at Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church! Crazy games, life changing events and service opportunities help create an exciting atmosphere tailored to middle or high school students.

On Sunday mornings, middle school students (grades 6 - 8) meet at 9:30 in the Student Lounge for “True Faith,” our version of Sunday school —with a fun twist.

We encourage high school students to be in worship Sunday mornings; and after 9:30 worship, they may either assist in an 11:00 ministry around the campus or attend a Sundray morning small group at for additional study and relationship time.

On Sunday Nights, True High School 9th-12th grade meet from 6:00-7:45pm in the student lounge. We understand that there are enormous physical, emotional and spiritual differences between 9th-10th grade students and 11th-12th grade students. While True High School is for grades 9-12, True Varsity caters to needs of juniors and seniors who are starting to look beyond high school, so we break out into

two groups for discussion each week.

A True, every student is part of a a small-group or “true crew” where they will navigate the journey toward adulthood, all while building a lasting and sustaining faith. Ultimately, they’ll leave True better equipped to overcome another week of real-world challenges!

As crazy as students’ weeks are, True gives them a time and a place to have fun and to rethink the direction they are headed. True also provides a place where students are welcome and safe no matter what they have thought or done. The community at True lets them know they are not alone.

A student recently told me that True is where you should go if you really want to build your faith. Students should go to True every week if they want to have a stronger and more real relationship with God. At True you not only hear every week how God’s love is always true but you get to experience his love with people who are fun to be around. If you go every week you begin to see the world in a very different way.

If you are new to True or a parent with a student who will be attending True this fall, please visit our True Student Ministry web page at iamtrue.org, for more information, then click “My True” to set up your accounts (one for each student and one for parents).

Go Deeper this Fall with Covenant Bible Studyby Sherry Smith

Covenant is an in-depth group Bible Study that centers around our relationships with God, with each other, and with the world. It differs from other Bible studies in that it emphasizes the biblical concept of Covenant—the enduring commitment between God and people—as a unifying pattern throughout the entire Bible. It underscores the unique relationship that God chooses with us as God’s people.

The 24-week study (broken into 3 separate segments of 8 weeks each) covers the whole Bible by moving between the Old and New Testaments—discussing books from each in a way that shows the interconnectedness of scripture as a whole.

Each week’s episode includes a thought-provoking 20-minute video conversation between biblical experts that stimulates further discussion and reflection among the group members. These conversations, held around a handcrafted table, serve as a model for the kind of learning and sharing that is

central to Covenant Bible Study. Through community—through shared reflection and engagement together—we can best discover the Bible’s transformative power.

To help the Covenant group deal with busy schedules, the episodes are structured in a modular way to provide flexibility without sacrificing committed study. Three 8-episode segments each explore a different aspect of Covenant life. Each will examine what Covenant means, and the progression of a Covenant relationship with God.

Creating the Covenant examines how the Covenant community is created and established.

Living the Covenant focuses on how the community lives out their Covenant in faithful love—how it’s applied to actual relationships in everyday life.

Trusting the Covenant looks at the crises that sometimes call Covenant life into

question, and how we are restored to trust in God when troubling things happen.

Covenant Bible Study creates a learning experience where scripture meets everyday experience—within and beyond the sphere of church life. It builds trust in others as well as confidence in scripture. And it provides an exciting new opportunity to better understand God’s call, God’s love, and God’s unexpected favor.

How do I join? There are currently 4 different class times

being offered this fall for the part 1 study called “Creating the Covenant”. All of these will be taught by SHPC pastors. This is a great opportunity to get to know these pastors on a more personal level as well as enjoying great fellowship with your fellow classmates as you dig into scripture together. To sign up, contact the leaders or Sherry Smith at [email protected] or 512-656-1581.

Travel Study 2015: Greece & Turkeyby Sherry Smith

The 2015 SHPC Greece travel study experience was as amazing as we thought it would be. Sixteen travelers “walked in the footsteps of Paul” as we visited many of the cities where he preached. We stood before the “bema” or judgement seat in Corinth where he was put on trial but had his case dismissed. We saw where he was imprisoned in Philippi. We worshipped by the river where he first

preached in Europe and baptized Lydia, the first European convert. We crossed the Aegean to Ephesus, Turkey, and saw the huge theater where the silversmiths rioted against him because

they were losing sales on idols when he converted people to Christianity. It was a meaningful experience that we’ll

be talking about for a long time.

The next SHPC travel study experience is being planned for Sept 2016. Contact

Sherry Smith at [email protected] to be put on the interested list to make sure you receive further announcements.

Seeking Depth, Body & Soulby Jessica Goulding

When I began training to be a yoga teacher in 2003, I had no idea what a spiritual journey it would be. A lifelong Christian, I brought with me to yoga teacher training a long, though somewhat immature, personal history and walk with Christ.

Daughter of a Catholic father and Presbyterian mother, I went to both church and mass, and both Sunday School and CCD. I loved both my Catholic and Protestant roots, and resonated deeply with both for quite a while. I loved the ritual of the Catholic experience. I prayed the rosary, took Communion, did the sign of the cross, and could recite the words along with the priests. (Still can!) The minister at First Presbyterian Church of Kingwood was a guiding light to us all, and was with me from my confirmation to my wedding. When I came into my own version of feminism, I left the Catholic Church because I knew I had a voice, and it wouldn’t be heard there. The church leaders in my life all encouraged me to answer a call they saw for me in ministry.

From childhood, through college, through a professional career, and even now occasionally, I am a dancer. This means the instrument of my life is my body. I have a profound respect for the ability of the body to express unsaid emotion, to create, and especially to worship. Under my parents’ roof, it was ok to miss church on Sunday if I had a performance. “You are praising Jesus up there!” my dad would say. (He was often standing in the wings during my shows.)

I was introduced to yoga as part of my dance education at UT as a way to tone and strengthen the body in a balanced way, in order to keep it healthy in a physically demanding dance career. At first, I thought it was so weird! My professor recognized this, wanted to challenge me, and so assigned me to learn to teach yoga for my pedagogy course. I taught “Yoga for Seniors,” and fell in love. Here was a way to help others bring their mind, spirit, and body together and feel the wholeness I feel when I’m dancing! I saw

immediately the rewards ANYONE can feel when they are more in touch with all three facets of themselves.

When it was time to transition from performance to motherhood, I decided to do my yoga teacher training, as I thought it would be a good next phase of my career. It was during the training I started learning more about the Eastern philosophies and traditions. I loved the way yoga postures were intended to prepare the body to sit in prayer and meditation, and the postures themselves felt like prayers of the body. I loved meditation, as it brought me closer to the Holy Spirit and my sense of Christ in my life. So often we learn more about our own beliefs and traditions when we learn of and compare to others. I knew there was a way to bring this beautiful physicality and reverent silence to the Protestant Christian experience, and I spent the next ten years studying it for myself. Could we bring Biblical Scripture to life in breath, body, and meditation, so it’s not just something we read but something we experience?

In 2012, I took a Mark Manuscript class with Larry Coulter, and he gave me the final piece of encouragement I needed to share what I had discovered with others, and Body and Soul Yoga was born. Since then, I have continued to examine, experiment, study, pray about, and teach yoga from a Christian perspective. It is an ever-evolving process that Shepherd of the Hills has so generously allowed me to do.

I am most excited about starting again this fall in the Sanctuary for complete worship through body, mind, and spirit. As Jesus said in Gethsemane, “Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” This Temple—the body we have been given—is a path to inner strength and love. In many ways, it mirrors the state of our soul. It is an access road to the still, small voice within.

Please join me in October on Sunday evenings. We’re going deep.

PrimeTimeThe Association of Retired Christian Men (ARCM)by Ron Miller

Decades ago, many SHPC men met on a monthly basis for an early Saturday morning breakfast. Twenty or more of us volunteered to cook, clean or lead a devotional. Jim Black hosted and organized each meeting, and he is still active in a leadership role in our present day organization, ARCM.

In the early years, we did not have any emphasis on the age or our participants, but as our congregation grew in size, various men’s groups emerged, and the Association of Retired Christian men was formed with a weekly meeting time.

Though we’re mostly retired, men of all ages are welcome. We have retired engineers, a

clock maker, attorneys, a fighter pilot, a man who flew the Hump in WWII, a contract specialist, a medical doctor, a navigator, a former ice dancer, a corporate treasurer, and more. Two of our regular attendees are in the mid 90’s. (What is in that church coffee?) Paul wrote about the value of diversity Christians in the church. In Ephesians 4:9-16, telling us that all of us knit together the body of Christ in the Church.

In the past year, we studied the three missionary journeys of Paul, including Paul’s bringing Timothy into discipleship which led to Timothy leading the Church of Ephesus. Rev. Jim Capps completed

this study with a first-person presentation, assuming the role of Timothy, for the members of ARCM and the Mary Martha Circle.

During this summer we have had various leaders bring indepth studies of topics such as The Apostle’s Creed and Christ’s Parables.

Needless to say, we not only enjoy fellowship in ARCM, we enjoy a special level of study of scripture. While we invite the Triune God to each of our meetings, we hope and pray that you will join us too.

ARCM meets each Thursday in the WC library, at 10:00 A. M. Please call Ron Miller, 512-892-1862 for further discussion.

A GIFT FOR AL LEPLEYby Mary Helen McAllister

A showman and scientific historian, Daniel G. Benes has been called a “modern Thomas Edison” so many times, he finally turned into one! Daniel is a passionate collector of antique scientific, radio, electrical, and medical devices. Some of his collection has been on display in museums, including an Edison museum in Chicago. Last Spring, Daniel (dressed as Thomas Edison) entertained the PrimeTimers with a talk on Thomas Edison and a demonstration of how many of his antique scientific devices worked.

One of these instruments was a telegraph machine. At the end of his demonstration, Daniel noticed a man in a wheel chair tapping out a message on the telegraph. This had never happened at any of Daniel’s shows, so he went over and talked to the man…..

Al Lepley. Al told them that he had recognized the machine like one he had used in the past.

Several days later, Daniel called me and asked if he could give Al a telegraph machine just like the one in his own display. We contacted Karen Greathouse (Al’s daughter), she was thrilled, and plans were made. I knew that Daniel was going to try to find a telegraph like the one Al would have used, but did not realize the extent Daniel would go to present Al with a workable, beautiful, and fully restored machine housed in a mahogany case with brass trim and label identifying it as “Al Lepley’s Telegraph”. Daniel presented the machine to Al at PrimeTime’s June Lunch Bunch…..a great gift for a great guy!
