Last Fall, we asked all of you to be the church...to step into active roles at SHPC that you may or may not have considered before. So many of you have given of your time and talents that we could never get all of those thank-yous into a single newsletter, but we have dedicated this entire issue to thanking you, collectively for your service.

From the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU.

The Shepherd’s Watch

JIM’S JOTTINGSby Rev. Jim Capps

The Bible is resplendent with words of gratitude to God for the wondrous ways He works in and through others. When starting his letters to various churches and individuals, the Apostle Paul is a master at beginning with words of heart-felt thanksgiving. Paul’s Letter to the Philippians is often called a “thank-you note,” dripping with feeling to one of his favorite churches. Notice the past, present, and future dimensions in these beautiful words in Philippians 1:3-16:

“I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until

now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Jesus Christ.”

While I only have been here for a little over 4 months, I am grateful already for our partnership in the gospel. As I think about the happenings of the past few weeks—with the decision to follow Ted Thulin’s recommendation to not renew our lease with St. John’s for the Brodie Ministry Site, as well as Ted’s letter of resignation—I am filled with thanksgiving to God.

First I am appreciative for the partnership in the gospel I have experienced with Ted and Tara. While it means stepping out into a season of uncertainty for them, they feel strongly that

this is the course God has called them to take. I fully believe that God is going to bless and use them as they faithfully follow God’s lead into the future.

I might add that I am also grateful to the Session of SHPC which has tenderly cared for Ted, Tara and their family. Ted will work alongside of us until the end of August and then will be given a generous severance package. That package will be presented by the Personnel Committee to and approved by the Session at their July meeting. Ted will preach last at Brodie on August 16th and at William Cannon on August 23rd.

I also am filled to overflowing with thanksgiving for all those people who have

Thank You, PrimeTime, for Staffing Our Office Shifts! One of the big changes we went

through at the end of 2014 was the retirement of Belva Koerth, who had been SHPC’s office manager for 30 years. With Belva’s departure, we made the decision to hire a part time Office Administrator rather than a full time Office Manager. Cathy Williams is doing a fantastic job in that role!

Our challenge, however, was staffing the reception desk in the afternoon hours when Cathy is gone. We had a tough time filling afternoon shifts...that is, until Marilynn Jennings stepped up and said she’d fill them for us!

Marilynn and the PrimeTime rounded up enough afternoon volunteers to fill shifts every Monday

through Thursday afternoon! We’re tremendously grateful to our office volunteers who keep our front desk staffed and help us with a variety of tasks.

These office volunteers, in addition to our newsletter mail prep crew and our bulletin prep crew are lively part of our office operations, and we love them!

Our 2015 office volunteers are:Jody Wright, Marilyn Jennings, Kathy Proctor, Claudia Lauber, Sid & Mary Helen MacAllister, Oscar Erlanson,

Lynn & Gene Wright, Bonnie Schramm, Helen Turrentine, Pam Gunter, Stefan & Pat Haag, Ron & Trinka Miller, Laura Bost, Dianne O’Leary, Ron & Annie Ward, Jeanette & Gordon Box, Mary Lutenbacher, Mary Daves, Clif & Susan Martin, Dan Lawler, Jim Black

worshiped and served over the past 3 years at the Brodie campus. For many good reasons, I believe we are following God’s lead in non-renewing the lease and curtailing ministry there; however, it has been a huge success.

Anyone who has worshiped at Brodie will agree with me that it has been filled with joyful wonder. The talented, Spirit-filled music team as well as Ted’s preaching and leadership have been used by God in ways more than any of us can fathom. The welcoming, caring

culture of that worship experience has been sensational.

There are those who have come to a point of faith in God through Jesus Christ through the ministry at Brodie. Huge steps of faith have been taken by many as they have grown into the leadership responsibilities they have lovingly accepted. Small groups have been a vital part of the spiritual DNA of our Brodie sisters and brothers.

Ted’s leaving and the closing of our Brodie Ministry Site can never

diminish what God has done there. Praise and thanksgiving be to our glorious and gracious God! While we hurt with our sisters and brothers who are disappointed and maybe disillusioned by these happenings, we welcome them back to William Cannon where we need their joyful energy.

Let me close with these words from Paul’s Letter to the Thessalonians 5:16-18:

“Be joyful always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

May God bless you and make you a blessing.Jim

William & Charles Experience SHPC Hospitality!Reverend William Simbeye and Elder/Heademaster Charles Theu experienced wonderful hospitality on their

trip! While a few of their planned activities were rained out, they had a great time visiting with families and seeing the sights. We are so grateful for our relationship with the Manyamula village and congregation and the work Charles and William do there.

Many thanks go out to everyone who attended their presentations and those who hosted a meal or event with William and Charles!

Property Team Keeps Us In Top Shape!SHPC’s team of property

volunteers works at both campuses on projects big and small to care for our buildings and equipment. In a budget year as tight as this one, they play a huge role in helping us keep our costs down. So far in 2015, our property team has pruned trees, installed lighting upgrades, fixed plumbing leaks inside and outside, performed energy-saving tasks, and much,

much more! Some of our property volunteers have (or have had)

careers in maintenance, plumbing, electrical or other property-type fields, while others are simply willing and handy at property tasks. This is definitely an area where volunteers of all skill levels can make a big difference.

We’ve also added landscaping volunteers who have kept our flowerbeds looking fresh, and they even

did a special rushed weeding job before Easter so we’d look great for visiting guests!

Many thanks property and landscaping volunteers!• Gene Wright (Property Committee elder/chairperson) • Don Greathouse• Ron Ward• LaDair Wright• Mark Fetzer• Oscar Erlanson• Tim & Azam Waugh• Mark Kirsch• Grady Morris• David Wheeler• Many thanks also to Jennifer and Richard Morris for

Fellowship Committee Pulls Off Another Awesome Holy Smokes!Thank you to the Fellowship and Mission committees for putting on

a great event with the Holy Smokes BBQ and mission fair! Our mission partners had representatives on-hand answering questions, handing out information, and signing up supporters and volunteers.

The weather was perfect and the lawn green and beautiful after the May rains. We couldn’t have asked for a better day!

Leaving a Legacy for the Next Generation“He grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God, and man.” – Luke 2:52This is how the Bible describes Jesus as he grew up. This year, these teams of dedicated volunteers worked to

help the children in our Cradle-to-College ministries on both of our campuses grow and learn in this same manner. Some of these folks have worked with the same group of children for several years. These individuals make

up the heart of our programs, and we are so thankful for their CONVICTION to invest in the lives of the Next Generation of SHPC.

True Student Ministries VolunteersOur fantastic roster of True Crew leaders have done a fantastic job of modeling our three core truths for their small groups

week after week. What are our core truths at True?• I am created to pursue an authentic relationship with my creator.• I believe in Jesus Christ and define who I am by what he says.• I exist every day to demonstrate God’s love to a broken world.

Camp Creative Helpers Are the Best!Thank you to EVERYONE who joined us the first two weeks

of June for Camp Creative: our 2-week prep time to get all of our decorations ready for the big week! We could not have done it without you, and we are so thankful to all of you who took things home, came early, stayed late, and used your creative side to make VBS week so special for our kids!

THANK YOU, VBS VOLUNTEERS!We had a great time at VBS June 15-19, as we explored how to put God’s love in action in our own lives. We gathered every day in the Sanctuary with Coach Capps and our new friend, Checkers the Cheetah, to learn our Action Word each day, and then traveled through our Games, Craft, Science and Bible story rotations to get creative about how we can MOVE, ACT, CARE, FOLLOW, and SHARE God’s love each and every day! Thanks to all of our volunteers for a fantastic week!

Flood Relief Volunteers Help Recover and RebuildCentral Texas has perhaps never seen a flooding event quite like the tragic Blanco River Memorial Day floods

that devastated parts of Wimberly and San Marcos. During an event like this one, it would be nearly impossible for families and businesses to come back without help from many, many hands.

SHPC participated in the cleanup and built sheds for John Knox Ranch, and with the help of teams like ours from many more Presbyterian churches, JKR has been able to welcome kids to camp on schedule!

Cleanup continues in hard-hit neighborhoods, and Austin Disaster Relief Network is now looking for families and church-based organizations to adopt families struggling to recover from flood damage. For information on this and the ongoing cleanup efforts, go to www.adrntx.org.

Big Changes Are Coming for The Shepherd’s Watch! We receive feedback from many people in a variety of ways regarding our forms of communication at

Shepherd of the Hills. You let us know through emails, phone calls and casual conversations what is helpful to you and what you might like to see change a bit.

Next month, the Shepherd’s Watch Newsletter will change A LOT. We’re moving away from a monthly newsletter that is typically filled with event announcements and recaps to a quarterly publication that will be focused more on articles about the various ministries of the church.

The next issue of The Shepherd’s Watch will come in mid-to-late August, and we hope that you will be as excited about the changes as we are!
