The Shepherd’s Watch

SAY YES!by Chris Gordon, Director of Children’s Ministry

Dear friends,I know what you’re thinking: with

an article title like, “Say YES,” this must be a giant recruiting moment for the Children’s Ministry Director.

I’m not gonna’ lie. It could be.But my intent with this article goes

beyond that. Say YES was actually the theme for the 2014 Orange Conference that our Children’s Ministry Leadership Team attended in May. We spent 3 great days listening and learning, worshiping and sharing with some of the best and the brightest in today’s churches from across the US and several other countries.

What a wonderful time to reflect on what we’ve done in Children’s Ministry, as well as a chance to find energy in the possibilities of saying YES. But saying YES doesn’t just apply to ministry; the strength of YES is found most when YES is applied to life.

When I look back on my life, my greatest memories—my favorite moments and relationships—are there because I said YES.

Saying YES to flute lessons as a child garnered a life-long love of music.

Saying YES to an artistic best friend in elementary school put some much

needed curlicues in my “right angle” world.Saying YES to sleep-away camp in

middle school sparked a relationship with a Savior I always knew of but had never known.

AND...Saying YES to a date with a skinny, blonde-

haired drummer in high school mapped out the greatest adventure of my life.

The opportunities to Say YES just kept on

coming…YES to first jobs; YES to big moves; YES to volunteer opportunities,

to new friends, to small groups,

to rediscovering old hobbies. Sometimes, YES

brought with it a larger experience than I had expected. Better still; saying YES often dropped an opportunity for learning, for stretching and for growing right into my lap.

The opportunity to Say YES is all around us, especially here at SHPC.

What will you Say YES to this year? Here are some possibilities:

Say YES to an unknown future and YES to a God that has your back.Say YES to your marriage.Say YES to the mess of working with middle-schoolers.

Say YES to the endless questions of elementary-aged kids.Say YES to joining a small group. (Not big enough? Say YES to leading one!)Say YES to mentoring, to training, to comforting.Say YES to not having it all together.Say YES to a God that is bigger than you think. So, my challenge to you for the month of June is to explore the moments of YES in your life so far…and the

opportunities for YES that are reaching out to you now. Where has saying YES shaped you in your life? And where can you be shaped looking forward?

Say YES, friends…God knows what will happen…and you don’t want to miss it.

PS—SHPC Children’s Ministry is saying YES to social media! Tweet us @shpckids and tell us what you’re saying YES to this year!

Preschool NewsOur memory verse is from

Exodus 20:12, “Honor your father and mother,” and we have really worked on showing our parents some extra love! The children made beautiful gifts for their Moms then celebrated Mother's Day with a special Mother's Day Tea. To honor our fathers, the kids were so happy

to share a doughnut with the big man in their life. Dad's filled our classrooms during the Doughnuts with Dad event.

We also had the kids’ favorite event, Big Wheel Round Up. They washed their bikes, trikes, and scooters off then rode all over campus and really had a blast!

Before we take a little break for summer, we have a fun splash day coming soon, as well as Graduation for the children going off to Kindergarten. If you, or someone you know, is looking for a fun summer camp, our open spots are filling up fast! Contact Pattie to reserve your child's spot.

Worship and Family: Role Modeling the Core Principles5 Core Practices

Worship, Grow, Connect, Serve and Invite. These are the five core practices of a disciple of Christ which shape our church’s work. We believe that maintaining these practices in our lives provide a pathway to a vibrant Christian walk.

This is true not only for adults but also for our kids. One of the tools for raising our kids in an intentionally Christian home is to model and teach these five practices. For example, developing a household habit of serving others is one of the things that young adults who are active in church point to as a foundation for their current faith. The same could be said of the other four practices as well.

As you move into the summer of 2014 you might ask two questions.

“Am I a good model of these core practices for my kids?” “Do I have a plan for teaching them to my kids?”Summer is a good time to ask this because the

change of schedule naturally gives families time to recover from a busy school year. It also gives parents time to take an assessment of their kids and how God is

using them to shape children’s growth. For the church’s part we use the summer to invite

our elementary school kids back into worship. We shut down our Sunday school education and encourage our kids to come to the sanctuary with their parents. This is a great time for them to learn about worship and especially worship music. We will have something in each service for the children but, more importantly, summer worship will give you the opportunity to model and teach your kids about this critical practice in our Christian lives.

Reading the ProverbsIn the summer we will be looking at the life of

Solomon and the three books he authored; Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Song of Solomon. We are asking everyone to read along with the Proverbs. It’s easy! Proverbs is 31 short chapters long. Read one chapter a day. If you miss one day, just pick up again with the chapter that corresponds to the date. (i.e. June 12 read chapter 12)

This is a great way to read with your kids and talk about it.

Page 5: 2014 June - The Shepherd's Watch Newsletter

It’s TOGETHER Time!Attention Parents: your sons and

daughters will soon be joining you in church…for the whole summer.

Some of you are thinking, “Fantastic! Extra bonding time!”

Some of you, however, may have alternate reactions, like, “I’m going to have to put up with all their squirming during my worship time.” Or maybe, “I am going to answer their questions a million times over during my worship time.” The eye roll count is going to be off the charts this summer!”

It’s time to get ready for summer worship with your kids. You may already know that they are going to test your resolve by whining, crying and maybe even fighting. Don’t give in, and don’t give up. The benefits of a deep and growing relationship with Christ are eternal and are backed up by the broad community that is the church as they invest in you and your son or daughter.

Here are some tips to make

the most of the summer worship opportunity.1. Make sure they know that church

attendance is expected, even if they are tired.

2. Help them put down the digital device during worship (studies are showing kids have a growing susceptibility to addiction through their screen use).

3. Sit up front! It’s counterintuitive but it really works and the worship experience is much better!

4. Always remember that one of your main goals is to pass along your faith to them. The best place for that to happen is in a caring church community.

5. Don’t reward fussy or moody behavior by giving into their requests to stay home or play in the Narthex.

6. Remind them on Friday and Saturday that you (and they)

are going to church on Sunday. Keep it positive!

7. We love you and are happy to see your kids! Remember that much of what they are doing is only bugging you, not those sitting around you.

8. Have a few open ended questions ready for the end of the sermon like, “What do you think the pastor was trying to say?” or, “Why would that be important?”

We know it can be hard, but thank you for what you do when you bring your children/teens to church. Please know that your family -- with all of its noise, struggle, commotion, emotions, moods, drama and joy -- are not simply tolerated at Shepherd of the Hills, you are a vital part of the community gathered together to worship a God that invited all the children to be with him.

God's Love is always True!

TRUE STUDENT MINISTRIESLaunching in 3.. 2.. 1..by Andie Kruczkowski

All of this school year, I have not felt like a senior. I've been dreading going to school, slept in more times than I can

count, forgotten my materials

at home, gone off campus, and have lounged around during my off-period, but I have never felt like a senior... until last night.

Yesterday was truly the best day of my life. (go ahead, play American Authors' smash hit while you're reading) last night, I was “launched” into the adult world from my church. It was the most memorable experience, joining the people that I have grown up with.

The whole thing felt like a talk show; or at least one of those episodes of a TV show that it flashes everything back. Definitely more like a talk show. I even walked up at the end of my video and said, “I feel like I’m Ellen on her show or somethin’.”

Basically, in a nutshell: we watched photo montages, a

video interview of us, and listen to countless numbers of prayers as God watched over us.

After the entire thing, we took many pictures. “IS THIS WHAT BEING FAMOUS FEELS LIKE?!” I shouted out loud, but at the end of the church service today, I did feel like a celeb.

After the pictures, we were awarded with brand new bibles! and let me tell ya, they are amazin'. because number 1. My name is engraved on it so in case I forget who I am, badda-bing, badda-boom. Number 2. My name is spelled RIGHT. Pretty rockin' if you ask me. Number 3. THEY LAY FLAT. My goodness, I have been waitin' my whole life for a lay-flat Bible. ESPECIALLY after being at Pine Cove last week when the wind started to pick up. And number 4. At the end of the pages, it explains the verse or story and things. You know, if I’m all like, “huh?!” (that

bear story in 2 Kings last week...yep this will be useful.)

So after all the tears and after all the praise and pictures, we got kidnapped into ultra amazin' SLEEPOVER! Chips and dip, pizza, and s'mores, plus the people I LOVE--EVERYTHING•IS•AWESOME!

And so now I thank everyone... Jonathan Slaughter, Mike,

Lindsay, Katie Beth, Matthew, Mary, I cannot thank you guys enough. You guys have molded me into who I am this year and are amazing role models in my life.

Juniors and everyone else: I love you guys and wish you all the best next year. I’ll visit as much as I can. :)

Seniors: I love seeing you guys (almost) every week. I know you guys will do some amazing things, and I love talking to you guys at sticky, or even just dissecting what we just learned. You guys mean SO much to me and I

love you all so very much.

This article was previously published in Bowie High School Senior, Andie Kruczkowski’s blog, “andie meets world.” We thank Andie for her permission to publish this article, and we wish her many blessings next year at the University of Arizona, where she plans to study journalism.

Summer Movie ClubJoin Pastor Mike and the True student ministry team

as we go and see all of this summer’s blockbusters. After the film we gather and talk about where you

might be able to find a story of faith and even our story of faith that has been woven into these big films.

Some will be awesome and some will be awful, but we will be together cheering and groaning together. Parents are always welcomed and encouraged to join us at the movie club. We post the theater and time for each film on the trueshpc Instagram account.

Brodie Middle School Breakfast Bunchby Pattie Lawrence

Flexibility was the name of the game at SHPC Brodie for Middle School students. With no space to meet on-campus Sunday mornings, Mary Aversa and I formed the Brodie Breakfast Bunch.

The group of 6 to 12 met once a month for food & fellowship. We loved picking up the kids, getting to know them and discussing the day’s sermon topic before worship.

We are hopeful that The Deck at Brodie will provide more space for us to have more regular Sunday morning events, and look forward to spending time with the kids as we continue to grow in Christ.

College Care InitiativeThe first two years of college

are scary, crazy, cool and overwhelming. Sadly as students leave high school and enter college many make a choice to let go of their faith during these years, often to never pick it up again We have put together a small group of fierce leaders who want to make sure your student who is away at college knows that their church back home really loves them and is praying for them. The College

Care Team will send out small care packages, notes and even make the occasional voice message to all our college attending students. The team encourage these college students to “Stay True” by continuing to grow their faith and to find a church community where they are planted. Even though they are busy growing their brains bigger with all their academic studies we also know that the college years are a critical time for faith and leadership

development. The college care team will help connect them to ministries on or near their campus.

If you would like to be part of the newest part of our True Student Ministries please contact Pastor Mike by emailing him [email protected]. If you have a current college student that you would like us to reach out to please forward us their school information and address so we can add them to our list.

Brodie News: Welcome to The Deck! After more than a year of planning, engineering,

legal hurdling and building, the time has finally come. The new building is officially cleared for use!

We celebrated with a ribbon cutting, prayer and dedication of the building on May 18th. St. John’s members and Pastor Scott Sandahl were also on hand to celebrate with us. The building has officially now been named The Deck.

While we still have technology installations to complete before

regular programming can take place in the building, we have held meetings and trainings in the Deck, and Pastor Ted has been working in his new office.

Special thanks go out to the volunteers who have helped in the building phase and those who have been helping clean and prepare for the first building use, including Don and Kevin Greathouse, Steve Pearson, Rose and Bruce Roseblat, Bill and Charissa Ellis, the Graves Family and the Thulin Family.

MISSION

If you are interested in the CONGO and love to eat delicious ethnic food while supporting a great cause, mark your calendars for Saturday, June 7th at 6:30 pm at the Sustainable Food Center in Austin. Daniel Kahozi, a Congolese who is earning his doctorate at UT in Comparative Literature will be discussing literature on armed conflicts in central Africa. For more information contact Sarah Stranahan at MRC, [email protected]. Hope to see you there!

Mission in Congo: Good Shepherd HospitalDid you know that for over 25

years, SHPC’s mission has reached deep into the Congo to the Good Shepherd Hospital? Because of support from organizations like ours, The Good Shepherd Hospital is able to provide medical services to a large area in central Congo, including ICU, OB-GYN, Pediatrics, a Nutrition Center, Ophthalmology, Internal Medicine, Fistula surgery and much more.

Unfortunately the Congo ranks last on the UN’s human development index, which measures poverty, standard of living, life expectancy and literacy. As SHPC members, we are assured that our mission dollars are being sent where there is deep, deep need.

Long time SHPC member, Sarah Stranahan, who grew up in Congo, travels back periodically to lead mission groups, including those with medical personnel, to work at Good Shepherd Hospital. Last June, when visiting the hospital, the group noticed that there were young mothers with severely malnourished children waiting outside the nutrition center. When asked what they were waiting for, they said that the nutrition center was closed due to lack of funds but they had nowhere to go – no hope for their children.

The mission team pooled their own money and were able to get the center opened back up for a few days, but that was only a band-aid to a dire situation.

On returning to the U.S., one of the teams was determined to raise support for the Nutrition Center, and today, the nutrition center is once again open and flourishing, providing much needed food, medicine, and education to young mothers whose babies are starving.

Some of you have donated money to purchase sewing machines for the sewing school on the Good Shepherd campus. This school was established about five years ago to give marginalized single mothers, many the victims of rape and abuse, a new life – the opportunity to become self sufficient. They attend school for a year, learning how to sew and

acquiring skills necessary to run a business. When they graduate, they receive a sewing machine to take back to their village to start their business.

One young mother tells that she had at one time lost all hope for a future for her and her son, but the Sewing School has given her a new life. It is the joy and laughter of that hope that greets visitors to the school.

On behalf of The Good Shepherd Hospital, thank you, SHPC, for your support through the years. This is just a glimpse of how your mission dollars are used to make a big difference in a country that is plagued with war and corruption. For more information, contact Sarah Stranahan at [email protected] or 512-217-0870.

Trinity Child Development CenterTrinity Child Development Center, a local mission

partner of Shepherd of the Hills, located in Northeast Austin, opened its doors in 1964 as a Presbyterian mission, and they have been serving a diverse group of children and families in terms of ethnic and socioeconomic levels since that time.

In 2001, Trinity became a National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) accredited institution. Trinity believes that the early years are critical learning years which offer the opportunity to maximize potential brain development in young children and that safe, predictable environments help children to develop trust.

Trinity is passionate about giving low-income children enriching experiences complete with music, movement, vocabulary and cognitive experiences.

In addition to providing education for children, Trinity also provides learning opportunities for parents. No family is turned away because of inability to pay. Trinity CDC works with families to subsidize their

tuition through Trinity Cares, its own fund available for families in need. This fund is made possible through donations made by SHPC and other donors. Many families also receive assistance through Workforce, the program that helps parents who are themselves going to school or who work in low-wage jobs.

Trinity CDC will celebrate its 50th Anniversary this year. Plans are currently underway for a celebration event, and they are looking for more volunteers to serve on the planning committee. In addition to being a celebration of the last 50 years, they hope to make this a fundraiser as well.

If you are interested in serving on the planning committee, the next meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Trinity Child Development Center, at 5801 Westminster Rd., on May 20, 2014.

If you have questions, feel free to contact SHPC member Alice Lineberry at [email protected] or Trinity’s director, Amanda Bendig, at 512.928.2212.

If you want to make your contribution in honor of your father or anyone else, just complete the form, fold with your monetary gift, put it in an envelope, and place it in the offering plate or in the Endowment mail box. We will send a special note to the appropriate person to let them know of your gift. If it’s your father, we will send him a special Father’s Day card. To give online, log into your account at myshpc.org and and click “Your Giving.” Choose to Give Now, then select “Endowment” from the first drop-down. You can follow that up with the below dedication information in an email to [email protected].

PRIME TIME

Buckner. We had a wonderful time!

Touring Austin City HallJoin us for a tour of Austin City Hall on Tuesday, June

3rd! We will meet at the William Cannon parking lot at 9:30 AM, so those who do not want to drive their car can carpool.

City Hall was designed by famed architect, Antoine Predock, and incorporates environmental sensitivity and innovative technology with stunning architecture. The tour and parking is free. Afterwards, we will lunch at a near by restaurant. Please RSVP so we can let the restaurant know how many are in our group. June Fellowship Lunch Bunch

We will be enjoying lunch on Saturday, June 21st, at Santa Rita Cantina on Slaughter and Escarpment across from Circle C. Come and enjoy the food and fellowship! We will be taking reservations on Sunday, May 8th and May 15th in the Narthex; or you can contact Mary Helen MacAllister.

BINGO & BOOK SWAP Sunday, July 6th, after the 11:00 service, we will

enjoy playing Bingo while eating lunch in the William Cannon FMC. Bring a vegetable, salad, or dessert (or all three!), and we will provide brisket. We will also have a book swap.

We will be taking reservations to determine how much brisket to order, but reservations are not required. So come join the fun!
