The Shepherd’s Watch November 2013 Issue 10

As Christmas and the holiday season close in we can begin to feel the shops getting crowded and parking lots getting tense. I’d like to propose that you could instead use this season as a chance to start a new holiday tradition for your family--a tradition of service.

Serving together flexes some powerful emotional and spiritual family muscles you probably did not know you had. It is also a great teaching moment as parents extend our faith beyond words and into practice. Check out 1 John 3:18 for more on that.

Serving is a way for your family to physically show the love of Christ to those in need. Remember that we all have a deep-seeded need to serve. It is part of our design.

Author and blogger Susan Mathis writes about sharing the fruit of the Holy Spirit that God has instilled in each Christian:

• Showing love to the unlovely• Passing on God’s joy to the

brokenhearted• Imparting peace to those in turmoil• Modeling patience in frustrating

situations• Demonstrating kindness to

everyone you meet• Revealing God’s goodness in

thought and deed• Walking in faithfulness every day

• Living with gentleness and self-control in every situation, even when we have to confront wrongdoing or hurt.

Here are some easy ways to serve as a family.

• Visit a nursing home and just chat.• Help stock a local food or clothing

pantry.• Bake cookies for your neighbors.• Rake and bag your neighbor’s fall

leaves.• Take an Angel off the Angel Tree

and shop together for the gift.• Sign up at the Capital Area Food

Bank to help during and again after the holiday season.

Find something that works for your family and go for it!

MISSIONFREEZE NIGHT

It has been estimated that 3000-6000 people sleep homeless in Austin every night.

Unfortunately, there are not nearly enough emergency shelter beds for this population. This massive need for shelter becomes especially evident when temperatures drops below the freezing mark.

Shepherd of the Hills, along with several area churches, go to work inacting a Freeze Night plan when temperatures dip below freezing to help out our brothers and sisters on the street through a ministry called Front Steps.

On these cold nights Central Presbyterian Church downtown opens the doors of its fellowship hall to allow homeless women to shelter from the extreme cold temperature

outside. Guests are treated to a hot dinner and a warm place to sleep, followed by breakfast the following morning.

Shepherd of the Hills is responsible for all Thursday evenings that drop below the freezing mark. This might mean one night per season, 6 nights per season, or none at all.

Hosting churches work two different shifts. The first shift prepares and serves dinner. The second shift stays overnight and prepares and serves breakfast before guests leave at 7:30 a.m.

The shelter often houses about 15-20 women per night; however, there have been nights with many more. The value of this service is evident in the gratitude of the guests who repeatedly say “Thank

you” throughout the evening. SHPC is currently looking for a co-

coordinator from our congregation to help head up our Thursday night commitment. This coordinator would be responsible for organizing the volunteers and letting them know when it’s a “freeze night” and that they are called to serve. This is a ministry that may take a very small amount of time (or more, depending on weather), but is highly rewarding.

Thank you to all of the amazing volunteers of the Freeze Night ministry.

If you have a desire to become part of the life saving ministry please contact pastor Mike Killeen ([email protected]).

Looking for White Elephant GiftsShepherd of the Hills’ mission partner, Trinity Child Development Center,

is having its Christmas family and fundraising event on Saturday, December 7th. They are collecting “white elephant” gifts for kids to buy for their parents, like that tie that wasn’t just right for you, picture frame you aren’t using, candle you haven’t burned or box of stationery you haven’t used.

They are also needing items for the parents’ shopping room. Nice “yard-sale” type children’s items are appropriate, either new or gently used. They can also use gift bags, bows, and tissue. If you have questions or need help with delivery, please contact Director Kathy Smith at 512-928-2212 or SHPC member Alice Lineberry at [email protected]

The Antioch PartnershipDid you know that

Shepherd of the Hills supports two different missionaries through The Antioch Partnership? Carol and Paul Friesen are engaged in holistic

mission work in Malaysia, working with Sabah Theological Seminary and Community Health Education. They recently participated in a retreat led by students Paul worked with last spring. The Friesens reported, “During the retreat we experienced God’s Spirit moving in

our midst and several students i n d i c a t e d their desire to engage in cross cultural mission.”

We ask for prayers for the Friesens as they travel to the U.S. in late October and November, and we ask that you would always keep the Friesens and their work in Malaysia in your prayers.

Guatemalan Crafts Market is Coming Soon! The Guatemalan Crafts Market will be coming to our church for your Christmas shopping. The market will be

held on both campuses, William Cannon and Brodie, on two Sundays, Nov. 24 and Dec. 1, before and after 9:30 am and 11 am services. The Guatemalan crafts sold by the Guatemala Partnership Team of Mission Presbytery are obtained from two fair trade organizations in Guatemala: UPAVIM, which translates to United for a Better Life and MAYAN HANDS. All monies received from craft sales are used to support these two organizations.

UPAVIM is a cooperative of about 60 women who live in slum conditions in Guatemala City. Through these crafts, these women have done remarkable things to help themselves and their families, such as establishing a medical and a dental clinic, a growth monitoring program for their children, and a day care center. MAYAN HANDS was organized about 1989 when a woman from Albany, New York was doing field studies in Guatemala as a part of h e r PhD program. She observed the beautiful weavings and the low prices the weavers received for their efforts. When she returned to the U.S., she organized MAYAN HANDS, hired a f i e l d supervisor in Guatemala to provide quality yarn for the weavers, and then worked to export their products to the U.S. where their work is in demand.

SHPC has been a member of the Guatemalan Partnership for many years and asks that you consider supporting this wonderful ministry. Payments are requested in cash or checks. Please contact Marjorie Parmer at (512)294- 3181 or [email protected] for more information.

ADULT MINISTRYGreetings from the Heart (of Tuscany)by Sherry Smith

As you read this, Rev. Larry Coulter, Joyce Stewart, and I will be leading SHPC’s fifth travel study group. This time (Nov. 3 – 12) we’ll be in Italy, studying the years 1000 to 1600. This covers the High Middle Ages and the Renaissance. We will be based in a little town called Montecatini Terme, in the heart of Tuscany. I hope you’ll be in prayer for us and those traveling with us that we may have a safe journey, learn about our Christian heritage, and grow closer together in Christian fellowship.

As some of you know, I’m an avid history reader as well as an armchair archeologist. (I wanted to be a real archaeologist until I found out the part about frequently living in tents and dealing with dust, heat, bugs, and strange foods.) When I was majoring in Religion at Furman University, I was blessed with the opportunity to spend a semester earning a credit in Biblical Archaeology in Israel and Jordan and then a credit in Renaissance/Reformation History in Italy, Switzerland, and Germany.

I had been studying the Bible regularly since I was given my first study Bible in third grade. I had also already read many history books by that time. Then, since this study trip was in my senior year, I had spent 3 ½ years studying the Bible, theology, and Christian education methodology at college level. I thought the trip would mostly be “a fun adventure” and it was that but also SO much more.

I could never even have imagined how much that study trip would mean to me. I had never been one to pay much attention to geography and topography but I found after traveling Israel from top to bottom that Bible reading was a whole new experience. Stories jumped off the page and became alive for me as I

now knew, first hand, the land these people walked, the food they ate, and the culture and politics with which they struggled. Then, I got to see the door of the church in Wittenberg, where Luther nailed his 95 theses which launched the Protestant Reformation. As Wittenberg was then still in East Germany, I also experienced the fear and frustration of religious and political intolerance. While I knew my previous 3 ½ years of study helped prepare me for my trip, I still felt that I actually learned more during that two months than I had in the entire rest of my college experience.

I share this with you in order to tell you a secret. Many of the people that are with me on this trip right now as you read this just think they’re going on a vacation to see pretty scenery and have fun. But I have the secret joy of knowing that their lives are going to be changed in ways they can’t even imagine. For some, it will be a special place or experience that brings them

closer to God or to the “great cloud of witnesses” that have lived Christian lives before us. For others, it may be the new Christian friendships that are developed during the adventures shared and the meal time discussions. But in one way or another all will grow and be changed and all will carry this experience with them for the rest of their lives.

I ask for your prayers that we all grow in positive ways that become foundational in our future life, studies, and ministries at SHPC. Pray that we experience things that bring us deeper insights into the Bible, our Christian heritage, and our relationships. And as we return to worship at SHPC on November 17, perhaps jet-lagged but smiling, you can smile too, knowing that your prayers have been in Italy with us.

Blessings, Sherry

“Give my greetings to all your leaders and to the other believers there. The Christians from Italy who

are here with me send you their love. God’s grace be with you all.” Hebrews 13:24-25 The Living Bible

EXPLORE GOD The Explore God Austin Citywide Initiative--7 weeks of spiritual conversation on the same topics throughout the

city of Austin--made it clear that God is working in powerful ways in the lives of so many people. The sermon series has been enlightening & fostered further discussion. More and more people are seeking out and having spiritual conversations with neighbors & with co-workers. Those in discussion groups have had a chance to explore even deeper and have honest conversations with Christians & non-believers in a safe environment.

Throughout this powerful initiative, I have heard exciting reports about how God is moving in & through the discussion groups. Here are a few positive stories from people who are hosts or are attending a discussion group:

Greg Williford: “Our group is made up of believers, non-believers, and some that simply ‘don’t know.’ We have learned from each other throughout our sessions. We have really enjoyed the approach of exploring the big questions without having to worry about swaying others’ opinions. The concept of initiating a spiritual conversation within our city is very exciting and we can’t wait to see what changes may result.”

Adrienne Voskamp: “I have been hosting an Explore God group and loving every minute of it. My group is full of Christian ladies, and this journey and exploration has helped us to dive deeper into our beliefs and question our understanding of our faith. I have grown tremendously from this study!”

Amy Lowe: “Explore God opened up a very wide door to deepen my faith in God.”Lindsee Sanchez: “I have loved Explore God. It’s refreshing to dive into these questions, and I feel safe to do

that in our group. I’ve learned a lot about my beliefs through this process and even more about God. Everyone has questions and it’s important to not be afraid to ask them no matter where we stand in our faith. “

My hope for SHPC is that what we have learned and experienced in our Explore God discussion groups will have a profound impact on how we approach our Small Group ministry in the future. 1) Place an emphasis on inviting people outside of SHPC. 2) Having a neighborhood & workplace focus. 3) Being great listeners. 4) Creating environments where people feel comfortable asking questions.

I want to give a BIG thank you to all the hosts that have led discussion groups. I also want to thank Preston, Karen, & Linda for the daily prayers & Scripture they provided via email. This whole initiative has been bathed in prayer. SHPC, keep seeking, asking & sharing. May God bless you as you continue to seek to BLESS others.

Technology and Churchby Mary Aversa

I’ll be honest with you. When the big screen monitors first went up in the sanctuary (I can’t even remember how long ago), I was not a fan. “Power Point church,” I called it. I wanted to read the Prayer of Confession from the bulletin, the scripture from a Bible and hymns from the Hymnal. As years passed though, I got used to the screens...and a style of worship that wasn’t what I had grown up with.

Now I’m completely at ease with song lyrics and unison prayer on the monitors. I think there’s a different sort of reverence when I worship with my eyes pointed always upward. I notice the people around me more--maybe even make eye contact with visitors and other members more. Not such a bad byproduct of those screens I started out with such an aversion to.

When my daughter and I joined the pilgrims at Brodie, it took a surprisingly short time for me to get used to watching a recorded sermon on a big BIG screen. I’m also accustomed to seeing our Pastors read scripture and sermon notes from their iPads. And I’ve come to realize that this is my daughter’s church experience; it’s what will feel familiar and even nostalgic

when she’s my age. Maybe that’s helped me settle into big screens and presentation technology.

But what about personal technology in church? I see more and more people taking out mobile devices during worship, and though some may question the appropriateness of this, I know that many of the people sitting around me in church use Bible apps to reference scripture both outside of church and, yes, during worship.

YouVersion is a popular Bible app that lets users not only read scripture, but also take notes during a sermon, subscribe to devotional series’ and more. We also offer the option of making offering online, and even now have an offering form that can be completed on a mobile device during the offertory if members or visitors so choose.

All this said, we also know that there are misuses of technology in church. While visiting out-of-town family once, I sat in a Catholic Mass where the priest said that after preaching a sermon he thought was particularly inspiring, he looked out to see the heads of even his youth bowed in reverence--he thought. After briefly reveling in the

s a t i s f a c t i o n of the well-d e l i v e r e d sermon, he realized that the heads of his youth were actually bowed because they were texting.

So while we no longer frown on mobile devices being used in church, we do need to be careful not to completely leave etiquette behind. Ringers and any audible notifications should always be turned off before worship begins, answering texts and phone calls should wait until after church, and we always want our students engaged in worship rather than their mobile devices.

We’d like to know what you think. If you’d like to weigh in on how you use technology in worship, you want to know more about worship-related apps others are using, or you have general thoughts on the topic, please email me at [email protected] and include “Technology in Church” in the subject line.

Preschool NewsWhat a happy bunch of children we have

here! All of the kids have settled into school and are more familiar with their routines. We started the month with learning about The Five Senses. The kids explored stations set up to engage their five senses. This was a huge hit!

Our next event, Big Wheel Round Up, is the kids favorite! Ride on toys, trikes and bikes took over the grounds as kids rode here and there. The “car wash” station was put to good use as the kids washed off their rides.

Through the Community Helpers unit the kids learn more about the men and women who use their talents to be Firefighters,

Doctors, Police and more. Several classes created great works of art highlighting our Firefighters. We also have our annual visit with the Firefighters to round out this lesson. It’s a great experience for the kids to get to check out the equipment and the truck. Though our visit from the fire department had to be postponed,

the children have truly enjoyed the unit! The cooler air reminds us that Fall is upon

us, and this brings our yearly Costume Caper. Once a year we have princesses, witches,

tigers, dinosaurs, cats, super heroes and more under our preschool roof! They are the cutest and love this yearly tradition of trick or treating the hallways.

relationship with God. It is a painless and fun ten weeks led by pastor Mike and members of the True Student Ministry team. Each confirmation student will get a mentor, attend 10 classes and go to one of the greatest Pine Cove retreats ever!

Classes start early in January. (Register online at iamtrue.org).

We heard students say it was “fun and funny” and “I wasn’t embarrassed at all.” Parents were a bit nervous at first but they quickly warmed up and started laughing as we shared about growing up and the information and mis-information

we had when we were at that awkward age.

Thank you to all of the participants, and for those of you with students nearing this magical age, watch for the conference this time next year!

We are excited to be joining SHPC and look forward to getting to know our new church family.

George & Janet Cozart

Sara JensenMy daughter Lizzie Jensen (a 4th grader) and I have been attending here for several years, and SHPC is our extended family. I teach 4th graders in UpStreet this year, and I work at Dell in marketing. I have two older children who are out of the home, Emma Keenan, age 20, and Hank Keenan, age 18 and a freshman at UTSA. Lizzie loves singing and drama and attends Mills Elementary.

John and Bonnie SchrammWe recently relocated to Austin to be closer to our kids and grandkids after living in California for 41 years. We are settling into our new home and surroundings. Finding a warm, welcoming church family at SHPC has been a wonderful gift since moving to Austin.
