God is doing something amazingin Austin, Texas. Over 260 Aus-

tin churches have signed on topreach this fall on 7 importantquestions. Questions like "Does lifehave purpose?" and "If God is loving, why is there evil in the world?" Theinitiative is called Explore God andit is designed to give the averageChristian a starting place for havinga spiritual conversation with theirfriends at work and in their neigh-borhoods.

Let’s back up. As we grow inChrist we develop a natural de-

sire to share our faith with others. But most us feel incredibly uncom-fortable talking openly about spiri-tual things. We have no problemcalling a friend when we've found anew barbecue place or a new wayto get a juice stain out of clothing.

But a conversation about God—that's intimidating.

Explore God will give tools tohelp ease the intimidation and

start a discussion about God that isnatural and life-giving. Over thenext few months you will hear agreat deal about Explore God. Fornow, I encourage you to do twothings. First, pray that God will useExplore God to make a major im-pact on the city of Austin. Second, check out the Explore God websiteat exploreGod.com. God is doingamazing things in Austin, Texas. Iam thankful that we get to be apart of it together.

Lemonade Anyone?Deborah Ballew for Stephen Ministry

It’s been said when life hands youlemons – make lemonade! Soundseasy right? Wrong! Life is messy andwe all find ourselves in a time ofmessiness wondering if anyonecares. YES THEY DO!

In June, SHPC will commission 17Stephen Ministers. Stephen Ministryis a ministry of presence. StephenMinisters receive 50 hrs of trainingon dealing with all the “lemons” oflife: illness, divorce, job loss, deathand more. A Stephen Minister cancome along side you to help youthrough the messy time, and one ofthe core values of this ministry isconfidentiality— no one will everknow who’s receiving care or why.We are here because we care.

When I walked into myfirst training class back inJanuary I wondered what Iwas doing there andwhy. Now my ques-tions have been an-swered threefold. First, thistraining helped me to understandsome of the lemons in my life andenabled me to grow in my faith.Second, I have had the joy and priv-ilege to be taught by leaders whosewisdom, compassion and spiritfilled the room week after week.Third, it is a blessing to be sur-rounded by 16 unique, talented andloving individuals who will soon em-bark on a journey to serve this con-gregation as Stephen Ministers.

Caring Forever EndowmentAward Recipient 2013: OpenArmsLast year, the recipients of our annualaward were a missionary couple work-ing in Honduras’ Miskito region. Thisyear we’ve come back to Austin, toOpen Arms. Founded by Leslie Beasleyand Lacey Strake in 2010, Open Armsfocuses on employing refugee women inthis clothing business, including in man-agement, sales, and product develop-ment roles. Women from Sudan,Bhutan/Nepal, the Congo, Iraq, Burmaor other countries around the world, whohave fled horrific conditions at home, are mak-ing a new home in Austin with the help of OpenArms.

Open Arms is an unusual choice for our annualaward in that it is a social enterprise — a busi-ness established with the objective of providingjob training and education. It’s a business, how-ever, that matches the goals of our endowmentaward. It has the goal of both providing trainingin job skills and business management, and edu-cation in English. By combining ESL and enrich-ment classes on an as-needed basis withfamily-friendly hours, Open Arms provides refu-gees a living wage at the same time that it of-fers a pathway to self-sufficiency andintegration into a new country. Not only that, but the products are great: Open Arms uses onlyrecycled goods and clothes (mostly recycled t-

shirts) to sew and make the final product. Theirproducts are sold around town — including atWhole Earth and Whole Foods — and online attheopenarmsshop.com.

We at SHPC have many connections Open Armsand the mission it serves. Many members of ourcongregation are active in refugee services, andin February of 2011 one of Open Arms’ workersfrom Bhutan, Tila Ruby, came and spoke to ourPrimeTime group about her life in the refugeecamp, as well as what she has learned here andis able to accomplish now by working in the USand in this organization. We have even held at-shirt drive for Open Arms! They are a greatorganization with a great mission, and we aredelighted to have them as our 2013 grant recipi-ent.

Each June, as we wind down our year of programming, we take a moment to focus someattention on the folks who SERVE to help us GROW as a congregation. We couldn’t beeffective in spreading God’s kingdom without relying on each other’s help to get usthere. We are deeply grateful for all the adult small group leaders, study facilitators,Disciple leaders with their 9-month commitment, PrimeTime Council members, and oth-er helping hands in Adult Ministry. But as seriously as we take our responsibility to growas adult disciples, we take our ORANGE responsibility even more seriously…

“He grew in wisdomand stature, and infavor with God, andman.” – Luke 2:52

This is how the Bibledescribes Jesus as hegrew up. These teamsof dedicated volunteersworked to help thechildren in our Cradle-to-College ministries(on two campuses!)grow and learn in thesame way. Some ofthese folks haveworked with the samegroup of children forseveral years (!). Theseindividuals make up theheart of our programs, and we are so thankfulfor their commitmentand the investmentsthey are making in thelives of the children atSHPC.

Becoming a Disciplefrom Glenda Detling

About this time last year I was a frequent visi-tor at Shepherd of the Hills. Life's events overthe previous few years had left me emotionallyand spiritually depleted. I was definitely insearch of a way to re-energize myself and mybelief-system. At some point in that spring Inoticed an ad for the Inquirers class, and decid-ed it was time to make a commitment to thisvibrant and energetic congregation. I joinedthe congregation in June, 2012. Almost at thesame time I read a piece about the Discipleclasses coming up in the fall. I felt a verystrong pull to commit to a study group and re-ally try to gain some understanding of this bookof which I had read only very small incrementswith only rudimentary understanding of what itcan mean to my life in Jesus Christ.

I was in a class with seven other people, plusour teacher, Bob Beardslee. I understood fromthe start that we would be reading most of theBible (Geneses to Revelation) over a period of 9months. Early in the study, I decided to useearly morning time to do my reading. I havefound that to be a time of prayer and medita-tion, as well. To have a time that is uninter-rupted by other events of the day has beenvery helpful.

As I began my reading I recognized many of thechapters and verses that I had read all throughmy life; but this time I read these verses withina much larger context than I ever had in thepast. The study manual organizes the readings, often pairing verses from one book with thoseof another to provide insight into the mysteryand majesty of God and the response of man-kind. In some lessons we read huge swaths ofhistory that lead us to understand how this

I am so excited about the response we had thisyear to our request for story submissions about

month, please read some more stories and see ifit sounds like there is group that seems right foryou.

Living Yoga, Living Faithfrom Jessica Goulding (JessG)

Back in February 2013, 15 disciples of Christcame together for the first time for a Christianyoga class based on the book An Altar in theWorld, by Barbara Brown Taylor. Some studentshad never done yoga, many had done some yo-ga, and a few even teach yoga. As we jour-neyed together through the twelve practices ofbringing worship into even the most mundaneparts of our lives, each of us grew in our under-standing of God's presence in our day in everymoment. The key is to be aware of and makespace for that presence. We recognized howseldom we stop and listen. We remembered towalk this earth with purpose. We journaledand confronted some uncomfortable and evenpainful parts of our lives. And we accepted ourbodies as the perfect vehicle for all of it. Welaughed as we fell out of poses, groaned as ourbodies held on, squealed with delight over oldpains vanishing, and cried with release of long-held emotions. Our little group in the FMC be-came a family. Here is what they said:"My life is crazy-busy. My days — and the days of myfamily— are filled with school, work, volunteering, sports, tutoring, work travel, true, and family andfriends. It is incredibly easy to lose track of who I am,what I believe and how I want to live my life. I amgrateful for Jessica's yoga practice, and that she hasshared it with the SHPC community. An Altar in theWorld has provided me with a framework to focus onGod's gifts in my life, and sharing these gifts with oth-ers. While I haven't been able to make many of the class-es due to my travel schedule, the ones that I have madehave brought me great peace and inspiration. I amgrateful to SHPC for offering this to our community."—Deb

Summer Study Options

great history relates to us and our relationshipwith God, as well as our responsibility to live asdisciples to Him. For me, this study enabled meto see the "big picture" that has eluded me inprevious Bible study classes. As particular vers-es are used in our worship services, I feel adeeper understanding of the passages because Ican tie it into a much larger context than I couldbefore.

The study manual always focuses on how themessage relates to us and our discipleship. We

discuss the human con-dition that is the focusof each lesson, and thenhow we can respond as

disciples. I have never thought of myself as adisciple. This class has opened doors for me toconsider how to direct my efforts in life to be abetter servant of God. This was the message ofJesus Christ. He spread the word of the Lord andtaught us all to love one another. It is so simple, when I see the words written, and yet, it is sovery profound to take in…

Even before I finished with Disciple 1, I alreadymade a commitment to myself that I will takeDisciple 2, 3, and 4 in the coming years. Thankyou, Bob, for your insightful and patient leader-ship in this class.

I can see the“big picture.”

“My heart desires ‘thePeace that passes all under-standing.’ This year I madea conscious decision towholeheartedly pursue thatpeace by actively strength-ening my own mind-bodyconnection and integratinga practice of yoga and med-itation into my life, withthe belief that many east-ern practices understandthe need to connect themind and the body whenexercising both. But here'sthe thing. I'm not a particu-larly athletic person. I lovehiking and walks and beingoutside, but I didn't know if

I would like ‘an exerciseclass.’ Ever since my mas-tectomy I've known thatyoga’s stretching and holis-tic approach would help toheal both my mind and mybody. But I was reluctant tojoin a class with a focussolely on the physicality ofyoga. I wanted to learn thepractice. When I heardabout Jess' class and thebook, An Altar in the World,I just knew that learningyoga with an emphasis onChristian faith and recog-nizing the holy in every-thing would be the perfectintroduction for me, to theworld of yoga. And I wasright.”

The class was a perfect in-troduction to yoga and to

the ideas in An Altar in theWorld. The ideas in both

and space for peace." —Emi-ly

Worshipping Together: Family-StyleThis summer, our Elementary programming slowsdown as we prepare for next fall, and all of thefun events that take place that time of year.Beginning June 2nd on the William Cannoncampus, all Elementary children (graduatingKinders through 5th graders) will worship withtheir families in the Sanctuary. As we do that,we are deliberately creating worship experienc-es for the summer on both campuses that willengage folks of all ages. We want parents andkids to celebrate God’s Big Story together; tosing songs they know and love; to have opportu-nities both during worship and during the weekto discuss what they learn each Sunday.

During the school year, Elementary parents re-ceive weekly Parent Cue emails —information onthe upcoming Sunday’s Bible story and discussionpoints to share as a family. During the summer, these emails will continue as Take the LeadSummer Worship emails. These emails will in-

clude information about the up-coming Sunday’s worshipservice, so that parents canTake the Lead and beginthe Sunday morning discus-sion during the week. Weknow that parents arethe most important influence intheir children’s lives, so we want to give you thetools to help your kids engage in worship.

During the school year, our Elementary childrenparticipate in a Large Group worship experienceled by adults that involves fellowship, praise, and study. During the summer, Elementary chil-dren will become part of the worship experi-ence, through liturgy and some fun videos inwhich they will star.

Please join us on Sundays in June, July and Au-gust for worship: family-style!

Care & Bible Fun for Infants through Preschool-aged children will continue all summer.

brodie news bitesEveryone’s a weiner… at the Buda Wiener Dog Races

On April 27th, the Brodie Bunchstepped out into the neighborhood tohelp the Buda Lion’s Club during thisyear’s Wiener Dog Races (theme: LesWienerables).
