Growing HopeMy husband and I started "Phase

I've got additionalvegetables, a cutting garden, herbs, and an assortment of xeriscapeplants planned for those phases. Our backyard will be a veritableparadise when we're finished.

We hope so, anyway. I'll keepyou posted.

This exercise in backyard garden-ing has made me think about

the gardening we do in our hearts.I'm not sure I'm visiting that gardenenough. How about you? Do youfind that some things have a way oftaking root there and hanging on?Are these things fruits of the spiritor something else? I trust you allenough to tell you that in my heart,I find a mixture of both. However, one fruit that remains constant inmy heart is HOPE. I haven't en-countered anything yet that thisfruit cannot overtake. Grief anddespair may attempt to take root inour hearts, but so does HOPE. Itweakens the roots of pain, snaps

the ties of sorrow and frustrationand allows our hearts to grow, toreach out and touch the sunlight ofJoy. HOPE springs up from ourfaith in God's love, from our knowl-edge of the words of those whocame before us, "Guide me in yourtruth and teach me, for you areGod my Savior, and my HOPE is inyou all day long." (Ps. 25: 5, NIV)

In our children's programming, weteach a gathering phrase that lets

the kiddos know we're ready to be-gin. The adults say, "God is good!"and the children respond with, "Allthe time!" It is a phrase crafted outof faith, but also out of HOPE.Funny how the simple things weteach our children are things ofwhich we desperately need to bereminded. We say it "loudand proud" when things are goingwell, and with firmness and convic-tion—almost with a growl againstdoubt and anxiety—when things arenot.

God is Good. All the Time.

I hope that as we celebrate the lifeof Jesus and His resurrection this

Big Plans and Where We’re HeadingIn November the session finalized the five -yearplan to move our ministry to become one churchin three locations. There have been a greatmany things happening behind the scenes tobring about this vision and a tentative calendarhas been established to put feet to the plan.

The important date for us is September 2012 .This is the month we have set as the launch ofthe south location for our third worship service. With that in mind, we have three critical actionsthat will help us launch successfully. The first isthe creation of a capital campaign to help raisethe resources to launch the new site. Second isthe creation of a launch team made up of peoplefrom our church who will help pioneer this newwork. Third is the hiring of a campus pastor forthe new site.

We absolutely will be sharing information aboutthese and other plans with you asthey become available. Untilthen, please be praying for ourcongregation, its work and ourleadership.

People are talking...

Here's what people say after taking DiscipleBible Study classes:

"It's the first time I've ever read through thewhole Bible. I never realized how connected thestory is from start to finish even with all thedifferent types of literature."

"I didn't really think I could understand the Biblebut now I can hear God talking to me throughthe scripture I read."

"I started the class as an intellectual exercisebut found that my heart and spirit were thethings that really grew."

"I finally have an understanding of the overviewof biblical history to understandthings when Larry refers tothem in sermons."

"The hymns we sing in worshiphave become so much moremeaningful to me. I love onSunday mornings that I can spotthe biblical references in the hymns and under-stand the theology they are expressing."

"I went through a really tough time in my lifethis year and it was the fellowship of close Chris-tian friends that really pulled me through."

"I came from a church where the Old Testamentwasn't really taught. I never realized how muchthe New Testament depends on and grows out ofthe Old."

"I tried before to read and study the Bible bymyself but I was amazed every week by what Ilearned in discussions with others. There were somany different life perspectives that enrichedmy understanding and uncovered other layers ofmeaning."

"We didn't just study. We actually began to en-courage each other in our discipleship. We didsome mission projects as a group which broughtus even closer together."

"It meant so much to me to know that the otherswere praying for me each week and my ownprayer life was strengthened by praying regularlyfor them."

"I thought after my first Disciple class that Iwanted to take a break from study the next yearbut then I found that during the summer I feltkind of lost without regular Bible reading anddiscussion. The second year has been even bet-ter!"

Disciple is a nine-month, September to May,Bible study that meets for two hours each

week for thought-provoking group discussions onchallenging scripture readings and study manualquestions. Though there is a great deal of studyinvolved, the heart of this program is abouttransformation rather than just information. Par-ticipants learn how to live their lives as disci-ples.

It's time to start thinking about signing up forthe 2011-2012 set of classes. Classes are led

by trained lay leaders or ministers so we mustknow how many people are interested in takingclasses in September in order to train leadersthis summer.

There are four separate studies. The first oneis an overview of about 70% of the Bible. It is

strongly suggested that you take this Disciple 1class before taking any of the upper level class-es that dig more specifically into certain booksof the Bible. For example, Disciple 2 looks indepth at Genesis, Exodus, Luke, and Acts.

For more information, contact Bob Beardslee [email protected] or Sherry Smith [email protected]. Putting your name on the "in-terested" list will let us know which classes andtimes to offer in the fall.

“I tried before to read and study the Bible bymyself but I was amazed every week by what Ilearned in discussions with others.”

Recent AdditionsThe library has purchasedsome exciting new titles, thanks to wonderful rec-ommendations fromchurch members. Stopby and check out these new books:230 YAN What Good Is God? In Search of a Faith

that Matters - Popular religious writer PhilipYancey tells of his search, personal andprofessional, to answer questions of faith in aworld often violent and unfair. The results are a"compelling reading experience, as well asfirsthand evidence that faith really does make adifference, even when belief is severely tested."

248.4 STO The Radical Disciple - In the last book bythe leading evangelical churchman of thetwentieth century, John Stott opens up what itmeans at root to be a follower of Jesus. Heexplores eight aspects of Christian discipleshipwhich are too often neglected and yet deserve tobe taken seriously.

204.4 BIE Decision-making and SpiritualDiscernment - While traditional religiouslanguage speaks of finding "God's will," theapproach in this book is that we are activeparticipants, co-creators with the Divine inshaping our lives. Drawing on twenty-five yearsof experience as a psychologist and fifteen yearsof experience as a spiritual director, Nancy L.Bieber presents three essential aspects of Spirit-led decision-making.

248.5 LIT How to Give Away Your Faith - "So youwant to witness; I did too, but I didn't have a clueabout how to do it without stubbing my toe in theprocess." So begins the book that has helpedmore than a million people give their faith toothers. Paul Little's humor and down-to-earthapproach help show how friendly and naturalevangelism can really be. "Impossible" you maysay. "I just don't know what I'd tell people. Whatif I can't answer their questions? What if theythink I'm just strange?" Paul Little has facedthese same fears and found effective and biblicalways to overcome them.

psst, psst, psst, sabbatical. Sabbatical for him? It’s true! The session has granted Pastor Mike a three-month sabbatical for him to take amuch needed rest. A sabbatical is a time of reflection, recharging and renewal of faith. You may not know this (it may be more than you wanted to know!) but Pastor Mike hasbeen at SHPC for these last 8... almost 9!... years, living and breathing in the drama- andemotion-filled world of student ministry as well being a guiding voice for all of our missionactivities. Prior to coming to SHPC, Mike had worked for almost 20 years with students inCalifornia. He hopes to take this time (from July to mid-August and from mid-Novemberthrough December) to learn some new rhythms of life and recharge on the beaches wherehe grew up. He will also be attending a preaching conference or two, learning some newhigh-tech worship skills and take his family on a yet-to-be-determined trip. Please be pray-ing for him and his family as they prepare for this gracious time. They are very excited andthankful for this opportunity!

Caring Forever Endowment Fund

The Work Must Go On, So The Search Is On!submitted by Deb Erlanson, Endowment Committee

Spring is on us, with all the family and churchactivities that this season of renewal brings. Weare excited that it is time to seek nominationsfor The Caring Forever 2011 Endowment FundAward.

We are delighted to be able to give a monetaryaward of $1,500 this year thanks to contribu-tions and earnings. The award is especially im-portant as it represents how many organizationsand individuals continue their good works de-spite tight budgets.

That's where you, the congregation, can help.We need YOU to tell us who it should go to.Past awards have been made for work with thehomeless, mission work in Cuba, disaster reliefwork, education and campus ministry work, andother efforts to glorify God and help those inneed. Perhaps you know someone who could usethe award for a special mission or educationproject?

There's a nomination form at the bottom of thispage. When you've completed it, look for the

Caring Forever Endowment Fund tree in thenarthex. There's a box there for you to put yourcompleted nomination in, or you can put it inthe Endowment Fund mail box in the church of-fice. Just be sure to get your nomination in bySunday, April 17th. All nominations will be re-viewed by a Task Force appointed by the Ses-sion, and the Caring Forever 2011 Award will bepresented in church on Mother's Day, Sunday May8th.

Caring Forever awards come only from the earn-ings of the Endowment Fund or from special "an-gel gifts" when the earnings need a little lift. The principal of the Fund — your contributions —are never spent. They stay in the Fund, continu-ing to earn even more to be used for awards inyears to come.

Have questions? Just ask an Endowment Commit-tee member (Gaston Broyles, Deb Erlanson, Bea-man Floyd, Marilyn Wade, or Doug Wilkins).

CARING FOREVER 2011 AWARD NOMINATION FORM

I nominate the following for the Caring Forever 2011 award:

I believe the award is deserved for the following reasons:

Submitted by: _____________________________ Telephone Number _________________Nominees cannot be a member of SHPC and must use the award for mission, for education for a near-term project orfor an on-going project that needs additional funding. The award is not to be used as a reward for past projects oractions. A Task Force appointed by the Session will review nominations and make a recommendation to the Sessionwhich will then make the final decision.
