Ultimately our prayer is that, in becomingONE church with multiple sites, it will moti-

vate ALL of us to INVITE others to church & intoa life-giving relationship with God in JesusChrist. We pray that God will shape us into acommunity that lives out the love and grace ofJesus in tangible ways.

I look forward to seeing you and your neigh-bors, friends, relatives, co-workers at both

campuses when the doors are open and Godshows up.

In Christ,

What’s happeningwith our Praise forthe Past, Faith forthe Future:

The Wm Cannon campus remodel is progressingat a rapid pace. The work on the classroom ar-ea of the main building is nearly complete. It ison schedule to be done in time for the teachersto get ready for the fall kickoff of Sundaymorning classes and weekday Preschool. Thework in the Sanctuary and other non-classroomareas of the building has been delayed becauseof the backlog of building permits with the Cityof Austin. As soon as that permit is issued, workwill restart in those areas, too. Outside land-scaping has been underway— new walkways andfront patio area, a new wall outside the sanctu-ary… and one for our recycling container. Light-ing, planting and new signs, including a new bigsign at the Wm Cannon/McCarty Ln corner, arestill in progress.

As you may recall from Larry’s comments inworship a few weeks ago, we had to cut backthe scope of work on the terrace outside theSanctuary for budgetary reasons. The currentplan (but still subject to change due to the per-mit process) is to only construct a storage roomoutside the current right rear exit doors and

Children’s Ministry NewsTELL ME ABOUTKIDSTUF!For those of you whohear us talk about "Kid-Stuf" and have won-dered what it's all about, here's a brief bio to helpyou out:

What IS KidStuf?KidStuf is a monthly family gathering time wherekids and parents learn together about God's BigIdeas! It's a 45-minute, fun, digital interactiveexperience designed for families that typicallytakes place on the 2nd Wednesday of eachmonth.

Why does KidStuf exist?KidStuf exists to partner with parents. We be-lieve that parents are ultimately responsiblefor the spiritual development of their children(Deuteronomy 6:4-9). We also recognize thatparents have a whole lot more time with theirkids than anyone at church. In fact, each yearkids spend about 3,000 hours with their parentsversus the 40 or so that they will spend attend-ing church on Sunday. As a result, no one hasmore influence over a child than his or her par-ent. Because of this, we believe that what hap-pens at home is more important than whathappens at church. We believe that it is our roleto partner with parents by providing a plan thatwill give them the tools they need to lead theirkids spiritually. This plan is launched the firstSunday of each month at UpStreet (our Sundaymorning program for elementary age children),then built upon the rest of the month with Kid-Stuf, KidStuf Take-Out and KidStuf Online.

What is the KidStuf Take-Out?The KidStuf Take-Out is a creative applicationtool designed to assist and equip families as theyapply the Big Idea in their home, all month long.We give it to all children who attend KidStufeach month.

What's the Big Idea? The Big Idea is something that every parentwants their kid to learn. We would like to saythat we came up with these ideas first, but ac-tually, they are God's Big Ideas, such as self-

control, honesty, patience, and gratitude. There is a different Big Idea each monththat is the over-riding theme in KidStufand UpStreet. Every element of KidStufand UpStreet is centered on the Big Idea.

(September’s Big Idea? RESPECT.)

Who should attend KidStuf?Kids (Kindergarten through 4th grade) AND theirparents should come together. 5th graders arealso welcome, but most choose to attend theTRUE tween program with Pastor Mike duringthis same time.

How does KidStuf partner with Up-Street?These two environments are synched together toprovide the best experience possible for yourfamily! KidStuf is a monthly, shared experiencefor families that helps explain the Big Idea forthe month… the same Big Idea that the kids arelearning in UpStreet. So when a kid and his fami-ly go to both — WOW! KidStuf Online and KidStufTake-Out work alongside KidStuf to motivate, equip, and inspire PARENTS to apply the Big Ideaat home all month long!

UpStreet happens every Sunday morning at both9:30 and 11:00 a.m. It is where kids meet insmall groups with other kids their age and con-nect with an adult small group leader. Eachweek they are taught a different Bottom Lineand Bible story that focuses on a different as-pect of the Big Idea.

When is KidStuf? The 2012-2013 dates are:

September 12th :: October 10th :: November14th :: December 12th :: February 6th † ::

March 6th ‡ :: April 10th :: May 8th

As always, our Club H2O camp-ers spent a week full of water, water, water, and... more wa-ter! About 50 of us in all doveinto Rock 'N River, GarrisonPool, Lake LBJ, Lakeway Pooland ZDT's Amusement Park.Smiles were everywhere, friendships were made and re-newed and laughter was in theair! But more importantly, wealso took a deep dive into God'sWord. This year, using SimonPeter as our example, we

looked at how we can all beZAPPED by God's love and howwe'll never know who we aredesigned to be until we learnhow to plug into God’s power, grace and love. When we learnthis, our lives become ZAPPEDand are changed forever, be-

cause getting ZAPPED by God'slove changes the way we think, the way we treat others and thechoices we make.

In small groups, we talkedabout all of these things. Weasked what we can learn fromPeter's call and discipleship ex-

periences and how his exampleof following Jesus might applyto our lives today. It may seemlike a tall order for 4th, 5th and6th graders, but they rose tothe challenge and impressedthe leadership team with theirparticipation, their thoughtful-

ness and their ability to con-nect the dots!

Look all around at the amazingfun we had while gettingZAPPED!

All the Women’s Guild greets you.

This letter came with a gift to SHPC of a spoonof our own like the Guild uses to share out dailyfood rations during famine times. The spoon ishandmade, with a bowl about 4 inches in diam-eter and a small handle. A true summer to rememberThis has been a summer full of life-changingencounters with Jesus.

All these summertime words come straight fromthe hearts of the students who lived them.

This summer some of us highschool kids got the chance

to go to a Student LeadershipConference in Azusa, Califor-nia. The conference was reallyenlightening; it taught me howto be a better leader. It taughtme that to be a leader I have tobe a servant, to lead I need tolisten to others, not just hearthem. Another thing that myeyes were opened to is that, while there is a lot of broken-ness in the world, and a lot ofmission fields to cover, I canstart here in Austin. I can startin my high school, talking topeople that don’t know Christ, people that are searching forsomething to fill the hole in

their heart. I can become aleader on my campus by realiz-ing that I can’t limit who I canreach, and that I’m not betterthan anyone else.

During the conference we gotthe chance to do leadership

activities, the first one beingrather frustrating. We had ahard time listening to each oth-er and working together, and inthe end we walked away fromthe activity frustrated at eachother and, for me, at myself. For the second leadership activ-ity we did, we had to work ingroups to find solutions toworld problems like clean waterand sanitation. This time we

were able to listen to each oth-er better and work well togeth-er. By the end of the activitywe all felt better about howwe did. The idea that we arebetter together, and we can’tdo it on our own, really becamea reality, for me and the wholegroup. Something that God re-ally made me realize is that Iam accepted by him no matterwhat lies I’m told by otherpeople or the lies I tell myself.Because Jesus loves me as I am,but refuses to leave me broken.

The whole trip really changedme, and the way I look at

other people and the world.

Fun in the Son, Part One

My experience at Fun in the Son Experience was amazing! Ihave really been bad about going to church and youth

group because I have been so busy! So I was really excited tocome to Fun in the Son. I am so happy that I went it was sucha life changing experience. I feel like I am so much closer toGod and I do not ever want to lose that again, I am really go-ing to start trying to come to church more after I get homefrom vacation in 2 weeks. I wish I could just go back to campagain! It was so much fun and I feel so lucky to have gone.AndI know that God took me there for a reason. I can't wait tokeep growing in my faith because I know it's just the begin-ning and I am so excited! I really hope we go next year be-cause I would go back in a heartbeat!

More Fun in the Son

Pastor Mike and Shepherd of the Hills- I wanted to thankyou so incredibly much for giving me and the other kids

the opportunity to go to Fun in the Son. This was a life-changing week for me. I am usually the person that feels likean outsider when it comes to my faith with God. But thisweek has changed my life. On Tuesday night, I fully devotedmy life to Jesus Christ, and allowed him to take my life fullyinto his hands. I worshipped with the Jason Johnson Band ev-ery night, I went and stood at the front of the stage and justput my hands up and worshipped... but all of that included,as I got in my mom's car today leaving SHPC, I broke down intears, because I knew that it was truly over and that wasawful. I cry typing this, because Fun In the Son truly gave mea relationship with Jesus Christ as my Savior. So I ask with allof my heart - as you plan next summer, plan on coming toFun in the Son on South Padre Island. It was so life-changingand if I was given the chance to go back right now, I would! Iwish this camp was a month long. So I thank you so much! Itwas truly the best week in my entire life, and I wish it didn'thave to end.

One of the biggest things that high-schoolersstruggle with is acceptance. So many peo-

ple spend so much time getting ready just toimpress a person or a group of people. This wasone of the things that stood out to me the most.I know I have caught myself several times wor-rying about what other people think if me, evenwith the "popular kids" sometimes. By going tothe Student Leadership Conference, I under-stood that I am accepted by God not matterwhat. I don't need to impress him or change my-self for him. By being free from the worries ofhow other people see me I had more fun hang-ing out in big groups, and talking to other peo-ple was so much easier for me to do. By doingthis, the worship songs instantly became myfavorite part about the trip. I no longer worried

what people would think if I sang louder or evendanced a little. I got so much more out of wor-ship by caring less of what other people thoughtof me.

I also know that we are all in the process ofbecoming something amazing. God gave us all

unique qualities so we could lead and make adifference in the name of the Lord. This triphelped me realize that I do want to make a dif-ference at my high school and I do want to helpother people. I would like to see more peoplegoing to God, being open about their beliefs, and being able to grow. In order to make a dif-ference, I cannot limit who I reach out to. Inhigh school there are so many different groupsof people. I realized that if I don't reach out andtalk to people who I don't usual associate with, Iam the one preventing the change. Reachingout to people in other groups can also build newfriendships and help emotionally heal other peo-ple. Another important thing I learned is to notthink that I am better than everyone else. Thismeans that God sees me equally with everyoneelse, even the people who aren't the most Godlyor faithful. There are only 2 years left for me inhigh school. I now know that I can make a dif-ference, even by inviting a few people to YouthGroup or even just to sit down and talk aboutmy faith and share the amazing things God hasdone for me.

By being free from the worries...

THE GREAT ESCAPEMy experience at Great Escape was fan-tastic! The people were fun the gameswere outgoing, but the best thing wason Thursday night. We were sitting out-side , my friends and I were crying. Ithink God was speaking to the peoplearound me and had given us all forgive-ness. This is the best thing for me toget from anyone! Especially God. Thelast day there was a crud war. Whichthe leaders threw crud at us. And atthe end we got cleaned. I felt like thatwas God cleaning us for whatever andpreparing us for what was coming next.

true parentsOur strategy for developingyour son or daughter into amature follower of Jesus ishighly dependent on an veryimportant partnership with youas a parent. We believe thattwo influences combined intheir goal and purpose are bet-ter than two separate influenc-es, like this:

“What if church leaders andparents synchronized their ef-forts to fuel wonder, discoveryand passion in the next gener-ation?”

By combining the critical influ-ences of the light of the church

(yellow) and the love of thefamily (red), the ORANGEStrategy shows a generationwho God is more effectivelythan either could alone.

From preschool to college, ourstrategy draws on the elementsof wonder, discovery and pas-sion, infusing them into chil-dren, students and youngadults. Why? To see God forwho he is, to help young peo-ple see themselves the wayGod sees them, so that theycan love others the way Goddoes.

true parent gatheringsWe know the joys and thestruggles of being a parent totween to young adult. From"Where did my baby go?" to"When are they ever going toleave?!" These are the cries of

parents today. True parentgathering provides a monthlyshot of inspiration and rela-tionship to encourage you aswe grow as parents together.True parent gatherings re-volve around teaching familiesthe core truths of our studentministry and our ORANGE strat-egy so that we might be evenmore successful with you sonor daughter. True parent gath-erings are also built arounddeveloping healthy adult non-work relationships. When youattend, you will have a blastand go home with tools to helpyou better connect with yourstudent as well as inspired togrow your faith that muchmore.

What's more exciting thanfinding a shady parking spotat H-E-B in August? Singingwith the choir for SHPC'sannual Christmas Cantata!

This year we'll "Celebrate the Season" with JoelRaney's cantata of the same name. Contempo-rary and upbeat, this superb cantata celebratesthe excitement, joy and true meaning of theChristmas season. Raney retells the Christmasstory through a unique partnering of creative, original songs with traditional carols. Most of theoriginals incorporate strains from traditional car-ols, weaving a tapestry with just enough famil-iarity to warm our hearts and with enoughoriginality to surprise our ears and lift our spir-its. The styles he uses range from classical, tojazz and everything in between.

Both Brodie and William Cannon campuses areinvited to participate as we'll be offering thecantata at both campuses in December. Re-hearsals begin in September. Contact our choirdirector, Zack Uzzle ( [email protected] ), for moredetails.

Sunday Saturday of Service!75 folks showed up to help with the workat the Burke’s Ranch/Pathfinder BoysRanch in Driftwood for our August 4th

“Saturday of Service.” Lots of folks from Presbyterianchurches in Austin and Dripping Springs helped outside —

building picnic tables, cutting down deadtrees, and renovatingthe garden area —while many of the la-dies worked hard inside— washing, drying, folding, and sorting donated clothing. We had a nice breezethat morning to help contend with the heat, but we finished upjust before noon before things got too hot outside. Had a greattime meeting and working with some great folks. —Donn LeVie

Ruth Ann Widner-Floto writes:

Having seen the need for ourselves and being inspired by theBurke Center's vision, several of us at SHPC are interested in

establishing an on-going relationship to ensure that these boys receive the love and care that Godcalls us to provide. We are also keenly aware that with the Burke Center for Youth being just upthe road, many of you would love to help, too.

There are three ways you and your families can help: ON-GOING SERVICE || ONE TIME PROJECTS|| DONATE ITEMS. For more details (lots more!) visit members.shpc.org/mission/burkecenter.php

We hope that you will prayerfully consider helping with the above-mentioned projects. We are inthe beginning phases of planning and would love to hear from you if you have an interest in help-ing. Please contact Ruth Ann (512-740-2379 / [email protected] ) or Carl (512-484-2444 /[email protected] ) to volunteer or further discuss our work with the Burke Center for Youth.

Online Giving and Giving ReportsOur new membership system allows us toaccept both one-time and scheduled on-line gifts to the General Operating Bud-get or the Praise for the Past, Faith forthe Future campaign. This would be agreat way to keep your pledges up todate during the summer, even if you areaway for a while.

The system also lets you get your own, on-de-mand printout of your year-to-date giving. Youcan go directly to http://giving.shpc.org, ornavigate there from Members > Resources. Reg-

ister one time for an account if you haven't al-ready (click the 'sign-up' link) and followthe directions to confirm your identity toaccess the system.

We are still completing the migration ofdata from our old system, so some giftsmade before April 1st may not show up ormay show up incorrectly. We are workingto correct them, but if you let us know

when you find a problem, we can get to it thatmuch quicker for you. Just drop a note to Hollyat [email protected].
