I immediately thought, “we’re going to have a smiting-with-a-lightning- bolt situation if I say, ‘no,’” so I told Britta I didn’t need to take time to pray about it. Her request wasn’t so much a question as it was a crystal-clear answer to the question I had already offered up to God. Looking back over the last several years, it’s not at all difficult to see how my own spiritual development has deepened as I have given more of my time, my sweat and my heart to the church. God has rewarded my commitment with not only deeper spiritual connection with Christ, but also deeper relationships with those sitting next to me in worship. God has also rewarded me with steadier feet and a family of faith surrounding me in my own times of struggle. Now as a single mom, I see my own teenage daughter sinking deep roots in her faith, guided by other volunteers who have said, “yes,” to God’s call to be the church for her.

WE ARE THE CHURCHBy Mary Aversa

I don’t usually write the articles in The Shepherd’s Watch; I’m typically our newsletter’s editor. More often than not over the years, Larry Coulter has written the lead article you’ve read on the front page.

This month, however, marks the beginning of a new season in the life of our church, and for me, that’s a reminder that God often calls us to fill different shoes in times of change. So this month, I’m both author and editor.

As I consider the many ways I hope we all lean into this change, I can’t help but recall a time years ago when I was first called to serve in a big and unexpected way at Shepherd of the Hills. It was 2006, and I was in a women’s Bible study that Pastor Britta was also participating in.

We were discussing spiritual gifts. Our assignment for the week was to pray for God to reveal our particular spiritual gifts and how God could use those to benefit the church. I had been committed in my prayer that week, intently

meditating on my study, asking the question, “How would you use me, Lord?” and listening for God’s guidance.

One evening as I prayed, the sense came over me that I would simply know the opportunity when it came to me.

The very next evening, Britta called me at home to tell me that there was a new Children’s Ministry program called “UpStreet” starting soon, and she needed a large number of volunteers to get the program off the ground. She wanted to know if I would pray about being a 2nd grade leader.

I immediately thought, “we’re going to have a smiting-with-a-lightning-bolt situation if I say, ‘no,’” so I told Britta I didn’t need to take time to pray about it. Her request wasn’t so much a question as it was a crystal-clear answer to the question I had already offered up to God.

I had not really been able to see myself working in children’s ministry before, but having committed to Britta, I dug into the

curriculum, showed up on the first Sunday morning of UpStreet, and immediately fell in love with my group of kids and my co-volunteers. It turned out to be a fantastic experience.

This was my first significant contribution as a member of the SHPC family.

2 Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church

That’s what this boils down to. We—you and I and the people on your right and your left in worship, Life Group, youth group, fellowship and study—are Shepherd of the Hills.

The current change we’re faced with as Larry departs is both a challenge and an opportunity to step up and be the church. We have always been called to serve each other in one way or another. The opportunities right now are simply a little more obvious and necessary than they have been in the past.

When I joined Shepherd of the Hills more than a decade ago, I chose to throw my lot in with the congregation here, saying, “This is my church.” I invested even further with our 2nd graders and their families in 2006.

My UpStreet 2nd graders have continued growing and moving ahead (imagine!) and are currently in 10th grade. I’m still with them, now on Sunday nights at True. Last May as we were saying our goodbyes and congratulations to the 2014

high school graduates, one of my girls said to me, “Mary, you only have 3 more years before that’s us!” [**Choke back tears**] They’ve come to expect that I’ll be with them at their own graduation, and that expectation means they’ve invested in me too.

See, that’s what happens when you decide that you are the church. You choose to throw in your lot with the rest of us, and before you know it, your family of faith has invested in you too.

Tell Us Your Story!Do you have a “We Are The Church” story? It might be a story about a time when you were called

to be the church, or it might be a story about a time when Shepherd of the Hills invested in you or surrounded you or your family in a time of need. We’d love to have you share your experience. Send your story to [email protected]. Some stories may be published!

WE ARE THE CHURCHcontinued from page 1

Shepherd of the Hills has been faithful in our investments in our community, and there are so many times when God has taken what we have offered up to him and multiplied it.

When Children’s Ministry and Student Ministry changed many years ago to a small-group-centered model that required a huge number of volunteers, those volunteers stepped up, and our programs exploded. We have hundreds more children and youth connected and growing in their family of faith than we could have imagined back then.

When a multi-site vision emerged, Shepherd of the Hills gave generously to make that vision a reality, and we now have a thriving Brodie campus serving far South Austin, Kyle and Buda with an

energetic ministry. It’s once again Stewardship time, when we begin our financial planning for the year ahead. We would ask you

today to offer up two prayers. First, will you pray for our Stewardship Committee? They are volunteers who have said, “yes,” to serving SHPC in a unique and critical way, and we are so blessed to be guided by the talents of Mary Aversa, Georgia Crawley, Sara Jensen, Jason Sanchez and Holly Spink.

Second, will you pray about your family’s commitment of time, talent and treasure to SHPC for 2015? It will take our entire SHPC family praying together and working together to continue to grow our ministries next year. The work of our church has been made possible in the past through your generosity, and we hope to be able to continue on our path for many more years.

In the next weeks, you will receive more information about Stewardship, and you’ll hear more stories about how we’ve given and God has multiplied. We hope you will

Roll Up Those Sleeves!All Church Work Day October 11th, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Our William Cannon Campus has several areas that NEED some TLC, and we’re going to work together to show the campus some love on October 12th from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m..

We will divide tasks into morning tasks and afternoon tasks, and we will have work that can be done by any family member elementary aged or older.

Morning tasks will focus on the decks and landscaping, and afternoon tasks will take us mostly indoors with some light repairs, sprucing up and furniture cleaning.

Helpful tools to bring if you can:• Wheelbarrow• Shovels, rakes and gardening tools• Cordless drill & bits, hammer, other basic hand tools• Rags• Work gloves and rubber glovesMake sure to clearly label any tools you bring from home so you

can make sure you take home the same materials you brought with you!

Looking for service hours for yourself or a group? This is a great opportunity! Contact Mary Aversa. 512.892.3580 or [email protected].

Property volunteers give their time and talents to fix and improve our properties. Do you think you could guess how much money they save us every year? How about $4,000 at Brodie as our beautiful deck and sidewalk were built last spring? $5000 or more in repairs to the portables at William Cannon over the last year? Those are astounding figures, and those are just cost savings from two big projects.

Our property volunteers also respond to leaky faucets, jammed gates, fallen tree limbs, and more all year ‘round. We are so very blessed these folks in the SHPC family!

Interested in being a property volunteer? Contact Mary Aversa in the church office. [email protected]

On October 5th, bring a side dish or dessert to share, and a chair or blanket to the Brodie field, and Join us for music, food and fun, as we say Thank You and Bon Voyage to Larry Coulter!

If you have a shade canopy, you’re welcome to bring that too! Fried Chicken provided. Questions? Email [email protected].

Going Publicby Mike Killeen

I’ve met some really amazing people in my life and I’ve encountered some people who are what I’d call a “Fixer-Upper for Christ”.

Let me be clear about this. I have made some major mistakes in my life, and looking back at those, I know I am absolutely a Fixer-Upper for Christ too. But when I go out into the world, I see people just like me who also Fixer-Uppers for Christ making some really bad and very public choices that are giving us Fixer-Uppers for Christ a bad rap.

For example:• In restaurants,

Christians have gained a reputation as bad tippers. When we go to eat, we must be generous not stingy with the people serving us.

• I see lots of Jesus fish on the bumpers of cars moving down the road at dangerous speeds, and I’ve seen the “one finger wave” on more than one occasion from people who have just left church parking lots. When we’re on the road, we have to remember to be generous with our patience and consideration for our fellow drivers.

• I’ve seen Internet conversations in which Christians use their faith as a weapon against another person’s self-worth. When we enter the world of the Internet we should not leave our faith behind, but we must also use our words compassionately. People cannot be bullied into following Jesus (as far as I know).

In the world of social media we have to remember that MANY people may be reading our posts, and the negative things we say could be very hurtful. Remember to love first. While it may be easy to be

anonymous online, God always knows what you type, watch and listen to. Scripture urges us to run from temptations and not toward them, and these days, this is never more important than it is in the vast and exceedingly public world of the Internet.

When it comes to language remember that the tongue is very difficult, but not impossible, to control. What, how, and to whom we choose to convey our message demonstrates a lot about our faith. Self-control is a virtue and a gift from God we should exercise liberally. Keep your words kind and Grandma-appropriate.

Perhaps most importantly, we must remember that all of us Fixer-Uppers must show the people around us the same grace that Christ shows us.

Let us each consider how might go public with our faith and correct some of the wrongs and missteps of those who went before us. Let us be known as Fixer-Uppers for Christ who openly

modeled the fruits of the spirit. Galatians 5:2222-23 But what happens when we live God’s

way? He brings gifts into our lives, much the same way that fruit appears in an orchard—things like affection for others, exuberance about life, serenity. We develop a willingness to stick with things, a sense of compassion in the heart, and a conviction that a basic holiness permeates things and people. We find ourselves involved in loyal commitments, not needing to force our way in life, able to marshal and direct our energies wisely.

23-24 Legalism is helpless in bringing this about; it only gets in the way. Among those who belong to Christ, everything connected with getting our own way and mindlessly responding to what everyone else calls necessities is killed off for good—crucified.

Did you know...Going public with your faith is one of the major catalysts that can move your spiritual life from one that is

Growing in Christ to one that is Connected to Christ and even to a life that is Christ-Centered.We often find it difficult or awkward to have a spiritual conversation with friends, family members or coworkers

who are not public with a faith of their own, but consider how you con deepen your relationship with Christ by being open to and maybe even intentional about those conversations.

MISSION

Tee off for Manos!Get ready to tee off for a good

cause, as Manos de Cristo hosts its fourth annual Charity Golf Classic, this year presented by Professional Janitorial Service, on Friday, October 24 at Falconhead Golf Club in Lakeway.

With a non-stop afternoon of fun, golfers are treated to a packed day that includes a chance to play 18 holes of golf at Falconhead. The event also includes exciting golf challenges, an opportunity to mingle with business leaders, non-stop snacks and beverages on and off the course, breakfast and a BBQ lunch.

The four-person scramble will kick off at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start, meaning each team will tee off simultaneously from a different hole. Each golfer will be able to purchase up to two mulligans (do-overs) they can hold in reserve if they make a mistake. Golfers can also purchase a Headstart Hole to start 100 yards closer on Hole 9. The tournament will be scored using the Peoria Scoring System, making the playing field quite level!

Whether an experienced golfer or a novice, you won't want to miss out on the fun and excitement of

this important fundraiser, which includes fabulous golf, fantastic food, raffle and silent auction prizes, and awards.

Last year's tournament raised nearly $35,000 for Manos de Cristo's programs and services, helping nearly 15,000 low-income children and families. We know even more can be raised this year with your help. Have fun – do good!

Individual, team and sponsorship opportunities are available. Questions? Please contact Diane Riehs at [email protected] or (512) 628-4203.

Each winter, Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian teams with other area churches at Central Presbyterian Church to take turns during the very coldest nights of the year to help care for and feed homeless women in downtown Austin.

Currently, our night to be on-deck is Thursday night. This could be two times this winter, nine times, or none at all! We need volunteers to spend the night and cook dinner and breakfast. A Freeze Night Coordinator will maintain the list of volunteers and contact them when we are called to lead Freeze Night.

Fall Faith BuildSHPC members turned out for the Fall Faith Build on

September 6th and 13th to help the Lopez family get a little closer to their dream of home ownership.

The September 6th build day was hot and humid with triple digit temperatures, and just one week later was a record-breaking cool, rainy day. That didn’t stop our committed volunteers from working side-by-side with Barbara and Jorge Lopez to raise the walls and place the trusses of their home.

Our final group build day is November 1st from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.. To sign up, contact Ben Boehman at [email protected].

Meet the Lopez FamilyThe future residents of the Fall Faith Build home are the Lopez family.Jorge and Barbara Lopez met in Austin Texas in 1998 while Jorge was

living in Texas temporarily from Colombia to study. After falling in love, Jorge married Barbara and decided to pursue his dreams in the U.S.A. Now, 15 years later, they have four children, Jennifer (13), Yeshua (5), Andrew (4) and Gabriel (2). Barbara left school to take care of her children but has been working as a collection agent for the past three years, while Jorge is completing his degree. He is currently studying Divinity at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. He graduates in December 2014 and looks forward to serving the community as a minister as he did back in Colombia.

These Children Need YOU!Teachers at Williams Elementary have referred

more students to Kids Hope than we have mentors, and this is your chance to get involved! Make a decision to step into an at-risk child’s life and make a difference. It only takes one hour a week to make a significant impact on the course of their life. Here are just a few of the kids who have been referred:• A 1st grade girl who is helpful to others but

has had a rough home life and needs positive, consistent and supportive role models, plus academic help in reading and math

• A 1st grade boy who is sweet and kind to others but struggles with self-esteem in school and social situations

• A 1st grade girl is a good friend to others but can get distracted easily in school and needs one-on-one guidance in reading and math

• A kind, sweet kindergartner who is new to school and is behind in the basics – colors, fine motor skills, language – and needs 1 on 1 support and care

• An expressive, smart 5th grade girl who is struggling at home and does not speak with peers. She

needs guidance and support to build confidence and self-esteem

• A 1st grade boy who has already been in three elementary schools and needs focused attention and support

These are children who need a caring, faithful adult to spend one hour a week letting them know that they matter. This hour

is spent reading, playing games, talking or playing outside. These kids can be forever impacted by the knowledge that an adult

cares enough to spend time with them each week, and the reading level improvement can have a significant effect on dropout rates in

high school. Please note that we would LOVE to have men mentor boys and be a positive male role model in their lives!

Mentoring is something that can be done during the work day, and most companies are

very supportive of this type of volunteer activity. We provide mentor training so you are fully

prepared as you begin this relationship with the student. Please call Karen Johnson at (512) 698-9183 or email [email protected] for more information.

If you are interested in hosting a trunk or helping with the set-up and organization of this special event, please contact Chris Gordon. [email protected]

Preschool NewsOn September 3rd the new school year got off to a great start for our

teachers and children at SHPC. With a warm welcome from teachers and staff, the kids were able to jump right into our Sensational Me and Sensational Families units, where they can share with new friends the wonderful qualities of both themselves as individuals and their family units. During this first month of school, the children spent chapel time learning about the Story of Creation and Noah, as well as bible memory verse: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the Earth.” Genesis 1:1

We also have some exciting news to share regarding new playground equipment! With our first successful summer program offered this year, we were able to raise funds towards purchasing a new Discovery Cave climbing structure for our kids to enjoy! With volunteer help, we anticipate having the new equipment installed by mid October. We can't wait to see the kids enjoying their new structure!

CASTING CALL!Big Story LIVE! is our 45-minute, rip-roaring, high-energy family

experience that incorporates the lessons from UpStreet—our Sunday morning programming for school-age kids—with fun, family themes. This

keeps parents "in the know" as we journey through a year of life together. These are stage productions requiring prop masters, set designers, tech crews,

and actors! If your toe starts tapping when you hear the Overture…if you love making scenes come to life…if you are "ready for your close-up," please join us for this season's kick-off party on Friday, October 3rd at the home of Britta & Glenn Dukes. Dinner will be served while we plan this year's productions. Need to bring the kids? No worries: we'll have a pajama party complete with pizza and movies for them upstairs! Please RSVP to Chris Gordon or Britta Dukes for more details.

NEW STUDY FOR WOMEN ON SUNDAY MORNINGS!OCTOBER 12 – NOVEMBER 16, 11:00 a.m., Wm Canon Room 9

LET. IT. GO. How to Stop Running the Show & Start Walking in Faith

With so many things to do, tasks to complete, schedules to organize and activities to maneuver, many women are wired to control. Sometimes, however, our efforts to control everything can exhaust us emotionally, physically and spiritually, as well as cause friction with family and friends.

This humorous, yet spiritually practical study will guide you to discover for yourself the freedom and reward of living a life “out of control,” in which you allow God to be seated in the rightful place in your life. Armed with relevant biblical and contemporary examples (both to emulate and to avoid), doable ideas, new thought patterns, and practical tools to implement, Let. It. Go. will gently lead you out of the land of over-control and into a place of quiet trust.

All women invited to join us for this time of study together. For more information or to register for this class, please contact Andrea Gerlach at [email protected].

Austin City Council District 8 Public Candidate Forum

Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church will host an Austin City Council District 8 candidate forum on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Wm Cannon campus sanctuary, 5226 West Wm Cannon Drive, which is only a few blocks from the population and geographic centers of the district. The event is open to the public.

The city council election on November 4, 2014 will be historic for several reasons: Most importantly, ten council members will be elected from single-member districts rather than at-large. Thus, each council member will represent a geographic district rather than the whole city, which increases fairness in representation and accountability of the elected representatives. The mayor will continue to be elected at-large. Second, the elections will be in November rather than in May, coinciding with numerous statewide executive and judicial contests, as well as judicial district, legislative and county electoral contests. Consequently, higher voter turnout rates are expected. Third, council members will serve staggered four-year terms rather than three-year terms. Since this is the first election using single-member districts, all ten council members will be elected. Finally, under the new system, the council members will be more dispersed geographically. In the past, most council members resided in a relatively small geographic area of the city, primarily west of MOPAC and north of Lady Bird Lake.

The candidates vying to represent District 8 are Rebecca Bray, Eliza May, Darrell Pierce, Ed Scruggs, and Ellen Troxclair. Covering most of Southwest Austin, District 8 contains more than 77,600 residents.

Attend the forum to meet the candidates, to hear about their visions for Southwest Austin, and to ask them about the municipal issues that concern you and your neighbors.

Men’s Book ClubBecause of IHN, the Men’s Book Club will not meet in November. The

next meeting will be on December 4, 2010 in Room 9 of the Wm Cannon Campus at 7 p.m. The book for December is Peter Stark’s Astoria: John Jacob Astor and Thomas Jefferson’s Lost Pacific Empire. Jim Black will lead the discussion. For more information, contact Stefan Haag by email ([email protected]) or phone (512-288-3479).
