The Citrus Game

The Citrus Game is a verysimple game I play once

a year with my students.Simply put, you try to splitan orange using your head."Ouch," I know but this sillygame has shown me there ismore than one way to peelan orange — and laugh whiledoing it.

Our church has adopted a verydifferent and highly effective

way of engaging our children, fromcradle to college, with the teach-ings of Jesus in ways that have aproven track record of success. Weare not talking about a new or bet-ter curriculum here; we have putour hearts and minds into a well-

crafted strate-gy: THE OR-ANGESTRATEGY.

The Orangestrategy

works at itscore with oneclear idea: twocombined influ-ences are stron-ger than twoseparate influ-ences. By com-bining thecritical influ-

ences of the light of the church andthe love of the family, the Orangestrategy synchronizes efforts andshows a generation who God is moreeffectively than either could alone.

THE ORANGE PLAN

By combining the influences ofthe church and family together

with one clear goal in mind, minis-try leaders and parents WORK TO-GETHER and aim at the sametargets with much higher success. From cradle to college, Orangedraws on the elements of wonder, discovery and passion, buildingthem into your children, your stu-dents and young adults. Why? Here

is the ultimate goal of every-thing we are doing... To seeGod for who He is, To helpyoung people see themselvesthe way God sees them, andfinally, to get out of the way sothat they can love others theway God does.

The key to our Orange successor failure really lies in your

hands. The children and studentministries actively live out andreach out to the families andfriends of SHPC. We need you tosee yourselves in partnershipwith the ministries your kids areinvolved with. We need you tosee yourselves as ORANGE PAR-ENTS. As active as you possiblycan be, as visible as you possi-bly can be, as networked andinformed as you possibly can

be. Let your faith show. Be-cause in order for Orange tohappen it requires both influ-ences together...Family + TheLove of Christ in the Church to= Orange Almost every seriesin our student ministry hasunique "parent cues" that wesend home via email to connectyou with what your students arelearning about. Give those cuesa look and then give it a try. Ithas to better than smashing anorange against your head! Thefaith conversations that stickthe best are the ones that hap-pen at home encouraged bywhat happened at church.

Reach Out Hon-duras Receives

Caring ForeverEndowmentAward

Two years ago, Alex andLaura Waits moved with theirfour children to the La Moskitiaregion of Honduras. They werefollowing God’s call to servethe Miskito people, an impover-ished, remote group living onHonduras’ coast. Their primarygoals were to bring the love ofChrist to three homes for or-phans and vulnerable children, help children with their school-ing, and secure scholarships forthose who needed to pursuefurther studies that are notavailable locally. They spendmuch of their time working oneon one with people, buildingrelationships, earning trust, and becoming more a part ofthat community. Over the past

year, the Waits, through ReachOut Honduras, have helped 17students go to a Christianboarding school, helped fouryoung women go to a Leader-ship University, assisted twomedical students with scholar-ships, secured sponsorships for19 children and one family, worked to improve facilities atthe children’s homes, fed over100 families at a Thanksgivingday feast, started Bible studiesand community gardens, andmore. They are also working toraise money to start a much-needed school right in thatcommunity. You can read moreabout them and their work ontheir website, atreachouthonduras.org.

Our Caring Forever Endowmentgrants are meant to honor thework of people, not in our con-gregation, who do excellentwork in missions and education.

The selection committeethought Reach Out Honduras’work fit very well with thegoals and priorities of ourchurch and the EndowmentFund, and made the decision toaward the grant to the Waitsfamily. Thank you for your gen-erosity, which makes it possiblefor us to support the work ofpeople like them!

Love In Motion Mission Trip

They will know us by our love... John 13:35

Families serving together is a beaut iful sight to see!We know that building missional hearts into our children is both a “caught” and a “taught” adven-ture of our Love being in Motion. Connecting those two ideas helped families serve well togetheron our Love in Motion Family Mission in Corpus Christi.

17 brave family members trav-eled to the distant city of Cor-pus Christi on June 21st to puttheir faith into action. And theydid it with their kids by theirside!

Taking your family to aplace where you know allof you are going to be abit out of their comfortzone is hard. Letting goof the creature comfortsof home is difficult. Beingcut off from most of our“tech” is painful… butworking side by side withour own children is amaz-ing, life changing andworth it 10 times over!

While on this retreat we workedat the 911 rescue mission runby (our now good friend!) TonyReyes. He shared incredible lifechange stories of how God hasstepped in time and time againto help and lead men back to asober and productive life. Atthe rescue mission we preppedthe clothing closet to receive anew roof. We also installed amuch needed pathway at theirAmistad location. Hard work

was made easier by seeing theenergy of our kids by our side.

The kids led the way,all the time, and had agreat time!

At the Corpus Food Bank wesorted more food than I knewever existed. Most of the donat-ed food came from large chainstores like H.E.B. and Walmart. We learned all about the fooddistribution system for those inneed in the Corpus and Valleyareas.

We will be going back soon.Don’t miss your chance to putyour love in motion with usnext time! —Pastor Mike

One thing I love about SHPCis its commitment to mis-

sion. Over the years, we havebeen involved with various localprojects like Angel Tree, IHN,and Manos de Cristo. As my kidsget older, I really want them toget more involved in helpingothers. We were able to partici-pate in one Sunday of servicewhere we helped a lady clearher yard which was in reallypoor shape. My girls, now 11and 9, enjoyed it, even thoughit was hard work. I even wentto Guatemala myself last sum-mer to see if it was a trip Icould bring the whole family tothis year. (We decided theywere still a little young forthat trip.) My husband, Jeff, and I really want to start a fam-ily tradition of doing a missiontrip each year, so even whenthe girls are in college or havefamilies of their own some day,we will still get together and doa trip. That was why I was soexcited when Mike put togetherthe family mission trip to Cor-pus Christi for the families withkids in Student Ministry.

It turned outthat Jeff and

my youngestdaughter, Kassidy,

had to stay home fora softball tourna-

ment, but myoldest daugh-

ter, Kendall, and I were able tohead to Corpus on a warmThursday afternoon in a caravanof families from SHPC. We ar-rived in Corpus Christi and westayed at a beautiful Presbyte-rian church a block from thebeach. It was a great buildingwith plenty of space for all ofus. The kids had a great timeexploring the building andhanging out while the adultsvisited. During the evening pro-gram, we all played games toget to know each other better. It was a great time to re-con-nect with old friends and meetsome new ones.

The work on Friday and Sat-urday was hard, but reward-

ing. We worked at a homelessshelter both days as well as afood bank distribution center, alternating between morningand afternoon shifts. At thehomeless shelter, some of theresidents shared their powerfuland humbling stories. At thefood bank, the kids (and adults)

got to sort food and see thingsthey had never seen before(sweet bread, anyone?) I sawKendall work really hard with-out complaining, actually enjoythe work and find ways to im-prove the process -! I also wit-nessed her running ahead andopening the door for some ofthe teens who were bringing inthe coolers after a hard day atwork.

During our downtime, someof us walked to the beach

and enjoyed the refreshing wa-ter as the kids played. We alsohad a great dinner the lastnight at a Mexican restaurantand I was amazed at how wellall the kids, both young andold, got along.

The theme of the trip was"Love in Motion" and we sure

lived it out, both in doing thework and then back with eachother during the downtime.

I've already asked Mike whenthe next one is, so I can put it

on our calendar and make surethe whole family can go. Ourfamily is committed to partici-pating again — I hope manymore families will join us andmake this a tradition for yearsto come!

SHPC is an ORANGE church, which means that we take seriously astrategy that says: 2 combined influences working together makea greater impact on a life than each of those influences working alone.Or: 2>1+1.

Why the color orange? ORANGE synchronizes the light of the church (yellow) with the love of thefamily (red). ORANGE believes that the church and the home are the two most powerful influencesof the planet. Both exist because God initiated them. Both exist because God desires to use themto demonstrate God’s plan of redemption and restoration to a broken world. But, they need eachother—too much is at stake for either one of them to fail. By integrating and working together, they have the potential to make a greater impact than if each of them works alone. The primarytask is to build God’s kingdom in the hearts of men and women, sons and daughters.

Implementing ORANGE requires a great deal of dedication on the part of our volunteers, so I'd liketo take this opportunity to thank each and every one of YOU for the time, energy, love and com-mitment you give to our youngest disciples and to partnering with their parents. From cradle tocollege, you are there for them... we hope you know how grateful we are to you for sharing your-selves and your faith so willingly. We couldn't make an impact on their lives without you!

Blessings, Britta

LOVEChoosing to give someone your time and friendship no matter what

We had an awesome time hang-ing out with other SHPC fami-

lies at Family Fun Day! Weenjoyed old-fashioned games,

swimming, crafts, and finishedoff the evening with some yum-my barbeque. The best part ofthe experience was the oppor-

tunity to spend the day withpeople we see every Sunday,

but rarely get to sit down andspend time with. We can't wait

for the next Family Fun Day!—Candice Valdes

Operation Overboard-- thisyear's Vacation Bible School--made a big splash with our 2012divers! 125 kiddos gathered inour underwater extravaganza tomeet Ocho the Octopus andD.C., our Dive Chief, to learnthese five dive essentials: •Depend On God • Dare to Care

• Claim Jesus • Choose to Fol-low • Change the World •

With our phenomenal leader-ship team of both youth andadult volunteers, participantswere in good hands all week asthey sang songs, played games, created snazzy art projects,

dove into Scriptureand experimentedwith science fun. Tokeep with our watertheme, we decided tosupport the LivingWaters project inGuatemala. With exu-berance, we broughtforth our coins andbills every morning,

in hopes of helping bring cleanwater to our friends in Guate-mala. We're pleased to an-nounce that we raised awhopping $380.21! We can’twait to see what next year’sVBS will bring!
