Jesus’ Personal TrainingWhen Jesus began his train-

ing program here on earth,he gathered twelve men aroundhim. Over the next three yearshe shared life with these guys —eating together, laughing to-gether, struggling with hardthings together, and learningtogether. Jesus would encoun-ter individuals, but he al-ways called them intocommunity with others. Hemodeled a method oftraining that worked andhis disciples carried it for-ward as they founded theearly church.

Jesus’ training methodwas brilliant. Sure, he

had a great deal of materi-al to communicate. But ifhe had only used lectures totell of God and God’s love, wewould have been less for it.Jesus knew that the things thathe had to say meant very littleunless the hearer took them in,mulled them over, wrestledwith their implications and fi-nally made them their own. That could only happen in com-munity. So Jesus lectured… andthen he walked with others as

they made his teaching theirown. And lives were changed.

At SHPC, Jesus' model is ourmodel. Whenever we study

we do so in community. In com-munity people can wrestle withthe transforming truth of thegospel and the implications that

following Christ has on ourlives. This spring is a good ex-ample. In February we launchAlpha, a program designed tobe a place where someone whohas never really consideredChristian faith can ask ques-tions. In Alpha we eat togetherand talk about the big questionsof life, with a group of peoplecommitted to searching togeth-er.

Our Journey groups, whichwill also begin in February,

are small group gatherings thatwill talk through the scripturethat is being preached on Sun-days. Together we will bestudying the Sermon on theMount, found in Matthew 5-7,and the often-surprising words

of Jesus as he first chal-lenges the status quo, thenturns it upside down.

As we turn the calendarto 2013, I hope you will

look for a way that youcan join Jesus in his train-ing program. If you are notin a group where you areregularly talking aboutscripture and its impact onyour life. I hope you will

join us for a Journey group orfor Alpha. I look forward to theyear ahead and the possibilitiesthat it holds. I’m glad we get toshare it together.

Happy New Year!

God’s Unusual PassionsJanuary is a month that oftenlives in the shadows of Christ-mas. New Year’s comes andsimply goes away. It is oftenhard to carry on that ChristmasSpirit beyond December 26th. Iknow that I hit “MaximumChristmas Potential” on orabout December 23rd and fromthere on out its a quick free fallto normal life.

So what are we to do in Janu-ary? How are we to continuethe story of God working in ourlives that he started in mangerso long ago? How about we alltake time this month of Januaryto focus on the things that Godseems to be passionate about.

On first glance, you might thinkthat God is passionate about allthings big: Big church, Big gifts,Big message, Big music. But thescriptures tells us another sto-ry. God’s passions are focusedon the small, on the meek, onthe intimate and the deeplypersonal. The first chapter ofthe Gospel of John tells us thatThe Word became flesh andblood, and moved into theneighborhood… . That is person-al and relational. God becamelike us so that we could betterunderstand his message to us.So that we could be better nur-turing relationship. He came tobe with us—with you.

God is passionate for the wid-ow and the children.Over and over again we readabout our God who care forthose who are little small andwithout power in their society. He cares for the often over-looked and uncared for. He sayshe is the defender of the weak.He cares deeply for those who

suffer through oppression andfrom corruption. God is clearlyconnected to the poor and thedown trodden. Religion thatGod our Father accepts as pureand faultless is this:

“to look after orphans and widowsin their distress and to keep one-self from being polluted by theworld.” –James 1:27

So I ask you, and myself—Do your passions line up withany of God’s unusual passions? This January, as you workthrough scriptures on Sundaysand during the week, I inviteyou to join me as we learn howto be passionate about thethings that God is passionateabout. Let us learn to lovethose whom God loves. Let uswork to fix the things that Godsay are broken before we fixthe things we see as broken.Let us together love the thingsand the ways God shows hisLove.

In December, the children were busy learningabout the spirit of Christmas. Singing rangthrough the preschool as they practiced fortheir annual Christmas program. Class holidaypajama parties and a visit from Santa kickedoff the Christmas holiday and brought the se-mester to a cheerful close.

For this year’s Angel Tree, the preschool de-cided to have the entire school sponsor twochildren. We are happy that 2 brand new bicy-cles and helmets, new tennis shoes and someclothing made their way to the angels we ad-opted. Thank you to all of the families whosegenerous donations made it possible for thesechildren to have a very bright Christmas.

A HUGE thanksgoes to our parentand student volun-teers who helpedframe our swingarea for safer play-ground during ourDecember workday.Ben Boehman, GregBiles, Tyler Boob,Tim Whitten, Jeffand James Peter-son, Duane Pietsch, and Sam and FaithLawrence, THANKYOU so much fordonating your timeand energy!

We look forward to seeing you all this NewYear!

Pilgrim Stories:Updates from Brodiesubmitted by Ruth Ann Widner

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heav-en and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go andmake disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the nameof the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, andteaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.And surely I am with you always, to the very end of theage.” – Matthew 28: 18-20

As someone who came to know Christ well intoadulthood, the idea that I am to “go and

make disciples” was not only daunting, but moreimportantly, something that I intended to putoff until I had more fully developed as a Chris-tian—you know, LATER. MUCH LATER! However, with the growing understanding that this verse isat the very heart of developing as a Christianand is kinda important (it’s known as The GreatCommission after all), I decided to respond toGod’s nudge and sign-up as a Brodie Campus Pil-grim.

Since making the initial commitment, I’vespent a fair amount of time reading scripture

and praying about how to transform myself intoan evangelist, so that I can do my part to fulfillthe Great Commission through God’s work at theBrodie Campus. As a result, I’ve been looking forand finding opportunities to share my faith storywith others, extending invitations to our adultSunday school and worship service, praying formy non-church friends’ hearts to be opened toGod’s love and grace, and being mindful to serveour church in multiple ways. And here’s the big“ah-ha” for me that many of you already know …my efforts to make disciples of others makes mea better disciple – I am becoming that more fullydeveloped Christian.

In the New Year, I encourage you to embracethe Great Commission, as well, and consider

that the entire congregation whether Pilgrims ornot, can help make the Brodie campus a success.Seeing your faces on occasion in our 9:30 Sundayschool or 11:00 contemporary worship service isnot only encouraging to the Pilgrims and cankeep us connected as a church, but will also al-low you to better understand what is happeningat Brodie, so you can share the news with oth-ers. Come see for yourself the amazing workGod is doing!

News from Malawi: UNILIA Earns FullAccreditation – a Time to Celebrate!Full accreditation for the University of Livingsto-nia was a long, arduous nine-year journey.

Laws Campus (College of Education) now has 27resident faculty with impressive credentials.College of Theology (Ekwendeni Campus) hasmade significant progress since 2009 – an inspi-ration to all. The Malawi Government Accredita-tion Team declared UNILIA on the leading edgein higher education in Malawi!

In October 2012 at the Sixth Annual Graduation,Hon. Khumbo Kachali, Vice-president of the Re-public of Malawi, made the formal announce-ment that the University of Livingstonia was nowa fully accredited institution of higher learning.

This is BIG NEWS and there is much rejoicing tobe done by all! But the credit and well-deservedcongratulations go to all of the faculty, staff, students and countless volunteers who haveworked so hard for so many years to reach thislevel of accomplishment, including volunteersfrom Shepherd of the Hills.

The benefits are many, but the main benefac-tors are the graduates of UNILIA whose degreeswill now be fully recognized in Malawi, thus offi-cially opening many government job possibili-ties.

In 2012 the two Colleges graduated a total of 40students, 26 teachers and 14 pastors. Thetheme, “Set Free to Love and Serve,” under-scored the UNILIA mission statement of inspiringand educating students to become ‘principledleaders who will transform society for the Gloryof God.’

Currently, enrollment at the College of Theology(Ekwendeni Campus) is 32. Eighteen are studyingfor the Diploma in Theology while 14 are strivingfor the Bachelor in Theology degree. Enrollmentat Laws Campus is up to 339 students with a pos-sible 100 more arriving in February 2013. Degreeprograms in Education, Environmental Studies,Development Studies, and Human Rights now areoffered at Laws Campus.

Kids Hope CornerWe successfully kicked off thestart of the Kids Hope mentoringprogram with Williams Elementa-ry in October and we are hopingto grow the program. We have 6mentors and 6 prayer partners, each matched with a child. Men-

tors have been meeting with their child everyweek for one hour since the end of October andthey are making a big difference.

We need your help as Williams needs morementors! There are a lot of at-risk kids thatwould benefit from an one-on-one loving rela-tionship. If you have one hour a week to giveto a child, please consider Kids Hope. We willbe holding another mentor training in January, time TBD.

If you don’t have an hour a week, you can jointhe SHPC Kids Hope Leadership Team, which iscurrently made up of the Director, Prayer Part-ner Coordinator (Summer Whitten), and MatchCoordinator (Shannon Shumaker). We would loveto add a Communications Coordinator and anEvents Coordinator.

In addition, Williams has other opportunitiesfor participation that don’t require a one hour aweek commitment. These opportunities are atthe school:

You can look at their website atwww.williamswildcats.org to see ways to getinvolved.

Please also include Kids Hope in your prayers. It will make all the difference for the children, the school, and SHPC. We hope to get as manypeople from SHPC involved in this ministry aspossible.

Please contact Lori at [email protected] if youare interested in being a part of this vital minis-try or you want more information about theopen leadership positions. Thanks!

● Community garden - work days throughout the year.● Office work - help relieve their staff of data entry,
