2015 pREviEw: GRACE womEN’S SoCCER fiELdS AN ExpERiENCEd, huNGRy tEAm iN 2015

Grace’s women’s soccer team broke new ground in several ways in 2014, and they have plans for more new territory this fall.

The Lady Lancers achieved a number of firsts last season – its first NAIA Top 25 ranking, its first appearance in a national championship game – all while playing night games under the lights for the first time in the newly renovated Miller Athletic Complex.

But Grace, who ended the year 17-5-3 and ranked No. 18 in the final Top 25 poll, is not resting on its laurels. Head coach Michael Voss, the program’s all-time win-ningest coach, has the team’s sights set higher this fall.

“We aren’t settling on our past ac-complishments. We are going to give our very best and leave the results to God,” Voss said. “Our goal is [making] the NAIA Nationals. It’ll be exciting to watch this team go hard.”

Grace will be tested from the onset of the 2015 campaign. Voss has arranged one of the toughest nonconference schedules in the nation, including a matchup with NAIA national runner-up Northwestern Ohio at home on Sept. 19. Two of Grace’s first three matches are against teams who ended 2014 in the NAIA Top 25 as well (Bellevue, The Master’s). To prepare them for the rigors of the schedule, Voss has put the Lady Lanc-ers through “the most intense preseason training we’ve ever had.”

Voss hopes to “see what we’re made of” from the formidable early-season schedule. “We will always try to play tough, highly ranked teams. The goal is to beat them all, but whether or not we can achieve that depends on if we play to our redemp-tive potential. This schedule will be difficult. It will stretch us and test our depth, but all

of us are eager to see just where exactly we match up.”

Grace boasted one of the stingiest de-fenses in the NAIA in 2014, ranking second in the nation with 14 shutouts. Sophomore goalkeeper Abby Schue was a First Team NCCAA All-American selection last year after giving up 0.49 goals per contest. Re-turning starters Faith Voehringer, Meredith Matson, Heather Martin and Erica Manchess form a formidable defensive line. Carlie Sa-linas, Kristelle Jadoo and Marina Tolczyk add tremendous depth to the back line.

Senior Carianne Sobey highlights Grace’s midfield for her final season. Sobey, the program’s career leader in as-sists, dished out 12 assists in 2014. Meghan Wiles, Darcy Johnston, Maile Grout, Emma Neahusan, and Jerusalem Groves give Voss a wealth of options at his disposal to drive his unique possession style of play.

Grace should not lack for scoring as the squad returns 86 percent of its goals from 2014. Local standouts Mallory Ron-deau (senior, Wa-wasee HS) and Mer-edith Hollar (junior, Warsaw) give Grace an experienced, fearsome attack. Rondeau was the 2014 NCCAA Na-tional Player of the Year after racking up 18 goals and 11 as-sists, and Hollar tal-lied eight goals and five assists. Return-ing forwards Jordan Hairgrove, Kaitlyn Hayes and Sabina Meyers fortify a deep rotation.

Voss brought in six new faces in the offseason, adding much-needed depth across the field. Defenders Hannah Miller, Clair Snodgrass and Kristen Bellinger, mid-fielder Allison Vroon and forwards Shelby Fort and Aubrey Feipel have impressed their new coach so far this preseason. “There is already very good chemistry with our returning players and the rookies. The newer players are very competent. They are doing a fantastic job adjusting to the col-lege game.”

Grace’s roster is lined with fantastic individual talents, including five returning All-Crossroads League players. But Voss maintains that Grace’s collective unit will propel the team to reach its goals. “Our group is solid across the board. This is a very balanced team with quality players from top to bottom. What we will accom-plish, we will accomplish as a group togeth-er,” he said. “We have the tools to achieve our goals, but we will need to demonstrate consistency through December.”

Head coach Michael Voss enters his ninth season at Grace as the program’s all-time winningest coach. Since accepting the job in 2007, Voss has aggressively recruited women who not only compete at a high level on the field, but who also have a passion for bringing glory to God.

Voss’s trademarked soccer style of “possession-attacking futbol” has resulted in five trips in six years to the NCCAA National Championships. The 2014 campaign was arguably Grace’s finest season in program history, culminating with an appearance in the NCCAA National Championship match. The Lady Lancers also earned their first NAIA Top 25 ranking in 2014 and ended the year at No. 18.

Voss holds the top five single-season marks in Grace’s program history, leading the Lady Lancers to a 14-6-3 record in 2009, 14-7-3 record in 2011, 17-5-3 record in 2012, 13-7-2 record in 2013 and a 17-5-3 mark last fall. Voss’s successful recruiting has been on display as the team earned both the Crossroads League Offensive Player of the Year and Midfielder of the Year awards in 2013 and 2014. In 2012 a pair of Lady Lancer freshmen (Mallory Rondeau, Carianne Sobey) earned First Team NCCAA All-American honors.

Rondeau was also named the NCCAA National Player of the Year in 2014, marking the highest individual honor in team history.

Additionally, the Lady Lancers under Voss have consistently been graded as one of the smartest teams in the nation. Over the past five years, Grace’s team GPA has never been lower than 3.60. The Lady Lancers’ team GPA ranked first across all NAIA women’s soccer pro-grams in 2011, 2012 and 2013 and was second in the NAIA in 2010 and 2014. Individually, the Lady Lancers have produced 39 NAIA Scholar-Athletes and seven CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-Americans since 2011.

Voss’s desire to disciple the women of Grace’s soccer team is clearly seen in his organizing missions trips for the Lady Lancers. In the spring of 2014, Voss led his team to minister in Nicaragua. The team has also traveled to the Cayman Islands and to Peru.

In March 2012, Voss was named an assistant coach for the Women’s National Team of Haiti. His three-year commitment includes identifica-tion, training and development of Haiti’s WNT, U-20, U-17 and U-14 WNT.

Prior to coming to Grace, Voss and his family worked as missionaries to the southern jungle of Belize, Central America. He coached the Toledo United Professional Futbol Club, fighting for a CONCACAF Champions Cup bid. Voss also worked at the Calvary Chapel Christian Schools in Murrieta, Calif.; from 1996-2005 he was the athletic director, the director of soccer and the head girls’ soccer coach. Voss started the soccer program and compiled a record of 102-51-17.

Voss, who has earned six Coach of the Year honors, attended Santa Clara (Calif.) University from 1991-93 and was a member of the soccer team that finished 20-1-2 and was NCAA Div. I National Finalist in 1991. He would complete his undergraduate work at Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.) in 1996 studying religion with an emphasis in Biblical studies and Greek.

He is licensed with a USSF “C” and an NSCAA “Advanced National Di-ploma.” He is a “Certified Athletic Administrator” from the NIAAA. Mi-chael and his wife Summer live in Winona Lake, Ind., with their three boys, Justus, Cole, Landan, and their daughter, Kaina.

GRACE LANCERS 2015 WOMEN’S SOCCER

Welcome to Grace College Women’s Soccer!! The team and coaching staff are simply stoked you are here!! Every person involved in our pro-gram wants you to know about Possession-Attacking Futbol -- what we are about and most importantly what we stand for.

We are a university level soccer program in the United States of America who knows that we have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23) and that the punishment for that sin is death (Romans 6:23). However, we also know that the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ because when we were still lost in our sin he died for us, substituting his death in place of ours (Romans 6:23, Romans

5:8). Yet, that is not the whole story. Jesus rose from the grave and conquered death (Luke 24:6-7). Since we confess with our mouth and believe in our heart that Jesus was raised from the dead we are saved (Romans 10:9-10). In this we have an eternal destination of heaven.

This changes everything!! This is the beginning of Possession Attacking-Futbol. Since this is true, our desire is to demonstrate these truths found in the Bible through soccer. Our brand of Fut-bol is a considerate style. We desire to share the ball ridiculously and get everyone on the field involved. This is an extremely creative, demanding, and dynamic style of intentional possession where every player attacks. Each player is vitally important.

The idea is that you would see the Lord in the style we play and the personality of the players that play on the pitch; in quite simply the way we all go about playing this game….from hours before the match to way after the match. (1 Cor. 12) We want you would know Christ and have an eternal home in heaven!! Jesus is standing at the door and knocking. We want to encourage you, hear his voice! Open the door! He will enter your life and you will never be the same!! (Rev 3:20) This is the reason for OUR joy! There is a peace that surpasses all understanding (Phil 4:7) and a joy that is simply inexpressible (1 Peter 1:8-9) for those who have found their hope in Christ.

This is why we are a part of Pos-session-Attacking Futbol and why we desire to “Ball it up!”
