Prediction 3 Open source vendors will have tomove from a support model to a solutions creationmodel if they are to survive Too many open sourcevendors are unable to gain enough revenue to sustainthemselves in a highly competitive market We expectthose that only provide support without a significantecosystem of partners and solutions will not survivethe year

Judith Hurwitz Predictions for Hybrid Cloud While it is clear that the cloud market is maturing

Customers are beginning to understand the use casesfor public versus private clouds in a much morepragmatic way than only a few months ago We areseeing public cloud vendors moving to offer their cloudservices on premises We are also seeing private cloudvendors branching out to public clouds We expect tosee a lot of change in hybrid cloud in 2017

Prediction 2 While security has always been thetop issue for companies moving to the cloud a largerpercentage of businesses will select vendors based ontheir security infrastructure This could be the year ofhybrid cloud security

Prediction 3 Finally we will see a large number ofhybrid cloud management solutions hit the market As more businesses increase their reliance of a varietyof cloud based infrastructure platform andapplication services the need to understand what andhow various services are used will be a demand Management will expand to cost considerations andcapabilities based on the use case

Judith Hurwitz Predictions for IoT While sensors and its semi-structured data has been

around for decades we are finally getting to the pointwhere IoT data is being coupled with high powerclustering technologies such as Spark and scalableconverged systems Applying advanced analytics inmaturing tools is beginning to turn a collection of data

elements into a sophisticated data analytics platformthat can be applied to real solutions to pragmaticproblems We expect to see a slew of solutionsranging from smarter traffic to smarter factories andsmarter device management Given this evolutionwhat do we expect to happen in 2017

Prediction 1 Our first prediction for IoT is that thegrowth will be in industrial sector rather than theconsumer sector

Prediction 2 We expect to see a huge number ofstartups focused on real time data for the IoT marketThese startups will primarily focus their attention onthe Spark Framework as the foundation for offerings

Prediction 3 There will be more and moreattention paid to the security side of IoT given someof the opportunities for mischief ndash ie hacking intocameras and sensor based devices While there willbe few startups in the IoT security market this yearwe will expect to see security offerings customized forIoT from established security vendors

Jean Bozman Predictions for Hardware

Servers and storage vendors find themselves in ahighly competitive marketplace with many newentrants in the hardware marketplace selling systemsat commodity prices This dynamic is causing largesystems vendors to offer built-in differentiatedfeatures and to highlight their services for ITtransformation We are seeing more integratedsystems that combine servers and storage intoconverged systems for quick installation workloadconsolidation and IT simplification We are seeingmore systems with automation to speed deploymentimprove IT flexibility and reduce operational costs In2017 the traditional categories of servers and storageare giving way to definitions based on systemcapabilities to support specific workloads

Prediction 1 More servers storage devices andconverged systems (combining servers and storage)will go all-flash in 2017 Flash-enabled systems ndashthose using solid-state disks (SSDs) in place of hard-disks (HDDs) ndash will see rapid growth in 2017 Usingflash storage in these systems will give them highperformance and low latency while reducing data-center space requirements This impacts businessworkloads databases and analytics providing fastertime to results than older hard drives usingmechanical spinning disks In 2017 more systemswill go ldquoall-flashrdquo Drivers for the all-flash designsinclude reduced price per storage device increaseddurability and more converged or hyper-convergedsystems using flash storage

Prediction 2 Management software will become a

key differentiator for systems vendors Orchestration and management of workloads are the

key software tools that make software-definedinfrastructure (SDI) a practical option for enterprisesOffering customers an integrated platform withvirtualized hardware advanced management softwareand automation helps customers to transform theirdata centers and achieve greater IT flexibility andoperational efficiency In 2017 the prospect of gainingunified views of datacenter systems ndash and better ITstaff productivity ndash will drive more vendor focus oneasy-to-use management software

Prediction 3 High Performance Computing (HPC)and analytics are converging ndash via a commoninfrastructure of Linux servers Inside enterprise datacenters and cloud data centers HPC and analytics arebeing deployed on the same infrastructure ndash usuallyrunning Linux on low-cost scale-out servers Manycustomers are finding that HPC data such as weatherdata can inform broader analytics workloadsmdashimproving the accuracy of business forecasts for retailstore sales oilgas exploration agriculture andmanufacturing By running HPC and analytics on thesame hardware IT personnel can manage bothworkloads redirecting processing to available serversand storage In 2017 more customers will find thatleveraging HPC data in analytics brings betterbusiness outcomes

Chris Christiansen Predictions for Security

For 2017 passengers on cybersecurity flights betterfasten their seat belts low and tight because weexpect severe turbulence The 45th President of theUnited States (POTUS) is going to demand thattechnology firms cooperate with law enforcement andgovernment intelligence agencies This will set aprecedent for governments worldwide but theirbalkanized interpretations will be driven by uniquesocial political and religious situations IoT explodesas a target and a vector for security threats In adramatic reversal public cloud will become a refugefor many enterprises and SMB that are out-gunned bytheir attackers and unlikely ever to achieve parity letalone superiority

Prediction 1 The 45th POTUS explodes thecybersecurity market Data security becomes criticalas law enforcement and government agencies getcarte blanche for internal and external masssurveillance Privacy laws are Balkanized according toreligious social and political beliefs by the US andother countries Governments increasingly regulateencryption and source code Major countries use socialnetwork profiling to control immigration businesslicenses job prospects and social services

Prediction 2 IoT drives an exponential growth in

security threats Consumer and surveillance camerasspawn record-breaking DDOS and DNS attacksNational security threatened as cyber war againstcritical national infrastructure heats up old and coldwars

Prediction 3 Cloud becomes the secure refuge forcompanies worldwide Next Generation (N2G)security radically alters infrastructure as appliancesare virtualized and hybridized across private andpublic cloud-based data centers Except at the high-end enterprise and carrier level hardware becomes aKleenex-like disposable Many small businessrsquo findsecurity too difficult and expensive so they eliminateon-premise appliance and moves entirely to cloud-based managed and SaaS security services forpredictable costs lower risk and better userexperience

Dan Kirsch Predictions for Analytics amp Cognitive

Just a few years ago analytics experts and dataanalysts were trying to convince business users thatpredictive analytics could be trusted The market hasshifted and now C-level executives and asking howanalytics can be applied in nearly every part of thebusiness Below are our 2017 predictions for analyticsand cognitive computing

Prediction 1 The emergence of embeddedanalytics into a broad array of applications willsignificantly impact the growth of the standaloneanalytics tools market Increasingly analytics arebeing built into increasingly more business andconsumer applications Embedded analytics allowusers to make fast data-driven decisions without theneed to run complex queries seek assistance fromdata analysts or move to a separate BI Analyticsapplication Therefore vendors of standalone tools willhave to move to an industry focus to differentiatethemselves
