From the president

“Art washes from the soul the dust of everyday life.” ~ Pablo Picasso

As you read through this semester’s feature story on pages 4-6 you will see examples of Picasso’s quote as we highlight the many ways the arts heal and provide wellness to people of all ages. Sometimes the healing comes through arts such as tai chi or yoga that combine mind and body activities. Healing also comes through learning a new skill or tapping new energy to create a work of art. Regardless of the art, we at Maryland Hall know that art does heal, that the arts enrich and that art in all its forms enhances individual lives. There have been count-less studies done that document the healing power of the arts. At Maryland Hall I see it as I walk through the halls and see our many patrons and members exploring an art form or trying a creative process for the first time--or the 15th time. And yes, we do have members who have taken upwards of 15 classes.

There are many ways your life can be enhanced through the arts this year--by coming to a performance, taking a class, tour-ing an art exhibit. Perhaps you would like to support what we do by becoming a member or making a contribution to our Annual Fund. We rely on our generous community to support our healing arts activities. We thank you for supporting your community arts center with your interest and participation. I invite you to visit Maryland Hall for some healing arts soon!

Desiree Holmes Scherini

Desiree Holmes Scherini is well-known in the Annapolis area as an artist who teaches and works in several different media, including pastel, oil, watercolor, pencil and charcoal and photography. She also holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and is a certified Clinical Hypnotherapist. Desiree has pursued her interest in Psychology and the helping fields as well as pursuing her love of art, seeing no reason to make a choice. Her upcoming winter class, Creative Meditation for Artistic Expression, is designed to stimulate students’ creative forces through deep relaxation and invites students to enjoy artistic exploration. Each class begins with guided meditation and is followed by fun projects that encourage individual creativity and artistic expression.

At Maryland Hall, the community gathers to engage in the “art of wellness” through participation in a myriad of classes, activities and events. The arts provide an opportunity to center ourselves and concentrate on what makes us unique and encourages us to join together in community. Daily, we are inundated with a constant flurry of information, technology and media; there has never been a better time to turn our attention to the value of arts participation. More specifically, the benefits of focused study of activities that have a calming and restorative effect on our lives. Whether you are returning to the arts or trying something new, the arts will

engage your mind and body and improve your quality of life. The profiles of these five Maryland Hall instructors are offered as examples of the benefits of the Art of Wellness. We invite you to read about how their Maryland Hall classes integrate the art of wellness so that students lead more inspired and healthful lifestyles. You can find full descriptions of these classes on our web site under the Art of Wellness category and see a list of all classes on page 26. We hope you will be encouraged to take one of these classes or explore any of our arts classes to find balance and wellness in your life.

Craig Ebersole

Joan Harris-TernovanTai Chi Chuan

Tai chi is an internal Chinese martial art practiced for both its defense training and its health benefits. Though originally conceived as a martial art, it is also typically practiced for a variety of other personal reasons including health and longevity. Today, t’ai chi ch’uan has spread worldwide with most modern styles tracing their development to at least one of the five traditional schools: Chen, Yang, Wu (Hao), Wu, and Sun. All trace their historical origins to Chen Village in China. MHCA instructor Joan Harris Ternovan teaches the Yang style short form brought to this country by Cheng Man-Ch’ing. “He was a poet, calligrapher, painter, martial arts practitioner and Chinese medical doctor,” Joan says. “The short form consists of 37 postures. It generally takes 3 semesters to learn the complete form. The health benefits of tai chi are many. Its main premise is tolerance and to calm the mind and body. As a result this allows the blood to flow fully though the veins and arteries to nourish the body and pulse oxygen to the brain. It helps posture and balance, lowers blood pressure and increases bone density. The breath is slow and from the stomach which helps relax the mind and body, reducing stress.”

Over the past two decades, Craig has evolved his workout routine into a lifestyle and future career. A certified fitness trainer and wellness coach since 2011, Craig’s class--The Art of Meditation--focuses on relaxation, visualization, and meditation. From the beginning of the three, two-hour workshops, the ability to understand the art of meditation in several distinctive ways is practiced as a group. Each class is organized to create the ability of the student to practice relaxation exercises of deep breathing and visualization. “The path to mindfulness requires patience and practice. Meditation practice is taught in the form of visualization of the mantra and focus on the breath in a relaxed state. To prepare for meditation is to accept the single-pointed focus and use the tools of several modes of meditation practice,” says Craig. “Some of the forms covered include pranayama breathing, Zen visualizations, OM mantra meditation, walking meditations, candle gazing meditation, and the Hands of Light meditation. You are welcome to begin the journey to a peaceful and relaxing mindfulness at Maryland Hall. Appreciate all beauty and find peace in your heart. Come to the realization of an inner energy that enables us to understand our being as not “why I am here” but as a belief that “I am here.”

Gerry SosnowskyYoga

Cheryl MauckPilatesCheryl Mauck has been a dance instructor at Maryland Hall for more than 20 years, teaching hundreds (if not thousands) of young students as well as adults in disciplines ranging from ballet and tap to tumbling and jazz. In addition to dance, she has been offering Pilates classes for adults for many years. She says, “This method of exercising focuses on your core or ‘powerhouse’ and through slow controlled movements strengthens and tones your muscles, improves posture, and increases flexibility. Pilates unites the mind and body. No experience is necessary and each student in my class is able to work at their own pace. I offer variations for beginner through advanced. Pilates is great for the dancer as well as well as the novice. Strengthening your ‘powerhouse’ will help you in your everyday activities. If we strengthen these muscles we will help protect the back, stand taller, appear leaner and feel better! “

Gerry Sosnowsky has been teaching yoga at Maryland Hall for more than 20 years. She has received training in the Sivananda, Iyengar and Anusara yoga traditions, and studied with an array of national and international teachers. Yoga is an ancient system of self-care based on bringing harmony and balance to body, mind and spirit, leading us to a greater sense of peace and well-being. Gerry says of her students, “They are often surprised by the quality of meditation once they start to feel the tensions ease that they might otherwise not have realized they even had.” Beyond flexibility and fitness, the practice of the precise movements that are learned in her classes help students achieve a more conscious and comprehensive level of stress reduction and the benefits of the ongoing process.

How did RPH Architecture first become involved with Maryland Hall? Our firm was looking for more opportunities to give back to the local community, and by coincidence, I bumped into (Maryland Hall Board member) Lisanna Gardner and we started talking about her role at Maryland Hall and the opportunities that were available to support the arts in our own back yard. It was a win-win for RPH – we get to give back to the community and we, in turn, connect with colleagues, potential clients and members of our community.

Why did RPH Architecture decide to become a sponsor of the summer concert series? While there are many opportunities for supporting MHCA we specifically chose this program. Our goal is to ensure that the summer concert series remain free for everyone. This affords people of all backgrounds exposure to the arts and music and wonderful programs offered at the MHCA. And if you show up early enough, RPH provides plenty of warm popcorn to enjoy during the concert.

Why do you think supporting the arts is important?History shows us that a broad education in the arts helps give children a better understanding of their world; our world needs students who are culturally literate as well as math and science literate. MHCA affords this opportunity through the wide range of programming they offer from supporting new artists, the Performing Visual Arts program, ballroom dancing, theatre and the list goes on and on.

Are there other non-profit organizations or community groups that your company supports? While we are one architecture firm, our staff all have a wide range of different passions, and we make it possible to support these. They range from Wounded Warrior Project, the YWCA, Light House Shelter, Salvation Army and Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to name a few. As part of the fabric of the community we believe in supporting causes that improve the quality of life for the residents in our own backyard.

Why is giving back important to your company?Service is your rent for being.

We are grateful to Maryland Hall’s many corporate sponsors for the underwriting they provide to MHCA’s vital arts activities and programming. In this issue, we share observations by Rick Ruhf, Founding Principal of RPH Architecture about the firm’s involvement in Maryland Hall as a corporate sponsor. Located in Annapolis, RPH Architecture has expertise in commercial, residential and affordable housing projects as well as historic design. RPH has been the signature sponsor for Maryland Hall’s Free Summer Concert Series for the past two years. We are grateful to RPH for helping us deliver free performances to thousands of people in our community--helping us carry out our mission, art for all.

ArtReach at Maryland HallArtReach (part of MHCA’s Outreach program) offers ongoing initiatives to make the arts accessible to all students, particularly those who are at-risk and under served students in our community. ArtReach introduces under served students to new arts concepts and experiences and provides meaningful hands-on opportunities to increase self-expression and creativity in a collaborative setting. What began in 2008 with a few after-school workshops in collaboration with the Annapolis Gardens Boys and Girls Clubs, has grown into many year-round programs serving over 1,000 students each year. “This is a vital and growing program that allows kids to connect with their peers, uncover talents and develop important life skills,” says Natalie Spehar, MHCA’s Outreach Coordinator. “We are so thankful to the individual donors and foundations that make all these programs possible.” A sampling of recent activities are below.

MHCA offers ongoing ArtReach activities throughout the year through long-term collaborations with local branches of the Boys and Girls Clubs, We Care and Friends, Seeds for Success and Centro de Ayuda. Often based upon themes related to current gallery exhibitions, these hands-on workshops introduce students to works of art and the empowering stories of the artists that created the work. Artists share new skills with students followed by time in the classroom for students to create a version of the artwork that demonstrates their own feelings and ideas related to the themes. “These activities offer elementary and middle school students with wonderful opportunities to connect with artists, hear about their careers and artistic processes and then express themselves through art,” says Spehar.

This after-school program which began its 5th year in Fall 2016 is for Hispanic Middle and High School students facing adversity. Providing a safe environment for self-expression, confidence building and motivation to stay in school, Jovenes Artistas combines mentoring, arts experience and emotional support to allow students to express their personal stories in creative ways. The program meets three times a week at Maryland Hall and serves 25-30 students each academic year. At the end of each 6-week arts session, students present a gallery exhibit of their artwork or perform music recitals. “We are excited that two graduating members of the program are now assisting younger students,” says Spehar, “leading a mural painting project and abstract art class after school for new middle school participants. Seeing former students become leaders has been an inspiring process.”

This new Maryland Hall program kicked off in Fall 2016 for High School youth on probation, focusing on themes of healthy self-expression and productive interaction with peers. Nominated by officials from the Department of Juvenile Services, these youth meet once-a-week for workshops led by guest artists and music and art therapists. Youth are introduced to a different visual or musical art each week and assume creative and administrative responsibilities to create an overall, interactive arts exhibition that is shared with the public at the finale of the session. This mentorship program serves 16 youth per session with activities taking place Maryland Hall and the Chesapeake Center for Youth Development in Brooklyn Park.

AYAP is the newest addition to MHCA’s ArtReach umbrella, enabling young musicians to develop high-level performance technique as well as entrepreneurial and leadership skills. Student musicians attend monthly workshops led by faculty members and guest artists that have excelled as performers as well as entrepreneurs. Using music as a tool to promote community, AYAP students work with faculty to create free concert experiences for the Annapolis community, often taking place in assisted living centers or other community centers. In addition to performing, AYAP students volunteer as ushers at Maryland Hall performances and provide music instruction on a peer-to-peer basis to beginning instrumentalists through the music activities portion of Jóvenes Artistas. Approximately 25 students are active AYAP members each semester.
