COMEBACK FALLS SHORT: Trailing 10-0 in the third inning, the Jackals plated 10 of the game’s final 11 runs but fell short in their comeback bid, falling 11-10 in their first-ever meeting against the expansion Rockland Boulders last night at Yogi Berra Stadium. In the loss, the New Jersey bullpen allowed just two runs in eight innings, 3B Nick Giarraputo finished 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and DH Mike Jones singled three times in four at-bats.

ON THE MOUND: Southpaw A.J. Wideman makes his second start of the season for the Jackals. Last Sunday at Newark, Wideman took the loss after al-lowing four runs on eight hits in five innings. Wide-man, who was limited to just 11 starts last season due to injury, went 10-1 with a 2.51 ERA for the Jack-als in 2009. The 25-year-old Ontario native was an 11th round draft pick by the Montreal Expos out of high school in 2003.

READY TO ROCK: The Boulders are scheduled to play their first 16 games on the road before they open Provident Bank Park, their new home venue located off the Palisades Parkway in Pomona, N.Y., on June 16 against the Brockton Rox.

WELCOME BACK RAMON: Former Jackals infielder Ramon Nivar has joined the Jackals coaching staff. Nivar, a veteran of 10 professional seasons, was in spring training with the Newark Bears this past May. The 31-year-old spent parts of three seasons (2003-

05) in the majors with the Orioles and Rangers and played 23 games for New Jersey in 2008.

A RIVALRY BEGINS: Earlier this week, the Jackals took two of three games in their first-ever series against the Newark Bears. The Bears won Sunday’s opener in Newark, but the Jackals took the final two games on Tuesday and Wednesday when the series shifted to Little Falls.

MOVIN’ ON UP: Last Sunday, former Worcester Tornadoes’ hurler Tom Cochran earned his first call to the major leagues with the Cincinnati Reds. The 27-year-old, who went 13-3 for the Jackals’ Can-Am League-rival Tornadoes in 2008, was 5-1 in eight starts for Triple-A Louisville prior to his promotion.

NEW JERSEY’S LAST CONTEST OPENING ACT: After their 8-4 win at Pittsfield on Thursday, May 26, New Jersey is 11-3 (.786) all-time on opening day. The Jackals have now won their season opener nine times in the past 10 sea-sons, with the lone loss during that span coming last year. The Jackals also won their fourth straight home opener on May 31 when they downed New-ark 7-6.

FLYING EAST: When the Augusta, N.J.-based Sussex Skyhawks announced they would not be operating in 2011 this past winter, several former Skyhawks made their way to the New Jersey Jackals. Ed Ott, who man-aged the Skyhawks in 2010, returned to the Jackals, where he served as a coach from 2007-09. Players migrating from Augusta to Little Falls include reliever Jared Locke, and infielders Kris Sanchez and Nick Giar-raputo. The Skyhawks were owned by Floyd Hall En-terprises, which also owns the Jackals.

FAMILIAR FACES: Seven players from the Jackals 2010 team are on the 2011 opening day roster, including pitchers Isaac Pavlik, A.J. Wideman, Mike Pontius, and Chris Vasami, and infielders Argenis Reyes, Dan Better-idge, and Mike DeJesus.

JERSEY FRESH: New Jersey’s opening-day roster fea-tures five players who hail from the Garden State: Dan Betteridge (Turnersville), Mike DeJesus (Manalapan), Steve Fox (Washington Twp.), Bobby Gagg (Hamburg), and Isaac Pavlik (Rutherford).

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER: The Jackals added a pair of potential impact players late in spring train-ing. Outfielder Leonard Davis, who hit 20 home runs between Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Syracuse last season, signed on May 20. Myron Leslie, a 2009 Can-Am League All-Star with the Jackals, re-signed on May 24 after spending the past year in the Yan-kees’ organization.

LOADED WITH LEFTIES: With five left-handed hit-ters and three switch hitters on his roster, Jackals’ skipper Joe Calfapietra has the potential to roll out a lineup consisting of eight players who bat from the left side of the plate.

FORMER JACKALS IN SPRING TRAINING: In addi-tion to Oakland A’s reliever Craig Breslow (with New Jersey in 2004), who is currently in his sixth major league season, several former Jackals appeared in major league spring training games. 6-foot-7 right-hander Stuart Pomeranz (2009) posted a 3.86 ERA in three relief appearances for the Los Angeles Dodg-ers. Southpaw Raul Valdes (2006) appeared in seven games (one start) for the St. Louis Cardinals. First baseman John Lindsey (2005-06) went 1-for-4 for the Dodgers. Righty Jon Hunton (2007) made one relief appearances for the A’s.

FURIOUS JACKALS COMEBACK FALLS SHORT IN FIRST-EVER MEETING WITH ROCKLANDFriday, June 3 Recap

Little Falls, N.J. – Trailing 10-0, the New Jersey Jackals plated 10 of the game’s final 11 runs but ultimately fell short in their comeback bid, falling to the expansion Rockland Boulders 11-10.

In the first-ever meeting between the teams, Rockland plated six runs in the first inning, three more in the second, and one in the third to build a 10-0 lead. The first-inning rally was highlighted by home runs from Sean Smith and Tommy Giles.

New Jersey starter Chris Vasami, who was chased from the game without recording an out in the second in-ning, took the loss after yielding nine runs on 10 hits. However, the New Jersey bullpen finished the contest by allowing just two runs over eight innings to give the Jackals a chance to claw back.

Third baseman Nick Giarraputo got the Jackals on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning when he dou-bled home designated hitter Mike Jones, who had reached on a single. The Jackals tacked on a pair of runs later in the frame on a two-run single by shortstop Mike DeJesus to cut their deficit to 10-3.

A Ryan Mollica RBI single in the top of the sixth extended the Rockland lead to 11-3, but from there the Jackals scored the game’s final seven runs, including five in the sixth inning.

New Jersey used a two-run triple by Leonard Davis to pull within one in the eighth inning, but Rockland closer Adrian Martin retired the Jackals in order in the bottom of the ninth to slam the door on the comeback.

Offensively, the top five hitters in the Rockland lineup combined to go 13-for-27. For New Jersey, Giarraputo finished 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles while Jones singled three times in four at-bats.

Jackal Bites: After going 3-for-5, third baseman Nick Giarraputo is the only Jackal to hit safely in each of the team’s first seven games… In the fourth inning, Argenis Reyes struck out for the first time this season in his 26th at-bat.

1967 - Curt Flood’s record string of 568 straight chances without an error ends when he drops a fly ball during a 4-3 win over the Cubs at St. Louis. The Cardinals center fielder had played an N.L.-record 227 straight games without an error beginning Sept. 3, 1965.
