YESTERDAY’S CONTEST: Isaac Pavlik needed just 98 pitches (73 strikes) to fire the Can-Am League’s first complete game this season as the Jackals took the opener of their three-game series with the Torna-does, 5-1. Pavlik, who is tied for the league lead in wins (3) and strikeouts (29), yielded just six hits. Of-fensively, the Jackals plated two runs in the second inning and three more in the fifth with the help of three straight two-out doubles.

THE MAN ON THE MOUND: James Leverton, who has allowed two earned runs or less in each of his first three starts with New Jersey, takes the mound on Saturday night. Leverton currently ranks seventh in the league with a 2.50 ERA. The 25-year-old south-paw, who was selected by the Cubs in the eighth round of the 2008 draft out of Texas Tech, went 10-1 with a 2.79 ERA in 49 relief appearances last season between three Cubs’ minor league affiliates. Worces-ter counters with left-hander Zach Zuercher. Zu-ercher, a 27-year-old Rhode Island native, has struck out 16 batters while walking just two this season. In his career against New Jersey, the former Cardinals’ farmhand is 4-1 with a 3.12 ERA in nine games.

TORNADOES TIDBITS: The Tornadoes enter the contest at 5-9, with three of their five wins coming against the traveling New York Federals. Worcester 3B Mark Minicozzi leads the league with a .411 bat-ting average. Last season, the Jackals went just 5-11 against Worcester but still edged the Tornadoes by half a game for the final playoff spot.

WHAT A RELIEF: On Monday, Jeff Gogal was named the Pointstreak Can-Am League Pitcher of the Week. A former standout at Montclair State, the southpaw hurled 3 2/3 hitless shutout innings and notched two saves while striking out six batters in three contests during the week ending June 5. Gogal, who hails from Kearny, celebrated his 29th birthday on Friday.

HOME IS WHERE THE BATS ARE: The Jackals are 6-2 at home this season. New Jersey is in the middle of a stretch where they will play 14 of 16 games at home.

JACKAL BITES: New Jersey starting pitchers have notched 56 strikeouts while walking just 17 bat-ters... The Jackals are 5-1 when scoring first... In six games against Worcester last season, Argenis Reyes batted .462 (12-for-26) with three doubles and six RBIs... New Jersey has five players batting

.300 or better, including three that rank in the top 10 in league batting average: Reyes (3rd - .373), My-ron Leslie (6th - .354) and Mike Jones (8th - .346)... Leslie is tied for the league lead with 12 walks.

ALUMNI NOTES: Right-hander Stuart Pomeranz, who pitched for New Jersey in 2009, was released by the Los Angeles Dodgers this week after begin-ning the season on the disabled list and making two appearances with Double-A Chattanooga earlier this month... Since moving from the rotation to the bullpen for the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds in mid-May, Raul Valdes has turned in 10 straight scoreless outings... With a .342 average over 32 games, Chris Garcia would rank fifth in the South Atlantic League in batting, ahead of Nationals’ top prospect Bryce Harper, if Garcia had enough at-bats to qualify.

NEW JERSEY’S LAST CONTEST CALL IT A COMEBACK: The Jackals showed a flair for the dramatic during the first two games of their four-game series against Rockland on June 3-4, bat-tling back from deficits of 10-0 and 7-0, respectively. In the series opener, New Jersey trailed 10-0 in the third inning before eventually falling by an 11-10 score. In game two, the Jackals spotted the Boulders a 7-0 advantage before scoring eight unanswered runs to steal an 8-7 victory. New Jersey went on to win the final two contests to take the series.

UPCOMING MILESTONES: Manager Joe Calfapietra is six wins shy of 400 regular-season victories with New Jersey. He entered the season with 386.

WELCOME BACK RAMON: Former Jackals infielder Ramon Nivar has joined the Jackals coaching staff. Nivar, a veteran of 10 professional seasons, was in spring training with the Newark Bears this past May before announcing his retirement. The 31-year-old spent parts of three seasons (2003-05) in the majors with the Orioles and Rangers and played 23 games for New Jersey in 2008.

OPENING ACT: After their 8-4 win at Pittsfield on Thursday, May 26, New Jersey is 11-3 (.786) all-time on opening day. The Jackals have now won their season opener nine times in the past 10 sea-sons, with the lone loss during that span coming last year. The Jackals also won their fourth straight home opener on May 31 when they downed New-ark 7-6.

FLYING EAST: When the Augusta, N.J.-based Sussex Skyhawks announced they would not be operating in 2011 this past winter, several former Skyhawks made their way to the New Jersey Jackals. Ed Ott, who man-aged the Skyhawks in 2010, returned to the Jackals, where he served as a coach from 2007-09. Players migrating from Augusta to Little Falls include reliever Jared Locke, and infielders Kris Sanchez and Nick Giar-raputo. The Skyhawks were owned by Floyd Hall En-terprises, which also owns the Jackals.

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER: The Jackals added a pair of potential impact players late in spring train-ing. Outfielder Leonard Davis, who hit 20 home runs between Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Syracuse last season, signed on May 20. Myron Leslie, a 2009 Can-Am League All-Star with the Jackals, re-signed on May 24 after spending the past year in the Yan-kees’ organization.

FORMER JACKALS IN SPRING TRAINING: In addi-tion to Oakland A’s reliever Craig Breslow (with New Jersey in 2004), who is currently in his sixth major league season, several former Jackals appeared in major league spring training games. 6-foot-7 right-hander Stuart Pomeranz (2009) posted a 3.86 ERA in three relief appearances for the Los Angeles Dodg-ers. Southpaw Raul Valdes (2006) appeared in seven games (one start) for the St. Louis Cardinals. First baseman John Lindsey (2005-06) went 1-for-4 for the Dodgers. Righty Jon Hunton (2007) made one relief appearances for the A’s.

PAVLIK TAMES TORNADOES WITH SERIES-OPENING COMPLETE-GAME GEMFriday, June 10 Recap

Little Falls, NJ – Isaac Pavlik needed just 98 pitches to fire the first complete game in the Can-Am League this season as the New Jersey Jackals opened their three-game series against the Worcester Tornadoes with a 5-1 victory on Friday night in front of 2,965 fans at Yogi Berra Stadium.

Pavlik, who improved to 3-0 win the win, threw 73 of his 98 pitches for strikes as he allowed just one run on six hits.

The Jackals spotted their starter an early lead by scoring a pair of runs in the second inning against Worcester right-hander Nick Serino, who took the loss. After Jeremy Slayden singled with one out, Nick Giarraputo ripped an RBI double just inside third base into the left field corner to plate the first run of the game. After a Kris San-chez single, Chris White pushed across the second run of the contest with an RBI fielders’ choice.

New Jersey chased Serino from the game in the fifth inning, plating a trio of runs on three consecutive two-out doubles by Leonard Davis, Myron Leslie, and Mike Jones.

The Tornadoes picked up their lone run in the seventh inning when Alex Trezza singled and advanced to third on a Nick Salotti double before scoring on a fielders’ choice off the bat of Alex Fernandez.

Jackal Bites: With the win, the Jackals improve to 8-6 while the Tornadoes fall to 5-9. 1927 - During the ninth inning, the Philadelphia Athletics field a team of seven future Hall of Famers. The outfield consists of Ty Cobb in right, Al Simmons in center, and Zack Wheat in left. Jimmie Foxx is at first base, Eddie Collins is at second, and Lefty Grove pitches in relief. Cy Perkins started as catcher, but when Mickey Cochrane pinch-hit for him, seven Cooperstown-bound players were in the lineup.

1985 - Von Hayes becomes the first major-league player ever to hit two home runs in the first inning, leading off with a home run and capping a nine-run outburst with a grand slam as the Phillies go on to rout the Mets 26-7. The 26 runs in one game are a club record and the most in the N.L. since 1944.

1997 - Kevin Brown pitches the first no-hitter of the season and the second no-hitter in Marlins history in a 9-0 win over the Giants in San Francisco. Brown has a perfect game going until he hits pinch-hitter Marvin Benard with a 1-2 pitch with two outs in the eighth inning. Benard is the only Giants player to reach base. San Francisco starter William Van Landing-ham also had a no-hitter for six innings before Charles Johnson’s home run in the seventh breaks up the bid and triggers a Florida offensive explosion.
