CHRIST IS KING

On the final Sunday of the liturgical year we celebrate the feast of

Christ the King. It’s easy to understand today’s scriptures as events that

happened long ago and far away, or predictions that will come true some-

where, some day. But they invite us to claim Christ as our King here and

now. Jesus’ words to Pilate in the Gospel remind us that his kingdom trans-

cends time and place. And the prophecies from Daniel and Revelation give

us reason to be faithful to Christ our King right here and right now.

By concluding the year with this feast we are proclaiming our faith that

Jesus Christ is the one and only King over all seasons, all peoples, and all of

creation. No matter what nation we belong to or what language we speak, he

“has made us into a kingdom” (Revelation 1:6)—one people united in love

and peace for all eternity. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

3 Christ the King Sunday November 25, 2018

Today, the Church’s liturgical year concludes with this feast of Christ the

King. We honor Christ as the King of the Universe and the King of our

hearts by allowing him to take control of our lives. Jesus still reigns as King

in thousands of human hearts all over the world. The Cross is his throne and

the Sermon on the Mount, his rule of law. He is a king with a saving and

liberating mission: freeing us from all types of bondage, enabling us to live

peacefully and happily on earth, and promising us an inheritance in the

eternal life of heaven.

The central teaching of Jesus throughout the Gospels is the kingdom of God.

Jesus begins his public ministry by preaching the kingdom. "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God

is at hand; repent, and believe in the gospel (Mark 1:14).

When we look into the teachings of the New Testament on the kingdom we can clearly see that the

kingdom is a three dimensional reality: the life of grace within every individual who does the will of God,

the Church here on earth, and eternal life in heaven. The kingdom first establishes itself in our hearts

through the sacrament of Baptism, thus allowing us to participate in God's inner life. We are elevated and

transformed through sanctifying grace and this grace comes to fulfillment in the eternal life of heaven.

In reality, Jesus makes it very clear that there exist two kingdoms and they are constantly in battle with

each other. Jesus is the king of one kingdom, and Satan is the king of the other kingdom. The battle takes

place in our hearts, and it displays itself with great drama in the world. To ensure that Jesus is always the

king of our hearts, requires, great commitment, sacrifice, conviction, hard work, service and a lot of

prayer.

We must never be surprised that the spiritual life is a battle between these two kingdoms and it will always

take place in our hearts, until the day the Lord calls us to the kingdom of heaven. If you struggle, you will

conquer. If you conquer, you will be given the crown of victory.

Dear friends, our spiritual life too will always be a continual battle, but if we really love Jesus and his

kingdom, we will always be able to proclaim the inspirational words spoken by St. Paul: “I have fought the

good fight to the end; I have run the race to the finish; I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4: 8)

Today, more than ever, the kingdom of Christ needs convinced Catholics who will fight heroically for

their King. The kingdom of Christ on earth has always been known as the Church militant, not a Church of

cowards. And the Cross- is an essential component for membership in the kingdom of Christ. Those who

belong to the kingdom of Satan do not want a king, who tells them that they have to suffer. They want

Jesus to come down from the cross.

As we celebrate the kingship of Christ today, let us remember the truth that he is not our King if we do not

listen to him, love him, serve him, and follow him. We belong to his Kingdom, only, when we try to walk

with him, when we try to live our lives fully in the spirit of the Gospel, and when that Gospel spirit

penetrates every aspect of our living. We become Christ the King’s subjects when we sincerely respond to

his loving invitation: "Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in

heart" (Matthew 11:29). On this great Feast of Christ the King, let us resolve to give Christ the central

place in our lives and promise him to obey his commandment of love God and love of our neighbor.

ANGEL TREE The gifts from our Angel Tree go to children and siblings of Sorgho Elementary School. The Family Resource office of Sorgho Elementary School prepares angels for our tree with great care. There are suggestions on each Angel of something each child has asked for, please only purchase one gift per angel. Please do not wrap the presents, return your gift by placing it under the tree or bring it to the Parish Office. The Angel Tree will be up in the church next weekend, November 24th. Please try to return all gifts prior to (but no later than) Sunday, December 9th). The sooner the gifts are returned, the easier the sorting job will be.

There will be time for prayer, reflection, and rest. The Men’s Discernment Retreat will be held on December 14-16 at St. Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology. There is no cost to participate in this retreat but registration is necessary. Registration deadline is December 10th . Christmas/New Year's Camp (8th-12th graders): Every December 29th to January 1st, current 8th

graders and high schoolers are invited to attend Christmas/New Year's Camp. It's a great way for 8th

graders to meet kids they'll be going to Camp Life with next summer, and for High School Campers to

reconnect with old friends. This camp is much more laid back than summer camp; campers still do all the

activities, celebrate the Sacraments, and have Adoration, but with a more relaxed atmosphere. This is a

great way to end one year, and begin the next!

Our next confirmation meeting will be on Sunday, December 2nd @ 9:45 am.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Although our Puritan forebears at Plymouth Rock

were almost a hundred years removed from their

Catholic roots, the old liturgical calendar still had an

unconscious claim on their hearts. We’ve already seen

how on Saint Martin’s Day, November 11, medieval

continental Europe observed a great harvest day of

Thanksgiving, with games, dances, parades, and a

festive dinner of roast goose. With the goose went ample

draughts of “Saint Martin’s Wine,” the first wine of the

new harvest. Martinmas celebrated full barns and larders

stocked for the winter. Even after the Reformation, the

tradition of eating goose on Saint Martin’s Day was

retained in Holland, and it was there that our Pilgrims

encountered this tradition. When Governor Bradford

sent four hunters out into the Massachusetts wilderness

in the autumn of 1621, they did indeed find some geese

and ducks, and were persuaded by the indigenous people

to try turkey, too.

Just as the liturgical calendar has been tweaked

over the years, President Roosevelt moved

Thanksgiving to the third Thursday in November in

1939, probably to extend the Christmas shopping

season. The protest was so great that in 1941 the day

established by President Lincoln, the last Thursday in

November, was restored. If the Pilgrims had known of

the Martinmas connection, they might never have

celebrated at all! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
