STRENGTHENED BY THE BREAD OF LIFE Today we resume the “Bread of Life” discourse from John’s Gospel that began two weeks ago. He makes reference to the Jews’ ancestors who ate manna in the desert. These days we would think primarily of Israel wandering in the desert, but faithful Jews would also have known the story of Elijah that we hear today. Strengthened by food and drink in the desert, the angel of the Lord sends him on his forty-day and forty-night journey (the biblical number for a preparation time). Like the food given to Elijah in the desert, Jesus tells his listeners that he is bread for the life of the world. It is very important that we not stop listening to Jesus after his promise of eternal life—a marvelous promise, but this “reward” is not the only reason we feast on the Bread of Life. We also come to the table to be made strong for the journey of mission, that the whole world might have life in the fullness of Christ. We are com-pelled, if we have eaten of the bread of life, to go forth in service to all. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Holy Day of Obligation– August 15th Holy Day of Obligation/ Opportunity: Formerly known as Dormition or Natale, the “falling asleep,” the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into heaven has been celebrated on this day from the middle of the fifth century, and was proclaimed a dogma of our faith on November 1, 1950 by Pope Pius XII. We profess our belief that Mary has gone before us, body and soul, into heaven “because she belonged to Christ.” Our final hope is the resurrection of our own bodies at the end of time, to exist forever in the new order of creation. Mary, our pioneer in faith, blazes the way for us! Mass times will be Wednesday, Aug. 15th 6:45AM & 6:30PM

There is an envelope in your Church Offering Envelope Packet for the collection on August 15th. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

We are asking for any volunteers to help with either our Arts and Environment/Decorating Committee in the Church and/or our Parish Liturgy Committee. These committees will meet beginning in August once a month or once every six weeks to fulfill their designated positions. Arts and Environment will be taking care of our seasonal decorations for the Church building both inside and outside. The Liturgy Committee’s focus is on providing the parish with the best possible opportunities to gather together in prayer and worship (we will plan Masses together, discuss ways to improve what we already do, coordinate prayer services such as rosary services, Liturgy of the Hours, Adoration, Stations of the Cross, and many others). For more information please contact Jacob Hein. Upcoming Meetings: August 22: Liturgy Committee Meeting 6:00PM August 29: Art/Environment Meeting 6:00PM

Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time John 6:41-51

“Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph? Do we not know his father and mother?”

Imagine that you were among the four hundred people who lived in Nazareth with Joseph, Mary and Jesus. You have known Jesus since he was a boy learning carpentry and other trades from Joseph and others in the small town, including yourself. You know that Jesus, like you, had very little education; that he learned the Torah, but had limited, if any, ability to read and write. Then, the Jesus you know says, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever.” What would you think? Would you give Jesus the opportunity to explain what he meant? Would you wait to see what Jesus did to demonstrate that he is “the living bread that down from heaven”? In all honesty, we would probably have the same questions about Jesus. But now, we have the testimony of those who did believe in Jesus as “the living bread that came down from heaven,” going back to the Apostles. Do we learn about Jesus by frequently reading and reflecting on Scripture? How do we imitate Jesus in our life?

Our sincerest thanks to all who helped our family in the loss of father & husband, Bill Knott. Especially, the funeral home, priests, cards & church meal. He has finally gone to his resting place. ~The Knott Family

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process of preparing the unbaptized, and those un-formed by Christianity (termed, un-catechized), for acceptance of Christ, of the Catholic Faith, and reception of the Sacraments of Initiation. Full initiation normally concludes with the Easter Vigil (the night before Easter Sunday). The process usually takes a year, although there may exceptions, due to age or infirmity. Catholic initiation (outside of the R.C.I.A.) indicates that a person is already validly baptized, already accepts Christ, and now wishes to be Roman Catholic. This catechesis (learning the Faith) can be adapted to the specific needs and circumstances of the individual. We will begin class sometimes in September, if you know of anyone interesting in learning about the process please let Fr. Shaiju know.

My name is Nick Higdon, I will be the new director of religious education and youth minister at St. Mary Magdalene. I’m excited about starting this work and getting to know the community in the coming weeks! Just a bit about me, I grew up in Ohio County but most of my extended family are from Owensboro and my mothers maiden name is Riney. So it seems that I’m related to nearly all of you! I’ve had a bit of ministry experience in my past, I’ve been a part-time youth minister. I served as a missionary for a year, traveling the country

with a group of 12, putting on retreats for those in middle and high school. Not soon after, I answered a call to the Seminary, received a degree in Philosophy and Catholic Studies and pursued a master's degree in Theology. I was also exposed to a number of different ministry experiences while in formation for the Priesthood.

I’m excited to continue the great work Crissy and Debi have done at St. Mary Magdalene and I look forward to sharing the gifts I’ve been given with the community. Please keep me in your prayers for the work that will be done in my time here at the parish! A little note to the youth group, I hope to have more information in the bulletin and on social media about a kick off event soon!

We are living in a world where people of all races and creeds hunger more for spiritual sustenance than for physical food. In response to the spiritual hunger of people in his own day, Jesus, in today’s gospel passage from John 6, proclaims himself to be “the bread of life that came down from heaven.” It is through Jesus, the bread of life, that we have access to the divine life during our earthly pilgrimage to God. The sixth chapter of the Gospel of John containing Jesus' teaching on the Eucharist begins with Jesus’ miraculous feeding of his five

thousand hungry listeners in a deserted place to satisfy their bodily hunger. Jesus reveals himself as the true “bread of life that came down from heaven,” to give life to the world. "Manna" represented God’s gift rained down "from heaven" upon the Israelites to prolong their earthly life. Jesus proclaims himself as the new and perfect manna, as incarnate Son of God, literally "come down from heaven." This means that the Bread we consume in the Eucharist is more than just a guarantee that one day we'll have eternal life. It actually gives us a share of that eternal life while we are still on earth. We need to eat the living bread from heaven and be one with Jesus: Jesus wants us to eat him because he IS bread. "You are what you eat?" Jesus is bread and he wants us to eat his flesh. He is ready to come into our lives, regardless of who we have been, or how unqualified we feel. Let us live the life of faith, making changes so that he becomes the staple food of our spiritual life, not a side dish. Let us be a people who recognize that Jesus, whom we consume and assimilate into our being every day, is actually God. Then, from Sunday to Saturday we will grow into Jesus, as he grows in us, our lives will be transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit, and we will become more like him. Thus, we shall share in the joyous and challenging life of being the body of Christ for the world – bread for a hungry world, and drink for those who thirst for justice, peace, fullness of life, and even eternal life. Humor of the week: Pastor ’s bread of life: President Woodrow Wilson’s father was a preacher who eked out a meager living. One day, when he was riding his horse, he stopped to chat with a member of his parish. “That’s a handsome looking animal you have there,” said the latter admiringly. “But why is that your horse is so big and strong and you are so thin?” “Perhaps,” replied Wilson, “it is because I feed the horse and the congregation feeds me.” Communion to the Homebound: We are in need of additional volunteers to help visit and take communion to the homebound parishioners on Sunday mornings. Pray about this opportunity to share your faith and compassion.
