Now let´s learn a bit more about New York City

New York City is in the state of New York.

It`s not the capital , but it is the largest city in the country.

There are 50 states in America. One of them is New York.

BOROUGHS

New York has got five boroughs:

1: Manhattan, 2: Brooklyn,3: Queens,4: Bronx,5: Staten Island

Manhattan

Manhattan is the home of most of the city's skyscrapers.

Manhattan is divided into Downtown, Midtown, and Uptown.

Uptown Manhattan is divided by Central Park into the Upper East Side and the Upper West Side, and above the park is Harlem.

The Empire State Building

• It took less than two years to build it (one year and 45 days).

• The building has 103 floors.

• It is the world`s greatest TV tower (1,454 feet)

• The Empire State Building became the tallest skyscraper in New York on September 11, 2001.

• The Twin Towers of the World Trade Center used to be higher.

• They used to be the tallest buildings in New York.• They were destroyed by terrorists on September 11, 2001.

The Chrysler Building

• The Chrysler Building was the tallest building until the Empire State Building came along.

• The Chrysler Building was done in art deco style.

• The upper part looks like car wheels.

The Rockefeller Center

• Rockefeller Center or Rockefeller Plaza is a complex of 19 commercial buildings.

• NBC studios, Radio City Music Hall are among them.

At Christmas it´s got the most beautiful Christmas tree in New York.And people can ice skate there too.

• It is like a “city within a city”.

A bird`s eye view of Manhattan`s famous skyscrapers

Wall Street is the major financial centre of the U. S. and symbolizes the money of the U.S.

Broadway is the most famous street in New York. It is one of the longest avenues in Manhattan (25 km.)

The “Theater District” The lights from all the theaters and advertisements are very bright.

Times Square

• There are always a lot of tourists here.

• New Yorkers and tourists like to celebrate New Year in Times Square. On New Year`s Eve, December 31, crowds of people stand in Times Square and wait for midnight.

• At midnight everyone shouts: “Happy New Year!” to everyone else.

Central Park

• Central Park is so huge that you can get lost there. It is called the lungs of New York. • Here you will see families walking their dogs, riding their bikes and roller-skating.

• Some people come here just to rest. They walk, sit in the sun, listen to music.

Chinatown is an area with lots of Chinese immigrants.Little Italy is also very famous.

The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States.

It connects Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Madison Square Garden

It is the largest indoor stadium in the city, home of all kinds of sports, public events and entertainments.

STATEN ISLAND

The Statue of Liberty

• This statue was a present from France.

•Is symbolizes freedom.

•It was the first thing that immigrants saw when they arrived in America.

•She is also called “Lady Liberty”.

You go there by ferry.

The Statue of Liberty and Liberty Island
