NIGHT OF NOTABLES

One of the highlights of this week, and indeed the year for me would have to be the Year 6 Night of Notables on Tuesday evening. Year 6 for the last five weeks has investigated people who are notable for their achievements and contributions towards the human race. This ranged from the sciences, arts, royalty, mathematics, exploration and Nobel Peace Prize winners. Students in preparation for the night have

delivered detailed speeches, prepared questions and created a display that reflected their notable. On the Night of the Notables, Year 6 students, dressed as their notable and prepared food from their notables era and culture. It was really exciting to see the children so engaged in their learning. Well done to the students, teachers and parents for your efforts in making this a wonderful evening.

PRIMARY SOLO NIGHT

Last night we had the first of our Junior School solo nights with our Primary children performing. What talented students we have! Thanks to the families for coming along and showing support. Next Tuesday we have the Infants concert commencing at 7pm.

SLATE GARDEN

Last week I was lucky enough to taste the very first strawberry from our SLATE garden. It was red, ripe and juicy! Well done gardeners. A huge thanks go to the amazing team of parents for your ongoing assistance with watering and maintenance. The SLATE students are having a great time.

CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION EVENT

Yesterday the students received notes outlining the details of our Christmas Celebration including performance times and costume requirements. This should be a wonderful community event and we look forward to celebrating this time together.

MR PAZOS VISIT

Year 5 loaded into the wonderful and colourful Spanish room. Mr Pazos, a Uruguayan man was waiting for our arrival. There were seed bowls and straws on the table worth $10 to $2,500. He explained to us the straws which had a filter near the bottom to strain the tea which is called “mate.” The 2, 500 straws were made out of 24 carat gold mixed with pure silver. He showed us “mate” which is a traditional tea from South America. Mr Pazos said that the cups were made out of seeds which were very strong. Then to prove it to us he started banging the cup on the table and the funny thing was it broke in half. He said that you could lose your job if you drink a cup of coffee at work but if you drink mate you cannot legally and that is all because of tradition in South America. We all enjoyed the talk by Mr Pazos and we had a great time. Gracias seňor Pazos !

I would like to offer my words of congratulations to both the Senior School and Junior School nominees who represented Broughton on Monday at the Rotary Club of Campbelltown Youth Excellence Awards. It was a great night of celebration for students who received nominations from their various schools. It was a privilege to witness the caliber of students in our region. Mr O’Connor in his article has described the evening and the successes, but I would like to congratulate the following students in the Senior School for their marvelous efforts; Joshua Little, ChunXi Jiao, Alexia Stephens, Samuel Staples, Adam Ursino, Lucy Chapman and Alexandra Georgieff.

Congratulations to Jackson Gray of Year 7 who has been selected to attend the South West Metro Development Swimming camp starting on the 23 November. The camp will be held

DRAMA NIGHT

Last Wednesday night Drama students in Years 9, 10 and 11 showcased their work from throughout the year at the College's annual Drama Night. Students presented a variety of performances in a number of dramatic forms including scripted Realism, Commedia dell'Arte, Surrealism and symbolism, individual performance and group-devised work. For many students it was their first time performing outside the Drama classroom and they demonstrated great bravery in being willing to share their talents with the College community. It was a wonderful night that showcased high quality work; however, the night also showcased the importance of working together and supporting one another. It is a blessing to see our students

With items from our talented Year 9/10/11 Elective Music classes, Year 7/8 Extension Music classes as well as our award winning ensembles showcasing repertoire from 2012, including everything from Eye of The Tiger through to a special medley from Les Miserables. All ages are welcome.

MISA LEADERSHIP DAY

On 1 November, the four College Captains went to Macarthur Anglican School to take part in a MISA Leadership Day. The goal of the day was twofold, to interact with members of leadership teams from other schools and to bounce ideas off each other.

There were three sessions throughout the day, the first focused on the importance of teamwork and group dynamics. The second was about maximising the leadership qualities you have, and how to bring out the best in others. The third, and most fun, session was all about sharing ideas between schools. One school had the very unique idea of “Slave Day” whereby students are auctioned off to teachers to act as personal ‘slaves’ for the day, performing clerical tasks and carrying books to and from classes.

Overall the day was a huge success! We made new friends, had a great time brainstorming ideas and improvements for events within the College, and we are all very excited to put the skills we have learnt into practice.

STUDY SKILLS TIP FOR NOVEMBER: INDEPENDENT LEARNING

Some students take a long time to realise that there are actually two types of work in secondary school. There is the obvious work, the work your teacher specifically tells you to do and that is compulsory: homework, working on assignments, preparing for tests and assessments. But students who get good results in school take a larger measure of responsibility for their learning, this means that the nights where they do not have much compulsory work, they also do independent learning. These are the additional things you do, if you have no other schoolwork to do that night, to improve your understanding of your subjects. It is what students who get good marks are doing; they are just not talking about it to their friends!

Examples of independent learning:

Reading Reviewing what you have been learning at school that week Extra practice on questions you find hard Research on an area you are interested in learning more about Making a mind map about what you have been learning Making study notes on a topic Improving your touch typing skills Reading ahead in your textbook Improving your study skills (you can complete units on www.studyskillshandbook.com.au) Doing work from a different textbook or study guide for one of your subjects (check the school library, local

library and bookshops).

BROUGHTONNewsletter- 9

Some nights you will not have time to do any independent learning. Other nights you will have no homework and will spend the whole time allocated to schoolwork for that night working on independent learning tasks. Your teacher may even give you a sheet that has suggestions of independent learning work for that subject. If you are unsure, you can always ask. This means in secondary school you can never say ‘I have nothing to do’ – this really just means ‘I have nothing compulsory to do at the moment!’.

One component of independent learning in high school is making your own study notes or summaries. You can learn more about how to make study notes in the unit ‘Summarising’ on www.studyskillshandbook.com.au

PREFECT CORNER

LACHLAN BAILEY

Hi, I’m Lachlan. I have been at Broughton since Year 7, having moved from a public school along with my twin sister, Alex. Moving to a large school like Broughton was quite a change after being at a particularly small school. I have really enjoyed all the opportunities at Broughton, particularly meeting plenty of interesting people!

One of my main hobbies is reading, and, yes, I have been known to overindulge on occasion. I also work very hard at Tae Kwon Do. At school, I am heavily involved in debating and several other activities such as Duke of Edinburgh, which is a great program for those able to be involved - the hikes are awesome.

I am the Darlington House Prefect, and am looking forward to assisting Mr Strong and the other House Prefects in organising house events such as the Swimming Carnival. I would like to help organise some other house events with the house prefects to increase participation by people who don’t usually get involved in the carnivals.

We have a great prefect team, and I’m looking forward to the next year, working with the other outstanding people in our team.

WRITER OF THE WEEK

Congratulations to this week’s winner of the writer of the week. This entry is from William Brown of Year 8, who offers us some of his Fantasy genre writing.

“Tenti had hid behind the gnarled tree for what felt like hours as the trolls, ogres and black knights came rushing past his hiding place. Finally he began crawling, ducking and weaving his way to the dark castle, unseen by anyone. He slipped past the castle guards and once inside grabbed a torch, finding his way to where the stone lay.

On entering the room he gazed in awe at the orange glowing precious stone, the blue mist surrounding it.”
