Adret Company Profile

During 1991, a small company, Electronic Repairs & Manufacture was founded with its main aim to provide a service to the Electrical Test industry as a service and repairs company for the then “Ferret” and “Biccotest” range of Cable Fault Location instruments. ERM soon started to do repairs and service work to other brands of test equipment. We realized that there was a great need in the industry for a company that could supply a good, reliable and economic ser-vice to all players in the industry. During 1993, when South Africa started going through a series of political changes, the value of our currency depreciated so much that it became very difficult for consumers to buy im-ported test equipment. We decided that the time was right to start developing our own range of equipment and the original ERM then became Southern Africa Fault Location. We started by developing our very first ground microphone system, which saw the light dur-ing 1996. Our range grew to as many as thirty different products, ranging from Ground Micro-phone systems to Surge Generators and Pre-Location Scopes. During 2004 we were awarded our ISO9001 certification and is still maintaining this to date. We produce around 95% of the building blocks for our equipment in-house within our Alberton factory. We founded new companies and merged with other industry players to form the Adret Group of companies during 2007. The Adret Group of Companies consist of Southern Africa Fault Location (development and production of new test equipment), Cables For Africa (cable fault location and diagnostic testing), Surge Gen Technologies (service and repairs) and Indlovu En-terprises (sales and marketing for the group). We have built the company over the past 21 years and has and has earned a reputation in the industry as the company that delivers the very best service. We are available 24/7 to our cus-tomers. Over the past years our export market has steadily grown and today we export test equip-ment to Australia, UK, USA, Malaysia, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong and many others. Adret Test Equipment is uniquely positioned in South Africa as the only manufacturer of such equipment in the Southern Hemisphere. Our location in the SADC region offers a lot of scope in the development op the African continent.

Power Cable Fault Location Equipment

Southern Africa Fault Location produces test equipment for the Power Cable Fault Loca-tion industry. We also produce a range of High Voltage Proof Test Instruments and vari-ous safety devices for the Cable Test Industry

Surge Generators 13 Surge Generators are produced in a range from 5kV to 32kV with discharge energy ranging from 500 Joules to 3500 Joules. Combination Systems are available that enables the user to Pre-Locate high resistance faults.

Ground Microphone Systems 21 Ground Microphone Systems are available in a basic analogue and a high end digital range. In the higher end systems selectable filters and time of flight measurements are standard fea-tures.

Fault Pre-Location Scopes 23 Fault Pre-Location scopes are used to pre deter-mine the distance to a fault. It analyses the impedance of the cable using TDR technology. To pre-locate high resistance fault, the unit is connected to the HT pulse, which temporarily lowers the fault resistance.

Cable Sheath Fault Location 26 Sheath Fault Locators are used to determine the integrity of cable sheaths. The “Pool of Potential” method is used to “Pin-Point” where tiny holes are present in the cable sheath.

Cable Fault Conditioning Unit 29 Sometimes it might be necessary to reduce the resistance of certain cable faults to facilitate better Fault Pre-Location results.

Mining Cable Fault Location Equipment

Southern Africa Fault Location produces test equipment for the Mining Power Cable Fault Location industry. Our Partial Break Test instruments will locate a partial break in a cable core as low as 5% of total copper core.

Surge Generators 30 Surge Generators are produced in a range from 5KV to 32KV with discharge energy ranging from 500 Joules to 3500 Joules. Combintion Systems are available that enables the user to Pre-Locate high resistance faults.

Partial Break Systems 31 A DC Current is passed through the cable core under test. The cable can be tapped with a small hammer or some mechanical beater to produce small mechanical shock waves through the cable. As the impedance changes at the fault, a small AC signal is produced. This signal is conditioned and amplified to an audible level.

Cable Route Tracers

Cable route tracers are required when buried cables need to be traced. Our systems can trace “Live” cables, which has electrical current flowing through it or “Dead” cables or pipes, by inducing the necessary current into them. Depth determination is simple and accurate.

Cable Locators 32 Adret Test Equipment supplies a range of Cable Route Tracing instruments. Our systems are reliable and easy to use. Depth of the traced object is displayed in a digital manner.

They are often the cause for cable faults which render the cable useless until repaired and put back into service. Surge generators are used in conjunction with pre-location and pinpoint location equipment to precisely locate the position of cable faults. The instrument described on this pamphlet gen-erates voltages selectable between 3 or 5 KV and is typically used in the location of faults in low voltage networks such as street lighting or smaller consumers. The maximum storage ener-gy of the capacitor is 500 J at 3KV and 750 J at 5KV. All surge generators generate high voltag-es from the mains supply voltage, which is recti-fied and used to charge capacitors, which is in turn discharged into a faulty cable at adjustable intervals. The unit has an internal automatic dump contactor which discharges both the unit and the cable under test. This is activated when the unit is turned off or when power failure occurs. It can be operated in the single shot or continuous pulsing method if correct selection is made. The unit can also be used to perform insulation resistance tests up to the selected output levels.

The instrument is equipped with a number of filters, which greatly simpli-fies the acoustic pinpoint location of faults. It is also equipped with a number of other user-friendly features to simplify the procedure. Display of information is done in bar graph fashion.

Principles of Operation

The instrument embodies the very latest DSP (Digital Signal Processing) techniques, which greatly broadens the possibilities to upgrade and modify the instrument by simply updating

the software. This means that whenever new technology is developed it will become availa-ble to you as the owner of the instrument. The acoustic amplifier employs five different filters to filter as much noise as possible before the signal is amplified. The magnetic amplifier is gain adjustable which allows the operator to attenuate the magnetic signal and then pin-point exactly where the cable is. It also em-ploys distance measurement techniques, which measure the time difference between the acoustic and magnetic amplifier. The display is of a 128 x 64 graphical LCD display. Automatic Magnetic Gain Adjustment feature – The instru-ment is set up in Auto Magnetic Gain mode by “memorizing” the cable depth. Auto power shut down feature - Instrument shuts down after 5 min of no user interaction. Backlight also switches off after 30 seconds, if no user interac-tion.

Power Cable Analyzer The Adret PCA101 was developed to assist power cable fault location technicians in pre-locating and pre-determining distances to faults existing in power cables. It gives a direct reading in meters to the fault distance. Fault distances can also be determined from the far end of the cable by simply moving two cursors to any two points on the display screen. It is capable of locating low resistance (that is any fault lower than about 120 ohms or infinity ohms) or high resistance faults with the help of any standard impulse generator and the Adret AE101 high voltage coupling unit.

Operating Modes The unit is capable of pre-locating distance to fault in three distinct modes.

TDR In the TDR (Time domain Reflectometer) mode the instrument transmits a pulse which is re-flected off the far end of the cable. Any imped-ance mismatches (i.e. Joints, open or short circuits) along the cable are also reflected. The waveforms are easy to analyze.

Impulse Current In the Impulse Current Mode a high voltage discharge generated by a surge generator is applied to a faulty cable until the fault breaks down. Thus, the surge energy is then reflected back to its source. Upon arriving at the source it is reflected back into the cable. This contin-ues until the energy is depleted. The PCA101 will capture and store the current waveform flowing in the cable and display it for analysis.

ARC-Echo In the ARC-Echo mode the instrument is con-nected to the faulty cable via the AE101 Cou-pling unit. This unit provides the suitable isola-tion and filtering required to superimpose a TDR waveform on top of the high voltage surge generated by the surge generator. When the high voltage energy arrives at the fault it tem-porarily breaks it down causing a short term short circuit. The waveforms are simple and easy to analyze and look exactly like TDR wave-forms.

1 High Voltage Coupling Unit

Pre-Locating distances to cable faults are not always as simple as connecting a TDR (Time domain Reflectometer) unit to the cable under test. When the fault resistance is higher than 120 ohms the fault can simply not be detected by any TDR. The AE101 and PCA101 combina-tion was developed to fill the gap that exists above 120 ohms to well within the Meg ohm range. It will easily detect and display infor-mation which can be analyzed by anyone with TDR waveform analyzing skills.

Principles of Operation The AE101 is connected in series with any standard surge generator and faulty cable

which provides the high voltage energy needed to temporarily break down high resistance cable faults. When flashover occurs at the fault the AE101 will limit the current flowing and allow the arc to burn for a slightly longer peri-od. The AE101 allows the PCA101 to be cou-pled through suitable filters to the high voltage high energy pulse. Because burning arcs are always a low resistance, we can now use TDR techniques. A single TDR pulse is superim-posed on top of the HT pulse at the correct time. When the pulse arrives at the burning low resistance arc a short circuit is reflected to the TDR. The waveforms are then simply treated and analyzed as any other TDR wave-form when a short circuit is detected.

Sheath Fault Locator Trans-mitter The SFL16T is developed to test for damages on cable sheaths. The Adret SFL16T instrument is designed with simplicity of use and maxi-mum operator safety in mind.

Principles of Operation Sheath Fault Locators are mainly used to pin-point pinholes and damages to cable sheaths. The instrument generates a constant DC volt-

age that leaks into the ground and causes a “Pool of Potential” around the area of leakage. The leakage can then be pinpointed by using the SFL16R and two earth spikes. The instrument is automatically made safe when it is turned off and when a power failure occurs. It can be operated in the continuous or pulsing method. The instrument can also be used to perform pressure tests up to 16 kV DC

The instrument can be synchronized to the SFL16T pulse, and generates an audible signal when synchronized to the SFL16T.

The signals come in bursts of three with a resting period in between. The potential difference between the two earth spikes will be amplified and displayed via the galvometer on the front panel. The meter indicates the relative position of the fault rela-tive to the two spikes.

Cable fault conditioning unit Cable fault conditioning units or “Burndown Units” are used when the resistance of cable faults is too high for Time Domain Reflectome-ter’s to show a reflection. TDR`s can only show a reflection under two conditions. The fault resistance has to be be-low 120R, or infinity. Thus, a method had to be devised to break down the resistance of faults to within the 120R level.

Principles of Operation Burndown transformers use a tapped trans-former system capable of producing high volt-

age low current at the one end of the scale and low voltage high current at the other end of the scale. The high voltage is generated through a trans-former and rectified to give a maximum output of 14kV DC at around 250mA. The low end of the scale is 50V AC at around 70A. The unit is used in a sequential manner where the current flow is monitored before a decision is made to go to a higher or lower scale.

Surge Generators Electricity supply or distribution companies often find that buried power cables become faulty due to ageing and damage. Because energy cables are normally not supplied in lengths much longer than 300m, inevitably many joints are installed and buried. They are often the cause for cable faults which render the cable useless until repaired and put back into service. Surge generators are used in conjunction with pre-location and pinpoint location equipment to precisely locate the position of cable faults. Surge generators are mainly used for the loca-tion of faults in power cable networks. They come in a variety of models from low voltage to very high voltages.

The instrument described on this pamphlet generates voltages adjustable from 0 to 32kV and is typically used in the location of faults in medium voltage networks. The maximum storage energy of the capacitor is 1000 J at 8.5, 17 or 34kV. All surge generators generate high voltages from the mains supply voltage, which is rectified and used to charge capaci-tors, which is in turn discharged into a faulty cable at adjustable intervals. The unit has an internal automatic dump contactor which discharges both the unit and the cable under test. This is activated when the unit is turned off or when power failure occur. It can be operated in the single shot or continuous puls-ing method if correct selection is made. The unit can also be used to perform insulation resistance tests up to the selected output levels.

Partial Break Tester The Adret PB201 was developed to assist trail-ing power cable fault location technicians in pre-locating and pre-determining position of partial faults existing in trailing power cables. It gives an audible indication where the fault is located by the pitch of the sound changing on the headphones. Some external cable beating device is required to make the unit operate. It is capable of locating partial breaks in cable strands to as low as 5% of strands broken.

Operating Modes The unit is capable of simultaneously energiz-ing two individual circuits in a specific cable.

Operating Principles The unit works by simply passing a DC current through a suitable coupling transformer in series with the cores of the cable under test. When the beater approaches a fault, the re-sistance of the fault changes due to the me-chanical movement in the core. This minute change in resistance is then sampled and am-plified to produce the necessary signals.

Proof test equipment Test engineers and technicians need to proof-test cables and switchgear after installation or rework to existing systems. The Adret range of proof testers was designed with simplicity of use and maximum operator safety in mind. The range offers many differ-ent models from DC to AC and VLF (very low frequency) as well as combination AC and DC models.

Principles of Operation All the units use the input voltage through a

step up transformer to obtain the high AC volt-ages. In case of DC output the AC is rectified through a suitable rectifier capable of with-standing the high voltages. Some units use a combination of AC and DC that is switched to deliver AC or DC or both. In the case of VLF equipment a pseudo sine wave is produced through a number of switches and resistors. The outputs are current limited and the unit automatically trips when a set limit is reached. When this occurs the cable is discharged and made safe through a built in discharge resistor. In case the circuit layout does not allow (in case of split units) the automatic discharge of the cable, a suitable manual discharge resistor is supplied

Very Low Frequency Testers VLF test sets are used to field test high capacitance loads like cables and motors/generators. The lower the frequency of an AC source, the lower the current and power required to apply a volt-age to a capacitive load like a cable. At 0.1Hz, it requires 500 times less power to test a cable than at 50Hz. The HVI VLF instruments permit users to field testlong cables and large generators with a portable and affordable test set. A 100 lb VLF instrument can do the job of a multi-ton 50Hz AC test set. Cables should be tested with AC voltage. With the HVI VLF products, it can be down with a practical, economical, and easy to use package.

Tan Delta Measurement Tan Delta can be used to help determine the insulation quality of cables and other capaci-tive loads. It is used in conjunction with a Very Low Frequency (VLF) AC Power Supply to measure the loss angle or Tan Delta of the insulation. These measurements can be used to track the deterioration of service aged cable and establish baseline readings on new cable installations. Changes in Tan Delta measure-ments can indicate degradation of the insula-tion, which can be used to make engineering decisions about the service life of the cables.

The TD System is a bridge for use with a sinus-oidal high voltage VLF power supply. High volt-age is applied to the test specimen through the measuring unit. The control unit compares the phase angles of the voltage and current wave-forms to give a loss angle of the insulation.

The Adret range of inverters was developed to solve the problem of the unregulated nature of power supplied by Generators. Due to the nature and sensitivity of electronic equipment, need-ing a stable supply, failures can be minimized to a great extent. Our Inverter systems electronically generate a constant, regulated mains supply from 12VDC. Systems range from as little as 300W to 3000W of power. Our Dual Battery system ensures that the batteries are charged from the vehicle alternator, ensur-ing full batteries when the operator arrives at the work site. The system also ensures that the main vehicle battery does not discharge, preventing the engine from starting.

Specifications Inverter Inverter 3000W Constant Short Term 6000W Input Voltage 12V Output Voltage 230V, 50Hz Batteries 420AH Deep Cycle Charging System Charger 12V @ 20A From Mains Dual Battery Dual battery charging and conditioning system from vehicle alternator.

Performance The INV3000 will generate enough power to drive our SG100032 for eight hours

The CI75 Cable ID System Power cable jointing technicians are often faced with the problem of having to cut into existing live cables in order to expand their existing net-works. The CI75 was designed to facilitate the positive identification of one disconnected power cable from a bundle. It will, when used correctly posi-tively and safely identify one specific cable. It is very simple to operate and will give perfect re-sults time after time.

Principles of Operation The unit uses a crystal controlled sine wave as a

basis on both the transmitter and receiver of 625Hz. The signal is transmitted into the cable by directly connecting it to two of the cores on the cable to be identified. The far end of the cable should be disconnected and the same two cores short circuited. The unit will also function when the far end of the cable is put into earth using the switchgear. The signal is then picked up by the antenna and its signal strength dis-played through the analog meter on the panel. The application of the instrument is very simple and very low levels of skill is needed for success-ful positive cable identification.

The Cable Spiking Gun Power cable jointing technicians are often faced with the problem of having to cut into existing live cables in order to expand their existing networks. When power cables are being identified for rework, it is always necessary, after positive identification, to make sure the cable is not live. The spiking gun is a device designed with safety in mind. The instrument will ensure that the said cable is safe to work on.

Principles of Operation The unit drives a flat chisel into the cable, short circuiting all three phases together. The chisel is driven into the cable by means of a ballistic charge which is triggered remotely by the operator. The application of the instrument is very sim-ple and very low levels of skill is needed for successful safe positive cable identification. It is recommended that the cable is positively identified by means of the non-destructive Adret CI75 before use.

Plate couplers

The most recent addition to our inter-car connectors is the patented range of plate couplers. These allow all power, data, communications and safety circuits to be incorporated into the one connector. Each is a separate plug or receptacle module that can be individually replaced without removing the plate coupler from a carriage. The couplers are mounted under carriage draw bars and allow sets to be separated and re joined in a matter of moments. They can operate under their design electrical loads while being fully submerged in water. New Macey plate couplers were used in the Outer Sub-urban Carriages built for Rail Corp by United Group Rail. These proved to be reliable and met the customer’s requirements for quick and safe inter-car coupling.

New Macey plugs

Plugs are securely connected to receptacles using the well tested Camlock coupling system. The two parts are separated by a rubber gasket which is compressed with coupling levers. This gives a secure and waterproof connection. Multiple terminal plugs are produced to suit your require-ments. Apart from earth and power conductors, these can include data and communications circuits.

Receptacles

New Macey receptacles use high quality silver plated multiple wire or beryllium copper lamella sockets. These significantly reduce the force required to connect to plugs and give positive con-tact along the full length of terminal pins. Allowable current densities are higher than normal solid sockets, reducing heat generation.
