THROUGHOUT THE GALAXY, THE

EMPIRE HAS BEGUN TO REGROUP IN A

Family FriendsOlin Garn Prior to joining theRebellion, Olin was an experiencedfreighter pilot and freelance bountyhunter. While contracting with theAzzameens, he became a very closeand trusted friend of Aeron. It wasn’tlong before the entire Azzameen familyadopted him as one of their own.

Emkay He is a heavily modified KalibacIndustries MK-09 Maintenance Droid. Hehas had many internal modificationsthat allow him to repair, pilot andcopilot most light to medium vessels, including starfighters. He is extremelyjealous of other droids and itching forcombat. In fact, his enthusiasm foraction is so pronounced, there havebeen discussions about tweaking hisaggression circuits.Dunari A close friend and priorbusiness partner of your father, Dunarinow is sole proprietor of one of themost notorious casinos in the galaxy.Although he often deals in questionablegoods, his loyalty and friendship withthe Azzameens is beyond doubt.

Family EnemyK’Armyn Viraxo He’s patriarch of theViraxo family and head of the shippingconglomerate, Viraxo Industries. Viraxois a formidable enemy, and theAzzameens are not in Viraxo’s favour. The Viraxo have dominated the localshipping lanes for years, mostly due totheir coercive tactics and close ties withthe Empire. With the growth of TwinSuns Transport Services, the Viraxofamily is not likely to give up theirposition without a fight.

For the Azzameens, every day is abattle for survival in the world ofcommerce. And with the war betweenthe Rebel Alliance and the Empirelooming in the background, the fate ofyour entire family depends on yoursuccess.

Your FamilyMembers

Tomaas Azzameen Your father hasbeen the head of the family shippingcompany, Twin Suns TransportServices, since its inception, as well asleader of the family. His decisions areusually derived from calm, butcalculated, reflection. His success atmaking the family business grow hascaused a rivalry with Viraxo Industries,a less-than-honest shipping businesswith ties to the Empire.

Antan Azzameen Your unclecofounded the family cargo companywith your father. He tries his best tokeep the family neutral and avoidpossible reprisals from the Empire, especially after the narrow escapefrom Hoth. “My first and foremostconcern is the Azzameen Family,” heonce stated. “It is not healthy tobecome involved in the strugglebetween the Empire and the Rebels. Our only enemies are the Viraxo.”

Galin Azzameen Your oldest brotherand, appropriately, first in line toinherit the family business. Havingalways been the quiet, brilliant sibling,Galin is destined to follow Tomaas’footsteps. Like Tomaas, his strongbeliefs in the distinction between rightand wrong have inspired a naturalsympathy to the Rebel cause just short of allegiance.

Emon Azzameen Your middle brotherand second in line to inherit the familybusiness. He’s a skilled pilot whose hottemper sometimes affects his betterjudgment. If there’s a fight nearby,Emon is probably involved. Aeron oncesaid, “Trouble clings to Emon like ironfilings to a magnet, and he wouldn’twant it any other way.”

Aeron Azzameen Your older sister iswell- known as an ingenious computerhacker and systems slicing expert. She’s open to new ideas and opinions, but can be strong-willed once her mindis made up. Olin Garn is the onlyperson outside of blood relatives toexperience her sensitive and caringnature. You, though, have always beenher favourite in the family.

You canalso transfer energy from yourweapons to your shields by using the ‘(apostrophe) and “ (quote) keys, andtransfer energy from your shields toyour weapons by using the ;(semicolon) key. This interplay between energy, shieldsand lasers, called the Energy Array, is

the most crucial aspect of yourstarfighter. It allows you to control thepower output to each of your systems, allocating as much or as little power asneeded. Think of it as a central batterythat all systems draw from. When allsystems are charging at maintenancerates, shields and lasers will decreaseas damaged or used. To recharge oneof your systems, you must take poweraway from the engines to redirect it tothe system that needs recharging.

If you have a long list, press the UP andDOWN ARROW keys to see all the craft.Craft names will appear as Unknownuntil the craft have been identified.• Damage Assessment Displays the condition of your craft’s systems. If theyare damaged, it gives you the timeremaining until they are repaired.• Radio Messages Displays all radiocommunications you’ve received sincethe start of the mission. If the list is long, press the UP and DOWN ARROW keys toread all the messages.• Mission Goals Displays the missionobjectives you must achieve (in yellowtext), the objectives that have beenachieved (in green text), the goals toprevent (in blue text), and theobjectives you failed to accomplish (inred text). Some missions will have anumber in parenthesis next to a goal. This is displayed when the objective ofa mission is to protect or destroy apercentage of craft, and will beupdated during your mission. As themission progresses, new missionobjectives will be displayed. You’ll alsosee the mission outcome, which willeither be unresolved, victory or loss.• Mission Score Displays your name, score, and number of kills you’veachieved in your current mission. Duringthe races in the Pilot Proving Ground, thescore lists the players according to theirplaces in the current contest.

Combat Multiview Display (CMD)In the lower middle section of yourcockpit, you’ll see the CombatMultiview Display, or CMD. It will showthe image of any friendly or enemycraft, station, buoy, or mine you’vetargeted, its name, what activity it’sdoing, along with the followinginformation once you have identifiedthe target:• SHD% Shows the strength of thetargeted craft’s shields.

• HULL% Shows the percentage of thetargeted craft’s hull that is intact. Ifyou’ve destroyed your target’s shields, you’ll begin decreasing its hull integrity. When the percentage reaches 0, yourtarget will be destroyed.• SYS% Shows the percentage of thetargeted craft’s systems that arefunctioning properly. Damage to thesesystems can only be inflicted with ionweapons.• Distance Shows the distance fromthe targeted craft to your craft, inkilometres.

Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance16

For example, if your ship’s shields havetaken damage, you must recharge theshields. When you increase the shieldcharge rate, your ship draws the powerfrom the engines. Therefore, eventhough your ship remains at the samethrottle rate, it will travel at adecreased speed with lessmanoeuverability. Conversely, if youneed to get somewhere in the shortestamount of time, redirect all power tothe engines by dropping the laser andshield charge rates to minimum.• Engines Engines are controlled bythrust. You do not have direct chargingcontrol of engine power. When power isredirected to or from lasers, shields orthe beam weapon, it is the engine levelthat increases or decreases. You may beat 100 percent throttle, but if anothersystem is drawing power from theengines, you may not travel at full speed. • Lasers When your laser recharge rateis at mid-level, laser cannons rechargeat maintenance level. As laser cannonshots are fired, laser power will dissipateuntil it is recharged. If the display isbelow the mid-level line, laser cannonsare charging at a decreased rate, andyour ship will lose laser power even ifyou are not firing them. When thedisplay shows above mid-level, your lasercannons are recharging and willcontinue to recharge until they are atfull capacity. You can quickly transferenergy to your lasers from your shieldsystem, if your craft is equipped withone. Increase your laser recharge rateonce you get into heavy combat.• Shields If your ship is equipped withshields, they will have two levels. You

may double charge your shields byincreasing your shield recharge rateuntil both of the first and second tiersare full. If the shield level display isbelow mid-level, your shields will losepower, even if your ship is not beingdamaged. Like your laser system, youcan alternatively transfer energy toyour shields from your lasers. Rechargeyour shields if you’ve taken a lot of hits.

MultifunctionDisplay (MFD)These two displays, located in the twolower corners of the cockpit, give youimportant mission information.Pressing the DELETE key brings up theleft MFD, and the PAGE DOWN keybrings up the right MFD. The displaythat has the brighter border is the activeMFD. Press the inactive MFD key (eitherDELETE or PAGE DOWN) to make it theactive MFD. Press this key again to turnthe MFD off. Press the LEFT and RIGHTARROW keys to cycle through thesedisplay modes within the active MFD:• Flight Commands This MFD modecontains the interface for giving ordersto your wingmates and support craft.(See the In-FlightCommunication/Wingmates Commandssection on page 22 for detailedinformation and instructions.)• Friendly Craft List Displays a list offriendly craft in the area, along withinformation about shield and hulldamage they’ve sustained, and their targets. To identify a craft, target it, then fly close to it (thedistance varies from craft to craft). You’ll then see the craft’s name, alongwith other important statistics, displayed on your CMD. To inspect acraft, target it, then fly within about0.5-0.2 km of it. A description of theship’s contents will appear on your CMD.

Selecting andFiring Cannonsand WarheadsDepending on the craft you’ve chosen, and the way you’ve configured it,you’ll have a variety of cannons andwarheads to fire at a target. Press theW key repeatedly to cycle through thedifferent available weapons for your

craft. If your craft has more than oneof the same type of weapon, such aslaser cannons, you can press the X keyto link their fire, so they’ll all fire at thesame time. However, doing this willslow down your rate of fire. On certaincraft, you can even link lasers and ioncannons together using the X key.Press the Z key for gun harmonisation.(Gun Harmonisation determines thedistance at which your lasers willconverge to a single point. Most craftdefault to automatic, which means thatlasers will automatically converge atthe distance of the currently targetedcraft. The harmonisation can also bemanually changed. Some older craft, like the Z-95 Headhunter, do not haveautomatic harmonisation, so they mustalways be adjusted manually.)

T Y P E S O F C A N N O N S• Laser Cannons The galaxy’s most commonly used weapon, these firebolts of coherent light that inflictsignificant damage.• Ion Cannons These weapons areuseful for disabling craft. Its drawbackis that it has a shorter range than alaser cannon.• Turbolasers Advanced lasercannons typically found only onstarships, these awesome weaponscause much more damage than a lasercannon and can also go farther.

HOS T I N G YOUR OWNI N T E RN E T G AM EThis section helps you host and joinInternet games without a matchmakingservice such as the MSN Gaming Zone.

Setting up your own Internetgames can be somewhat difficult forless experienced Internet users. If youhave trouble, try playing X-WingAlliance on the MSN Gaming Zone. Itreally simplifies the connection processand provides a place to meet otherplayers.

Advanced users will probably beable to find players in an X-WingAlliance room using an IRC Chatprogram, or a pop-up Chat program. Inan IRC Chat room, you can arrange agame and exchange the IP Address, asmentioned in Step 3 below. Pleaseconsult the Glossary on page 62 formore information on IRC.

SUGGESTED STEPS FOR HOSTINGAN INTERNET GAME1 Connect to the Internet.2 Determine your IP Address. Thisnumber is usually different each timeyou connect. You can use the IPConfiguration Viewer (included withWindows 95 or 98) to determine yourIP Address. See the section entitledUseful Internet Utilities Included withWindows 95 or 98 below for details.3 You will need to give your current IPAddress to anyone interested in joining

your game. If you are playing with afriend, you could e-mail them thisnumber or call them (if you haveaccess to a phone that isn’t tied up byyour connection to the Internet).4 Launch X-Wing Alliance andchoose to host a TCP/IP multiplayergame by following the Hosting a Gameinstructions on page 49.5 Once the game is active and you arewaiting in the Multiplayer Optionsscreen, your opponent will be able tojoin using the IP Address you gavethem. Just wait until they show up inthe game.JOINING AN INTERNET GAME1 You will need to obtain the IP Addressof the computer hosting the game. Youcould arrange the game online throughan IRC Chat program or obtain theaddress via e-mail or other means. Thisnumber will usually change every timethe host connects to the Internet, so youneed to obtain the host’s current IPAddress before joining a game.2 Launch X-Wing Alliance andchoose to join a TCP/IP multiplayergame by following the Joining a Gameinstructions on page 51.3 Select the TCP/IP protocol as yourservice provider.4 Enter the IP Address when promptedand click OK. Be sure to enter thenumber exactly and include periods toseparate the numbers. A valid numberwill look something like this:199.3.89.200

5 Once you have entered a valid IPAddress and clicked OK, X-WingAlliance will search for the game. Ifthe game isn’t found, click the LEFTARROW button to go back and try

If a table is unoccupied, a hosticon will appear. To host a game, click

the Host icon and wait for other playersto join. Use the chat feature to recruitother players. When all players arelogged on and ready to go, clickLaunch to begin. NOTE: If you arehosting a game and decide to quit, thefirst player who joined your game willbecome the host. 10 You can also join a game hosted byanother player. Move your mouse overa table and click Join to add your nameto the game, and wait for the host tolaunch it. Next to each player’s name isa latency indicator. The latencyindicator shows how fast your currentconnection is to each player. If you arejoining a game, it is recommended thatyou connect to a host with a greenlatency indicator. 11 If you have any problems, see theHelp page for more details.

Playing X-WingAlliance on theInternetX-Wing Alliance uses DirectPlay, themultiplayer component of DirectX 6.0.DirectPlay has support for TCP/IP, thenetwork protocol used on the Internet. This means that you can challenge afriend to a X-Wing Alliance gameanytime, provided you have access tothe Internet via an Internet ServiceProvider (ISP).

G E T T I N G S T A R T E DWe’ve provided some usefulinformation to help you play X-WingAlliance directly over the Internetwithout the MSN Gaming Zone in caseyou want to set up your own game.

InternetPerformance Tipsfor X-WingAlliance

YOU NEED A QUALITYCONNECTION TO THE INTERNET.The Internet is always changing and is

unpredictable by nature. If you haveperformance problems while playingonline, you might want to disconnectfrom your ISP and reconnect to attemptto get a better connection. You may alsohave a better experience by playing atother times of the day or night, whenthe Internet is less congested. Somecommercial membership online servicesthat offer Internet access may notperform adequately. An independent or

local Internet Service Provider willgenerally offer the best performance.

CONNECT TO THE INTERNET USINGYOUR MODEM’S HIGHEST SPEEDPOSSIBLE. When you connect to your ISP, you willsee a message Connected at 28800 bpsor something similar. This is especiallyimportant if you are the host for anInternet game.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO HAVE ALOW LATENCY CONNECTION. A latency of 500 ms (milliseconds) orless between players is acceptable; it isrecommended that you have an averagelatency of 300 ms or less. Refer to thePING command in the Useful InternetUtilities Included with Windows 95/98

Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance60

again. Carefully reenter the IP Address.6 When the game is found, click thegame name, then click the RIGHTARROW button to connect and proceedto the Multiplayer Options screen.

Useful Internet Utilities Includedwith Windows95/98

I P C O N F I G U R A T I O NV I E W E RThis utility allows you to view yourTCP/IP settings, such as your IP address. To join an Internet game, you will needto know the IP Address of the computerhosting the game. The host can use theIP Configuration Viewer to identify hisIP address and give this number to youso that you can find his game on theInternet. To obtain your IP Address:1 Connect to your ISP.2 Click the Start button.3 Then click Run.4 Type WINIPCFG, and press ENTER to display the IP Configuration Viewer.5 Click the arrow to the right of thedrop-down box and select PPP Adapterfrom the list (if necessary).6 Make note of the number in the IPAddress window. This is your currentInternet IP Address. You will need to givethis number to others who wish to joinyour Internet game. This address willusually change every time you disconnectand re-connect to your ISP. You can nowminimise the viewer and your IP addresswill be displayed on the taskbar.

P I N GYou can use the DOS-based PINGcommand to determine latencybetween you and the host. To use thePING command: 1 Click on the Start menu, then choosePrograms.2 Click MS-DOS Prompt to open a DOSwindow.3 At the MS-DOS Prompt, type PINGfollowed by the IP address of the host andthen press ENTER.

For example:C:\Windows>ping 199.3.89.200 <Enter>

You will then see something like this:Pinging 199.3.89.200 with 32 bytes ofdata:Reply from 199.3.89.200: bytes=32time=296ms TTL=128Reply from 199.3.89.200: bytes=32time=302ms TTL=128Reply from 199.3.89.200: bytes=32time=331ms TTL=128Reply from 199.3.89.200: bytes=32time=290ms TTL=128

The PING command will “ping” the hostfour times and return the aboveinformation. The number followingtime= is your latency. An averagelatency of 500 ms (milliseconds) or lessis generally acceptable for playing X-Wing Alliance, but the lower thisnumber the better your gameexperience will be. A “Ping time” of300 ms or less (average) is optimal forplaying X-Wing Alliance.NOTE: If you get Request timed out one ormore times while pinging a host, you willlikely experience poor performance whileplaying with that host. Try reconnectingto your ISP and pinging again to see ifyour connection improves.

whenever you connect to the Internet. You should use the IP ConfigurationViewer to obtain this number if youare hosting an Internet game. Refer tothe IP Configuration Viewer in theUseful Internet Utilities Included withWindows 95/98 section on page 59 formore information.

IPX (Internetwork PacketExchange) Network protocol used in NovellNetware-compatible networks. Mostcommonly used protocol for LANs.Some commercial gaming servicessuch as Kali and MSN Gaming Zone’sZoneLAN are designed to allow IPXgames to be played over the Internetusing custom software. This softwareconverts IPX packets to TCP packets fortransmission over the Internet. X-Wing Alliance is supported directlyby the MSN Gaming Zone so there is noneed to play it using ZoneLAN.

IRC (Internet Relay Chat) Using an IRC program (not includedwith X-Wing Alliance, but available asshareware from many sources on theInternet), you can connect to chatrooms across the country. It is likely thatyou can find chat rooms dedicated toInternet gaming or specifically, X-Wing Alliance, in which you canexchange IP Addresses and arrangeInternet games.

ISP (Internet ServiceProvider)A company or service that provideslocal dial-up access to the Internetusing your modem, usually for a

monthly fee. Some online services offerInternet access as part of a number ofservices. These types of ISPs may notbe adequate for online gaming due tothe inherent latency caused by theoverhead of their proprietary services.

LAN (Local Area Network) Two or more computers connectedtogether with network adapter cards andnetwork cable.

LATENCY Latency, or Internet lag as it iscommonly referred to, is a measure (inmilliseconds) of the amount of time thatit takes for data to travel from onecomputer to another and back, over anetwork or the Internet. This lag timecan be measured using the PINGcommand. (See the Useful Utilitiessection on page 59 for moreinformation on the PING command andlatency). Latency is usually not an issueon a Local Area Network, but on theInternet, excessive latency can causegame performance to degradesubstantially. Therefore, when playing anygame over the Internet, it is important tohave a low latency connection. Highlatency can cause poor multiplayerperformance and can decrease stability.

NETWORK PROTOCOL The method, or language, thatcomputers use to communicate witheach other over a network or theInternet. For computers to be able tocommunicate over a network, theymust share a common protocol. It iscommon for Windows 95/98 computersto use more than one protocol at the

Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance62

section on page 59 for moreinformation. Some online membershipservices that offer access to the Internet(through their proprietary dial-upservices) have high latency and may notperform well with X-Wing Alliance.

THE HOST SHOULD BE THEFASTEST MACHINE IN THE GAME. It is always a good idea to have the fastestmachine in a multiplayer game be thehost. If you are on the Zone and don’t havea really fast machine, you should joingames hosted by other people on fastermachines, rather than hosting yourself. The basic rule of thumb is the faster theframe rate on the host machine, the betterthe game will be for all players. A fastmachine running too high of a resolutionthat yields a less than optimal frame ratewill result in poor performance overall.

Glossary ofInternet-RelatedTerms

BANDWIDTH The amount of data that can betransmitted or received in a givenamount of time. For example, a 28.8modem can send and receive at 28.8 kbps(kilobits per second) and an ISDN cardcan transmit at speeds ranging from 56Kps (Kilobytes per second) to 128 Kps.

CLIENT (also see Host)In multiplayer gaming, a client refers toa person who is joining a networkgame that has been created by anotherplayer. The player that creates the gameis referred to as the host (or server).

DIRECTX DirectX is the API (ApplicationsProgramming Interface) that X-WingAlliance uses to access your computer’shardware. DirectX has been developed byMicrosoft to integrate into the Windows95/98 operating system and providesgames with a standard method of directaccess to the advanced features of yourcomputer’s hardware, without having todevelop specifically for that hardware.DirectX is made up of five components:Direct- Draw for 2D display capabilities,Direct3D for 3D display, DirectSound forsound capabilities, DirectPlay formultiplayer capabilities, and DirectInputfor input devices such as mice, keyboardsand joysticks.

HOST (also see Client) The host is the computer that createsthe multiplayer game for others to join. The host’s computer also handles a lotof the chores associated withcommunication between participantsin a multiplayer game.

INTERNET The Internet is an internetwork, ornetwork of smaller networks thatspans the entire globe. Since itsinception in the 1970s, the Internet hasgrown to epic proportions and, inessence, has become a public network.

IPADDRESS (Internet ProtocolAddress)This is a number, commonly referred toas an IP Address, that is assigned to allcomputers on a TCP/IP network. YourISP assigns one of these to you

same time for compatibility withvarious networks. Common protocolsare IPX, NetBEUI, and TCP/IP.

NULL MODEM CABLE A null modem cable is a serial cablewith the send and receive wiresreversed. Direct serial play requires anull modem cable to be connected toan available serial port on eachcomputer. This can be a special cableacquired from your local computerstore, or you can attach a null modemadapter to a standard serial cable tomake a null modem cable. Serialcables (without a null modem adapter)and parallel cables are not supportedby X-Wing Alliance.

PACKETA single unit of data sent over a networkor the Internet. When computerscommunicate with each other, theygroup their data into a form called apacket. Each packet of information isthen addressed so that it can find its wayto the intended recipient. Games workbest if each packet sent by the game isreceived intact and in a timely manner. A problem that can happen onovercrowded networks and especially theInternet is that packets can get lost ordropped. In this case, the packet isresent, requiring extra work for thesending computer and creating moredata that needs to be sent through yourmodem. Excessive dropped packets cancause performance problems duringgameplay, and strange phenomena canoccur. Try playing at different times toavoid prime-time congestion of the

Internet and you will most likely seebetter performance.

PING This is a DOS command line program(included with Windows 95/98) thatallows you to measure latency betweenyour computer and another computeron a TCP/IP network or the Internet. Itsends a small amount of data to an IPAddress you specify and awaits aresponse. When it gets a response fromthe other computer, it will display (inmilliseconds) how long it takes for thedata to make the trip over the network. This is called “pinging” the host.

PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) You must have a PPP account with anInternet Service Provider (ISP) to playX-Wing Alliance on the Internet. Ifyou can browse the Web, you mostlikely have this type of account.

TCP/IPThis is a network protocol used on LANsand the Internet. You need this protocolloaded and configured properly to playTCP/IP games on the Internet. If you areconnected via modem, you should havethis protocol configured for use with aDial-Up adapter. We recommend thatyou use Microsoft’s TCP/IP protocol thatis supplied with Windows 95/98. Thirdparty TCP/IP software has not beenfully tested with X-Wing Alliance.
