How Is a Hard Hat Constructed?A helmet-like hat that protects the worker’s head from any falling objects or from any workplace hazard impacts. A typical hard hat consists of two parts: the harness and the protective outer-layer.

How Is a Hard Hat Constructed?

Two Types of Hard HatsType 1 – Made to protect the head

from objects falling from above.

Type II – Made to protect the head from blows on top of the head as well as on the side and back.

How To Take Care of Your Hard Hat

First Time Inspection• Ensure that you have proper type

and class for job• Assemble to manufacturer’s

specifications• Hat should be snug but not too tight

– should not slip, bind or irritate skin

Regular Inspection• Inspect for cracks, gouges, flaking,

chalking and replace if severe• Check harness straps for fraying,

cuts or tearing and replace if needed• Adjust fit as needed with each wear

How to Wear (And Not to Wear) A Hard Hat

• Adjust harness to insure that there is 1 to 1 ¼ inch clearance from hat to head.

• Do not change the shell or harness

• Do not drill holes in outer shell• Use manufacturer’s

recommended harness for shell

• Do not wear anything, like a sock cap of ball cap, under a hard hat

• Avoid using a hard hat as an extra pocket – do not store anything between hat and harness

• Follow manufacturer’s recommendations regarding stickers

• Replace any hard hat that has been dropped or forcibly struck

• Replace any hard hat that shows signs of wear such as, chips, cracks, gouges, flaking, or dents

• Avoid wearing a hard hat backwards
