THE HARD HAT  2

President’s Message  Hello, fellow NAWIC members!   Wow!   My  year  is going  fast.    It  hit home on Election Night.   What  a wonderful  evening  at Sterle’s to see so many of our members come forward to serve next year.  If you did not attend, take a moment to read the minutes and offer your congratulations and support to the incoming Board.  Our golf outing was an amazing success.    I want to offer a special thank you to Lynn Gaukin, Karen Torrence and Leslie Wheeler, along with all our volunteers, who made  it a great day for all.    In a year when we are going  to need some extra  funds  for Forum, our members and our member companies came through for us!  I was also pleased to see some new donors and also to see so many new members taking part.  This continued momentum is what makes us NAWIC strong!  Thank you all.  A few of us attended the Goodtime for Design Cruise on Friday, the 13th.  With that auspicious date  in mind,  I threw all caution to the wind and boarded the boat.   The weather cooperated and it was a great time.  As a note, please take a moment to read my article on making reservations for meetings.   We are  having  a  pretty  hard  time with  late  and  cancelled  reservations.    Also,  please  note  the reservation  deadline  is  Tuesday,  July  1  for  the  Thursday,  July  10 meeting.    Please  try  to attend.   We have  lots of door prizes and will be raffling off the necklace and bracelet that will benefit Relay for Life.  It will be a good time in a beautiful setting!  Speaking of Relay for Life, I attended a team meeting and found out what it was all about.  Not only is this for a great cause, but the event is fun with lots of things happening around the clock.  Check out  the  schedule of events, sign up  to walk  if you can, and even a  small donation will help.  We are on track for meeting our goal.  With your help, I know we can do it!  Happy, happy summer!   Bonnie

NAWIC:    National  Association  of  Women  in Construction

Region  4:    NAWIC  is  divided  into  14  regions.  Region 4 covers  five  states  (Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan,  Ohio  and West  Virginia)  and  is  the largest  region  in  respect  to  the  number  of members.  There are 21 chapters in our region.

Regional Director:  Each region is represented by a  director  that  serves  on  the  national  board.  The  director  presides  over  all  regional  events/activities  and  attends  to  the  needs  of  the chapters.    The  director  is  elected  by  the members  of  their  region  and  their  term  is  for two (2)years.  Even numbered regions expire on even  years;  odd  numbered  regions  expire  on odd years, allowing for a one year overlap.  The regional directors are elected at Forum.

Convention:   Convention  is  the  annual,  national conference  of  NAWIC  typically  held  each September.   NAWIC members  from the United States  and Canada,  international  affiliates  and event  sponsors  come  together  for  this  event.  The conference consists of four days of keynote speakers,  professional  workshops  and association workshops.    Installation of national officers and directors also take place.

Forum:    Forum  is  a  regional,  spring  conference where the region’s chapters come together for a three  day  event  full  of  educational  and networking opportunities  via keynote  speakers and workshops.

APC:    The  Annual  Planning  Conference  is  a regional,  one  day  event  typically  held  in October or November on a Saturday.  This is an opportunity  for  newly  elected  officers  and  all

members  to  plan  the  new  year.    Workshops focus on officer job descriptions and committee functions.

NEF:  To fulfill the educational goal of NAWIC, the association  created  the  NAWIC  Education Foundation  in  1973.    NEF  is  incorporated separately  from  NAWIC.    NEF  provides certification  programs  related  to  the construction  industry,  K‐12  programs  that promote  the  construction  industry,  provides online health and safety programs and provides additional  construction‐related  educational opportunities.

NFSF:   NAWIC Founders’ Scholarship Foundation provides  scholarships  to  individuals  pursuing  a college  degree  based  on  specific  criteria.    The foundation  is  administered  by  past  NAWIC national presidents.

Region 4 Forum 2015  As you know, Cleveland Chapter will host the Region 4 Forum from April 17 to April 19, 2015.    Hosting forum is not possible without the help and support of every member in our Chapter.  You will find a list of committees attached to this newsletter.  Those highlighted are in need of a chairperson or persons; however, if there is any committee you are interested in, please contact the chairperson and let them know you want to help them out.  Another pair of hands is always welcome.  Please call Pia Foss, CIC 216.367.8096 (work) or 216.533.2753 (cell) to let me know if you are interested in chairing a committee, helping on a committee or if you have any questions.    Let’s work together to make Forum 2015 an event to remember!

Membership Meeting Reservations  Please take a moment to read the following rules regarding reservations for membership meetings:

1.  Reservations are due the Monday prior to the Thursday meeting.    In special circumstances, reservations must be made earlier.  Please note JULY meeting reservations for Thursday, July 10, by contract, are due Monday, July 1.

2.  A  reservation made  is a  reservation paid.   Reservations cancelled after  the deadline must be paid by  the member.   NAWIC  is required to pay for the number of dinners ordered by the deadline.

3.  Substitutions  for dinners are becoming  increasingly difficult.   We always  try  to have a vegetarian option available, but please remember  that we  are working with  hotels  to  keep  the  costs  low.    They  cannot  always  accommodate  us  and  cannot  honor “special” requests.  Should you wish to dine prior to the meeting, there is no charge for the meeting only.  Just indicate such when you make your reservation.  That way, the hotel will furnish enough chairs.

Thank you for your consideration.  ~Bonnie
