RENSSELAER, IN —Talbert Manufacturing, aleader in the specialtybuilt trailer and transportsystem industry, launch-es its 50CC/RP HybridTrailer. Combining thebenefits of a close couplelowbed design with aroller paver model, the50CC/RP offers a longerloading incline and bestin class lift capacity ofany trailer on the market. This allows the hybridtrailer the ability to haula greater range of equip-ment, from loaders andexcavators to rollers andpavers. Additionally, thespecialty design providesversatility for a larger au-dience of contractors in-

cluding general construc-tion, grading, excavationand pavement.

With a deck length of

26-feet, the new50CC/RP offers the spacefor full construction fleetloads, while also featur-

ing a specially-designedslope to allow easy trans-port of rollers and pavers.

Clark Equipment was started in 1920 by H. DuaneClark in Syracuse, NY as Clark Concrete, a truckingcompany with a small fleet of Mack dump trucks.Clark Concrete evolved with the concrete industryuntil around 1970. As with many family businesses, through the years the sons and grandsons alsobecame involved. In the early 1970s DW Clark RoadEquipment Company, focusing mainly on construc-tion equipment, was developed and headed up byDonnie Clark, Lyndon Clark and Gerry Tracey whileClark Concrete continued to operate in the concretebusiness. Within a few years DW Clark RoadEquipment evolved into Tracey Road Equipment. TheClark Concrete Company continued to focus on theconcrete business through the mid 2000s. Around2005 the company focus turned to new and usedequipment sales and rental, headed by Adam Clark.Adam mentions, “We decided to move out of the con-crete business and focus on the sales and rental ofcontractor-based construction equipment.” ClarkEquipment rents, sells, and delivers plus will providetrade evaluations and also purchase quality usedequipment.

“We had a nice Genie S40 Boom lift advertised inHard Hat News. John Scott with the Town of Kirklandcalled to buy it. We delivered the machine, and theydemo it for a little while to get comfortable with it,”Adam explained. While talking with Adam during themachine trial, John Scott discovered that LyndyClark, Donnie Clark and Gerry Tracey were all part ofDW Clark Road Equipment back in the 70s and early80s. “As it turned out, the Town of Kirkland still hasa Walters Snow Fighter that my father Lyndy had per-sonally sold to the town back then. John and I decid-ed on the spot to call up my father and ask him ifthere was any warranty left on the rig he had soldthem 40 years ago! That put a smile on all our facesas we laughed knowing that 40 years later I am fol-lowing in their footsteps. The equipment world is asmall one, and we have a lot of fun with it.

“If anyone has any ‘chotchke’ like a DW Clark RoadEquipment calendar, or whatever from the 70s, I’dlove to grab it, frame it, and give it to my father, UncleDonnie, and Gerry Tracey. I know those three guyshad a lot of fun when they were first starting out inthe business together and would really appreciate it.”

The design slopes from the bottom up tocreate a more moderate incline over agreater distance, approximately a thirdof the deck length. Finish height at thefront of the main beams is 8-3/4-inch-es. Additionally, the trailer features abolt-on ramp to provide a more gradualload angle at the rear; 15 degrees ratherthan the standard 35 degree angle. The50 ton capacity 50CC/RP offers a deckwidth of 8-feet, 6-inches and a low deckheight of 20-inches.

Designed for ease of operation, load-ing and unloading, the 50CC/RP Hybrid

is a non-ground bearing hydraulicgooseneck trailer. Air ride suspensionprovides a smoother ride, while Tal-bert’s +3 / -3 control system allows fastand easy height adjustment of the low-er and back end.

The 50CC/RP is four axle capable, of-fering even greater versatility. It fea-tures three axles with fourth axle pin-onconfiguration. Axle capacity is 25,000-pounds each. To accommodate varyingstate laws, the trailer offers a dual king-pin setting of 108 and 90.

Built for strength and reliability, the

50CC/RP features a 4 main beam de-sign and T1, 100,000 PSI minimumyield steel construction. The loadingramp is wood filled and double hingedto provide strength and traction neededfor heavy equipment. To ensure a solidbase for any load, Aptiong flooring offersproven performance and durability.Other standard features include rearloading fenders, LED lights, strobes andbattery backup.

Talbert’s newest trailer was designedfor Hale Trailer Brake & Wheel, a Tal-bert dealer for more than 20 years, headquartered in Voorhees, NJ. Hale’sConcord, NC branch partnered withTalbert for the World of Asphalt/AGG1tradeshow and purchased the originalmodel displayed on the show floor. The

new trailer complements Talbert’s fullproduct line, while also enhancing theline for the roller paver market.

Founded in 1938, Talbert Manufac-turing provides the most complete lineof heavy haul trailers and specializedtransportation equipment for the com-mercial, industrial, military and govern-ment sectors; and in applications thatinclude renewable energy, aerospace, heavy construction, in-plant materialhandling, manufacturing and process-ing systems and much more. Nearly 50 years have passed since thewater tower and colonnaded fountain atState University of New York’s Albanycampus was erected. In those interven-ing years, time and the elements havetaken their toll on this cultural land-mark. The time has come for them to berefurbished. The carillon water towerand main fountain area, located withinthe Podium of the Uptown campus, arenot only central, architectural elementsto the campus, but the 248-foot talltower includes a 311,000 gallon watertank that provides both water volumeand pressure for the domestic, sprinkler, and standpipe systems for all Uptownbuildings. “Basically, we had an existing water

tower, located right in the middle of thecampus.” explained Project ManagerDave Mineau of Jersen Construction, the successful bidder on the project. “Wecompletely gutted it and cleaned thewhole thing out. Now, we’re rebuildingit, all new.”

“There are some areas that we have tokeep the same, maintaining the samefinish,” adds Mitchell Sisson also withJersen. “We’re cleaning with pressurewashing, and re-staining areas as well.” “The challenge with the work on the

fountain is that it is in the middle of thecampus so there is no easy access,”Mineau said. “As a result, everythinghad to come up out of the hole, literallyspeaking. Initially, the reconstructionteam had a real problem accessing thesite,” he added.

“In order to overcome this challenge,

we built an inclined ramp at about a 20degree angle, down into the site. Thehole is 20-feet deep, maybe 17-feet deepfrom where we have an access point. Weliterally need to go over the tops oftunnels and everything else that theschool has located underground. That iswhen we decided to use the two TEREXTA6 Site Dumpers that we bought fromAbele Tractor and Equipment Co., Inc.”“We drive these dumpers up and down

the ramps. Instead of taking a half yardof material out at a time, as you wouldwith a normal power buggy, we are tak-ing 2-½-yards with the TA6. These SiteDumpers have big hoppers, nearly six

feet wide. We load them with mini-exca-vators down in the work area, much aswe would if they were actually dumptrucks. Then, we haul the material out.”“Our storage yard is a quarter of a mile

away, so we fabricated an access paththat we built with rubber matting so wewouldn’t damage existing concrete,” hesaid. “We lined it with orange cones forvisibility.” “With the TA6, we are able to go all the

way from out in the yard, onto the cam-pus and into the jobsite,” he said. “Wetook all of the demolition materials outwith these units, and all the new fill that

we’re bringing in comes in, in the TA6sas well.”

According to a SUNY-Albany pressrelease, the water tower work willinclude the removal of any corrosionand the reinforcement of any deficientstructural elements. New waterproofcoatings will be applied to the interiorand exterior of the water tank and struc-tural system. The tank’s heating system, which protects water from freezing, willbe replaced and updated to modernstandards. The water tower exterior will be cleaned

and it will be re-surfaced to its originalcondition. The carillon will receive a newspeaker system. The water tower’s iconiclighting will be upgraded to an energyefficient, LED lighting system, which willsave energy and add a new specialevent, light-color feature to the campus. Additionally, the plans include replace-ment of the deteriorating stairs leadingfrom the Podium deck to the fountainarea along with replacement of the sin-gle-pane, inefficient, and corroding win-dows around the Lecture Centerconcourse. This will be outfitted with anew energy efficient curtain wall system. The fountain deck will be demolished, aswill the fountain’s mechanical, electri-cal, and plumbing infrastructure. Thereplacement fountain (and systems) willbe more energy and water efficient. Theyultimately will require less annual main-tenance. Mineau reports that there is avery special coating that is going on thefountain floor, furnished by a companycalled Fusion Floors.

“It is used in aircraft carriers andcruise ships,” he said. “It’s about 1/8thof an inch thick and proprietary. It’s realfancy stuff. It makes the pool in thefountain stronger.” Ultimately this project was designed to

not only be a functional restoration ofthe existing structures and their ameni-ties, but it is also meant to create an at-tractive four season location with theaddition of selected trees, gardens, andlandscaping, LED lighting in the base ofthe fountain, and a new, more interac-tive center element with seating area. “We’ll be working on it through next

year,” he said. “We will shut down inNovember, and restart in the spring, maybe April.” For more information onthe Jersen Construction Group, visittheir website at www.jersen.com.

by Stephen WagnerAny company that says, “We’re

committed to enhancing yourprofitability” is not to be takenlightly. They deserve to be studied. One such company is Abele Trac-tor and Equipment in Albany NY.With an equipment lot that fea-tures a seemingly endless numberof tractors and other constructionmachinery, Abele offers the rightequipment for the project, whether the job is a small, medium or large one. For example, Abele Tractor and

Equipment supplied Jersen Con-struction with two Terex TA6s toexpedite refurbishment of thewater tower and fountain restora-tion project at the SUNY-Albanycampus. As one Jersen executivepointed out, “The Terex TA6 SiteDumper is the savior of theproject.” Jersen’s Mitchell Sisson empha-

sized that due to the TA6’s versa-tility and quietness, they wereable to keep the project under bid.The T6’s muffled sound while op-erating, is the key to this projectbecause college classes are insession while construction isunderway. Louder noise wouldclearly be an intrusion. Sissonsaid that at one point the projectwas nine weeks behind due to adelay. However, because theycould work while school was insession, the TA6 brought themback up to speed.

Abele Tractor and Equipment

Co., Inc. is a family-owned busi-ness that has been in operationsince 1875, so they have seentrends come and go for five gener-ations. Abele’s core business isselling, leasing, renting and serv-icing a variety of tractors andequipment. They also sell andservice ground maintenanceequipment for commercial andconsumer customers. During World War II, the companywas issued a priority rating by thegovernment to purchase struc-tural steel and fuel. Following thewar, the business segued mainlyfrom repairing equipment, to sell-ing and servicing constructionand consumer outdoor powerequipment. Exercising what mightwell have been a vision of thefuture, Abele began focusing oncustomers projects, in and aroundAlbany in the 1960s and 70s.

Those projects included thelabyrinthine of state and federalhighways in and around the capi-tol, as well as the New York StateThruway. Abele was also one ofthe first companies to realize thevalue of renting and leasingconstruction equipment to con-tractors in the area. Today, Abelespecializes in the sales and serviceof Kobelco excavators, Kubotaconstruction and industrial equip-ment, ASV track loaders and thefull TEREX line of equipment.More importantly, they offer parts, service, for their rental and leas-ing equipment.

Lou Taylor, account manager forthe Jersen account said that Abelehas more than 175 excavators, 50off-road trucks, and more than 50bulldozers and wheel loaders ofvarious sizes, available for rent orlease. One free phone callreduces likelihood ofincidents to less than1 percent

WASHINGTON, D.C. —Common Ground Al-liance (CGA), the stake-holder-run organizationdedicated to protectingunderground utilitylines and the people whodig near them, on Sept.19 announced findingsfrom its comprehensive2011 Damage Informa-tion Reporting Tool(DIRT) Report.

The report, which isthe sum of all 2011 datasubmitted anonymouslyand voluntarily by dam-age prevention stake-holders, confirmed theimportance of making afree call to 811 to reach alocal one call center asmost critical to safety.

When an excavator no-tifies a one call center be-fore digging, damage oc-curs less than 1 percentof the time, according tothe report. The report alsoestimates the total num-ber of damages could bereduced by 31 percent ifall digging was precededby a locate request.

The 2011 DIRT Reportbenefited from a signifi-cant increase in report-ing from one stakeholdergroup: locators, the pro-fessionals who identifythe approximate locationof underground facilitiesby using paint or flags. The nearly 100,000 addi-tional records submittedto DIRT this year, com-bined with the quality ofthose records, resultedin this year’s data beingthe most complete todate, scoring the highestever Data Quality Index(DQI) since the metricwas introduced in 2008.

“We know that calling811 before digging is thesingle most importantstep in preventing un-derground utility inci-dents, and the growth indata submissions thisyear further affirms thisimportant message,”said Bob Kipp, CGApresident. “The 16 in-

dustries that compriseCGA are continuing toincrease the quality ofour data, which will helpall stakeholders be moreeffective in targetingtheir outreach to theright audiences withmeaningful messages.”

Because more com-plete data was submittedthis year, CGA employeda new approach to esti-mate the total under-ground incidents for2011. The new analysisused a linear regressionmodel for the 11 statesbelieved to have manda-tory damage reporting. The result was that un-derground utility eventscontinue to be a majorproblem, with 330,000incidents estimated lastyear. Although this num-ber represents a newbaseline, the downwardyear-to-year trend in in-

cidents since the report’sinception in 2004 con-tinues to be valid.

The 2011 DIRT Reportexamined the root causesof 80 percent of all eventssubmitted (up from 54percent for 2010), andthe top causes were iden-tified as follows:

• Excavation practicesnot sufficient, 41 percent

• Notification notmade, 26 percent

• Locating practicesnot sufficient, 22 percent

The percentage ofknown incidents listing“Notification not made”as a root causedropped 6 percent from2010 to its lowest pointduring the last fiveyears, demonstratingthe effectiveness of the811 campaign.

As it did in 2010, theDIRT Report again pro-

vided recommendationsto damage preventionstakeholders based onCGA’s data analysis. These include the identi-fication of locator andexcavator best practices, partnering with under-ground infrastructureutilities and industry as-sociations to distributeeducational materialsabout safe excavationpractices and more.

The report also notesthat occupants, farm-ers, building demolition, small fencing, irrigationand landscaping con-tractors were among theleast likely audiences tocall 811 before digging, suggesting that out-reach be targeted tothese groups.

For companies in the crane and rigging industry likeClark Rigging & Rental of Lockport, NY, there is aneed to balance safety with risk each time their equip-ment starts. With large, specialized equipment like thecranes and specialty material movers that they use ona regular basis, they are always alert when they sharethe road with all other drivers as they move the equip-ment to and from a job site. In most cases, their mostprevalent concern is their battle with the force of grav-ity.So it was with this kind of understanding that Clark

Rigging began to take the matter seriously when NikWallenda, family descendent of The World FamousWallendas family, came to company President, David

Clark requesting the equipment and technical supportthat Wallenda needed for his planned crossing of thefalls June 15, 2012. He was looking to Clark Riggingon the American side of Niagara Falls, to help anchorthe high wire suspended between the U.S. andCanada.

“Nik Wallenda walked into our office one day andsaid, ‘I’m going to walk a wire over Niagara Falls,’” saidClark recently. “My brother Steve and I scratched ourheads and thought, ‘OK, Good Luck!’ But by the timehe left we were convinced that this wasn’t a meaning-less stunt but a well engineered, thought out, andprofessional job. This is the kind of job requirementsthat we deal with on a daily basis.”

“It turns out that cranes were an integral part of theproject,” said Dave. “They were instrumental as a wayto elevate and provide tension to the wire. Like somany of the jobs we perform, there was great riskinvolved. Once we had met with the Wallenda team,we realized we were involved with the same kind ofchallenges, we both have to deal with the forces ofgravity and we do it with the utmost respect and plan-ning. We both know that if you fail in any way, theresults are often catastrophic. Together, we were look-ing to balance the risk at hand with all that we knowin the way of safety, to make the project happen.”

For this Wallenda project, the company, POWEREngineers, a global engineering firm, that specializesin installing power transmission lines. POWER Engi-neers planned the actual wire, installation and work-ability of the wire rope used. Their engineers plan andcarry out high line installations under the most chal-lenging conditions in nature. “They chose Clark Rig-ging because of our reputation for professionalism, safety, quality equipment and excellent staff,” saidClark. Dave noted that they called upon O’ConnellElectric for other specialized equipment and expertlinemen for the same reasons.

“I think Nik basically put his life and safety in ourhands,” said Dave. “That’s quite a responsibility, butone we deal with everyday, on every job we do. And,WOW, what a team it turned out to be!”

Dave said that it was assuring to know that theGreat Nik Wallenda had to adhere to the safety/riskratio, just as Dave’s workers do. Nik was required towear a safety line on his historic walk. He had neverused one before and felt it was actually a hazard tohis walk. But, in the end, he wore the tether becauseit was the only way he would be permitted to make

the walk. He knew that there would always be thequestion, “Why no safety harness or fall protection?”if he fell to what would have been, certain death.

The JobsiteThe installation of a 2-inch wire rope over this “Won-

ders of the World” was not easy. In this location, theplanning and preparation was done without theadvantage of it having been done here previously. Noone really knew what the conditions would be. “We knew we would be scrutinized by The Park Serv-

ice and the attempt would be done under criteria thatmade it more complex,” said Dave. “Did that scare theteam?” he asked. “No, it only made us more deter-mined to master the Great Niagara. Everything wentaccording to plan. If you don’t know how this projectworked out, you certainly missed a dramatic, beauti-ful and flawless event that the entire world enjoyed.”In the design of the high wire, POWER relied on tech-

niques they had learned in other industries. Accordingto Peter Catchpole, the senior project manager who ledthe POWER team, “POWER installed micropile an-chors into bedrock to hold the cable at a tension of 30tons (60,000-pounds) by lifting near both anchorswith 170 ton cranes. The cable sagged a mere 35-feetat its midpoint placing it 200-feet above the riverbelow. The POWER team developed some unique en-gineering solutions, such as the installation of a seriesof stabilizing pendulums to eliminate the twisting onthe cable that would have made the effort impossible.”Catchpole added, “POWER successfully handled the

design and overnight installation and teardown of the2-inch diameter cable for Wallenda’s 1,400-foot walkacross the gorge. It was installed overnight in 14hours and removed three days later in seven.”Steve Clark, who serves as Clark Rigging’s vice pres-

ident, noted that installing a 1200' practice wire at theSeneca Niagara Casino was invaluable practice for theinstall team. “We had our 150 ton crane on site toelevate the wire. Anchored at both ends the crane hada 66,000-pound pull on the wire to give it the stabilityand inclines that are required for Nik to practice on.He has never used this large a diameter wire before,so we learned a lot about it.”

“For instance, after we strung the wire, Nik jumpedon it and announced he could not walk it because the

wire was rolling. The team then got out some materi-als, tools and sand bags and fabricated weightedpendulums, hanging them every 200-feet along thewire. We solved that problem but of course thatcreated new ones!” he said.“Officials insisted that there be a rescue basket avail-

able, just in case. The basket couldn't roll past theclamps holding the pendulums but an engineerdesigned different clamps, on the spot, that wouldwork. As the world now knows, the event took placeflawlessly!”Dave said in similar fashion, Clark Rigging takes this

kind of care and concern with every job that they do.From the smallest lift to the most complex heavy proj-ect imaginable, safety trumps production and risktaking. “We at Clark Rigging have adhered to this for-mula forever,” he said. “This has enabled us to have asterling safety record despite tackling the most diffi-cult, risky projects. We approach every project with acareful plan. Our professional staff has built a cultureof safety. The Clark Companies have done that forover 50 years, providing quality service all over NewYork State. The Wallenda project was a high profileproject that got lots of attention, but as I have saidmany times, to many people ‘It’s what we do.’” For more information, contact them at 716 433-4600or 716-695-4860 or via e-mail [email protected].

On the night of the event, Nik Wallenda is lifted into place in preparation for his walk across Niagara Falls.

As expected, there was considerable media on hand for the pre-walk activities.

Wallenda walks on a wire suspended by a Clark Rig-ging crane during a practice session.

On the US side of Niagara Falls, Clark Rigging equip-ment worked to maintain the appropriate tension onWallenda’s high wire.

by Jon M. CaseySean Glennon, vice president of Volvo

CE Shippensburg Operations and Vol-vo’s Gary J. Atkinson, Segment Devel-opment manager for Road, Quarry andAggregate Products, were on hand for awalk around inspection of Volvo’sG946B Motor Grader at the 2012 Worldof Asphalt and AGG-1 Aggregates Fo-rum in Charlotte, NC in March of this

year. For contractors who are lookingfor a motor grader that is able to per-form according to today’s rigorous stan-dards and at the same time, cost less tooperate than most other manufacturer’ssimilar models, the G946B is certainly agrader that requires consideration.

Glennon was excited to say that theplant expansion at the Shippensburg,PA manufacturing plant and recentlydesignated North American Headquar-ters for Volvo CE, will give this facilitythe capability of complete manufactureand assembly of the 900 series motorgraders. He said that some of the com-ponent parts are still being manufac-tured abroad then shipped to the plantfor final assembly. In the future, every-thing will be U.S. made.

As we began our walk around of theG946B, Gary Atkinson’s personal expe-rience with the equipment made the ex-perience extremely informative and in-teresting to an unskilled observer likeme. His patient explanation of how sys-tems worked and what might be impor-tant to a contractor who is looking forthe various advantages that the G946Bhas to offer, made the time spent at thisexhibit, most rewarding.

For example, Gary began by sayingthat the all wheel drive feature on thisgrader, gives the operator more gradingpower and control while performing onthe job. He said that when the grader isequipped with the company’s 8 speed

HTE840 transmission, the Volvo hightorque All Wheel Drive System operatesin forward gears 1-7 and reverse gears1-4. And when equipped with Volvo’sexclusive 11 speed HTE1160 transmis-sion, it operates in forward gears 1-10and reverse gears 1-6. Additionally, itprovides an additional 8500 pounds ofrim pull. When fine grading is called for,the AWD system also provides the abili-

ty to fine grade in Creep Mode usingonly hydrostatic front wheel drive, be-tween 0 - 2.5 mph, when desired.

Gary especially noted the location ofthe teeth on the outside of the circle of

He saidthat the dual gear Circle Drive Systemuses direct acting hydraulic power forincreased turning and holding capabili-ty under full load. The Circle Drive Sys-tem also uses two hardened drive pin-ions and is protected against impactdamage by an overload relief valve asstandard equipment.

“Our transmission placement isunique to the industry,” he added. “Wehave engineered the engine transmis-sion to be beneath the cab and ahead ofthe articulation hinge. This design putsthe weight of the transmission withinthe grader’s wheelbase. This provides

more downward pressure on the bladefor greater productivity. It also makesservicing the transmission easier. Othermanufacturers have the transmissionbehind the engine, toward the tail end

of the grader. Our exclusive locationprovides for greater cutting capability, increased steering control and betterstability on side slopes.”

As we moved to the rear of the grader,Gary highlighted the unique design ofthe grader’s cooling system and theplenum chamber that houses the vari-ous coolers. He said that the doormounted cooling fan is reversible so thesystem is capable of cleaning itself ofdust and debris that might accumulatein the radiators mounted in the sidesand door of the plenum.

“We do not have a stacked cooler coresystem like other brands. This greatlyreduces the likelihood of trashing andoverheating,” he emphasized. “There isa hydraulically powered fan mountedon the exterior of the door that runs in-dependently from the engine. That way,it saves on fuel and horsepower as well.

Hey Fred-We have been using the

same basic accountingsoftware since the busi-ness began ten yearsago…and we’re comfort-able with it, and we knowhow to use it. The prob-lem is that it hasn’t reallygrown with our company, and it can’t do some of thetasks we need it to now.

Mid-range systems costconsiderably more mon-ey, and that’s been hold-ing us back from lookinginto construction-specificaccounting software…buthow do I know when weshould upgrade?

-EvanHey Evan-Let me ask you a ques-

tion: What is it costing you

to stay with the system youhave now? Small businessaccounting systems aregreat tools for many smallcontractors. But growingcontractors — like you —often find that these toolsno longer serve theirneeds. To see if it’s time toupgrade, ask yourselfthese three questions:

1) Does my current sys-tem work the way con-struction works? Morespecifically, does it trackjob costs by tasks or costcodes, and phases? Doesit handle AIA billings, cer-tified payroll, over/underbilling reports and all of

the other construction-specific items?

2) Does the systemadequately handle payrollactivities? For example, automatically calculatingpay rates, deductions andfringes, and multiple tax-ing authorities from a sin-gle timecard? Is it capableof instantly preparingsuch reports as certifiedpayroll, minority compli-ance, workers’ compensa-tion, and 401(K)?

3) Can you accessdetailed job informationwhenever you need it?Are you able to obtain im-portant job cost data on

the fly? Or are you usingspreadsheets and outsideapplications just to com-plete essential functions, such as reporting? Canyou look at a job summa-ry report and drilldownfor details — all the wayto an original timecard orinvoice if needed?

If the answer is “no” toany of these questions, itmay be time to considerupgrading. At the end ofthe day, what you reallyneed to do is determine ifthe benefits of having ac-cess to accurate job dataand construction-specificfunctionality outweigh

the costs of purchasing anew system, spendingtime to learn all its capa-bilities, and so on.

Good luck!-Fred

RALEIGH-DURHAM, NC — RitchieBros. Auctioneers (NYSE and TSX:RBA), the world’s largest industrial auc-tioneer, will conduct a massive miningand earthmoving equipment auction onSept 27, 2012 during the company’sgrand opening auction at its new per-manent auction site in Raleigh-Durham, NC. More than 180 pieces ofmining and earthmoving equipment arealready featured in the auction, includ-ing more than 60 Caterpillar D11crawler tractors, more than 35 Caterpil-lar 777 rock trucks, more than 30 wheelloaders and more — selections so largethat they’re rarely seen in the heavyequipment industry in a single sale. TheSept. 27 unreserved public auction, which is set to take place one day afterthe completion of MINExpo Internation-al 2012 in Las Vegas, is a divestiture ofnon-strategic equipment from West Vir-ginia based Trinity Coal Corporation.Bidders can register and bid in one offour ways: live and in person at theCompany’s Raleigh-Durham, NC auc-tion site; via simulcast and in person atthe Company’s Las Vegas, NV auctionsite; online in real time at www.rbauc-tion.com, or by proxy.

“We have an unprecedented numberof D11’s featured in our SeptemberRaleigh-Durham auction. In fact, thisis more D11’s than we’ve sold in thepast four years of unreserved industri-

al auctions combined,” said John Fair-ley, regional sales manager, RitchieBros. Auctioneers. “This large selectionof mining and earthmoving equipmentis sure to catch the attention of bothdomestic and international buyers. Forthose who are looking for anythingfrom big wheel loaders and crawlertractors to massive rock trucks andmotor graders — this auction showcas-es Ritchie Bros. as the place to gowhen you need mining equipment. And, as with all of our auctions, eachitem will sell to the highest bidder, re-gardless of price-with no minimumbids or reserve prices.”

“Trinity Coal Corp. had been usingthe equipment at their coking and ther-mal coal mining complexes in Kentuckyand West Virginia,” said David Stetson, chief restructuring officer for TrinityCoal Corp.

“Those in the mining industry will knowD11’s are primarily mass earthmovingmachines. The fleet is composed of ‘bigrock job’ type machines that we primarilyused to remove overburden at our coal op-erations in eastern Kentucky and WestVirginia,” added Mr. Stetson. “At one time, our D11 fleet was the largest fleet operat-ing anywhere in the U.S.”

After being in operation for a numberof years, some of the Caterpillar unitsare currently undergoing a refurbishingprocess in preparation for the Septem-

ber auction. All powertrain and under-carriage updates are being conductedby authorized CAT dealers. Detailedequipment information, including high-resolution photos of the equipment, isavailable on our website at www.rbauc-tion.com/bigiron.

More than 60 D11’s in a single auc-tion event is a rare find. Companieslooking for brand new equipment mayhave to face a wait time before acquiringa machine to put to work. “If you’relooking for a brand new D11 (from themanufacturer), you’ll have to add yourname to a wait list and the queue is cur-rently long due to high demand for min-ing equipment in various regions. At theSeptember auction in North Carolina, people will have the opportunity to finda large selection of well maintainedequipment - it’s a big opportunity to ac-quire big iron that you can potentiallyput to work the following day after theauction,” added Mr. Stetson. “There iscurrently high demand for this type ofequipment across the globe, in Canada,Latin America, Asia and even India -with Ritchie Bros. in charge of the auc-tion, buyers in all of these regions andbeyond will have an opportunity to ac-quire quality earthmoving equipment atreasonable prices.”

WEST BEND, WI —Mustang, a leader incompact equipment foragriculture and con-struction markets, ispleased to introduce theall new, vertical lift4000V Skid Steer loader;the world’s most power-ful skid steer loader. The4000V boasts a rated op-erating capacity of4,000-pounds, a truevertical lift height of 144-inches, and an industryleading 99 hp from itsCummins engines. The4000V is truly a beastthat cannot be tamed.

The all new 4000V is atrue vertical lift machine, which means the lift pathfollows a vertical line asopposed to an ‘s’ shapedpath offered by competi-tive vertical lift models.Lifting up to 144-inches,the 4000V can easily loadhigh trailers and trucks. With an unmatched ratedoperating capacity, there

are few jobs this powerfulmachine cannot handle.

“Mustang is excited totake the reigns as theworld’s most powerfulskid steer loader,” saidSean Bifani, productmanager. “The 4000V al-lows Mustang to fulfill itscustomer’s needs forhigh powered, high ca-pacity skid steers. Pairedwith its high liftingheight, the 4000V entersthe high end of the skidsteer loader market, where product optionsare minimal. The 4000Vprovides maximum ca-pacity and the industry’slargest breakout force at9,150-pounds.”
