When the weather is nice like it has been for thepast few weeks here in the Northeast, the thought ofplaying a round of golf is on the minds of many of ourfriends in the construction and landscaping busi-ness. For them, the idea of hopping aboard a golf carand playing their first 18 holes of golf is a rite ofspring. It is one that comes without a thought of thegolf car they are riding in can be used for anythingbut playing golf.

However, for those who have begun to realize howuseful golf cars can be when it comes to movingpeople and “stuff” in the workplace environment, agolf car, or golf car utility vehicle, is quickly becominga useful tool. For businesses like Zema’s Nursery ofStephentown, NY and Maple Lane Nursery in Valatie,NY, a versatile, easy to operate golf car is the productof choice.

According to Joe Zema, the staff at Zema’s Nurseryis quickly coming to realize how their Club Car XRT-900 Utility Vehicle, has become “a must” for theiroperation. Zema, who is a second generation nurs-eryman, works with his brother Matthew and fatherMatteo in the day to day operations of their nurseryand landscaping business that has been selling trees, shrubs and landscaping supplies over the past 38years.

“We normally do a lot of walking during the courseof a day since our facility is so spread out,” said Joe.“We looked into a utility vehicle last year and tookdelivery of it just before Christmas. Already this year,we are just getting started using it and we arewondering how we got by without it for all thoseearlier years. By using our XRT-900, we are findingthat we are more productive and less tired at the endof the day.”

“We have a storage building that is a couple thou-sand feet away from our main work area. In the past,we pushed these small little carts, the type that ourretail customers use to purchase merchandise, toand from the building as a way to move supplies. Now, we use the utility vehicle to do that. We are nowpotting plants and using the vehicle to move them tothe sales area as well. We are finding all sorts of usesfor it as each day passes.”

The XRT-900 electric powered vehicle is quick andeasy to use and it is quiet as well. “One of the primaryconsiderations for us to go with this model wasbecause of how quiet it is,” he said. “Part of the charmof our nursery is how shoppers can come and look atour plants and displays without being disturbed bynoisy equipment as they are doing their shopping. The drone of a motor in the background tends to

detract from the shopping experience. With this quietvehicle, you don’t have that. You can look at theplants and still have the birds chirping in the sur-rounding trees.”

Joe said that he suspects that everyone will becompeting to use the XRT-900 once the season getsbusy, however he’s not certain if his father Matteo, who while being semi-retired and 82 years of age stilloversees the Christmas Tree portion of the operation, will be among those who are clamoring to use the car.

“Dad still likes to get in his pickup truck and go outto the Christmas Tree farm,” said Joe. “But that’s thenice thing about the utility car. In many instances, ittakes the place of the pick up or the skid steer loader, that we used in the past to move supplies and mate-rials. While I oversee the retail and landscapingportion of the business, Matthew heads up the green-house side of the operation. In either case, thevehicle can be useful in both settings.”

Maple Lane Nursery chooses the Carryall 6According to Kip Walsh, of Satch Sales Mobile

Solutions of Menands, NY, when it comes to findingalternatives to larger equipment like tractors andpickup trucks, businesses are choosing a golf carutility vehicle for their transportation needs. Whiletraditional equipment is designed for its ownpurpose, there are numerous applications where asmaller, lighter and more versatile means of movingpeople and materials like a golf car, is the betterchoice.

Walsh said that recently, like Zema’s Nursery, theMartinos, at Maple Lane Nursery in Valatie, NY addeda Club Car Carryall 6 to their operation as well. Hesaid that they have found that when moving tools, plant material and all sorts of other items from “here

Zema's Nursery relies on their Club Car XRT 900 to move everything from Christmas trees to nursery stock. JoeZema finds the nursery's new “tool” to be extremely useful.

to there” around their Columbia County nursery, theCarryall 6 is useful for a number of reasons.

It can move both people and supplies quickly andefficiently. In the confined spaces that are frequentlyfound in the nursery environment, staff memberseither can take the customer to the location of theplants where they can choose the products that theyare seeking, load them into the Carryall 6 and returnto the sales area for checkout. They also can take thecustomer’s order, hop on the Carryall 6, run out tothe nursery for the needed items, then return to theretail area for sale or shipment.

by Jon M. CaseyIn early March, at the Hard Hat

Expo in Syracuse, NY, Kip Walsh, owner of Satch Sales MobileSolutions, Club Car dealer forNew York and surrounding states, shared his thoughts about howimportant and useful a golf car orgolf utility vehicle can be in abusiness setting other than a golfcourse.

Walsh said that today, Club Cargolf cars come in a variety ofconfigurations to meet a busi-ness’s needs. They include twoand four seat models with a folddown rear seat that allows thetransport of people or products, quickly and easily. Additionally, the utility vehicles offer versatileoptions of their own. He says thatthese are not converted golf cars, but units with heavier chassisdesigns, capable of rugged andrough terrain applications. Theseare designed for work and sportsactivities alike.

“There are even four wheel drivemodels like the ones we exhibitedat the Hard Hat Expo in Syracusein March,” he says. “Nurseriesand landscapers like the Carryall6 because it has a lot of cargospace. There is room for bales ofpeat moss and mulch or pallets ofproduct that is loaded directlyonto a customer’s truck or trailer.”

“We offer ‘lift kits’ as an optionfor customers who plan to usetheir vehicles in places where theyneed additional traction or areoperating in rough terrain,” hesays. “These kits raise the entireunit up to a safer level for those

applications. The kits allow for usto install larger tires with betterground clearance over roughterrain.”

Walsh says that a landscaper ormaintenance crew would mostlikely prefer the four wheel driveconfiguration because it givesbetter traction over a wider varietyof terrain.

“In addition to the gasolinepowered version that comes asstandard equipment, Club Caralso offers a diesel powered modelthat has hydraulic attachment foruse with optional attachments,”he says. “It can be outfitted with abucket, fork lift attachment, broom for sweeping parking lotsand sidewalks, a snow blower anda self-powered rotary mower aswell. We offer pull-behind rotarymowers in widths up to 72-inch-es. These can be used individual-ly or in multiple arrangements formowing larger areas likepaddocks or areas that need amower that can get in and out ofthose tight places. With this unit,a customer does not need topurchase a tractor and bush hogto do the same amount ofmowing.”

“One of our more interestingchallenges is to get a prospectivecustomer to consider a golf carvehicle instead of the more tradi-tional piece of equipment to do thejob,” he says. “Often, a customerwill have the need for a vehicle ofsome kind, but is uncertain as towhat the best solution might be tofill that need. If they will considera golf car or golf car utility vehicle

as a way to satisfy that need, theycan frequently be much moreproductive than they might other-wise be. Vehicles are available ingas, electric and diesel versions.”

“In many cases, a golf car canfill the customer’s need for a lotless money, and do a better job inthe process,” he adds. “They areso versatile that once a customerowns a car, they almost immedi-ately find several other uses forthe unit in addition to the reasonfor which they initially rented orpurchased the unit. Used cars arealso an economical alternative fora new one for those who are on amore limited budget.”

Walsh says that while they arealmost exclusively a Club Cardealer, Satch Sales also offers theMOTREC line of vehicles, a prod-uct that is designed for use inindustrial and warehouse applica-tions. Those vehicles can be foundmost often in factories, distribu-tion centers and places wheresmall yet powerful tow vehiclesare a must.

“In a factory setting, theMOTREC vehicle can be used forpulling parts from inventory andmoving them to the assemblyline,” he says. “MOTREC doesoffer some vehicles for other uses, but for most applications like thenursery and landscaping busi-ness, we recommend Club Carutility vehicles.”

Satch Sales Mobile Solutions hasthe Club Car to meet your needs

Carryall models are available in a four wheel drive ver-sion as well as the standard two wheel drive models.

At the recent Hard Hat Expo in Syracuse, NY, a ClubCar Golf Car was seen transporting people to the SkidSteer Rodeo.

David Martino of Maple Lane Nursery is onboard with their Carryall 6, a workhorse around the nursery.

The Carryall 2 model with the enclosed cab can beused for landscaping projects like transporting balesof mulch to where they are needed.

Hey Fred -I’m the new office

manager at a masonrycompany and recentlymet with our CPA for thefirst time. He startedasking me about how Irun overhead allocationreports, but I have toadmit that I was caughtlike a deer in headlights.Exactly what is over-head allocation?

- Laura

Hey Laura -Overhead allocation

can be a difficult conceptto grasp, so I’m glad youasked.

Let’s start with over-head. Overhead is thegroup of costs that arecrucial to keeping yourconstruction company afunctioning businessand to ensure that youcan continue to bid andwork on jobs. The trickypart about these costs, though, is that they arenot directly applied toany given job. Let me ex-plain. Examples of over-

head include rental feesfor office space, electric-ity to run said office, and even some of the of-fice staff’s wages — allnecessities of runningyour business and yourjobs. Without these ex-penses, there would beno office staff to main-tain data, no electricityto run the computers, and perhaps no office atall! You can see why thisis so important.

So when you allocateoverhead, you’re basical-ly distributing all of thenecessary costs of run-ning your business ap-propriately over all ofyour jobs. This is why itis important to consideroverhead allocation in fi-nancial planning andanalysis. In fact, estima-tors should be includingan overhead amount inevery bid to ensure thatthe job’s profit will begreat enough to coverthese fixed costs.

I hope this helps!

- Fred

A quick look around the Skid Steer Rodeo arena atthe 26th Annual Hard Hat Expo held at the New YorkState Fairgrounds in Syracuse, would suggest thatthis year’s competition was taking place in late Mayinstead of the first week in March. With unseasonablywarm weather on tap for the March 7 and 8 events, thousands of visitors to this year’s show enjoyedvisiting outdoor exhibits in weather that had theseconstruction industry members eager to get to workon their priority outdoor projects. Who could blamethem?

“We had a near record crowd,” said Trade Showmanager, Ken Maring, following the show. “The beau-tiful weather made it much easier for people to attendthe show this year. Some years, winter weather is stillvery much a factor during the show, but not this year. The attitude of those who were at the show was muchmore upbeat this year than in recent years. Thiswould indicate that there is an expectant uptick inthe construction industry in the coming weeks. Wewere happy to see our show goers enjoying them-selves the way that they were this year.”

Buzz Barr, fleet manager for Burdick Chevrolet, said that he was happy to see the number of peoplewho were taking advantage of the good weather toattend this year’s Expo. In his company’s exhibit, located in the Main Hall Annex next to the LeePublications, Inc. exhibit, Barr greeted visitors whowere eager to look under the hood of a 2012 special-ly equipped Chevrolet Malibu police cruiser. Thismodel of patrol car has become a popular choiceamong law enforcement officials throughout NewYork State.

Venturing outdoors, the mood was light amongvisitors who were passing between the HorticultureBuilding and the Center of Progress Building, themain exhibit hall for the event. Outdoor exhibits linedthe street in front of the Center of Progress Building,a closed off area designated for this purpose duringthe two day event. Similarly, the adjoining street wasprepared as the venue for this year’s Skid SteerRodeo, a favorite of vendors and attendees alike.

“This event just gets bigger and bigger each year,”said one attendee as she made her way to watchTuesday’s outdoor rodeo. “I enjoy being around heavyequipment and the Hard Hat Expo gives me a chanceto see what’s new in the industry.”

Jim Kring, the Show Staff member who designs the

competition events for the Skid Steer Rodeo and whooversees the setup and teardown of the constructiontrade show said that the unseasonal weather neces-sitated some minor changes in the outdoor competi-tion. “We had to limit the number of turns in the SkidSteer Rodeo this year because there was no snow orice to help lubricate the concrete surface of ourcourse,” he said. “We really enjoy competing in thisnice weather, but the loaders tend to ‘hop’ on thepavement when it is dry. Safety here is our foremostconcern.”

Maring agreed as he worked to supervise thecompetition that featured five skid steer loaders fromas many suppliers. “I want to thank all the exhibitorsand attendees for making our 26th year a successfulone,” he said. “We couldn’t have done this without allof you!” For more information on the Hard Hat Expofor 2013, contact the Trade Show Division of LeeNewspapers, Inc. at 800 218-5586 or online atwww.leepub.com.

KEWANEE, IL — BO-MAG’s BW278AD-4 AMtandem vibratory rolleris equipped with exclu-sive Asphalt Manager IItechnology to delivercontinuously optimizedcompaction perform-ance, regardless of oper-ator experience.

The new Asphalt Man-ager II system measuresand controls the roller’scompaction performanceduring operation, result-ing in unmatched effi-ciency and consistentdensity results. The sys-tem continuously moni-tors the stiffness of theasphalt mat and auto-matically increases ordecreases the com-paction force as needed.A real time BOP displaylets the operator con-stantly monitor the as-phalt surface tempera-ture, material stiffness, roller speed and ampli-tude. Asphalt Manager IIcan also be utilized forproof rolling to allow in-spection of base workprior to paving.

BOMAG’s innovativeECOMODE system auto-matically optimizes theperformance of theroller’s 130 hp Deutz wa-ter cooled diesel engineby matching engine out-put to the power re-quired for compaction. In addition to loweringfuel costs, the system re-duces engine emissionsand jobsite noise.

Offering a workingwidth of 78-inches, theBW278AD-4 AM deliversmaximum frequency of3,000 vibrations perminute (vpm) to quicklyachieve density on variousmixes. Vibration frequen-cy is infinitely variablefrom 2,500 to 3,000 vpm, allowing the rollers to beused in a wide variety ofapplications. The maxi-mum centrifugal force of55,575-pounds providedby the front drum is 35percent higher than unitswithout Asphalt ManagerII, allowing the roller tocomplete compaction infewer passes.

The BW278AD-4 AMoffers enhanced operatorergonomics and con-trols. The cockpit withsliding/swivel seat pro-vides improved operator

comfort and visibility, re-duced fatigue, and in-creased efficiency. Theswivel seat makes it easyfor the operator to adjustpositions while providinga clear view of the rollerdrum edges. When theseat position is reversed, the joystick controls re-verse automatically fornatural right/left, for-ward/back control.
