MESSAGE

The family is a cornerstone of society. The family gives the security and stability children need to develop holistically. For the year 2013, Chen Su Lan Methodist Children’s Home (CSLMCH) was home to some 107 children/youth whose families were not able to provide for their developmental needs. Base on strong Christian values, the programmes and services extended to the residents, ensures sound character development for our residents.

For the year 2013, emphasis was made on nurturing leadership. Imparting the basic principles of Restorative Practices to residents in September 2013 and equipping residents with the first level building blocks of character development through Programmes like Youth Works, LEAD, and Project Give, lay the foundation in developing leadership qualities. Coupled with the regular devotion time through Vespers the residents were enveloped with not just guiding principles, but support and encouragement in keeping abreast on the path of righteousness.

With the completion of the renovation of the Chapel in June 2013, the Home continued with the strong avocation on the spiritual development of the residents. We were honoured that Bishop Dr Wee Boon Hup, Bishop of the Methodist Church in Singapore, gave the blessings at the official opening of the Chapel. We are thankful for the support extended by the management of Nippon Paint Pte Ltd, who fund the cost of this renovation, which amounted to $111,030.00. 2013 also saw the completion of the cyclical maintenance of the Home. With funding from The Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF), the Home was required to pay only $56,118 out of the total cost of $420,576.35 The Ministry of Social and Family Development continued with the licencing checks. The Home did well on this front, securing a full score of 100%. Members from the Board of Visitors, MSF continued with the bi-monthly visits to the Home to check on the standards of care. Ms Low Yen

Ling, Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Social and Family Development graced our Annual Christmas Thanksgiving Concert, as Guest of Honour, on the 6th December 2013. She gave a heart-warming message to an encouraging turn-out of some 450 guests, donors, volunteers and family members who attended this event. We were also encouraged by our residents’ academic performance at the PSLE, as all 9 residents passed the examination.

With strong leadership from the Management Committee Chen Su Lan Methodist Children’s Home, the direction for the Home for the next 5 years was mapped out during the Strategic Planning Exercise held on 22nd November 2013.

While the journey ahead presents new challenges, we continue to put our trust in our Lord Jesus Christ to lead and show the way. I hope in reading the proud achievements of our residents in the pages that follow, glory would be given to God our Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. On this note I like to warmly thank our parents, volunteers, donors and friends from Wesley Methodist Church, Ministry of Social and Family Development and partners in the Social Service Sector for the support given to our residents. All glory to God.

First piloted in 2012, Restorative Practices (RP) continues to take root as part of effective child management. Since its launch all the staff underwent training by Lutheran Community Care Services (LCCS), the only local RP training agency that is affiliated with the International Institute for Restorative Practices, USA. By September 2013, all our residents were also trained in RP. Since then, our Home continues to provide a supportive environment to build the RP culture and cultivate a common language among staff and residents for the restoration, and affirmation of relationship and character formation.

With this goal in mind, the Restorative Committee was established to process all incident reports and facilitate the restitution work by way of the following process:• Conduct hearings of an incident • Guide and initiate responsible behaviour• Guide restitution work• Encourage reconciliation and restoration of

relationship• Inform respondents and complainants about

restitution work

The Restorative Committee adheres to the following objectives:

Professional SupportRESTORATIVE PRACTICES

• To provide a RP Framework for the Home.• To ensure an atmosphere of safety when

addressing incidents with complainant and perpetrator.

• To facilitate Child-Centric decisions.• To conduct Circle time which upholds the

principles of Engagement, Explanation, and Expectation Clarity.

• To focus on the behaviour, and not the person.• To work “With” the residents so that residents

feel supported.

In order to constantly keep staff up-to-date on RP, LCCS provided consultancy sessions for the staff throughout the year. During these consultancy sessions, the staff were refreshed on the fundamentals of RP. They also learned to brainstorm new creative ideas in using RP. The staff also affirmed one another in the practice of RP and celebrated their learning process at the last session. In total, 25 staff have actively participated in six consultancy sessions with LCCS in 2013.

Looking back in our restorative journey, we have accomplished many significant milestones. However, we still have much to learn and grow. We cannot guarantee that restorative practices

will result in a positive change now, but we firmly believe that it will have a positive change among our residents and staff in years to come. Now, one thing for sure is that our residents are now feeling more comfortable and willing to form circles and using restorative language to resolve conflict and build relationship with their peers and staff. Also, Staff are now more attuned to provide a fair process for our residents, and to do things “With” them instead of “For” or “To” them. Through restorative practices, we have broaden their perspective of looking at issues. We no longer just

focus on the problems but also on the strengths of each resident.

Moving forward, CSLMCH is committed to shape a restorative culture in the Home, where every child is guided with the tools to do the right thing even when there is no one watching.

With God’s blessings, we will continue to improve and sustain the restorative culture in the Home, and continue to influence and impact residents and staff.

The Professional Support Department continues to play the professional role in providing timely, intervention to support and help our residents to cope with the challenging problems in their lives. The Professional Support Department provided a total of 1,351 hours of counselling for our residents and, this is an increase from 1,217 counselling hours in 2012. This increase in counselling hours reflects the department’s objectives for increased contact time with our residents, so as to ensure that our residents have someone there for them both in times of challenges and to also share in their happy moments. During these counselling sessions, our social workers, counsellors, and youth workers have the opportunities and platforms to work with the residents on issues like:

• Anger Management• Identity and Self-esteem• Anxiety• Attachment-related Problems • Childhood Trauma• Grief and Loss

Our service delivery also ensures that our residents’ families are linked to relevant community agencies and government bodies, so as to support the reintegration plans of our residents.

In 2013, the Department strengthened the use of Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) assessment tool that was introduced by Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF). All our social workers, counsellors, and youth workers were trained to use this tool and incorporate it into our residents’ individualized care plan. As part of our ritual with the residents, bi-annually our case workers will sit down with their residents to discuss and formulate their individualized care plan. This helped the case workers to not only focus on the needs of our residents, but to also identify their strengths and discover their potential. With a more holistic overview of the child, the Professional Support Department is

CASE MANAGEMENT AND COUNSELLING

able to implement more timely and appropriate interventions.

To complement the case management and counselling services, the Professional Support Department works closely with the Therapy Team to help our residents cope with issues like emotional and physical abuse, rejection, abandonment and anger. The therapy team provided both play and art therapy to help our residents better comprehend their emotions and make sense of what they are going through. A total of 208 hours of therapy was provided for our residents in 2013.

Our case management and counselling services will continue to focus on the needs and issues of our residents, so that residents and their families are successfully integrated. Changes can be slow or insignificant at times, but like planting seeds of faith, the department aims to provide a safe and loving environment through quality case management and counselling. With the Grace of God, our residents will grow and display their beauty within, bringing joy and hope to not only to themselves but to the society at large as well.

DYNAMIC NEw PARENTS

Parents and children participating in activities during DNP

CSLMCH conducted its first Dynamic New Parents (DNP) workshop in Mandarin this year. A total of 7 participants attended the five sessions which were held over five consecutive weeks; from 4 October – 1 November 2013.

DNP is a psycho-educational group work which equips parents/caregivers with effective parenting techniques and increases awareness of their parenting styles. Topics explored during the sessions include:

a. Life Reviewb. Parenting Styles and its Trans-generational

effectc. Communication and Child’s Love Languagesd. Childhood Trauma

DNP also provides bonding opportunities between the parents/caregivers and children. As parents share their stories, a support network among the group members gradually develops.

The last session of the DNP programme ended with a role-reversal life-simulation game for parents and their children. After the activity, the children shared that they have gained a better understanding of the difficulties their parents faced. All the participants gave positive feedback on the programme and felt empowered to make the changes they need to make in their relationship with their children.

I Empowered is a collaborative effort between Chen Su Lan Methodist Children’s Home, Health Promotion Board and Coalition Against Bullying Singapore. With a psycho-educational orientation, the programme helps adolescents address issues concerning self-esteem, decision-making, building social skills and managing peer pressure. This programme helps the youth make a shift from external to internal locus of control.

The programme was conducted during the December school holidays, 17, 19 & 20th December 2013. At the end of the 3 days programme, all the 11 participants reported that they have gained emotional awareness and techniques to support the development of interpersonal skills.

Project Safe (R) was adapted from Project Safe, which was launched in 2011. This programme was conceptualized by CSLMCH in partnership with the Department of Social Work, Faculty of Health Sciences, Nanyang Polytechnic. The programme adopts a target-hardening approach that addresses safety issues of low-risk children aged 5 – 12 years in residential setting. The programme focuses on issues such as abuse, bullying behaviours, boundaries and good & bad touches.

Project Safe(R) is a revised version with new topics, such as cyber bullying and the bullying circle. It also provides practical skills to teach the children how to respond to at-risk bullying situations. Video clips, role plays and activities were used to stimulate the learning process.

The Zippy’s Friends programme is designed to promote the emotional wellbeing of children aged five to eight years of age by increasing their repertoire of coping skills. This programme is based on a set of six illustrated stories about a group of children, their families, friends and an imaginary stick insect called Zippy. Comprised of six modules, the programme addresses the following themes: feelings, effective communication, making and breaking relationships, conflict resolution, dealing with change and loss, and general coping skills. Structured into sessions, the programme is designed to actively engage the children in a range of child-centered activities.

The programme was conducted from 14 November to 19 December 2013. The 10 children who participated in the programme shared that the coping skills discussed were very useful and they had learnt to better cope with the various stressors face in life.

ZIPPY’S FRIENDS

Rainbow provided the children and adolescents an opportunity to receive support after a painful loss. The support groups provided these grieving residents a safe platform to share their feelings in an accepting environment, supported by trained, caring facilitators.

Through the 12 group sessions, participants were able to acquire the skills in problem solving and thus developed their own coping mechanisms to manage their daily adversities. This year, a total of 25 children participated in the programme. During the programme, participants were invited to make the decision to forgive the people who hurt them and begin the process of healing. Many of the participants shared that they were able to let go of the hurts at the ‘’Celebrate Me Day” organised on 12th December 2013.

The LEAD™ Programme facilitated by C.O.A.C.H Venture was conducted from 17-19 June for a total of 18 youth boys and girls. This programme imparted the youths with thinking, communication and social skills through leadership assessment tools and team-building activities.

Core Objectives of LEAD™ Programme:• to identify their personalities, character

strengths and values• to understand what they think about

themselves and others • to understand their behaviours better and

how to build positive relationships with one

another• to take personal responsibility and how they

accomplish their goals• to learn to be role models for their peers and

the younger children in the home• to create opportunities for them to equip with

practical life-skills and cultivate hope to build a better future

On the 3rd day, youths were put to the test to practise what they had learnt and apply their decision making skills, problem solving skills, communication skills, and leadership qualities to work as a team to overcome problems and obstacles.

Youths took tremendous pride in their achievement of discovering their potential and the team spirit and camaraderie built among themselves.

In 2013, many of our residents were given the opportunity to give back to the society. As much as these residents are beneficiaries, they also have the capacity to serve the community. Project Give provides such a platform. Residents are invited to present songs, dance, raise funds for other charitable organisations such as Assisi Hospice and Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped. Using their God-given talents and trained by volunteers, children and youths cheerfully gave themselves to serve others. Some older children and youths lent their hands to Willing Hearts, a charitable organisation that prepares and distributes food to the needy in

Singapore. In giving of themselves through such projects and events, many of our residents experience the truth of what Jesus said, “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.” (Luke 6:37-38)

In the Home, some youths were identified to assist in tutoring the younger children and to assist houseparents to conduct daily devotions or vespers. It is our hope that the youths would be good role models for the younger children, training them to assist staff to care for even the younger ones.

TESTIMONY bY A RESIDENT

My name is Dan. It took me quite a while to decide if I should be sharing this testimony. So here I am sharing about Project Give.

Project Give was introduced to us by the Home in March 2012. At the start, I was hesitant about joining this project as I felt that it was a waste of time. I have been living in the Home for 11 years had I have to say that this project did change me in several ways and I never regretted taking part in it.

It opened my eyes to see how lucky we were to be living in the Home. I remember there was once when the Home brought us to a charitable organisation called the ‘Willing Hearts’. There, we were asked to cook, cut vegetables and pack food for the needy families. When we distributed the food, I saw many families who were less fortunate and needed lots of love and care. From then on, I learned to serve and not be served. I also realised that there were many people out there who were less fortunate than I was and I felt really blessed and lucky to have a Home which provided me with the basic needs such as clothes, food and most importantly, education. I would like to end this testimony with a verse from 2 Corinthians 9:7

“Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”

Spiritual Development

With the support and recommendation from the Home’s Management Committee, the former communal hall was refurbished and transformed into the Chapel of Love. This was another milestone by the Home to raise the spiritual development of the residents and staff. After months of work, the Chapel of Love was officially opened on 6 July 2013 by the Bishop of the Methodist Church in Singapore, Rev Dr Wee Boon Hup who dedicated the Chapel of Love to the glory of God.

Volunteers from various Churches were invited. Both Wesley and Trinity Methodist Church sent their members to train our residents in the art of puppetry, singing and song leading respectively. While Sister Teresa from the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary helped with the intricate work of sewing the liturgical, altar cloths, it was even more heartening to see one of our ex-residents, sponsoring the pew, and providing the contractual work in transforming the Chapel. This project not only shows the mosaic work from different churches and people but more significantly, it exemplifies for us the spirit of the “one holy catholic and apostolic Church” as expressed in the Nicence Creed.

The Chapel of Love will be used by staff and residents for weekly prayer and devotion conducted by the Chaplain. Liturgical events like Advent, Maundy Thursday, Easter, etc. will also be celebrated to educate residents about the life and ministry of the Lord Jesus. The Chapel is also open daily for staff and residents wanting a sacred place for vespers.

Spiritual Programmes are held weekly with our residents in partnership with the following churches/ organisations. These programmes fed our residents with the Word of God.

PROGRAMMES

This yearly event was held on 1st June to celebrate the children’s talents with their families. In partnership with Trinity Methodist Church, our residents danced, sang, and put up their best performances, both to showcase to their families their God-given talents as well as be rewarded with shopping vouchers. Many parents commented that they have never seen such talents in their children and were very pleased with their performances.

The theme for this year’s concert, “to serve and not be served,” drew its inspiration from the words of The Lord Jesus to his disciples, correcting their myopic and self-serving attitude toward leadership.

The Rev Ivan Tan, our guest speaker from Wesley Methodist Church echoed and expounded on Christ’s servant leadership from the Gospel of Matthew 20:28. With 3 simple points, Rev Tan points the residents and audience to Jesus’ example: Jesus came, Jesus served and Jesus gave, exulting all in the concert to be like Jesus.

We were blessed to have as our Guest-of-Honor, Ms Low Yen Ling, Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Social and Family Development. Her down-to-earth speech and personal testimony made a connection with many of the audience. She congratulated residents who did well in their examinations and thanked volunteers and partners for their hardwork and support extended to the Home. About 450 well-wishers, parents, guests and former residents attended the Annual Christmas Thanksgiving Concert.

One of the highlights for this year’s concert came from the youth residents. They served

CHRISTMAS THANkSGIVING CONCERT - TO SERVE AND NOT bE SERVED

in both the foreground and background of this concert. Some as master-of-ceremony, others gave testimonies on how the Home has helped and changed them. Others worked behind the scenes assisting in manning the audio-visual, lighting and other technical systems. Yet, the most heartening highlight was the synergy and servanthood observed as older residents mentored and worked with the younger residents in this whole concert.

Every year during the concert, it never fails to enthuse our residents to give off their best in show casing their God-given talents in singing, dancing, playing a musical instruments and even public speaking. This year was no exception. They danced and sang to favourite Christmas carols and contemporary music, and gave words of

thanks to God for the Home, to the delight of their family members and audience. Many of those who came, including former residents, who would never fail to take

such an event as their annual gathering, commented that they were awed by the performances, and gave wonderful feedback.

The Artist-in-Us Programme, initiated in 2010, introduces art appreciation to the residents of Chen Su Lan Methodist Children’s Home. The primary objective of this Programme is to develop confidence and creativity in the participants. In addition, it facilitates teamwork and character building as participants learned to support and encourage one another as each waded through uncertain waters in producing their art objects, which symbolized their aspirations.

The theme for 2013 was “Me”. The children used ceramics as a medium to form symbolic 3D sculptures and vessels. The project invited 15 children to share their inspirations, dreams, hobbies and to journey the process of self-discovery.

ARTIST-IN-US

Two facilitators Ms Jenny Giam and Ms Ruby Zeng introduced the art of ceramic to 2 groups of children; the special needs and mainstream. The children learned how to manipulate clay using a combination of pinching, rolling and other hand movements. They also explored the use of their fingers and tools to create unique decorative details.

The children’s ceramic pieces were showcased during our Annual Christmas and Thanksgiving Concert and we had offers from well-wishers to purchase them.

We are deeply grateful and thankful to our main sponsor, Chen Su Lan Trust for their continued support and contribution.

TESTIMONIES bY RESIDENTS

Cherry & Celine’s Testimony Hi everyone, I am Cherry and my best friend is Celine. We are 12 years old and residents in Chen Su Lan Methodist Children’s Home. We come from different backgrounds and we are happy to be in the Home.

Our stay in the Home has been very interesting and memorable. The Home is a safe, fun and comfortable place to live in. We have caring, supportive and loving staff who guide and teach us on how to live with our peers. Do you know we have 10 -14 children in one dormitory? It is very fun and enjoyable to have friends around us. Of course we have our quarrels but we usually make up after that.

We are also blessed to receive donations from other people. We have volunteers who give us tuition and teach us art and craft. Sometimes we are treated to movies and outings to places that are interesting. Most of all, we are glad to be able to learn a musical instrument. I play the guitar and ukulele and Celine plays the same thing as me. All these are possible, all thanks to our volunteers and sponsors that gave us this opportunity. We are so thankful for their awesome kindness and generosity towards the children here.

God bless all our donors.

ThanksCherry & Celine

Testimony by Kal My name is Kal and I am 18 years old. I am the President of CSLMCH Taekwondo team.

Firstly, I would like to thank God for giving me this position. Taking up this position wasn’t easy but with the guidance of staff and coaches, the committee was able to cope with the challenges. I also learned that with God as your foundation, you will never collapse. Even though we might have stumbled along the way, God has always provided a way for us.

I took up this role because I was the eldest in the team and also I learned to understand the needs of the children and the youths. I wanted to make the difference. Therefore, I took up the role of the President. There were many children learning Taekwondo and they would always hear the coaches praising the youths for their active participation and their willingness to strive for Taekwondo. It also surfaced to my attention that we as youths have to put up a good front, in front of the children because the children would always imitate our action and the way we speak.

Ultimately, being in the National Team or representing my country or being the taekwondo president isn’t all about leadership. The measure of godly leadership is the ability to influence others and point them in the right direction. If you commit yourself to following God full time; people are going to notice and are going to join you even follow your example.

TESTIMONIES bY RESIDENTS

Testimony by Ray Hi everybody! I’m Ray and I’m 15 years old this year. I’ve been staying in this Home for about 10 years now. I would like to thank the Home for the continual support all these years especially the volunteers and tutors who kept pushing me to study hard. With that, I managed to achieve some targets I had set earlier this year. Hence, we should give our best and trust in God in everything we do so that God can be glorified. Through the Home, I also got to know YG (Youth Guidance) and Trinity Methodist Church, which have made a huge impact in my life. It is where I became a Christian. Next, you might be familiar with the movie, Kung Fu Panda 2. It does not just provide entertainment, but also offers a few lessons which are applicable in our lives. One of which, I would like to share with you today. I quote, “Your story may not have a happy beginning, but that does not make you who you are. It is the rest of your story, who you choose to be. So who are you?” This was what the soothsayer said to the Panda, Po. As I reflected upon the words, I realized that my story is quite similar to Po. Likewise, my story didn’t start off well. However, when I chose to believe in God, I began to see life from a different perspective. I just felt the peace and joy that set me free from my anxieties. Since then, I have never regretted the decision I made . All in all, I’m a child of God and that is what defines me. I hope that my testimony will encourage and inspire you. Thank you.

Your story may not have a happy beginning, but that does not make you who you are. It is the rest of your story, who you choose to be. So who are you ?

I derived my inspiration and passion from my CEO and fellow colleagues from Social Work Department to pursue my dream to become a Social Worker. Their noble gesture going beyond the call of duty, bestowing unconditional love, care and quality time in looking into the dire needs of clients mesmerized me to follow in their footsteps. I applied for the Diploma and Higher Diploma in Social Work at Social Service Institute, and graduated in 2011 and 2013 respectively. I have submitted my application to UNISIM to pursue my degree in Bachelor of Social Work.

My desire to pursue this course is to gain a better understanding and knowledge of the social service sector. I believe this programme will equip me with the skills, to engage children and their families and work towards the positive changes they want in their lives.

As a trained Social Work Associate I hope to help and empower individual and their families to

ASPIRATION bY SELVI

lead a better life by learning to deal with their problems and finding a solution to overcome their struggles. My profession, as a Social Work Associate, has pushed me to think creatively, to be more effective in problem solving and to relate empathetically to people.

Social work is a meaningful career, that comes with challenges, personal satisfaction and opportunities to care and uplift the lives of others. In the heart of every social worker it is a reward just to alleviate the pain, suffering and stress a client faces and to help them achieve their full potential.

I will continue in this to touch and make a difference in the lives of my clients.

STAFF DAY

The Staff Day was held on the 22nd June 2013 at Singapore Changi Airport. We thank God that we were able to organise our Staff Day under the hazy condition.

The theme for the Staff Day was “Knowing You and Giving Thanks”. Staff from ages 21 to 79 years old were divided into 5 groups, and Board Members, Mr Lee Ping Shih, Mr Clifton Tan and Mr Eddie Ong took time off to join us in this event.

The Amazing Race had each group racing to find the clues and to complete the puzzle at different locations in Terminals 1, 2 and 3, utilising the latest technology, WATAPPS in our mobiles to facilitate the games.

It was a competitive race as participants tried to reach the final destination where staff had to present their “Passport” and “Boarding Passes” before they were allowed to board the flight for their meals at Swensens Restaurant. Staff had a sumptuous lunch and rounded it off with the all-time favourite, Swensens ice cream.

During the “Get to know you” session, staff shared with us their childhood experiences, dreams and nostalgic memories. One of the staff had all of us in stitches when he showcased his special talent by mimicking the sound of fishes, “blop, blop, blop”.

This year we were blessed by 2 sponsors and an ex-resident who contributed part of the Lucky Draw prizes : Thank You Sponsors.

A Psalm for Giving ThanksPsalm 100

1 Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth. 2 Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. 3 Know that the LORD is God. It is He who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. 4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. 5 For the LORD is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.

LONG SERVICE AwARD

Madam Ng Ah PingDuring our Annual Christmas Thanksgiving Concert held on the 6th December 2013, Chen Su Lan Methodist Children’s Home acknowledged and awarded Madam Ng Ah Ping and Madam Aylandam for their 25 years of service to the Home. It was a proud moment for them to be on stage as they received the Award from Ms Low Yen Ling, Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Social and Family Development.

Madam Ng, fondly addressed by staff and residents as Aunty Cook had worked in Chen Su Lan Methodist Children’s Home since 1988. Back then, the Home accommodated only 25 children.Madam Ng cooked for the residents. She reminisced and chuckled at the nostalgic days when children would rush back from school to their favourite curry chicken, fried chicken wings and sweet desserts like tau suan, ang tau tng (red bean soup) and hang zi tng (sweet potato soup). Now, whenever ex-residents come for a visit, they would greet her: “Ah Ma, le hor bo?” (Grandma, how are you?) and she would tease them a little and remind them of their mischievous behaviour whilst living in the Home.

In the 25 years she had worked, she took only a few days of medical leave as her constant worry was to ensure the children had a good home cooked meal. “Children cannot go hungry, they need to grow tall and strong. Come eat, eat…” she would always say.

The turning point for Aunty Cook was when she accepted Jesus Christ our Lord as her Saviour in 1998. She is now attending Zion Full Gospel Church every Sunday (Hokkien Service).

Aunty Aylandam Aunty Aylandam was a stay-home mother prior to joining Chen Su Lan Methodist Children’s Home. In 1988 she joined the Home as a part time laundry staff. Aunty Aylandam’s strong sense of commitment was recognised by the Management of the Home and she was soon given added responsibilities. She was converted to full time staff, and her duties included cooking, purchasing of household items, overseeing the maintenance of the dormitories and kitchen, and ensuring that the general areas were clean.

Aunty Aylandam cuts a formidable figure, and she is well loved by the children for her kindness and sense of fairness. The children are well aware that though she may be a strict disciplinarian she has a kind heart, ready to meet the needs of the children.

The residents also loved the spicy noodles cooked by Aunty Aylandam. One child enthusiastically commented “This is my third round, so yummy ! Aunty, give me more noodles and more chilli please…”

“No child should be deprived of love and through our actions let us show them that we care, and love them.” as shared by Aunty Aylandam.

Now at 80 years old, she has decided to retire to help look after her grandchildren. She shared “All children are my children and I love them all”.

We at Chen Su Lan Methodist Children’s Home will certainly miss her bright smile and breezy “Good Morning” - a quiet woman who did her work diligently and showed her love in her cooking.

Mdm Ng Ah Ping, awarded the 25 years Long Service Award with Guest-of-Honor, Ms Low Yen Ling, Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Social and Family Development

SHARING bY STAFF

Sharing by Jayson,Houseparent for House of Mercy

I am Jayson, 26 years old, from Philippines. This is my first venture out of my country to work in Singapore as well as being a Houseparent in the Children’s Home.

I have been working in CSLMCH for 7 months and it is a learning journey for me. I learned a lot from my interactions with my colleagues and the children; to be understanding, patient, giving and showing love and concern for the children so that they can trust and share with me their happiness and hurts. I feel this is how to work with the children so that I can discharge my duties and responsibilities to them and the Home.

I have faith in God that I can manage and handle situations that may arise and I will do my duty to prepare and teach the children to be independent, happy and responsible members to their families and the community at large.

Sharing by Auntie Rita

“I want to extend my appreciation to the staff of CSLMCH for nominating me as the Best Support Staff for the 4th Quarter of 2013.

It has been a wonderful experience working with the kitchen staff, especially Aunty Aylandam, who has always supported me. The Houseparents are also very co-operative, and I enjoy cooking for the children in the Home. There have been ups & downs, challenges & obstacles but at the end of the day, I know that we are all doing this for the children.”

Sharing by Jessica, Houseparent for House of Joy

It’s been almost 2 years since I joined CSLMCH and I realised being a Houseparent can be considered more of a ‘Calling’ than an occupation. It is a 24 hours responsibility, just like being a parent to your own children. You don’t choose the children placed in your care, so a good understanding of cultural differences and their history and background are important.

You must have a strong sense of responsibility, leadership and organisational skills, ability to work in close proximity to others and be in good health physically.

I am 42 years old, single and without the experience in taking care of children. I asked myself, what type of relationship should I establish with these children ? What do they need from me ? And what can I possible give to them ?

Then I discover upon having contact with these boys that I need to provide them with a sense of security. I need to be the primary adult parent in their lives, a parent substitute – this aspect of my presence in their lives has or may find appropriate channels for their expressions.

I learned to listen and negotiate with them based on a set of basic rules which they must follow. Knowing the complexities and impulsiveness of this age, I must be prepared to continue to be the ‘’keeper of the order’’.

But just my presence as a Houseparent is not sufficient to sustain a lasting relationship with the children, I have to develop a deeper understanding of each child through daily communication and participation in their activities.

I can say that I am happy and fortunate to be given the privilege to be involved in the lives of the children, to understand them better and be there as their significant adult.

CSLMCH Study Grant is extended to residents past and present, who demonstrate a positive attitude towards helping themselves improve in their academic performance or in learning skills that would assist in gainful employment. The Grant encourages the residents to strive for higher academic performances, or pursue a profession that would bring forth benefits to themselves, their families and the community.

In 2013, two study grants were awarded. The first was to our former resident, Roger Koh who was a resident of CSLMCH for 13 years and was subsequently discharged in September 2013. He did well for his GCE O level and achieved L1R4 of 18 points. He is enrolled at Singapore Polytechnic and is pursuing a Diploma in Civil Engineering

with Business. With this study grant, he does not need to worry about his school fees and can focus on his studies.

The second former resident Ms Felicia Soh was a resident for 3 years and was discharged in 2002. She is working as an Accounts Executive and applied for the grant to pursue the Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Accountancy and Financial Management in the University of Portsmouth. Felicia will be taking this course on a part time basis while she continues to work on full time to support her family.

We wish Roger and Felicia all the best in their educational pursuit.

First of all, I am grateful to the Home for looking out for me and approving the Bursary. It has

been really helpful, with this bursary, I do not need to worry about how I will be able to pay my school fees, or worry about not having enough money for food or transportation. I am able to have regular meals each day and travel to school. With this, I can really concentrate on my studies and give my best in understanding the concepts taught.

Volunteer

Thirty-one volunteers attended the Volunteer Orientation held on 5th April 2013. Through this Orientation programme, Volunteers had a better understanding of the various services provided by the Home , the roles undertaken by staff and the various programmes or services open to them to engage their services.

The Volunteer Appreciation Nite, held on 12th July 2013, recognised the valuable contributions of the volunteers who engaged the children in tuition and Vesper programmes. Over the years, the residents themselves have taken a more active role in organizing the Appreciation Nite. This included manning the registration counter, decorating the venue and even taking the role of Master of Ceremony for the night.

It was a fun-filled night where the volunteers were thanked for their contributions and ended with a sumptuous dinner. They were also treated to a surprise performance put up by the youth boys and a testimony shared by one of the residents. The volunteers enjoyed themselves, and many indicated that they felt renewed and rewarded when engaging in such events.

Teaching Children not departing from the Right WayProverbs 22:6 states “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it”.

I began serving as a tutor about three years ago. The child whom I am coaching is now in Secondary Two. I have some knowledge on his strength and weakness. He is intelligent but has to be pushed in his studies.

I am now focusing in teaching him mathematics so as to provide him with a stronger foundation in mathematics. He could, however, ask me on other subjects, if he has problems.

Besides academic coaching, I also provide him with moral coaching. I have found out that he is a Christian and I therefore use Christianity teachings to guide him. I started this year’s coaching with a prayer with him, to pray that God grants him wisdom and gives him perseverance in pursuing his studies. I hope that with Christian teachings and the grace of God, he will achieve well in both his studies and in his life’s journey.

Teaching Children not departing from the Right Way‘’I started volunteering with Chen Su Lan Methodist Children’s Home in 2012. In the first four months of the year, I had the opportunity to organise and play weekly badminton games with the kids. I was initially apprehensive about it as I did not know how the children will respond to me as a newcomer. However, I was glad to see that they enjoyed the sport. This gave me several opportunities to inculcate some life skills and values through playing badminton. When my work schedule did not allow me to continue with the weekly badminton sessions, I started to give weekly night tuition to the children. I remember I was tasked to teach a P4 boy who often challenged his teachers. After a few lessons, I realized that he is an intelligent boy with much untapped potential. Hence to captivate his attention, I showed him relevant science video clips from Youtube. This made him interested in Science and he started to ask more questions pertaining to the subject.

Just two days ago, when I arrived to give tuitions, I found out my tuition boy was walking around the Home and did not want to start tuition. I went to search for him, together with another housemaster. We found him at the basketball court and it was there that I had a good chit-chat with him. He finally came to his senses and agreed to continue the tuition.

Every child needs to know that someone cares for him/her. They can do wonders when they know someone is there for them, as that is when they start to believe in themselves. As the saying goes, ‘Students do not care how much we know till we show them how much we care’. This is indeed very true and it has been my guiding principle both as a school teacher and as a volunteer. I am glad that I am given the opportunity to make a difference in the children’s life in CSL Home. ‘’

The Child Care Centre continued to enjoy full capacity in the Year 2013. The team of teachers and staff are united in one spirit and work steadfastly towards the vision, mission and philosophy of the Centre. This spirit of unity fosters warm, nurturing and intellectually engaging interactions among staff, children and parents.

The Centre has six qualified and well-trained teaching staff and one child care assistant to provide care and teaching to a cohort of 55 children (18 months to 6 years old). The Centre had a low staff turnover. In-house training sessions were conducted for teachers on the strategies for engaging children and identifying and managing challenging behaviours in children. The teachers also attended workshops organised by the Early Childhood Development Agency to better equip them with the nurturing skills needed and to keep abreast with information technology and curriculum development as prescribed by the Ministry of Education’s (MOE) Refreshed Kindergarten Framework for Preschools. Through this we hope to inspire the teachers to adopt good professional practices.

The Centre provided an array of programmes that catered to the developmental needs of the

Child Care Centre

children. Through an integrated and holistic curriculum, the children acquired the necessary knowledge and enhanced their skills in an environment that challenges further learning. The Centre celebrated local festivals such as Lunar New Year, Easter, Dumpling Festival, National Day, Mid-Autumn Festival and Christmas. Besides

these festivals, the Centre also recognised and celebrated the importance of Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Teachers’ Day, Children’s Day and the Annual Christmas Thanksgiving Day. Through stories, songs and dances, the children learned all these festivities with a distinct local flavour.

Besides classroom activities, fieldtrips were organised to increase the children’s understanding of their environment. They also attended arts performance such as Hello Paige Play at the Esplanade Theatre, ‘Live Play’ – Prince Bear & Pauper Bear at the Storybook Theatre and the Art of the Bricks Exhibition at the Art, Science Museum at Marina Bay Sands. Educational trips were also made to Health-zone, Fairprice Supermarket, Pizza Tour at Changi Airport and Cultural Tour to Malay Heritage, Little India and Chinatown. These trips also promoted an appreciation of the Singapore culture, respect for race and religion, and a sense of wonder for

the world around them. In addition, it provided opportunities for the children to interact, cooperate and communicate with one another.

The Centre collaborated with Tanglin Trust International School to experience play-dates in a different setting. Through such collaboration, these children learned beyond their own social context, putting into practice what they had learnt regarding respecting different cultures and at the same time honed their social skills. Children develop cognitively through such interactive play which gives them the freedom to explore, experiment and discover.

The children also played their part in contributing to the community. The Kindergarten 2s were involved in a mini June holiday project – Baking for Charity. Each child contributed an ingredient to bake cookies to raise fund for the Chen Su Lan Methodist Children’s Home (CSLMCH). The

children packed and sold their cookies to the staff and parents. A total of $200 was collected from the sale of cookies. The K2s went on an orientation tour of CSLMCH and learned empathy for disadvantaged children. As these ten children graduated from preschool into primary school, they would remember this learning journey of using their different talents for a good cause.

The Ministry of Social & Family Development (MSF) works in partnership with the community to create a pro-family environment by instilling positive values on family life, marriage and parenthood. To this end, the Centre organised family outings and parenting talks to support our stakeholders, the parents. Outings to the SEA Aquarium in Sentosa and the Flower Dome & Cloud Forest Conservatories at the Gardens by the Bay enabled both the children and their families to spend quality bonding time in the midst of Nature. Such outings help to strengthen not only

the children’s intellectual development but their social, literacy and numeracy skills as well.

Parenting talks were organised to help parents forge stronger bonds with their children and to empower them with better parenting skills and techniques to strengthen their relationships with their children. Parents who attended these workshops shared that they gained knowledge, acquired new perspectives towards their children’s behaviours and gained awareness about themselves as parents.

Moving forward, the Centre will continue to align its pedagogy with MOE; supporting learning through purposeful play, enhance self-confidence, and stimulate the learning of languages and

social-emotional skills. This framework helps to set the benchmark and teachers’ instructional methods can be tailored to the needs of each cohort. This new guideline will push for a common practice, and check ‘over-teaching’.

We believe that it takes a village to raise a child. No matter what our role, be it supervisor, parent, teacher or community partner, we share a common vision of a secure, confident and happy child with a love for life-long learning. We look forward to our teachers, parents and community partners working collaboratively for the holistic development of the children in our care.
