THE ElEPHanT In THE RooM

The Meiji period ran from 1868 to 1912 in Japan,

and was an influential time for the country,

affecting its social structure, politics, economy,

military, and foreign affairs. The craftsmen of the

time became renowned for good-quality bronze

work, casting everything from censers to highly

detailed figurines. This cast bronze elephant has

a warm patina, and a signature seal, and is depicted

striding forward at pace.

This art deco figure of a young girl playing with her dog comes from the northern

region of France near lille. art deco emerged from the interwar period when rapid

industrialisation was transforming culture. It influenced everything from visual arts

to design, and became synonymous with symmetry and lavish ornamentation. Deco

figures from this period often contain dogs within their design. Here, the two characters

sit atop a marble base, which is engraved by the original painter.

p GET THE HuMPThe Fat lady sings – or, in this case, plays a Chinese lute (pipa) – as she sits

nobly atop a silk Road walking camel, as portrayed in this rare-sized Bactrian

figure from the Tang Dynasty period. The figure reveals a glimpse of

history, in which camels would walk along the silk Road between China and

the Middle East – passing through Bactria – to transport people and goods

back and forth. The camel shown here appears to be craning his neck and

shrieking, not happy to be bearing the load of a larger-than-life woman.

Brooches have been around since

the Bronze age, first serving

a practical purpose holding

garments closed, then, as times

progressed, becoming a symbol of

status and class. nowadays they’re

used as decorative jewellery items

and encrusted in diamonds.

Gallery’s Choice

West Australian curators select their favourite works from top gallery exhibitions. COMPILED BY Lily Yeang and Christie Bosworth

1. CatherINe ChrIstIeHigh Tide | $11,500Artist | Catherine Christie has been producing large bespoke works for more than 20 years. She was nominated for the 2006 South African Woman of the Year in Culture and Arts for her wide range of talents in this arena, and for her charitable contributions. She has previously owned and curated six galleries during her painting career. Catherine says, “My works are emotive and speak largely to the soul or the universal heart and not the intellect. The aim of my work is to inspire and/or leave the observer with a feeling rather than a thought.” Artwork | “This is one of my best works and should ideally be appreciated in the flesh,” Catherine says. “If you close your eyes and touch the surface of the piece, you’ll feel how I’ve created a roughness not unlike the texture of shells. The visual image is of aqua blue seas at high tide. One clearly ‘feels’ the wild rush of water as it hits the rocks. High Tide is a very emotive and powerful work that commands instant attention and at the same time, your entire reflection. Perfect for those who are moved by the ocean in all its splendour.”details | Oil on canvas, 130x130cmHeaven and Earth, until January 15, Aube Nouvelle.

2. DaVID GILesThe space between love and happiness | $4500Artist | David Giles is a talented artist who has won more than 20 art awards in his career. David has been exhibiting for 20 years in numerous international shows and has more than 40 solo exhibitions to his name. The artist recently featured in an ABC documentary called How Art Changed My Life, which focused on his art career, and was also listed in the World Wide Art Book’s publication International Contemporary Masters in 2014. Artwork | Painted listening to Bollywood music,The space between love and happiness references the euphoria of falling in love and the risk love involves – the risk of falling down the rabbit hole, going too far over the rainbow, the risk that you may not get back in one piece. In this sense, the work seeks to create a tension between the beauty of love and the fear of the unknown that comes with the risks involved.details | Acrylic on canvas, 120x100cmSo It Came To This, ongoing, David Giles Art Gallery.

3. BarBara ChaPmaNLandscape, Freshwater Bay | POAArtist | From her first solo exhibition in 1994, and all that followed, Barbara Chapman has sought to convey what it feels like to breathe the air of the places she chooses to paint. This is often 1 3
