HUA HIN, THAILAND The whole of Thailand celebrates H. M The Queen’s birthday this week, which also doubles as Mother’s Day in Thailand, on Tuesday 12th August, and an added bonus for everyone is the long weekend that precedes it, with Monday (11th) and Tuesday (12th) both public holidays. Some schools have also been closed today (Friday 8th) and many people will take today as a holiday. The extra day’s holiday on Monday was approved by the National Council for Peace and Order early in July after being proposed by the Tourism and Sports Ministry, in an effort to boost domestic tourism, and hopes are high that Hua Hin and Cha Am will get a significant boost in tourism over the four day weekend. For those readers who have not been in the area during a public holiday before, be prepared for journeys to take longer, as the roads will be congested, and they could be worse this time as work is continuing to try and improve the main Phetkasem Road; it is common practice as well for right turns at major junctions and u-turn junctions to be blocked off by the police so some careful planning and extra time needs to be allowed, particulalry if venturing into the centre of Hua Hin. As part of the celebrations the 6th annual Queen’s Cup Toyota Hua Hin International Triathlon 2014 is taking place on Sunday 10th August at the Black Mountain Water Park. The triathlon will be the Olympic standard distance of 55.6km, consisting 1.6km swimming, 43km cycling and 11km running, beginning around 7am with an expected finish about 10.30am. Winners of the individual triathlon will receive a trophy from HM the Queen and a cash prize of 6,000 baht. Four runners up will also receive a trophy and prize money. GET RACING FROM ONLY 400 BAHT! This week it is..... Warts and allThe whole thing; not concealing the less attractive parts. This phrase is said to derive from Oliver Cromwell’s instructions to the painter Sir Peter Lely, when commissioning a portrait.at the time of the alleged instruction, Cromwell was Lord Protector of England. Lely had been portrait artist to Charles i and, following the restoration of the monarchy in 1660, he was appointed as Charles ii’s Principal Painter in Ordinary.Charles iiLely’s painting style was, as was usual at the time, intended to flatter the sitter. Royalty in particular expected portraits to show them in the best possible light, if not to be outright fanciful. Lely’s painting of Charles ii shows what was expected of a painting of a head of state in the 17th century. it emphasizes the shapely royal calves - a prized fashion feature at that time.Cromwell did have a preference for being portrayed as a gentleman of military bearing, but was well-known as being opposed to all forms of personal vanity. This ‘puritan Roundhead’ versus ‘dashing Cavalier’ shorthand is often used to denote the differences in style of the two opposing camps in the English Commonwealth and subsequent Restoration. it is entirely plausible that he would have issued a ‘warts and all’ instruction when being painted and it is unlikely that Lely would have modified his style and produced the ‘warts and all’ portrait of Cromwell unless someone told him to.We have Cromwell’s death mask as a reference. From that it is clear that Lely’s portrait is an accurate record of Cromwell’s actual appearance.Despite the plausibility of the account, there doesn’t appear to be any convincing evidence that Cromwell ever used the phrase ‘warts and all’. The first record of a version of that phrase being attributed to him comes from horace Walpole’s anecdotes of Painting

in England, with some account of the principal artists, 1764. Walpole’s authority for the attribution came from a reported conversation between John Sheffield, Duke of Buckingham, the first occupant of Buckingham house, now Buckingham Palace, and the house’s architect, Captain William Winde. Winde claimed that:Oliver certainly sat to him, and while sitting, said to him - “Mr Lely, I desire you would use all your skill to paint my picture truly like me, and not flatter me at all; but remark all these roughnesses, pimples, warts and everything as you see me, otherwise I will never pay a farthing for it.”That was published in 1764 - over a hundred years after Lely painted Cromwell. Walpole included no evidence to support the attribution, nor any explanation of why no one else had mentioned the phrase in the preceding hundred years - this despite Cromwell’s life being the subject of minutely detailed historical research and over 160 full-length biographies. We can only assume he was indulging in a piece of literary speculation rather than historical documentation. The first known citation in print of the actual phrase ‘warts and all’ is from a ‘Chinese whisper’ retelling of Walpole’s story - an address given by an alpheus Cary, in Massachusetts, in 1824:When Cromwell sat for his portrait he said, “Paint me as I am, warts and all!”it may well be the case that Oliver Cromwell preferred portraits of him to be accurate, but it is most unlikely that he ever uttered the words ‘warts and all’.

CAshING INthe financial benefits

of being an expat.

Every week in this article helen Couldrey, a financial consultant with the deVere Group, and also a qualified English lawyer, will give you tips and ideas of how to take advantage financially of being an expat. helen has clients in Bangkok, hua hin and Cha-am who she helps to maximise the financial benefits of living overseas.

TiME, nOT TiMinG

For anyone who works in investments, having to utter the words “your investments are down” could be perceived to be a particularly bad day. Similarly, they are the words that every investor does not want to hear. however, having funds that are down for a certain period of time can sometimes work to your advantage, giving you greater returns in the long run.

DOLLaR COST aVERaGinGin a nutshell, market downturns can be good buying opportunities. Downturns can be like going into the shops in the January Sales and buying those luxuries that you wanted, but at a discounted rate. in essence you get more investment units for your money which can work to your advantage over the long-term if those investments then rebound. This can be much more effective than just selling the investments when they are at their lowest. however, if those particular funds or shares are likely to remain down then obviously it’s not a good time to buy. Selling may also be the better option too.Warren Buffet, one of the savviest investors of this era made a lot of money during the credit crunch by benefiting from ‘discounted’ investments. he bought various investments during the decline and, when the markets started to rebound, made a lot of money. he persevered with the belief that, over the long-term, he would eventually see a return… and he was right.

hOLDinG OnSitting tight can often be the best way forward; it all depends on what the investments will do. There may be bull markets, when prices will rise or be expected to rise, followed by pessimistic bear markets, during which it may appear a better option to sell investments. nobody can predict what the future will hold but we take piece of mind in the fact that trends do show that keeping investments for a long period of time yields returns. if we look at trends over a 20 year period between 1992 and 2012, regardless of what type of investment is held, whether it be cash, property or equities, there is a steady increase in the overall holding over time. Generally speaking, equities outperform other investment types in the long-term and, if it’s a long-term strategy that you have in place it is worth keeping this in mind. after all, time, not timing is often the key to successful investing.

aRThRiTiSa man who smelled like a distillery flopped on a subway seat next to a priest. The man’s tie was stained, his face was plastered with red lipstick, and a half-empty bottle of gin was sticking out of his torn coat pocket. he opened his newspaper and began reading. after a few minutes the disheveled guy turned to the priest and asked, “Say, Father, what causes arthritis?”“My son, it’s caused by loose living, being with cheap, wicked women, too much alcohol, and a contempt for your fellow man.”“Well, i’ll be damned,” the drunk muttered, returning to his paper. The priest, thinking about what he had said, nudged the man and apologized. “i’m very sorry, i didn’t mean to come on so strong. how long have you had arthritis?”“i don’t have it, Father. i was just reading here that the Pope does.”

LuxuRy CaRa guy driving a yugo pulls up at a stoplight next to a Rolls-Royce. The driver of the yugo rolls down his window and shouts to the driver of the Rolls, “hey, buddy, that’s a nice car. you got a phone in your Rolls? i’ve got one in my yugo!”The driver of Rolls looks over and says simply, “yes i have a phone.” The driver of the yugo says, “Cool! hey, you got a fridge in there, too? i’ve got a fridge in the back seat of my yugo!” The driver of the Rolls, looking annoyed, says, “yes, i have a refrigerator.”The driver of the yugo says, “That’s great, man! hey, you got a TV in there, too? you know, i got a TV in the back seat of my yugo!” The driver of the Rolls, looking very annoyed by now, says, “Of course i have a television. a

Rolls-Royce is the finest luxury car in the world!”The driver of the yugo says, “Very cool car! hey, you got a bed in there too? i got a bed in the back of my yugo!” upset that he did not have a bed, the driver of the Rolls-Royce sped away, and went straight to the dealer, where he promptly ordered that a bed be installed in the back of the Rolls. The next morning, the driver of the Rolls picked up the car, and the bed looked superb, with satin sheets and brass trim. it was clearly a bed fit for a Rolls Royce. So the driver of the Rolls begins searching for the yugo, and he drove all day. Finally, late at night, he finds the yugo parked, with all the windows fogged up from the inside. The driver of the Rolls got out and knocked on the yugo. When there wasn’t any answer, he knocked and knocked, and eventually the owner stuck his head out, soaking wet. “i now have a bed in the back of my Rolls-Royce,” the driver of the Rolls stated arrogantly. The driver of the yugo looked at him and said, “you got me out of the shower to tell me ThaT?!?!”

CROSSWORDThe Pope was working on a crossword puzzle. he thought and thought about one clue, finally gave up and asked the Cardinal next to him, “What’s a four letter word, ending in u - n - T that ‘relates to a woman’?”The Cardinal was working on his own puzzle and didn’t even bother to look up. “*a*unt, your holiness.”The Pope didn’t speak for a second. “Oh.” he paused. “Do you have an eraser?”

ThE BaBy BuSinESSOK - hands up - i admit to being one of hundreds of thousands of the so called ‘Baby Boomers’ born during the aftermath of World War 2.it was clearly a productive but somewhat unsettled time. Men returning from the war often found that the hoped for return to a normal family life was not to be. Many relationships didn’t survive the prolonged absence of the person who was once seen as the head of the household. Women had become used to working and supporting themselves, and had gained a new sense of independence, which for some wives also involved moving on to pastures new.For the more fortunate couples one priority was to catch up on lost time, not to mention ticking biological clocks, and either start their families or add to them. For many others it was a case of starting over.Whatever the personal reasons one result, certainly in the uK and probably many other countries, was a huge rise in adoptions.in those days abortion was still totally illegal in Britain, and despite having more independence single mothers still found themselves stigmatised, even by the State. Those without the support of their families were hidden away in homes for single mothers until they gave birth, at which point their babies were quickly whisked away to join adoptive parents.unlike the stringent adoption processes and checks which take place now it was all pretty chaotic, and often family doctors would liaise with each other to match babies with new parents. Then of course came the now infamous shipping of orphans to new lives in australia by the childrens charity Doctor Barnardo’s.Fortunately times have changed. We have moved on, and single Mums are socially accepted if not even the norm. Which means that less babies are available for adoption by childless couples.no doubt you can see where this is all going.Quite apart from there being less adoptable babies, there have also been huge advances in the field of artificial insemination, which can give couples the

hope of having a child which is in every way biologically their own, even when it has been carried to term by a surrogate mother. Which, as we have seen very recently in the case of baby Gammy in Thailand, doesn’t always have a happy ending. For those who have somehow managed to miss the news, Gammy was left with his surrogate Thai mother because of his medical issues, while his healthy twin sister was taken home to australia by the biological parents.Whatever the truth behind a situation which led to a baby, clearly planned, being so cruelly separated from his biological family, the fact remains that Gammy and his sister were part of a business transaction. and that is what really concerns me about the whole issue of surrogacy, because normally when people pay for something they expect it to be right. But babies are not commodities and don’t come with a sale or return policy.

This weeks word is ‘adjure’. a peculiar little word rarely heard being bandied about in day to day bar room chat. it simply means to solemnly urge someone to do something. an example of its’ use could be something like ‘Thailand was adjured to place stricter controls on surrogacy.’
