    8. Precedent for this concept (thatthe repair and the [re]construction ofthe Temple began immediatelyfollowing its destruction, in virtue ofthe fact that the entire purpose of thedestruction was to repair the Temple)

    is found explicitly in the first exile[the Jewish people were subject to],the Egyptian Exile.

    Straight after the [prophecy ofthe] decree of exile [in Egypt] they

    will enslave them and oppressthem69 G-d told Avrohom thePatriarch, afterwards they will goforth with bountiful possessions.70

    The well known explanation71 forthis juxtaposition is that the entirepurpose of the Egyptian Exile is for

    the sake of the subsequent elevation(the bountiful possessions) theJewish people would experience, as

    well as the receiving of the Torah [onMount Sinai]. (However, the Jewishpeople, being in exile and subject tothe persecution of the Egyptians,

    were unaware of the resultant benefit,for which reason they wished to goout of exile at the earliest possibleopportunity, even if it meant forgoing

    the bountiful wealth they were to acquire.72)

    (We may assert that this is the inner meaning of thefact that the tribe of Levi were not subjugated [by theEgyptians], as follows. Since the tribe of Levi alwaysmaintained their Torah study and upheld the Mitzvos oftheir ancestors,73 even while they were in Egypt theyknew and were highly conscious of the fact that the exileand the persecution itself brings about the purificationand the elevation, the bountiful possessions. Ofconsequence then, they never perceived thesubjugation.)

    Likewise, since all the kingdoms ([i.e.,] the exiles[associated with them]) are referred to as Egypt,74 the

    latter point applies to all the exiles [the Jewish peoplesuffered], especially with regard to this final exile. Interms of what is overt and experienced consciously, theredemption begins only after a considerable durationfollowing the destruction of the Temple (the beginning ofthe exile). However, according to the inner reality, sincethe entire concept of exile is for the sake of the elevationof the redemption (the bountiful possessions extractedfrom exile), the very first moment following the momentof exile [i.e., when the Jewish people were cast into exile]is a moment of redemption, with no separation [i.e., no

    interrupting pause].75

    As discussed above, this [inherent link of redemptionwith exile] is not only the case with regard to the conceptof destruction and exile as it exists On High, from G-dsperspective; it is also true in the context of the Divineservice of the Jewish people, to the extent that his cow

    brayed, the effect is apparent even in an animal, here

    below.Moreover, in the words of the Alter Rebbe, This

    ultimate perfection of the Messianic Era and the Era ofthe Resurrection of the Dead, which is [expressed in] therevelation of the Infinite Light of G-d in this physical

    world, is dependent upon our deeds and our servicethroughout the entire time of the duration of the exile.76

    Since the revelations of the redemption and the conceptsrelating to redemption come about through our deeds

    and our service throughout the entire time of the durationof the exile, it is understood that the revelations and therelated concepts are prepared in advance i.e., they arepresent within our deeds and our service.77

    True, [for the most part] the human eye does notperceive this [i.e., the presence of redemption within

    exile]. However, righteous people and the holy leaders ofthe Jewish people (nsiei Yisroel), who have luminouseyes, see, in the exile itself (both with regard to thedescent and the darkness of the exile and with regard toour deeds and our service), the inherent reality ofredemption.

    9. In light of the above discussion we can resolve aquandary regarding the concept of predicting the end ofthe exile.

    The Gemara says, Let the bones of those who predictthe end of the exile decay (tipach atzman).78 The

    Rambam references this phrase at the end79 of hismagnum opus [ Mishneh Torah] (which is entirelycomprised of laws (halachos halachos)): So too, oneshould not attempt to predict the end date of the exile.The Sages said, Let the spirit of those who predict theend of the exile be struck with despair (tipach rucham).

    But in actual fact we find many such predictions. In

    addition to the Sages of the Gemara and preeminentscholars of the Jewish people who lived after the time ofthe Talmud, throughout all generations,80 the Rambamhimself records a prediction of the end of the exile in his

    bookIgeres Teiman,81 as well as in later works, and thereis a well know prediction of the Alter Rebbe mentioned inthe famous discourse,82 And the thousand and sevenhundred.83

    POWER TO BRING THE REDEMPTION

    A Jew can claim that since he isfinite and limited, restricted by thenatural limitations of the world, andhe spends an important part of theday (according to Torah) involved inoptional matters, eating, drinking,sleeping. This is particularly true, hereasons, during the time of exile,

    when there are numerourestrictions, limitations, andconcealments upon his ability to serveG-d in the fullest sense, etc. Andtherefore, it is not within his capacityto do even the most insignificantavoda. Surely he doesnt have thepower to bring about the True andComplete Redemption!

    We tell this person that thecoming of Moshiach dependsspecifically upon our actions andour avoda throughout the time ofthe exile, and since the Redemptionhas still not come, this is the veryproof that the matters depends uponour actions and our avoda in thisgeneration.

    THE TIME OF THE EXILE GROWS LONGER AND LONGER

    The time of the Heels of Moshiach continues to getlonger, the time of the exile grows longer, and the son ofDovid has still not come.

    This is what is said (Thillim 41:10), [he] has raisedhis heel over me.

    when the day of the histalkus and hilula comes eachyear, this is a befitting time to make good resolutions toincrease in all activities for the spreading of Yiddishkait,Torah, and mitzvos, as we learn from his activities and

    21 MENACHEM AV: TWO LEVELS IN THE G-DLY REVELATION

    OF THE FUTURE TO COME

    In the days of Moshiach, even the human body will be purified; the body will never again hide and concealG-dliness. In fact, the body itself will feel that it has beencreated in the image of G-d.

    With the Resurrection of the Dead, G-d Himself will be revealed in the world in all His glory the ultimaterevelation of G-dliness. Not only the enlivening G-dlypower or a transcendent G-dly power, but the veryessence of G-d will be revealed in our world. And everyperson, even while in a state of a soul within a body, willperceive G-d Himself in all His glory.

    22 MENACHEM AV: TZADDIKIM WILL SIT WITH THEIR

    CROWNS UPON THEIR HEADS IN THE FUTURE TO COME

    In the World to Come (The World of Resurrection),there will be no eating or drinking, no procreation or

    business dealings, no jealousy, no hatred, and nocompetition. Rather, tzaddikim will sit with their crownsupon their heads and derive pleasure from the DivinePresence. They shall not return to dust and they will existforever.

    23 MENACHEM AV: THE FUTURE TO COME THE REVELATION

    OF THE ESSENCE

    In this physical and material world, we cannot reachthe essence of the G-dly light, but we know and feel itsexistence through its manifestations.

    Greater than this is Gan Eden, where we attain theessence of the light that fills all worlds.

    Greater than this are the days of Moshiach, when

    physical matter will be purified, and the image of G-d willshine within man. And just as it was before the Sin and

    even higher than that, there will be revelations from thelight that transcends all worlds.

    Highest of all is after the dead will be restored to life,as then there will be the ultimate perfection of this world the revelation of the essence of the Holy One, BlessedBe He.

    24 MENACHEM AV: THE MANNA PRESERVED FOR THE

    FUTURE TO COME

    Mahn is the special food the Jewish People ate in thewilderness, the miraculous bread from Heaven. It is thefood that G-d had prepared from the Six Days ofCreation, and when the appointed time came, He broughtit down every day and provided the Jewish People withtheir needs.

    A jar ofmahnwas preserved by Moshe Rabbeinu as aremembrance for generations, and it was hidden together

    with the anointing oil until the time ofthe Redemption, when this jar will beamong the things revealed by EliyahuHaNavi.

    25 MENACHEM AV: IN THESE DAYS

    THE DAYS OF MOSHIACH WE CAN

    TOUCH THE TIME OF MOSHIACH

    These days in which we findourselves today are the days ofMoshiach, and we only have to open

    our eyes, and then we will see thatthe True and Complete Redemptionis already here.

    In addition and most importantly, all this is actuallymanifest down below in this physical world, so we cangive thanks and blessings for the birth and revelation ofMoshiach: Who granted us life, sustained us, andenabled us to reach (vhigianu) this time.

    Furthermore, we can also say (in relation tovhigianu) that it derives from the root ngia(touching), i.e., we can (not only see, but also) touch(ahnrirn).

    With the Resurrection of the Dead, G-dHimself will be revealed in the world inall His glory the ultimate revelation ofG-dliness. Not only the enlivening G-dly

    In his seifer Eved LAvdeiHashem, Rabbi Meir Mazuz,shlita, writes:

    Another matter that isappropriate to protest against isthe concept of mshichiut(Messianism). As is known, theRebbe in recent years spread andstrengthened the faith in theimminent arrival of Moshiach,and there was almost no sicha orfarbrengen that did not concludeon the subject of Moshiachscoming. (And so the ancientSages have written that thesparks of Redemption begin inthe year 5709, whichcorresponds to the fifth hour of

    the Sixth Day according to thecalculation that a day for G-d isone thousand years continuinguntil the year 5750, which isFriday afternoon.)

    Furthermore, there is noquestion that the Rebbe himselfpossessed a spark of Moshiach,similar to what has been writtenabout such world giants as the

    Ari, Rabbi Chaim Vital, ofblessed memory, the holy OhrHaChayim, and more. In later

    years, people would sing beforehim Yechi Adoneinu MoreinuVRabbeinu Melech

    HaMoshiach Lolam Vaed, andhe would encourage the singing

    with great strength and fortitude,as is known.

    However, due to our manytransgressions, neither we northe generation merited this,regarding which the Rambam

    writes (Hilchos Melachim 11:4,censored in many printings):But if he did not succeed to thisdegree (in building the BeisHaMikdash in its place andgathering in the exiles of Israel)or was killed, it is known that heis not [the Redeemer] promisedby the Torah.

    Adoneinu, etc., in theircommunal prayers, and writeShlita Has anyone heard thatpeople write Dovid HaMelechshlita, since they say, Dovid,King of Israel, lives andendures, during the prayer for

    the Sanctification of the Moon?What greater example can

    there be than the end of thegeneration of the wilderness,regarding which the Torah statesexplicitly: According to thenumber of days which you touredthe Land forty days, a day foreach year, you will bear youriniquities for forty years. Yet,Moshe Rabbeinu, of blessedmemory, stood in the fortieth

    year and said sharply to thechildren of Gad and the childrenof Reuven: If you turn awayfrom following Him, He willleave you in the desert again.

    This applies all the more so

    at the conclusion of the End ofDays, which is hidden andconcealed, as commanded byDaniel Ish Chamudos. Whatbusiness do we have with theconcealments of G-d to decide

    who Moshiach is?...

    Anyone who wants to useIgros Kodesh can do so, butwithout the expression YechiAdoneinu, the likes of whichhas never been heard before inIsrael regarding the Ari and theBaal Shem Tov, even though theyhoped during their lifetime thatthey would merit to bring theRedemption.

    1. THE SOURCE OF THE FAITH THAT

    THE REBBE SHLITA IS MELECH

    HAMOSHIACH IS IN THE WORDS OF

    THE REBBE HIMSELF

    Rabbi Mazuz shlita writes:Another matter that isappropriate to protest against is

    the concept of mshichiut.I thought in my innocence that

    in this orphaned generation, wheregentiles intermingle with theJewish People (and with thesituation in high schools anduniversities, etc., where Jews join

    with and marry complete gentilesrl), and when the lives of Jewsare abandoned (and no day passes

    without experiencing the oppositeof a blessing), andwhenobservant and chareidi Jews havebeen no less to blame for causingthis desolation, there are otherthings to protest against besidesmshichiut. For instance, callingfor those responsible for thesefailures to do tshuva, or at the

    very least, to try from now on tolisten to the instructions of theRebbe, Melech HaMoshiach, etc.

    To our great bewilderment andsurprise, what are peopleprotesting against that there

    are Jews who believe that theirrebbe is Melech HaMoshiach?Even if there would be, accordingto the protester, an apparent lackof faith, what business do wehave with the concealments of G-dto decide who Moshiach is? is

    this really the problem of ourgeneration? Is this the reason hehas to write in his preface to aseifer to arouse people torepentance?

    Getting to the heart of thematter, when people come toprotest against the mshichiut, itis impossible to ignore the factthat the faith of Lubavitcherchassidim that the Rebbe isMelech HaMoshiach is not some

    contrivance of the chassidim butthe clear words heard from theRebbe shlita on numerous

    occasions. The Rebbe explained atlength in Seifer HaSichos 5752,

    Vol. 2, from pg. 465 (in KuntresBeis Rabbeinu ShBBavel, basedon the Gemara Megilla 29a) thatthe leader of the generation whoteaches and spreads theteachings of Chabad chassidus isMelech HaMoshiach, and that thehome of the leader of thegeneration (which by Divine

    Providence has the number 770 the numerical value of BeisMoshiach) is where Moshiachand the holiness of the BeisHaMikdash will first be revealed,and they will go from there toEretz HaKodesh. The Rebbe hasalso emphasized many timesregarding Melech HaMoshiachthat his name is Menachem

    (and that there are threegenerations in the revelation ofMoshiach, as explained in theGemara (Sanhedrin 99a), andthey are alluded to in the languageof the Rambam (Hilchos Tshuva7:5): Torah has already promised

    that Israel will eventually dotshuva at the end of their exile,and they will be redeemedimmediately (miyad), andmiyad is an acronym forMoshiach his name isMenachem, preceded by Yosef

    Yitzchak the Rebbe Rayatz,nishmaso Eden, and Dovber the Rebbe Rashab, nishmaso Eden,

    before them). Furthermore, theRebbe stated explicitly in several

    sichos delivered in 5751 that hisproclamation regarding theimminent Redemption is an actual

    saying of our Sages, of blessedmemory, in Yalkut Shimoni, thatMoshiach announces to the JewishPeople, The time of yourRedemption has arrived.

    The seiferBesuras HaGeula,printed in 5753 by OtzarHaChassidim (the officialLubavitch publishing house) withthe approval of the Rebbe,Melech HaMoshiach shlita,

    brings in great detail all therelevant excerpts from these sichosand many more.

    In addition, the Rebbe himselfalso taught us that there isabsolutely no contradiction

    between Gimmel Tammuz and thefaith that the Rebbe is theMoshiach, as will be explainedfurther.

    Therefore, all claims againstthe Mshichistic faith ofLubavitcher chassidim are notagainst the chassidim but againstthe Rebbe himself and thedistinguished rabbi would beadvised to rely upon him. For just

    as everyone knew, and knows eventoday, to request his holy blessingfor health, sustenance, pride, andpleasure from children, andsalvation in whatever form, andeveryone saw and sees miracles insuch matters (and even theeminent Rabbi Mazuz shlitahimself spoke publicly of themiracles of the Rebbe hepersonally experienced), and justas when a person faced questions

    in matters of Torah, Jewishcustom, and faith, the Rebbes

    words were precise and exactaccording to all levels in the studyand comprehension of Torah, nomore, no less (as this seifer willprove), similarly we can rely uponhim on the subject of faith in thecoming of Moshiach, as everythinghe has said on the matter is trueand correct.

    Furthermore, I have already

    publicized elsewhere what thetzaddik from Yerushalayim, Rabbi

    Zondel Hager, of blessed memory,said when the Rebbe Rayatz cameout with his proclamation ofImmediately to Redemption, andthere were those who didntapprove. The holy RabbiSholomke of Zviel: The secret ofMoshiach has been given over tothe Lubavitchers, and it ispermissible for them to speak

    about it.Thus, with all due respect,

    anyone who wants to protestagainst mshichiut must knowthat his protest is against theRebbe MHM shlita himself, and

    who are we that you complainagainst us?

    We can rely upon the Rebbe on the subject of faith in the coming ofMoshiach, as everything he has said onthe matter is true and correct.

    authentic chinuch is one which achild accepts as a given, wherebythe child assumes no alternative.

    They once told of a 3-year-oldfrom Kfar Chabad who traveled

    with his father by bus to Tel Aviv.On the way, they passed a jail. The

    boy asked, Abba, what are thosebig walls for?

    The father answered, Thats ajail. It holds people who did badand dangerous things. They wereplaced behind walls so they wontdo more bad things.

    The child asked, Abba, why dothey need all those walls? Theyshould take away the negel vasserfrom near their beds and they

    wont be able to get up and run

    away!

    This dear child was taught thatyou cant get out of bed without

    washing your hands in themorning and he was sure the entire

    world knew this and practiced it,including those imprisoned in AbuKabir. So its a simple matter, justremove their negel vasser and they

    wont be able to get up! This is an

    example of a Chassidishe chinuch.

    HOW DO WE DO IT?

    The way to get children fromthe youngest ages to internalizeour uniqueness as shluchim orChassidim is to start from theyoungest ages!

    Most mothers know that itsvery important that children eat

    and drink properly, that they batheand are clean and neat. What dothey do to make this happen?Simple. From day one they feed,

    wash, and dress their children, asbest as they know how. Parentswill make sure to impart values

    such as proper and polite speech,cooperation and conscientiousness,etc. from the youngest age so thechild is habituated to it.

    At my home, for example, thechildren start to help clean up

    when they are one year old. Youmay ask, what can a one-year-olddo to help clean up? The answeris, he can put a diaper in thegarbage, he can pick up toys, etc.

    To tell you the truth, its easier

    for me to take the diaper to the

    garbage myself. Nevertheless, Iprefer to ask my child to pick it upand then hold his hand as we walktogether to the garbage, where Ishow him how to dispose of it.Then I tell him, Great, Yossi putthe diaper in the garbage!

    After four or five times, it goesmore quickly and most

    importantly, the child learns howto help and he will continue tolearn how to help and clean up.

    The same goes for shlichus orChassidishe chinuch. Shluchimeducate their children to be a partof the shlichus from a young age.

    There are shluchim whosethree-year-old gives out books ofThillim after the davening in the

    Chabad house, whose daughtergives out candles to neighbors orfood packages to the needy, etc.

    Ive heard of an 11-12 year-oldwho serves as the gabbai at theChabad house, helping outalongside his father and sometimes

    on his own. He arranges the aliyosto the Torah, organizesfarbrengens, and also sees to it, inhis sensitive way, that theatmosphere in the Chabad house isas it should be. Children of thisage also go on Mivtza Tfillin.

    An 8-year-old girl takes the 3-6year-olds outside during thedavening and says the 12 Psukim

    with them and gives out treats. A13-year-old organizes a summer

    camp during bein hazmanim fordozens of boys in his place ofshlichus.

    Of course, these activities haveto be accompanied withexplanations, stories, and primarily

    by personal example,demonstrating shlichus as a toppriority and the greatest privilegein the world, to be the Rebbesshliach, a mans emissary is likehimself.

    Shlichus becomes secondnature to children with this kind ofchinuch. One can hope (and pray)that they will continue ascounselors in camps, organizers,coordinators in yeshiva, etc., inaddition to learning diligently, andthat afterwards they will becomesuccessful shluchim.

    The same applies toChassidishe behavior. Chassidisheparents will put their children to

    sleep with a Chassidishe niggun, aChassidishe story. They will carrytheir child around the houseamong the Chassidishe picturesand say, Heres the Rebbe.Here the Rebbe is giving tzdaka.Come, lets give tzdaka. Heresa Chassid davening. Heres aChassid saying lchaim. You caneven do this with a baby.

    To tell you the truth, its easier for me totake the diaper to the garbage myself.

    Nevertheless, I prefer to ask my child topick it up and then hold his hand as we walk together to the garbage, where I

    show him how to dispose of it.

    You can take very youngchildren to farbrengensoccasionally. You can take themalong on mivtzaim. When you hosta farbrengen or shiur, you canexplain to your children whatsgoing on. You can take yourchildren to 770 or at least tell

    them and show them pictures ofBeis Moshiach and tell them thatsoon, G-d willing, he/she will alsogo to 770, which will soon be

    joined to the Beis HaMikdash.Theres a custom in my

    extended family from ourgrandfather, R Avrohom Lisson

    (which apparently started with hisfather ah, R Shmuel Tzvi Lisson,

    who was a shliach of the RebbeRashab in Ponovezh) that at theShabbos meal you pause in theeating and talking and give outTanyas. Then you read the daily

    portion together.A big deal is made of this.

    Before beginning, one or two ofthe little children (who dont read)are appointed to bring the sfarim,and they are called, RoshKvutza (thats the custom andtheres no changing it). Then wesing Yehi ratzon that we merit tolearn Tanya, (to the tune ofVaYivchar bDovid Avdo) andthen everybody reads a portion.

    The Tanya is explainedaccording to the level of theparticipants and it is customary,after learning, to sing, BaruchHashem that we merited to learnTanya.

    When we sow and water theseeds, Hashem will bless us and we

    will see the good fruits of ourlabor, and the Rebbe, when he isrevealed, will point and say, Theyare my children!

    After the death of Stalin, thegovernment began releasing somepolitical prisoners, among themRabbi Yaakov Notiks motherMiriam and his sister Sarah. Theymoved to Moscow and he joinedthem there. Rabbi Aharon Chazangot a job for them in the weavingfactory where he worked.

    R Notik continued in hisChassidic ways even at work, untilone day the manager, a nonreligiousJew, called him over. He asked himabout R Notiks behavior, whichstood out amongst the non-Jews,like eating while wearing two headcoverings.

    When R Chazan tried to avoid

    explaining it, the manager admittedthat he himself had been a Tamim inTomchei Tmimim and due to theturmoil of the times, he was in thestate he was in.

    The manager was later fired andanother Jew replaced him. This newmanager suggested to R Chazanthat he make a shidduch between RNotik with a religious girl who

    worked in the factory. The girl hehad in mind was actually Yaakovssister Sarah, who was using aforged identity. They did not tellanyone that they were related.

    R Chazan rejected the idea butthe manager insisted and explainedthat he felt he had to do somethingfor the good of the Jewish peopleand he thought this was a wonderfulmatch. He was ready to give theyoung couple a few thousand rublesin order to help them start out.

    R Chazan told R Notik that itwas advisable that he seek anotherplace of employment lest his realidentity be revealed.

    The Machnovka Rebbe was theone who made R Notiks shidduch

    with his wife Chana. Before thewedding, his mother warned methat he was liable to be arrested anyminute, she related, but the kalladid not heed the warning. She knewshe was marrying an outstanding

    Rabbi Yaakov Notik ah passed away on Rosh Chodesh Sivan. He was an activist who did not fear the communists, he contended with the government prosecutor of Samarkand, escaped by the skin of his teeth andused a bogus identity for ten years, yet

    he did not stop teaching Torah to theTmimim. Later, in Eretz Yisroel he didthe Rebbes mivtzaim devotedly and

    persistently, despite his advanced age.He was a tremendous Torah scholar, an Ish Halacha, permeated with classicJewish-Chassidic strength. * Part 2

    The wedding took place in Sivan1954 in the home of R Chazan inKliazma. After the wedding, RNotik said to R Chazans mother-in-law that if he would be in R

    Chazans place, he would notendanger himself to host a wedding

    for someone in his situation.After the birth of their firstborn

    Shmuel (today a shliach inChicago), R Notik and his familymoved to Georgia, where theysettled in the village Choroli. TheJewish community was tiny and its

    spiritual state wasnt too good.Upon his arrival there, he was

    appointed the chazan and shochet,he gave shiurim and was asked allhalachic questions.

    He was like the MosheRabbeinu of the community, saidone of the members of thecommunity.

    After ten years of using aborrowed identity, R Notik wasslandered to the local police. He

    was arrested when he was out of hishouse. When his wife heard the sadnews, she rushed to the policestation with her baby. She was inthe final months of her secondpregnancy.

    Mrs. Notik began screaming, Ihave a baby and soon will haveanother one. If you take my

    husband, kill me! Give me a gunand I will kill myself. I have no wayof living without him. Release himor kill me!

    In the meantime, she saw herhusband in the distance and he

    wisely motioned to her that therewas nothing to hide, for the policeknew he had been using a forgedidentity.

    Mrs. Notik didnt give up andthe commander of the police station

    was called down. He told her towait patiently in the courtyard. Hehad pity on her and after half anhour R Notik was released. It was amiracle!

    The Notik children grew andcame of age for chinuch. In Georgiathey could not receive a Chassidiceducation and so R Notik decidedto leave the relatively easierconditions in Georgia, for he had ahouse, a livelihood from ritual

    slaughtering, and led a community.In 5724/1964, the family moved toSamarkand in Uzbekistan, wherethere was a solid Lubavitchcommunity. There he hoped to findsuitable chinuch for his children.

    R Yosef Ladaiov, of theorganization CHAMA back in thedays in Samarkand, related:

    I would bring Bukharin boyshome in order to teach them Torah,as well as to attend Chassidishefarbrengens. R Notik and R

    Zaltzman farbrenged with them andstrengthened their spirit. There areno words to describe R Notiksmesirus nefesh. If the KGB hadcaught one boy who came to learnTorah or to farbreng in our house,R Notik could have been sent toSiberia for many years, but he wasfearless.

    In R Notiks yard, there weretwo small shacks. One year, a groupof Chabad boys moved into the

    shack in order to learn, and thatshow a yeshiva came to be in theyard of the Notiks of Samarkand.The young Tmimim learned ontheir own and when R Notikreturned in the afternoon, from thefactory where he worked, he sat

    with them and taught them Gemaraand Chassidus, explaining the partsthey had trouble understanding ontheir own.

    Aside from this, some Tmimim

    studied shchita with him and heestablished a new generation ofshochtim.

    While R Notik took care of theTmimims spiritual lives, his wifeChana took care of them by cookingfor them every day so they couldlearn comfortably.

    After the passing of Rav EliyahuParitsher (Levin), the rav of the

    Lubavitch community inSamarkand, Rav Notik became theunofficial rabbi of the community.

    All halachic questions were referredto the Torah scholar who wasexperienced in practical halacha.

    IN ERETZ YISROEL

    After years of suffering in theSoviet Union, R Notik finallyreceived permission to leave. At the

    beginning of Sivan 5731 he and hisfamily arrived in Moscow fromwhere they were to fly to Vienna ontheir way to Eretz Yisroel.

    R Lipa Klein and his familywent with him. R Lipa remembersR Notiks sigh of relief when theyfinished with customs and theexamination of the luggage, andthey went up to the departurelounge before boarding the plane:

    To our amazement, we saw a

    Georgian Jew wrapped in tallis andtfillin, immersed in his davening. RNotik sighed in relief and said, If

    he can put on tfillin openly, we canbreathe easily.

    Upon arriving in Eretz Yisroel,R Notik went to his sister, Mrs.Slavin in Tel Aviv, and a few dayslater he moved to his home inNachalat Har Chabad. Even before

    arranging a permanent dwelling, heregistered his children in yeshiva.He went to Lud with his four oldestsons, Shmuel, Avrohom Zorach,

    Aharon Dovid, and Yosef Yitzchok.The hanhala accepted them, thoughnot before testing them in Gemara,a test they did quite well on.

    A few months later, R Notikwent to New York for Tishrei5732/1971, in order to finally fulfillhis wish to see the Rebbe. R Lipa

    Klein relates:One morning I heard that R

    Chadakov was looking for thosefrom the group of immigrants whoknew how to learn. Among those

    who were called were R Notik andmyself. With no prior preparations

    we were told to enter the Rebbesroom.

    In those days, the war to amendthe Law of Return was raging. TheRebbe asked that we go to the office

    of Agudas HaRabbanim in theUnited States, which was led by the

    venerable sage, Rabbi MosheFeinstein zl, and to tell him and theother rabbis that we had just arrivedfrom the Soviet Union. We were todescribe the terrible assimilationthere.

    Then, said the Rebbe, we wereto tell them that therefore werequested that the AgudasHaRabbanim work diligently to

    amend the law so that in Israel theywould know that Jews in Americawant its immediate amendment.

    R Notik dared to ask the Rebbewhether to say this in the Rebbesname. The Rebbe said he couldspeak in his own name; the pointhere was to speak on our own

    behalf, as a group of ChabadChassidim who had come from the

    Soviet Union and were concernedabout what was going on.

    We carried out the Rebbeswishes that same day. We went tothe office of Agudas HaRabbanim inManhattan and spoke with RabbiFeinstein and other rabbanim about

    the importance of amending thelaw. Rabbi Feinstein promised to do

    what he could to have the lawamended.

    LOYAL SOLDIER

    At the beginning of 5732, theRebbe said a Tomchei Tmimimyeshiva should open in NachalatHar Chabad for immigrants fromthe Soviet Union. The yeshiva was

    founded and run for many years byRabbi Mordechai Kozliner. R Notikwas also one of the founders of theyeshiva and a member of its hanhalafrom the day it was founded untilhis final day.

    The yeshiva took in immigrantboys from poor homes. R Notikwas devoted to his talmidim andworked on their behalf in manyroles: as treasurer, maggid shiur,and mashpia.

    At first, R Notik traveled thecountry in order to bring immigrantstudents to the yeshiva. Using theRussian and Georgian languages, hesucceeded in bringing manytalmidim to the yeshiva whilesimultaneously fundraising.

    Much nachas was had fromthese talmidim with some of themholding positions in Torahinstitutions around the country. Ifnot for the yeshiva, they would have

    been spiritually lost.* * *

    R Notiks devotion to theRebbes campaigns was unusual.

    With every new mivtza, he was thefirst to run to the Chabad house to

    volunteer. Rav Notik excelled inbittul, said R Lipa Kurtzweil,menahel of the Chabad house. Hegot involved with every new mivtzaand pushed me to do as much as

    possible.Despite his age, he was always

    first in demonstrations and protestsregarding Who Is a Jew andshleimus haAretz. I remember thatat the demonstrations for shleimushaAretz at the Kastina junction, helay there on the highway in order toprotest the shocking peaceagreements.

    When it was about MihuYehudi, he joined demonstrationsand protests and was part ofdelegations that met withdistinguished rabbanim in Eretz

    Yisroel in order to get the lawamended.

    He felt like the Rebbes child.Whatever the Rebbe said, he didimmediately, without thinking itover first. He got fully involved,despite his age and his white beard.

    In Adar 5740, the newspapersreported his stubbornness instanding and demonstrating nearthe home of Knesset memberLorincz:

    At the vigil near Knessetmember Lorinczs house, stood anold Chassid, Rabbi Yaakov Notik.

    When some hotheaded bachurimtried to chase him away bythreatening him, he remainedunfazed Even when they came

    with a so-called psak of a rav,which said he had to leave, he asked as it says in Shulchan Aruch Yoreh

    Deia for the rav to show himthe source for his surprising psak.Naturally, they had to back off.

    R Notik was very involved in

    Mivtza Tfillin. For many years hedid this on Fridays, traveling withsome other Chassidim from Nachalato Ashkelon, where they were busyfrom one in the afternoon untilclose to Shabbos. In later years, he

    went to stores in Kiryat Malachi onFridays, where he put tfillin on withstore owners and customers.

    In his later years, when he wasweak and could not go out onmivtzaim, he would encourage us togo, said his son Zalman. Heespecially encouraged me in the

    battle for shleimus haAretz.Whenever he heard that there hadbeen any deterioration in oursecurity, he called me anddemanded that I do something atyishuvim in the territories.

    After the great wave ofimmigration in 1990 and on, RNotik made a minyan for newimmigrants, as R Sholom BerGarelik, one of the directors ofCHAMA relates:

    Before Chanuka 5751, R Notikasked me to start a minyan forimmigrants. He said that theimmigrants come to shul but dontget involved since they have nodirection and no siddurim inRussian. I liked the idea and thefollowing Shabbos we put together aminyan of immigrants.

    Since then, for 16 years, wehave special tfillos for newimmigrants. We received a specialletter and a dollar from the Rebbe

    when we started this minyan.R Notik did not just initiate the

    R Notik was a modest Chassid whowas completely uninvolved in materialthings. We never heard him say lashon

    hara or rechilus. He had a heart of gold. He was a great scholar with aterrific memory.

    idea but also gave a shiur inChassidus to the new immigrantsevery Shabbos, before Shacharis.

    RISING AT MIDNIGHTTO LEARN

    R Michoel Mishulovin, mashpiain Nachala who knew R Notik fornearly sixty years, relates:

    R Notik was a modest Chassidwho was completely uninvolved inmaterial things. We never heard him

    say lashon hara or rechilus. He hada heart of gold. He was a greatscholar with a terrific memory.

    His studying with his father, RShmuel Notik, along with hisdiligence and his intelligence, turnedR Yaakov Notik into a great Torah

    scholar, but because of his humility,his great knowledge was not readilyapparent.

    His family relates that when hiseyesight dimmed, people read tohim his daily shiurim. When they

    began to read the dailyHaYom Yom,he finished reciting it. When they

    began reading the Tanya, hecontinued reciting that too, and didthe same for Thillim and Chumashand Rashi.

    He was a tremendous masmid.

    The residents of Nachala rememberhim in a side room of the shul,immersed in his Gemara orLikkuteiTorah. Those who knew him wellsaid that he devoted many nights tolearning.

    When I would visit him in lateryears, said his son Aharon, Inoticed how he learned at night.

    After returning from Maariv, eatingsupper, he learned a little bit untilhe fell asleep with his clothes on.

    Around midnight he would get upand continue learning.

    He usually learned Gemara andHalacha, but in later years hedevoted most of his time to learninghemshechim in Chassidus. He didso after consulting with his mashpia,Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok Gansburg.

    R Notik was very particular inhis halacha observance and hemaintained many stringencies. Hisson Zalman and his daughter Bas-

    Sheva said his washing his handsfor a meal took half an hour. He

    was recently a guest at hisdaughters house and the group ofTmimim who stood in line to wash

    watched how he washed his hands,was not satisfied with the washing,dried his hands, washed a handagain, dried it, tried again, until he

    was certain that he had washed hishands according to all details ofhalacha and custom.

    * * *Rabbi Yaakov Notik passed away

    at the age of 86. He is survived byhis wife Chana and his children:

    Avrohom Zorach Petach Tikva;Shmuel Chicago; Dovid Aharon Tzfas; Yosef Yitzchok NachalatHar Chabad; Zalman

    Yerushalayim; Bas-ShevaSchneersohn Nachala.

    As we come from the days ofchurban that happened because of

    baseless hatred, we need to keepworking on the tikkun throughgratuitous love. As the Rebbe saidnumerous times in sichos, it isproper to always seek the good ineverything, in order to increase

    Ahavas Yisroel in a way ofgratuitous love.

    These days marks two yearssince the expulsion of the Jews ofGush Katif by their fellow Jews.

    Rabbi Sholom Dovber Wolpopublished The Black Book, a

    preview of a book he would like topublish, in which he seeks toidentify those who perpetrated theexpulsion and destruction offlourishing Jewish communities.

    After the booklet waspublicized, it aroused a storm ofcontroversy and sharpcondemnation, from within ourown ranks as well. Theappropriateness of the idea was

    It is two years now since Jews expelled

    Jews from Gush Katif and destroyedtheir homes, yeshivos, shuls, andlivelihoods. Since that time, various

    actions have been taken to condemnthose who did the expelling, both thosein senior positions and those in the

    lower ranks. Some people have expressed criticism regarding themanner of censure. * The following is a

    clarification of the topic of censure,based on the Rebbes view.

    questioned. Would it result in atikkun of the expulsion or make achillul Hashem?

    The Rebbe often said that it isthe unity among Chassidim that

    will lead us towards Moshiach.Therefore, these days, when weneed a tikkun in a way ofgratuitous love, we can certainlydebate the issue, but with anunderstanding of the othersapproach. When a discussion anddebate takes place with mutualrespect, there is a good chancethat we can arrive at an agreementand a meeting of the minds.

    * * *

    In my article in issue 602 (p.29) entitled, Our Rebbeim on

    Zionism and the Medina, it saidthat although the Rebbes approachis to be gracious to one and all and

    to be mekarev everyone to Torahand mitzvos with love andaffection, at the same time we needto remember a basic principle.Namely, that our graciousness maynot be at the expense of thosesacred principles for which theRebbe fought for years.

    It was explained in that articleand proven with several quotesfrom the Rebbe that the attitude ofthe Chabad Rebbeim and what

    pertains to us in particular, theRebbes attitude towardsZionism and the State wasunequivocally anduncompromisingly negative.Therefore, even though this doesnot mean that in every encounter

    with a Zionistic religious Jew orsomeone who is not religious do

    we need to tell them what we thinkabout Zionism! However, when we

    get into a situation where the topicarises, and all the more so whenquoting the Rebbes view on thematter, we must explain and clarifythe Rebbes position withoutequivocation.

    We need to do so even ifaskanim of other groups,including some askanei Chabad,maintained (in the past, asexplained in that article, and evennow) that these things are bettersaid privately. Publicizing it canonly harm Chabads image andperhaps also the amount of moneyit gets from the government, theysay.

    PUBLICIZING THEREBBES POSITION ON

    PERTINENT QUESTIONS

    In the aforementioned article,the topic was the Rebbes attitudetowards the State, negating thenotion that the advent of the State

    was the ischalta dGeula.However, the truth is that thisprinciple is correct and applies, ofcourse, to the Rebbes view onother issues which he fought forpassionately and which affectedhim deeply like the issues ofshleimus haAretz, Mihu Yehudi,and certainly the topic of theimminent Geula that these topicsmust be spoken about publicly, atevery possible opportunity, withoutcompromising and withoutsoftening the message. The Rebbeheld that we ought to publicize his

    views on these subjects, in everypossible, respectable way, without

    worrying about whether it willadversely affect Chabads image

    and interests.As additional proof, I quoted

    some typical excerpts from theRebbes sichos illustrating that

    when it comes to principles, wemust publicize the Rebbes view

    without apprehension about

    Chabads material or even spiritualinterests.

    In other words, we should notbe nervous about the governmentstrying to slash the budgets for ourinstitutions, and we dont evenneed to be worried about itdetracting from the spreading ofthe wellsprings and the mivtzaim(even though this is our primarygoal and the souls of ourgeneration came down for this very

    reason).Take shleimus haAretz, for

    example. The Rebbe spoke foryears in great pain and protestagainst the governments plans ongiving away parts of Eretz Yisroelto gentiles. This is what the Rebbesaid on one occasion (sichaMotzaei Shabbos BaMidbar 5739):

    Although my protest regardingshleimus haAretz is the protestof one person, since it is done in

    the presence of other Jews, it willcertainly be heard via telephonein other places. And since peoplehear it, therefore, the first thingthey do to me is, as follows.Since there are teachers [inChabad schools] who need toreceive a salary, and they needaid and support of various kinds[from government offices, theytherefore cheat them and] makethe teachers get their salaries

    with much hardship or theyreceive only a portion of theirsalaries. [This punishment is] onaccount of me protesting.

    This is in the category ofyoreid lchayav (undermininghis livelihood), which is one ofthe most serious things inShulchan Aruch. And they arenot embarrassed to do so!

    Rabbi Wolpo thought it would be aterrible thing if we didnt take

    advantage of the situation to open theireyes and to explain the Rebbes view.

    (The Rebbe explained how ithappens:)

    The first [clerk] takes andskims as much money as possiblefrom the teachers, since they[Chabad schools] are connectedto him [the Rebbe], who

    maintains and screams that weneed to act in a way of I willlead you upright (BChukosai26:13) and not to open Eretz

    Yisroel before our enemies, G-dforbid. Afterwards, comes asecond [clerk], who takes offeven more, since they did nottake off enough beforehand. Eventhough he knows it affects the[life of the] teacher and the rosh

    yeshiva or female teacher, who

    teach children things from TorasHashem, [like] love for Hashem,fear of Hashem, and Ahavas

    Yisroel, along with all the thingsthat our holy Torah teaches us.

    Furthermore, the goal of theseclerks is seemingly to get me tostop talking as I do, yet they aredoing this despite their knowing

    the truth ahead of time that itwont affect me at all, andtherefore, they wont gain a thingby withholding money. How dothey know that I do not payattention to this and I am notafraid of this? Since this is not

    the first time this has happened!Along these lines we find that

    the Rebbe did not take spreadingthe wellsprings and mivtzaim intoaccount in his protests, and he didnot worry lest his repeated protests

    would adversely affect hismivtzaim. We see this explicitly inthe sicha of VaYakhel-Pkudei5740:

    The problem with giving awayland [and the protest that ought

    to be made over it] is notconditional on anything else not on receiving money for

    yeshivos, receiving honor, orwhether it will adversely affectthe spreading of the wellsprings

    and mivtzaim the only relevantquestion is: will the land be easyfor them to conquer.

    We also find that the Rebbespoke, over the course of manyyears, sharply and with greatheartache, regarding the terribledecree of Mihu Yehudi, without

    being fazed by threats that moneywould be withheld. He stated

    publicly in the sharpest terms, andthis received broad coverage evenin the general press of that time,that no pressure would move himto stop or to soften or temper hisdemands and his fight for this (seepicture).

    From all the above, we clearlysee that the Rebbes position isthat on essential issues, mattersthat are central to Judaism, onemust proclaim the word of

    Hashem. Even if it is not palatableto the public, the journalists, thepoliticians, and those in thegovernment; even if as a result ofthis, Chabad and the Rebbesimage wont be as attractive, and

    budgets, spreading the wellsprings,and mivtzaim could possibly beharmed.

    Similarly, it is clear thatregarding the attitude towards

    Zionism and the State, especially

    questions regarding whether it isor is not ischalta dGeula, beingthat these are very basic to ourJewish weltanschauung and that ofthe world of Chabad in ourgeneration, obviously we need toutilize every suitable opportunity toexplain the Rebbes position.

    BETWEEN LIGHTAND DARKNESS

    This is what Rabbi Wolpo didafter the Disengagement, when hesaw (and I give him credit for

    being the first to see) that therewas a crisis within the national-religious sector regarding their

    view of the State.Think about it: Jews who were

    raised all their life to see the Stateas the ischalta dGeula, withrabbis who repeatedly told them

    that the State is the foundation ofG-ds throne, and suddenly, theState slapped them in the face. It

    wasnt just any slap either but asevere and extremely painful one.

    And the same state destroyed, in acruel and brutal fashion,

    settlements that were their prideand joy, and handed it all as a giftto terrorists and those whomurdered our children, andnothing was given in exchange. Onthe contrary, this move endangeredmillions of Jews and opened theland to our enemies. It is utterlyshocking!

    (This shock is primarily apsychological and emotional one,

    but as with everything that affects

    the psyche, it is expressed andmanifested in various concrete

    ways. For instance, many people inthe national-religious sectorstopped saying, mi shBeirach forthe State, and those who still say itstopped treating it with the samereverence (they stopped standingfor it, and some even talk whiletheyre reciting it), while othersmade compromises like sayingHallel without a bracha on

    Independence Day, or they onlysay Hallel at night and not by day.)

    Rabbi Wolpo thought it wouldbe a terrible thing if we didnt takeadvantage of the situation to opentheir eyes and to explain theRebbes view, so he wrote the book

    Between Light and Darkness [whichappeared as a serialized translationinBeis Moshiach], explaining atlength the Rebbes view of theState. The book also provides

    answers to questions which areposed by learned people within thenational-religious sector.

    BRINGING THE BOOKTO YESHIVA HIGH

    SCHOOLS

    A certain Chabad publicationasked why the book should be

    promoted among the national-religious yeshiva high schools andhesder yeshivos when this couldinterfere with spreading the

    wellsprings and Tanya classes.Some answers:First, weve already seen in the

    excerpts from the sichos quotedabove that it is permissible andeven necessary to publicize theRebbes views and positions onessential topicswithout worrying

    whether it will adversely affectspreading the wellsprings.Especially, when this is done in anorderly and engaging manner, inthe format of a respectable bookthat targets learned people andthinking people, which responds to

    questions thatwere asked by thevery people the book was intendedfor, with referenced answers.Certainly this is a good thing andis consistent with the Rebbes willon these matters.

    Second, what the complainersdont know, but I do, is that Rabbi

    Wolpo did not send his book toany of these yeshivos. Whathappened was, a group of askanim

    bought the sfarim from him and

    sent them to some of theseyeshivos.

    Why was the book sent to onlysome of the yeshivos and not to allof them? From my research Idiscovered that these askanim arefamiliar with what is going on inthe national-religious camp (sincethat is where they come from) andthey sent the book only to thoseyeshivos where they knew there

    was a good chance that the roshei

    yeshiva would look positively at thebook and would agree to allow itin their yeshivos.

    (Indeed, in nearly all thoseyeshivos the book was very wellreceived and was read by manytalmidim who were influenced bythe book (as the many letters theysent testify). Only one yeshiva

    wrote that their rosh yeshiva was

    not interested in the book and theydid not want the book to bemistreated and therefore they werereturning it.)

    Third, as for the claim that theRebbes message interfered withspreading the wellsprings and

    Tanya shiurim in these yeshivos,my research with those out thereand those responsible for theTanya shiurim shows that in thepast year and a half, since theDisengagement and the publishingof Rabbi Wolpos book, not onlyhas the number of shiurim andnumber of participants notdiminished, but they grew fargreater than they were before!

    Most importantly, consider

    this: Among which people doesthe Rebbe want us to publicize his

    view negating the State asischalta dGeula? Among theNiturei Karta? Among theresidents of Meia Sharim andBattei Ungarin?

    Obviously, the Rebbe wants hisposition publicized among those

    who need to hear it: the national-religious sector. This is precisely

    what Rabbi Wolpo set out to do in

    writing his book and what theaskanim did in disseminating it.They wanted the national-religious public to rethink theirposition when the Disengagementshocked them to the core of their

    beings.And we need to know that the

    disaster engendered by theDisengagement among thenational-religious is enormousand two years later is still a

    disaster! Many expellees have stillnot found work (some havent

    worked a single day since then),families have broken up and manyyoung people have thrown theirkippot away, rl. Those involvedin chinuch say that the childrensmotivation to learn hasplummeted and they are handlingcomplicated emotional and social

    problems.The real reason for all this is

    not only because they werephysically thrown out of theirhomes, but because their faith inthe State crumbled. That is whynow is the time to address these

    issues. This topic whether ornot the advent of the State marksthe ischalta dGeula comes up

    with the men and bachurim whogive Tanya classes. People areasking questions and want toknow the Rebbes position.

    THE BLACK BOOK

    As for the warning pamphletwhich was a pre-release to the asyet to be published Black Book andthe ensuing media uproar, I alsothink a mistake was made. Thefirst mistake was in using theRebbes picture in it.

    Second, the booklet makes aheartfelt request to soldiers andpolicemen who took an active partin the cruel expulsion anddestruction to sign a form whichasks forgiveness from the familiesthey hurt. The form also says theypromise never to do such animmoral, criminal thing again.

    The booklet guarantees thatwhoever signs will be forgiven and

    his name will not be mentionedamong the perpetrators of thecrime. However, says the booklet,

    whoever is unwilling to sign, willhave his name remembered ininfamy in the memorial to GushKatif which will be built in

    Yerushalayim (or in a book thatwill be published). It will say so-and-so took part in destroyingGush Katif.

    It is worthwhile to emphasizethe positive aspect of the form,

    which is that all those whoparticipated need to know that this

    isnt about persecuting anyone. Itis only a means to inspire in themthe psychological and emotionaldetermination and fortituderequired to resist being pressuredonce again to take part in expellingJews. (And this idea is notunrealistic, for the plan to expelmore Jews has already been

    promoted by Olmert and hisfriends in the coalition andopposition.)

    This is perhaps one way to helpthem muster the necessarystrength to deal with the pressureexerted on them. In other words,the fact that this soldier orpoliceman asked forgiveness andsigned that he would never do

    such a thing again can help himwhen pushed to the test, when theemotional pressure exerted on him

    by his superiors will face offagainst his promise not to expelany more Jews.

    The other side of the coin

    though is that those who areunwilling to sign will beremembered in infamy forever. Thepoint here is not to censure them

    but only to make it difficult torepeat similar crimes in the future.Therefore it should have focusedmore on the positive.

    However, despite thesecriticisms, the idea in general is agood one and should be handledproperly in order to prevent future

    such calamities.In summary, the uproar and

    media attack regarding the bookletwas exaggerated, for the ideabehind the booklet (or book, if it isprinted) is positive and its goal isto make it difficult for somethinglike the Disengagement to happenagain. The way in which it ispresented to the public though, hasto be more sensitive so it will bemore readily accepted.

    smile, pulled out a recent issue of the New York Times, and showed me apicture taken by a gentile photographer of the Rebbes farbrengen on SimchasTorah. I looked at the picture for a

    while, and I showed him where I was inthe picture. * That was the wholetreatment!

    I became the administrator of theChabad school in Kfar Saba. Theearly years were a delight and ourlives were filled with happiness andfortune.

    However, the wall of optimismand excitement that we felt began

    to crack as the months and yearswent by without having children.When a few years passed withoutany news we realized there was aproblem and we underwent around of tests by well knownexperts in the field.

    Looking back, I can testify thatwith the amount of money that we

    spent on doctor visits we couldhave bought a respectableapartment. Each such visit heldgreat optimism and hope, butultimately brought usdisappointment filled with anguishand pain. When one doctor

    suggested a certain treatment andwe didnt see any results, wewould move on to the next. Wedidnt give up hope easily, butnone of the treatments brought ussalvation.

    After a number of years, at theend of our visit with one of the topdoctors in the field, we were called

    to his office and he told uscandidly, The way it looks is thatyou simply cannot have children.The administration of the healthcare plan that we belonged to ruledin the wake of this doctorsdiagnosis that there was no hope

    and they would no longer pay fortreatments.

    The doctors words were sharpand clear, and they pierced ourhearts like steel nails. The mostdifficult situation that a person canface is when there is no light at theend of tunnel and you know thatthe frustration will go on for many

    more years, and perhaps evenforever. Its with this feeling that

    we left his office, distressed and inpain, and worst of al l, not knowing

    what to do next.Meanwhile, the Six Day War

    broke out, and as an infantryman,

    I was mobilized and sent with myfellow soldiers to a platoon facingthe Shchem area. During the war,

    we saw great miracles and weactually did hardly any fighting,since our tanks that led the waystruck terror into the hearts of theenemy and vanquished them withalmost no actual battle. The warmanaged to divert my attentionfrom my personal suffering for a

    brief time.

    At the conclusion of the war,when all my friends werecelebrating and going to the OldCity and the Kosel to rejoice, Ithought of those friends that hadfallen. I thought to myself that theyat least left children behind who

    would continue to bear their nameand carry on the chain of life,

    whereas if something hadhappened to me

    At this point, I decided that the

    time had come to visit the Rebbein 770, for the first time in my life,and to ask for his blessing. Inthose days, it was necessary torequest permission from the Rebbefor such a visit, and we did indeedreceive permission. The logisticalpreparations for the trip were notlike nowadays. Even my wifesfamily raised an eyebrow at theseeming daring involved in such adifficult undertaking.

    However, we desperatelywanted to come to the Rebbe, andby 6 Tishrei 5728/1967, wecompleted all the preparations.

    Armed with all of our medicalrecords, we boarded the flight toNew York.

    Since that flight I have flownmany times, but that flight wasparticularly difficult and

    exhausting. The weatherconditions were poor and we spentnearly an entire day on the plane.The plane shook from side to sideand there was real concern about

    being able to continue. Originally,the pilot tried to land in London,

    but due to poor visibility, wasforced to continue to Paris for atemporary landing.

    After the fog cleared inLondon, we proceeded to landthere to unload those passengers

    whose destination it was. When wearrived in New York, there was aterrible storm and we were forcedto circle over Canada until we wereliterally down to the last drops offuel.

    The entire time, aside from thefear we experienced throughoutsuch a difficult flight, we werepained by the fact that it appeared

    we would miss the farbrengen heldby the Rebbe on 6 Tishrei in honorof his mothers yahrtzait.

    We arrived at the end of thefarbrengen, and we were told thatthe Rebbe had inquired during thefarbrengen if the guests from theHoly Land had arrived. As soon as

    we heard about the Rebbesinquiry, we understood that withthis the Rebbe had removed thedanger that threatened usthroughout the flight.

    After a few days, my wife and Imerited a private yechidus with theRebbe. The excitement andemotion was beyond description.Me and the king alone just usand the Rebbe.

    We handed the twenty page file

    that we had brought from EretzYisroel to the Rebbe. The filedetailed every treatment we hadundergone. The Rebbe took thepages and scanned them from

    beginning to end at tremendousspeed. Throughout the yechidus,

    we could see how the Rebbe hadabsorbed all the details as if he

    were one of the doctors.

    Interestingly, even some of thegreat expert doctors would notalways remember every detail bythe time they reached page 20, and

    we would have to sometimes pointout to them what was written onan earlier page. The Rebbe recalled

    everything, and to our surpriserejected all the findings and saidthat the conclusion of the doctorthat we would never have children

    was incorrect.There is no need for miracles,

    you will have sons and daughtersthrough natural means, the Rebbeannounced suddenly, and heinstructed us to approach Dr.Seligson. He will tell you whatyou need to do.

    The Rebbe transformed ourhopelessness to hope and ourpessimism to optimism. Thedespondency which that doctorhad succeeded in infusing us with,disappeared as if it were neverthere.

    Since our yechidus took placeat night, we waited impatiently forday to come so that we couldconsult Dr. Seligson, as per theinstructions of the Rebbe. I knew

    the bracha was already in placeand now we just had to proceedalong the natural channels.

    I had never heard of Dr.Seligson. I assumed that he was a

    big expert that I would have tovisit at some clinic. It surprised mewhen I was directed to a ChassidicJew in tallis and tfillin, engaged inavodas hatfilla in a corner of 770.

    I later found out that he had infact been a practicing physician for

    many years. However, the Rebbewould send him people whoneeded a miraculous cure and theRebbe would provide him withhealing tools in the form of winefrom Kos shel Bracha andMatzos from the Rebbes seider. Iapproached him, and before Ifinished introducing myself, hepulled out a piece of paper with

    the name and address of a fertilitydoctor in Manhattan.

    After I left him, I sent in a noteto the Rebbe, asking if we shouldtake along a translator, since wedid not speak or understandEnglish, and certainly not medical

    jargon. A few hours later, we gotan answer that only my wife and Ishould go. I thought to myself thatthis is a real Baal Shemskemiracle, because there was no

    way that with my few words ofEnglish I would be able to have adialogue with the doctor.

    What happened was that it tookus a few hours to get to his office.This was our first visit in the US,

    without any knowledge of the

    language and without anyone tohelp us, which set the stage for ourcircling endlessly and gettinghopelessly lost. Only after a fewhours of this did we reach thedoctors office. The only thing weknew to tell him was that we weresent by the Lubavitcher Rebbe.

    He responded with a big smileand took out aNew York Timesand showed me a picture taken bynon-Jewish photographer of the

    Rebbes Simchas Torah farbrengen.I looked at the picture for a while,and I showed him where I was inthe picture

    Actually, that was the end ofthe treatment! We didntunderstand him and he certainlycould not understand us, so after afew minutes we said our goodbyesand set off. I have no idea whatthe Rebbe accomplished with thefact that we had to visit that

    doctor, because to human eyesthere was no practical result.However, we understood that this

    was part of some higher event thatthe Rebbe was orchestrating andhe chose us to be his emissaries.

    When we returned to 770, wewrote a letter to the Rebbe sayingthat we had visited that doctor andasking what to do further. A few

    hours later, we got a response thatwhen we return to Eretz Yisroel,we should visit a certain professorin Tel Aviv and say that the Rebbesent us to him.

    As soon as we arrived in EretzYisroel, we rushed to visit that

    professor, taking all of our medicalrecords with us. Of course, we toldhim that we were sent to him bythe Rebbe. He went through the

    whole file, carried out a long seriesof tests, and then suggested acertain treatment.

    Before beginning the treatment,we wrote to the Rebbe and theanswer was unambiguous that thistreatment was unnecessary! Weconveyed the Rebbes answer to

    the doctor, who got upset with us,You come to consult with me andin practice you listen to theRebbe? He remained adamantand we wrote the Rebbe again.This time, the answer was toapproach a different doctor.

    Without delay, we sought outanother expert, a top doctor in thefield based in Asaf HaRofehHospital. After an extensivecheckup, he suggested a

    pharmaceutical treatment. Onceagain, we wrote to the Rebbeasking if we should follow hisrecommendation. A few days later,

    we got the answer to check withyet another doctor. At that point,it seemed to us that there were noother doctors in the field in Israelthat we had not yet visited. Aftersome feverish searching, we foundourselves at Professor Polishok ofHadassah Ein Kerem, who ruled

    that the only possible solution wasan operation.

    Again, we wrote to the Rebbe,pointing out that the doctor beforehad suggested a non-surgicaltreatment, but the answer thatcame a few days later was cut anddried and three words long, Heed[the advice of] ProfessorPolishok. This clearly meant to

    undergo the operation.When my wifes family heard all

    the details, they were shocked.You have a doctor that says that amedical treatment will work, so

    why are you rushing to undergo asurgical procedure? Justifiably,

    they argued, If the medicationdoesnt help, then you canconsider surgery? However, ourposition was that this was not openfor discussion. The Rebbe said

    what to do and this was what wemust do.

    We set up an appointment datefor the surgery. The night before,

    we came to the hospital to preparefor the hospital stay. That night,the surgeon approached us and

    said he would like to do some labtests. After some time, he came toour room beaming. At first, we hadno idea what was the meaning ofthis sudden happiness, and heseemed in no rush to explain.

    Elaborating slowly, he explainedto us, I usually do not do lab tests

    before surgery. This is the firsttime ever that I decided, withoutany conscious reason, to conductsuch tests. I am happy to inform

    you that you are discharged,because there is no need for anoperation. You have good news

    For a few long moments, westood in shocked silence, confusedand amazed. We pinched ourselvesto make sure we werent dreaming.

    Ten years had passed since we gotmarried, and now the doctor wasinforming us that my wife wasexpecting, naturally, without anyform of treatment. The Rebbes

    blessing that there was no need formiracles and that my wife wouldgive birth naturally was now beingfulfilled in its entirety. We wereoverwhelmed and flooded with

    happiness, as we cried tears of joy.We returned to our home inBnei Brak giddy and rejoicing,and lo and behold, to our greatsurprise, we found a letter fromthe secretariat of the Rebbe in themailbox. When I opened the letter,I was even more stunned. Theletter contained a response to aquestion that I had asked on anunrelated topic a long time before,to which I had not yet received an

    answer.After answering the question,

    the Rebbe added in his ownhandwriting at the bottom of thenote, with blessing for goodnews. The astonishment we feltonly got stronger, together with

    the flame of hiskashrus and lovefor the Rebbe. The Rebbe haddelayed the answer so that it wouldarrive at exactly the right time.

    Nine months later, the bris milafor our son took place. Over theyears, despite the former medicalimpossibility, we had sons anddaughters exactly as the Rebbesaid, in a completely natural

    fashion without any outsideintervention.We have merited that our five

    children and fourteengrandchildren are all children ofthe Rebbe and involved in theshlichus of the Rebbe. My oldest,Menachem Mendel, named afterthe Rebbe with his permission, isan educator and outreach workerin Ramat Gan. Aryeh works for theshliach in Beit Dagan, and Moshe

    is a shliach in Odessa. Mydaughter, Menucha and herhusband Yehoshua Raskin are onshlichus in Chmelnietzki in theUkraine, and Shevi Goldberg is onshlichus with her husband in New

    York. Fortunate are we.

    As soon as we heard about the Rebbesinquiry, we understood that with thisthe Rebbe had removed the danger thatthreatened us throughout the flight.

    THE REBBESPERSONAL CHOICE

    Rabbi Shloma Majeski: It wasa Thursday night, 7 Adar I 1967.

    We were sitting and learningChassidus in the small zal of 770,

    where the talmidim of the Central

    Yeshiva Tomchei Tmimim learn.Suddenly, in walked Rabbi

    Binyamin Klein, one of the Rebbessecretaries. At first he did notarouse undo attention, but after heapproached several bachurimincluding myself, and told us to goto Rabbi Chadakovs officefollowing our learning, at 9:30, werealized something serious wasafoot.

    Rabbi Yosef Minkowitz:When

    I heard from Rabbi Klein that I hadto go to Rabbi Chadakovs office, I

    was a little nervous. I thoughtperhaps my attendance hadnt beengood or I had done something

    wrong and was in trouble. I askedRabbi Klein whether other

    bachurim had been given the sameinstructions, or just myself. Whenhe said there were other bachurim,

    Forty years after they had the privilege of being personally selected by the Rebbe and sent as talmidim-shluchimto strengthen the yeshiva in Australia,

    three members of the group reminisced about their shlichus with BeisMoshiach. * They describe the momentthey found out they had been chosen,the special yechiduyos with the Rebbe,the trip to distant Australia and their

    activities in the yeshiva, as well as the days following their shlichus, thespecial kiruvim, including being able to sit at the Rebbes table Pesach night and receive a piece of the Rebbes afikoman as members of hishousehold.

    I relaxed somewhat, even though hedidnt tell me their names, gratefulthat it wasnt just me.

    R Majeski: In the meantime,rumors flew around the zal.Nobody had any idea what this wasabout but as bachurim are want todo, we came up with possibilities.One bachur remembered that a fewmonths earlier, Rabbi ShneurChaim Gutnick had visited 770 and

    looked for bachurim who wouldagree to travel on shlichus to theyeshiva in Australia.

    The bachurim had refused toleave the Chassidic warmth of BeisChayeinu, and supposedly, theRebbe told him that the bachurimin Crown Heights could not live

    without (the Rebbes) farbrengensin 770. Therefore, he should look

    in other yeshivos like in Montreal,for example.

    Based on this fact, somebachurim speculated that perhapsthe Rebbe had decided to send

    bachurim from 770 now, and someof them even began singing, Ki

    bsimcha seitzeiun.Rabbi Hirshel Morosov:After

    we finished learning, when I arrivedat R Chadakovs office, I saw that

    we were eight bachurim. Weentered the office and R Chadakovgot right to the point. He said thata few months earlier a yeshiva hadopened in Melbourne, and they

    He explained in brief the role ofthe talmidim-shluchim, andconcluded that the trip was

    conditional on three points: 1) theagreement of the bachurim, to gohappily, 2) the agreement of theirparents, 3) approval from a doctorthat they could travel.

    One of us, I think it was RabbiAryeh Leib Kaplan ah, askedwhether this was an instructionfrom the Rebbe. R Chadakov didnot answer directly but only said: Isaid it has to be done joyfully and if

    We agreed to keep this a secretamongst ourselves so that if in theend one of us did not go, it wouldnot be uncomfortable for him. Yetsomehow, word got out and a

    when the Rebbe sends, you shouldbe happy and give a positive answeras soon as possible.

    R Minkowitz: R Raskin told usthat apparently it was the Rebbehimself who had selected the

    bachurim on the list since thehanhala had not been asked toprepare a list of bachurim to go on

    shlichus. He also pointed out thefact that there was no commondenominator among the bachurim

    who had been chosen. Some werebaalei nigleh, some baaleiChassidus. Each one was different.

    You can see, said R Raskin, thatthese are choices from Above.

    That night, R Klein called meover to a corner and asked me what

    had taken place in R Chadakovsoffice. I told him in general terms

    what we had heard and it turnedout that even he did not know whatit was about. The Rebbe personallydealt with it and even thesecretaries did not know too manydetails.

    We immediately agreed, happily,thrilled to be the Rebbes shluchim.

    We still, however, had to speak to

    our parents and we had to getmedical clearance. The nextmorning we rushed to Dr. Seligsonto get his okay. He was davening atlength in Gan Eden HaTachton,near the Rebbes room. When hefinished davening at 11:30, I wentover to him and told him about theshlichus and the condition that wehad to get medical approval.

    Dr. Seligson asked me whether Ihad ever been seriously sick. I toldhim that I had not. He then askedme to take off my glasses. Helooked into my eyes and said, Youcan travel.

    R Majeski and R Morosov(smiling): The same thinghappened with us. Since ourshlichus, this point never came up,

    but apparently we all underwent the

    same medical exam Within 15seconds we had the medicalapproval to travel.

    told R Chadakov on Shabbosmorning. Two bachurim, for

    various reasons, did not join thegroup, so we were six in all.

    When the Rebbe heard this hesaid, Nu, there should be afarbrengen. In those days there

    wasnt a farbrengen every Shabbosand this was something special.During the farbrengen, the Rebbespoke about the shlichus andcompared us to the shluchim thatthe Mitteler Rebbe sent to Eretz

    Yisroel.The Rebbe said that when the

    Mitteler Rebbe sent Chassidim, theysaid, What will be withChassidus? The Mitteler Rebbeanswered that he would send them

    his Chassidus in writing.The Rebbe asked: Chassidus is

    one thing, but what about seeingthe Rebbe? The Rebbe explainedthat just as produce cannot be eatenin the seventh year even though it

    was sown previously and not in theseventh year, the halacha is that it isas though it was planted now. Sotoo with the shluchim, althoughduring the shlichus they will missout on seeing the Rebbe, still, since

    they had already seen the Rebbe,even while on shlichus they couldpicture the Rebbe and this wouldaccomplish everything. Regardingthe shluchim to Australia, theRebbe added, there was anadvantage in that when the shlichus

    was over we could see each otheragain.

    During the sicha the Rebbeblessed us in a very special way.Among other things, the Rebbe

    said, There needs to be, hisreputation extends to all thecountries, and therefore, when thetime comes to send to a distantcorner of the world in order to

    work there and bring thewellsprings of Chassidus there, ithas to be in a way of his reputationgoes out to all the countries.

    Then the Rebbe said, The trip

    should be with exceedinglyoutstanding success, completely

    beyond the natural order. You shallsanctify Hashems name in public.May you succeed in the study ofNigleh and Chassidus and thepunctilious fulfillment of mitzvos, in

    good health, and may you bringback sparks from there, neshamos,birurim, and inyanim, etc. May thefruits blossom, etc. in a way ofufaratzta west and east and northand south.

    After the sicha, they began tosing Ufaratzta, and we went over(including the two bachurim whostill did not know whether they

    were going) and got mashke fromthe Rebbe. Afterwards, the Rebbe

    stood and danced in place as heclapped his hands with great joy.

    R Morosov: The Rebbe alsospoke about Shmita fruits in themaamer, And you shall make anincense altar, at the beginning ofthe farbrengen. The Rebbesmaamer was based on a maamer ofthe Tzemach Tzedek.

    Afterwards, the Rebbe said themammer should be prepared forprinting as a special kuntres. The

    kuntres wasnt actually printed atthat time but the Rebbe gave us thegalleys of the maamer at theyechidus before the trip.

    YECHIDUS ANDANOTHER YECHIDUS

    R Majeski:After Shabbos,when the Rebbe revealed that thesewere his shluchim, and the otheramazing things we heard at the

    farbrengen, a week and a halfpassed without our being toldanything further. It was first onTuesday, 18 Adar that we werecalled back to R Chadakovs office.This time only the six bachurim

    who were traveling were called. RChadakov told us to leave thefollowing Monday.

    R Morosov: R Chadakov saidthat we should really leave

    immediately but since we did nothave the necessary paperwork, it

    would take a few days to arrange.He told us to get a passport, a visafor Australia, and an exit permitfrom the US by Friday.
